Shear stress-induced delamination method for the mass production of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets

Zehang Zhou,Lingfei Wei,Ya Yi,Shiyi Feng,Zeying Zhan,Dong Tian,Canhui Lu

MXene nanosheets are considered advantageous for functional materials, but current delamination methods to prepare MXene nanosheets have many limitations including high cost, small production scale, low efficiency, and deteriorated structure integrity of obtained nanosheets. Here, we propose a simple, efficient, and scalable shear stress-induced delamination (SSID) strategy to boost the production of single-/few-layered Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that the pan mill-type grinding discs create a strong hydrodynamic flow field, which exerts gigantic shear stress to substantially delaminate the multilayered MXene stacks into homogeneously dispersed MXene nanosheets. Furthermore, shear stress generated from vigorous water flow has limited fragmentation effect, ensuring large lateral size and good structure integrity to the obtained MXene nanosheets as evidenced by the morphological and structural characterizations. Compared to conventional delamination methods, this novel SSID strategy exhibits great advantages in terms of efficiency, scalability and the properties of resultant MXene nanosheets, which opens up great opportunity for the scalable production and commercialization of high-performance MXene-based materials.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Emerging Contaminants Using Ti3C2Tx MXene-Supported CdS Quantum Dots

Zhao Yang,Jianlong Wang

The synthesis of efficient and stable catalysts for photocatalytic reactions is still a challenge. In this study, a new photocatalyst composed of two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) and CdS quantum dots (QDs) was fabricated, in which CdS QDs were intimately anchored on the Ti3C2Tx sheet surface. Due to the specific interface characteristics of CdS QDs/Ti3C2Tx, Ti3C2Tx can considerably facilitate the generation of photogenerated charge carriers, their separation, and their transfer from CdS. As expected, the obtained CdS QDs/Ti3C2Tx exhibit outstanding photocatalytic performance for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. Moreover, the quenching experiments demonstrated that superoxide radicals (•O2–), H2O2, 1O2, and •OH are the reactive species involved in CBZ degradation, while •O2– made a major contribution. In addition, the sunlight-driven CdS QDs/Ti3C2Tx photocatalytic system is widely suitable for the elimination of different emerging pollutants in various water matrices, suggesting its potential practical environmental applications.

Kaicheng Zhang,Guobing Ying,Lu Liu,Fengchen Ma,Lin Su,Chen Zhang,Donghai Wu,Xiang Wang,Ying Zhou

Ti3C2Txand Ti3C2Tx-NiO composites with three-dimensional (3D) porous networks were successfully fabricated via vacuum freeze-drying. The microstructure, absorption, and electrochemical properties of the developed composites were investigated. Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles could be evenly distributed on the three-dimensional network of three-dimensional Ti3C2Txusing solution processing. When employed as electrochemical capacitor electrodes in 1 M environmentally friendly sodium sulfate, Na2SO4, solution, the three-dimensional porous Ti3C2Tx-NiO composite electrodes exhibited considerable volume specific capacitance as compared to three-dimensional porous Ti3C2Tx. The three-dimensional porous Ti3C2Tx-NiO composite delivered a remarkable cycling performance with a capacitance retention of up to 114% over 2500 cycles. The growth trend of the capacitance with NiO content shows that nickel oxide plays a crucial role in the composite electrodes. These results present a roadmap for the development of convenient and economical supercapacitors in consideration with the possibilities of morphological control and the extensibility of the process. Keywords:MXene;porous Ti3C2Tx-NiO composite;freeze-drying;electrode;supercapacitor

Facile preparation of in situ coated Ti3C2Tx/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composites and their electromagnetic performance

Youbing Li,Xiaobing Zhou,Jing Wang,Qihuang Deng,Mian Li,Shiyu Du,Young-Hwan Han,Jaehyung Lee,Qing Huang

A novel family of Ti3C2Tx/ferrite composites with high reflection loss was developed using a facile in situ co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Ti3C2Tx/ferrite composite with a 5 wt% Ti3C2Tx MXenes loading exhibited high reflection loss (−42.5 dB) at 13.5 GHz. The effective absorption bandwidth of the 5 wt% Ti3C2Tx/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite reached ∼3 GHz (12–15 GHz) in the K-band. The incorporation of Ti3C2Tx MXenes improved the electromagnetic impedance of the Ti3C2Tx/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 composite resulting from the enhanced electrical conductivity. The potential electromagnetic wave absorption mechanisms were revealed, which may contain magnetic loss, dielectric loss, conductivity loss, multiple reflections, and scattering. The technique is facile, fast, scalable, and favorable for the commercialization of this composite. This study provides a potential way to develop EM wave absorbing materials for a large family of MXenes/ferrite composites.

Efficient uranium(VI) separation based on a layered 2D Ti3C2Tx/hydroxyapatite hybrid membrane

Yong Zhang,Xuan Liu,Yujia Liu,Jiaqi Feng,Kexing Jiang

Lamellar membranes made from 2D materials have garnered significant attention as advanced separation materials for wastewater treatment, particularly for wastewater containing uranium (U(VI)). Nevertheless, it is still a great challenge to obtain assembled lamellar membranes with both high flux and retention rate from 2D materials. In this work, a method of in-situ loading hydroxyapatite nanoparticles onto MXene nanosheets and vacuum filtration to form a novel Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/hydroxyapatite (MXene/HAP, MXHP) membrane had been developed for separating U(VI) from wastewater. From the characterization results, the MXHP membrane displayed an increasing trend of interfacial pores and interlayer channels for comparison to the pure MXene membrane, which could notably improve water permeability of MXHP membrane. Based on membrane separation experiments, the MXHP-2 membrane achieved a flux of 515.5 L/(m 2 ·h·bar) and a U(VI) retention rate of 98.2 % in the treatment of U(VI)-containing wastewater. Additionally, the MXHP-2 membrane exhibited strong recyclability with a high U(VI) retention rate of 85.3 % after five cycles. The U(VI) separation mechanism of MXHP-2 was photocatalytic reduction assisted dissolution-deposition. The above results could provide valuable insights for developing new composite membranes with high throughput and high uranium retention rate.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by magnetic Fe3O4/ZIF-67/Ti3C2Tx composites for tetracycline degradation

Yuxia Xie,Xiaofeng Yang,Jin Chen,Yuzhao Ma,Yanjun Li

The inverse spinel-structured Fenton-like catalyst, magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, effectively activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to achieve the degradation of tetracycline (TC). However, a significant challenge remains in accelerating the Fe 3 + /Fe 2+ cycling during the activation process. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /ZIF-67/Ti 3 C 2 T x (FCT) magnetic composite materials were synthesized via a wet chemical method and comprehensively characterized. The degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was investigated by activating PMS with FCT, with a focus on the effects of charge transfer and transition metal ion valence state changes on sulfate radical (•SO 4 - )-based advanced oxidation processes. FCT-1 exhibited high efficiency in activating the PMS system for the removal of TC-HCl, achieving complete degradation of 10 mg/L TC-HCl within 10 minutes. A synergistic catalytic mechanism to activate PMS by FCT was proposed, primarily involving the electron-donating ability of Fe 2+ in Fe 3 O 4 , which enhances the Co 3+ /Co 2+ cycle, and the reduction capability of Ti 3 C 2 T x towards Fe 3+ . Additionally, FCT exhibited excellent recyclability and facilitated magnetic separation. Overall, this work provides new opportunities for developing efficient environmental catalysts with magnetic recoverability.

Fe(OH)3/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites for enhanced ammonia gas sensor at room temperature

Zhihua Zhao,Hepeng Zhang,Pu Chen,Guixin Jin,Lan Wu

Two-dimensional material (2D material) MXene has great application potential in gas sensors because of its excellent controllable performance and vast specific surface area. In this study, we used a straightforward in-situ electrostatic self-assembly technique to create Fe(OH)3/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites, which were then used to fabricate gas sensors for ammonia detection at room temperature (25 °C). Several characterization methods were performed aimed at determining the surface appearance and construction of the nanocomposites, and the sensing characteristics and mechanism were also systematically examined. The findings demonstrate the effective incorporation of amorphous Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles on the surface of Ti3C2Tx. Additionally the nanocomposites of Fe(OH)3/Ti3C2Tx have considerably higher specific surface area than pure Ti3C2Tx, hence offering more active NH3 adsorption sites. The response of the sensor to 100 ppm NH3 was 48.6% at room temperature, which was 9.3 times more higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx. The sensors also have the advantages of long-term stability (33 d), low NH3 detection limit (500 ppb), and rapid recovery time (85 s) and response times (78 s). It is anticipated that this work will be helpful for developing the new generation of wearable ammonia sensors at room temperature.

Xiaodong Zhang,Kang Xiang,Muyang Ye,Shuang Gao,Xiujuan Wang

Ultraviolet photodetectors (UV-PDs) with high sensitivity and fast optical response have become an important part of modern optoelectronic information transmission and communication systems. In this paper, a high-performance self-powered titanium carbide (${{\rm Ti}_{3}}{\rm C_2}{\rm T_x}$)/gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky UV-PD with an interdigitated electrode was developed. A Schottky-contacted ${{\rm Ti}_{3}}{\rm C_2}{\rm T_x}$ interdigitated electrode was successfully fabricated on GaN substrates using a spray coating method. The as-prepared ${{\rm Ti}_{3}}{\rm C_2}{\rm T_x}/{\rm GaN}$ UV-PD exhibits excellent optoelectronic properties. Under zero bias and weak UV illumination (${48}\;\unicode{x00B5} {{\rm W/cm}^{2}}$), the device demonstrates an ultra-low dark current (${2.818} \times {{10}^{- {10}}}\;{\rm A}$) and a fast response speed (${{\rm t}_{\rm r}} = {170}\;\unicode{x00B5} {{\rm s/t}_{\rm f}} = {210}\;\unicode{x00B5} {\rm s}$); the responsivity and detectivity could reach 120.78 mA/W and ${1.272} \times {{10}^{{12}}}$ Jones, respectively. Furthermore, to demonstrate the feasibility of practical application, the device was applied in a UV point-of-view imaging system and high-quality images were successfully obtained under low-light conditions. This work presents an effective approach in developing high-performance UV-PDs for optical imaging applications.

Flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor based on Ti3C2Tx MXene/graphene/carbon nanotubes

Yanling Jin,Jiahui Geng,Yilan Wang,Zirui Zhao,Zhengyan Chen,Zhengzheng Guo,Lu Pei,Fang Ren,Zhenfeng Sun,Peng-Gang Ren

As the emerging 2D materials, MXenes have been regarded as promising electrode materials in supercapacitor as power supply for wearable and portable electronic devices due to their metallic conductivity, hydrophilic feature, abundant functional groups, and large theoretical specific surface area etc. The capacity and rate capability of MXene-based electrodes is limited by the sheet restacking, hindering their further development. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/graphene/carbon nanotubes (MXene/graphene/CNTs) flexible film was successfully fabricated by vacuum assisted filtration. Intercalation and confinement of graphene and carbon nanotubes between the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets could increase the spacing and specific surface area, alleviate the stacking of MXene nanosheets, thus enhancing the electrochemical properties. The prepared MXene/graphene/CNTs film possesses increased specific surface area, average pore size, pore volume (112.259 m 2 g −1 , 9.982 nm, 0.276 cm 3 g −1 ), compared to MXene (93.088 m 2 g −1 , 3.786 nm, 0.088 cm 3 g −1 ). Consequently, MXene/graphene/CNTs delivers high area specific capacitance of 1862.5 mF cm −2 at 1 mA cm −2 and excellent rate capability (1525 mF cm −2 , 81.88 % at 20 mA cm −2 ). Flexible asymmetric supercapacitor constructed with MXene/graphene/CNTs film and active carbon as positive and negative electrodes, and PVA/H 2 SO 4 gel as solid electrolyte, achieves an energy density of 133.75 μWh cm −2 at the power density of 750 μW cm −2 . In addition, there is still 94.9 % of the initial performance after cycling 8000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 mA cm −2 , corresponding to a single-turn decay rate down to 0.00019 %. Besides, this flexible supercapacitor manifests outstanding electrochemical stability at different bending times. These advantages make the flexible supercapacitor device very promising for wearable electronics applications.

Zhihua Zhao,Shixin Ma,Abu Bakker Md Rahmatullah,Zhuo Chen,Yafang Pan,Lan Wu,Bo Huang

The generation of high levels of ammonia in industries, agricultural sectors, and water treatment plants has triggered the necessity to detect high ammonia concentrations in a flexible way to ensure proactive measures for protecting humans and the environment. Therefore, it is essential to develop highly sensitive multifunctional sensors that have long-term stability, high durability, and a large stretch range. In our work, a novel approach was developed for fabricating flexible sensors consisting of polyurethane (PU) yarn and the loaded Ti 3 C 2 T x /CeO 2 /TiO 2 (abbreviated as MTCe) nanocomposites. The structures and morphology of the yarn-shaped sensors were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other characterisation methods. In addition, gas and strain responses were recorded and analysed using an AES-4SD flexible electronic device. The response of the yarn-shaped sensors to 100 ppm NH 3 was 42.9 % at room temperature (25 °C), indicating its excellent gas sensitivity. In addition, the sensors exhibited some key advantages, such as a large stretch range (60 %), high sensitivity (up to 385.285), and good durability (200 stretches/releases at 20 % stretch), which may be considered a remarkable achievement in the field of flexible sensor manufacturing for multiple applications.

Engineered core-shell SiO2@Ti3C2Tx composites: Towards ultra-thin electromagnetic wave absorption materials

Huanhuan Niu,Xueyang Tu,Shuang Zhang,Yaya Li,Hailong Wang,Gang Shao,Rui Zhang,Hongxia Li,Biao Zhao,Bingbing Fan

Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets are attractive for electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) materials requiring ultra-thin and high-performance due to their high conductivity and polarizability. However, the self-restacking of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets unavoidably decreases the number of active sites, specific surface area, and conductivity. Herein, a simple strategy is developed to prepare a core–shell structure of SiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x by electrostatic assembly and hydrogen bonding. SiO 2 spheres as templates cannot only prevent Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets from further stacking, but also modulate the surface impedance and significantly increase interfacial polarization loss. The resulted SiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x composite can deliver superior absorption capacity with minimum reflection coefficient (RL) of −58.01 dB at an ultra-thin thickness of only 1.3 mm. The absorption efficiency is calculated over 99.999 % with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.44 GHz. Furthermore, with increasing amounts of SiO 2 templates, the EAB can be broadened up to 15.04 GHz (2.96–18 GHz) in the thickness range of 1–3 mm. The absorption mechanisms are described based on multiple reflection, polarization behaviors, tunable impedance matching, and conduction loss. The present work could pave a way for obtaining ultra-thin, high-performance MXene-based EMA materials.
