Stemming from its unique structure and properties, Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes have stood out from the crowd of electrode materials due to effectively ameliorating imperfections of common ones for excellent energy storage. However, a major stumbling block in the further development of MXene-based supercapacitors is the inherent low capacities caused by severe restacking of nanosheets. Herein, we develop a simple, effective and innovative strategy, namely, introducing both polymerized polypyrrole (PPy) particles and ionic liquid (ILs)-based microemulsion particles as “dual spacers”, to fabricate functionalized Ti 3 C 2 -MXene composite films for high-performance and wide-temperature application in supercapacitors. The PPy particles acting as one “spacer” circumvent restacking issues of MXene nanosheets, while contribute to desirable capacitance of the hybrid material. ILs-based microemulsions spontaneously adsorbing onto PPy-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets are conceived to be one more liquid “spacer” for fast ion diffusion kinetics and absent electrolyte imbibition steps, which is rarely reported in previous research for MXene-based electrode materials. These features endow the composite films with excellent specific capacitance, rate capability and cycling stability between 4 °C and 50 °C. At room temperature, the symmetric supercapacitor device based on the composite films delivers a maximum gravimetric energy density of 31.2 Wh kg −1 (at 1030.4 W kg −1 ) and reserves 91% of the initial specific capacitance with a coulombic efficiency of 91% after 2000 cycles. All these impressive results substantiate that the composite films prepared by ingenious structure design showcase huge potentials in advanced MXene-based supercapacitors using various ionic liquid electrolytes.

The chemical conversion of the surface termination of 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) has opened up a design space that previously had not been extensively explored for this functional material . Herein, via a simple sealed thermal method, the amino terminated groups were successfully introduced on Ti 3 C 2 MXene surface. The substitution reaction of amino group to hydroxyl group was proposed to elucidate this aminated process. As the amination would reduce the carrier density on the surface of MXene, the electrical conductivity of MXene-NH 2 film decreased, while it still reached a high conductivity of 2.11 × 10 4 S m −1 . This film also possessed an excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 16160 dB cm 2 g −1 . Importantly, although the introduction of amino termination altered Zeta potential value, Zeta potential sign remained negative and the MXene-NH 2 exhibited excellent dispersity in water similar to that of traditional MXenes. Furthermore, the existence of covalent bonds endowed MXene-NH 2 polymer composite film with improved mechanical properties . Compared with that of traditional CMC/MXene film, the tensile strength and fracture energy of CMC/MXene-NH 2 increased by 65.5% and 132.7%, respectively. These results demonstrated that the introduction of amino terminated group on MXene surface would be an effective strategy to obtain higher performance MXene-based films.

MXene is a class of 2D materials exfoliated from ternary carbide and nitride ceramics. During synthesis, etching and delamination conditions affect the quality, overall crystallinity, defects and surface functionalization of MXene flakes. In this article, the morphological structure of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) nanosheets under temperature between 20 °C and 60 °C were investigated with the application of Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) combined with several complementary techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The SANS analysis enabled structural information to be obtained about the Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets, which consists of layers of transition metal carbides in a multilayer lamella morphology. The results showed that a single Ti 3 C 2 layer is approximately 11.4 – 11.8 Å (1.14 – 1.18 nm) in thickness with a 20.3 – 21.5 Å (2.03 – 2.15 nm) interstacking layer gaps. This results in a total thickness of approximately 32 Å (3.2 nm), which was consistent with the model-dependent lamella model analysis. Furthermore, the thickness of the Ti 3 C 2 layer increased by approximately ~2 Å (0.2 nm) when the temperature increased from 20 - 40 to 50 - 60 °C.

Metal halide perovskite with a suitable energy band structure and excellent visible-light response is a prospective photocatalyst for CO2 reduction. However, the reported inorganic halide perovskites have undesirable catalytic performances due to phase-sensitive and severe charge carrier recombination. Herein, we anchor the FAPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) on Ti3C2 nanosheets to form a FAPbBr3/Ti3C2 composite within a Schottky heterojunction for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Upon visible-light illumination, the FAPbBr3/Ti3C2 composite photocatalyst exhibits an appealing photocatalytic performance in the presence of deionized water. The Ti3C2 nanosheet acts as an electron acceptor to promote the rapid separation of excitons and supply specific catalytic sites. An optimal electron consumption rate of 717.18 μmol/g·h is obtained by the FAPbBr3/0.2-Ti3C2 composite, which has a 2.08-fold improvement over the pristine FAPbBr3 QDs (343.90 μmol/g·h). Meanwhile, the FAPbBr3/Ti3C2 photocatalyst also displays a superior stability during photocatalytic reaction. This work expands a new insight and platform for designing superb perovskite/MXene-based photocatalysts for CO2 reduction.

Abundant electrochemical active sites, high electronic conductivity as well as stable structure and electrochemical activity are indispensable but usually incompatible to the ideal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, an efficient and stable MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene electrocatalyst is synthesized using a delicately designed one-step hydrothermal method, in which the few-layers thick, edge-oriented, high-percentage 1T′-phase (∼ 85.0 %) MoS 2 nanosheets are well grown on the cation-modified Ti 3 C 2 MXene and stabilize Ti 3 C 2 MXene against spontaneous oxidation caused by dissolved-oxygen. The structure and phase engineering of MoS 2 as well as the fully surface-shielding Ti 3 C 2 MXene endow the as-synthesized MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene electrocatalyst with a wealth of accessible active sites and high electrical conductivity for HER together with excellent structure stability. Consequently, the as-synthesized MoS 2 -Ti 3 C 2 MXene exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic HER performance in acidic medium with a low overpotential of 98 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , a depressed Tafel slope of 45 mV dec -1 and a low electrochemical resistance.

In spite of graphene and Ti 3 C 2 MXene sheets with various significant properties and function, the performance characteristics of their hybrid in organic coating have been rarely discussed. Herein, the Ti 3 C 2 /graphene hybrid (M-G) with wrapping structure was successfully prepared and as filler was added into epoxy coating (MG-EP). Their tribological performance against Al 2 O 3 and Si 3 N 4 balls under dry sliding and 3.5 wt % NaCl solution was evaluated in detail and the anti-wear mechanism was studied via surface/interface analysis techniques. Results show that the wrapping structure of M-G hybrid can obviously decrease the wear rate of composite coating by 81–88%, with pure epoxy coating as a comparison. Moreover, the composite coating can retain good anticorrosion properties in corrosive medium during friction test, because its integrity still hinders the diffusion of corrosive media. The improving performance of composite coating mainly depends on: (a) the excellent lubrication and thermal conductivity of graphene and Ti 3 C 2 ; (b) the synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 /graphene hybrid with wrapping structure; (c) the formation of protective film on the dual surface. The Ti 3 C 2 /graphene hybrid greatly enhances the tribological and anti-corrosive properties of organic coating, which provides a new thinking for the design and application of novel high-performance additive.

Ascribing to incremental fossil fuels emissions, the utilization and conversion of CO 2 and development of renewable energy is globally essential and significative. Ultrathin 2D/2D heterojunctions with fast photo-generated electrons transmission channels illustrate a better strategy to improve photocatalytic activity. Herein, combing La 2 Ti 2 O 7 with metallic few-layered Ti 3 C 2 MXene to construct inter-plane 2D/2D heterojunction was in situ self-assembled through solvothermal method. Benefiting from the advantages including stability, conductivity, abundant active sites and formation of Schottky junctions, as expected, the ultrathin 2D/2D La 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets presented much improved photocatalytic ability for CO 2 reduction to CO and CH 4 , which is about 4.6 and 11.4 times higher than that of mechanical mixed La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene. fs-TAS and XPS provided direct evidence that the prominence of La 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Ti 3 C 2 MXene in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction over other opponents should be attributed to the synergetic effect of efficient charge carrier mobility and formed 2D/2D Schottky heterojunction interfacial contact between La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene. Intermediates revealed by in-situ DRIFTS and corresponding atomic-level DFT calculations confirmed the mechanism, pathways and selectivity for photocatalytic CO 2 conversion. This work expanded promising prospects arouses new impetus for deepening the prehension of the mechanism of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, designing and fabrication of Schottky heterojunctions for application in conversion and utilization of CO 2 .

The performance and mechanisms of a titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) MXene modified Fe 3+ /hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) system were compared in detail under dark and visible light conditions, with a new mechanism proposed for the reaction and reduction of MXene by Fe 3+ . Using Bisphenol A (BPA) as the target pollutant, the degradation of BPA by the Fe 3+ /H 2 O 2 system was improved after adding MXene in the dark, and the degradation rate of BPA was ≥ 95 % within 12.5 min under visible light, six times higher than that in the dark. Fe 2+ was ascertained to be the effective component responsible for H 2 O 2 activation to produce ·OH. SEM , XPS, ICP, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy , analyses show that MXene and Fe 3+ form a complex, and then MXene reacts with Fe 3+ by breaking the Ti–C bonding to accelerate the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. MXene uses photogenerated electrons to promote this reaction under visible light. In addition, quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy results show that ·OH and O 2 •− are the main reactive oxygen species under visible light, while ·OH is the main active species in the dark. MXene thus effectively uses O 2 to form O 2 •− under visible light and promotes the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. This study provides a theoretical basis for the combination of visible light catalysis and the advanced oxidation process of a Ti 3 C 2 MXene.

In this study, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction catalysts were prepared using the solvothermal method, and their photocatalytic ability to degrade and mineralize tetracycline (TC) under illumination was investigated. After 90 min of photocatalysis, the pollutant had a degradation efficiency of 96.2% and a mineralization rate of 45.5%. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were analyzed using various methods. The effects of the solution pH, coexisting anions, and water quality on the catalyst performance were investigated. ·O 2 − and h + are the main active substances in the photocatalytic mechanism, as demonstrated by free-radical quenching experiments and EPR tests. The degradation of TC and the intermediates produced were determined using 3D fluorescence and LC-MS. The photocatalytic mechanism of Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 was proposed based on free radical determination and electrochemical tests. The formation of the Schottky junction accelerated the transfer of electrons to Ti 3 C 2 and improved the separation of charges, which led to the generation of free radicals. Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 still exhibited good catalytic ability after four cycles of the experiments, and the XRD patterns before and after the reaction were consistent, which illustrates that the composite structure was stable. Overall, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 has promising applications in the photocatalytic removal of refractory pollutants.

Acyclovir (Acyclovir, ACV) is an antiviral drug which, despite its favorable safety profile, can have systemic adverse effects, following improper use. This study prepared a clay-like two-dimensional transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 by etching Ti 3 AlC 2 with LiF and HCl. Carboxylated multi walled carbon nanotubes (Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes , MWCNTs-COOH) were combined with Ti 3 C 2 using chitosan (Chitosan, CS) as solvent and ultrasonic treatment . The nanocomposite was then modified onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (Glassy carbon electrode, GCE) to develop an electrochemical sensor for the detection of ACV. The Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH/GCE nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (X-ray diffractometry, XRD), scanning electron microscope (Scanning electron microscope,SEM), and cyclic voltammetry (Cyclic voltammetry,CV), as well as the electrochemical impedance method (Electrochemical impedance,EIS). The successful preparation of Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH, and the good electrochemical performance of the electrode were verified. Linear scanning voltammetry (Linear scan voltammetry,LSV) was used to quantify the ACV. The linear range of the method is wider than other works (0.05 ∼ 20.0 and 20.0 ∼ 500.0 μM), with a low detection limit (0.088 μM). The sensor achieves sensitive detection of ACV and can be used for the analysis of ACV in pharmaceutical and urine dosage forms , with recoveries of 95.5∼97.6% and 95.6∼97.5%, respectively. For the first time, this sensor utilizes clay-like Ti 3 C 2 with a larger specific surface area in combination with MWCNTs-COOH for ACV detection, which exhibits excellent immunity to interference, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. This method provides a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of ACV, and lays foundations for developing miniaturized field rapid test detectors.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been known pollutants, which are ubiquitous in various matrix, even in some food products and beverages like fruit juices. It is of great importance to develop efficient and simple method to detect them in such matrix. In this work, an effective magnetic composite integrating the advantages of the magnism of CoFe 2 O 4 , hydrophilicity and multisites of Ti 3 C 2 and high adsorption properties of polyaniline (CoFe 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 @PANI) was designed and synthesized. CoFe 2 O 4 @Ti 3 C 2 @PANI-based magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was established for determination of nine PCBs in fruit juices. The developed method achieved low detection limits of 0.4–0.8 ng L −1 . The established method was validated with three beverages and achieved good spiked recoveries ranging from 77.2 % to 104.7 %. These findings exhibited that the established method was very simple, efficient, and credible for the analysis of PCBs in food, environmental, and other fields.

Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) have recently gained considerable attention as promising emerging nanomaterials for biosensing applications. However, it is still in the infancy of research on the functionalisation of MQDs to improve their properties. This work synthesised glutathione (GSH)-modified MQDs by hydrothermal method and functionalised them with porphyrin (TMPyP 4 ), resulting in porphyrin-functionalised GSH-Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs-TMPyP 4 ) nanocomposite with enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) properties. The lack of selectivity of MQDs and the weak luminescence intensity of ECL have been solved, expanding the method for developing materials with enhanced ECL properties. Cu 2+ was found to quench the ECL luminescence of MQDs-TMPyP 4 , which is valuable for detecting copper ions. Consequently, we constructed a sensitive “Signal on–off” biosensor for Cu 2+ detection. The biosensor demonstrated a sensitive response to copper ions within the concentration range of 10 nM to 10 μM, with an impressively low detection limit of 3.22 nM. Additionally, the biosensor exhibited good stability and selectivity. The ECL biosensor performed well and provided an efficient and ultra-sensitive method for detecting Cu 2+ .
