A high adsorption capacity and excellent recyclability are the most critical factors for large-scale application of adsorbents. In this work, a regenerable Zn-UiO-66 was synthesized by doping Zn into UiO-66. The resulting adsorbent exhibited a high adsorption performance for TCH with a qmax of 178.9 mg g−1 at 30 °C and maintained stable adsorption performance across a broad pH range (3–11). The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics of TCH, together with the zeta potential of the adsorbent under different pH conditions, further confirm the underlying adsorption mechanism, which is proceeded via monolayer chemisorption, primarily governed by π–π conjugation, π–cation interactions, coordination interactions and hydrogen bonding. The adsorbent also performed well in real water matrices. Importantly, Zn-UiO-66 exhibits good water stability and excellent recyclability, with only a slight decrease in adsorption capacity after five cycles using simple water rinsing, underscoring its strong potential for efficient antibiotic removal.

A mixed-matrix membrane was developed by combining defect-engineered UiO-66-NH 2 metal-organic framework (MOF) and nanocellulose. A formic acid-modulated solvothermal method creates linker-missing defects in UiO-66-NH 2 , increasing its specific surface area from 540 to 775 m 2 g −1 . The hydroxyl/carboxyl-rich cellulose forms a robust hydrogen-bonding network with amino groups and defect sites on the MOF, suppressing interfacial defects. The optimized membrane achieves a CO 2 permeability of 303.7 Barrer with CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities of 92.3 and 124.0, respectively. This enhancement arises from optimized adsorption sites in the defective MOF and superb MOF-cellulose interface capability coupled with efficient CO 2 transfer through the cellulose network. Moreover, the membrane exhibits good stability over 500 h tests, offering a promising approach to high-performance gas separation.

As a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, levofloxacin (LEV) residue in biological and environmental samples has aroused widespread public concern. In this work, NH 2 -UiO-66 was in-situ synthesized via a solvothermal route on MoO 3 surface. Subsequent covalent modification with ferrocene (Fc) afforded a ratiometric electrochemical sensor denoted as Fc-NH 2 -UiO-66/MoO 3 /GCE for LEV quantification. The anchored Fc units not only construct an internal self-calibration system with stable reference signal to greatly improve detection reliability, but also boost the electrical conductivity of the composite electrode. The as-fabricated sensor exhibits favorable analytical performance toward LEV, featuring a wide linear range of 0.6 µM-600 µM and a low limit of detection of 0.032 µM, together with stable anti-interference capability. Moreover, the developed electrode was successfully employed to determine LEV in practical specimens including serum, urine and commercial LEV eye drops. This reliable and sensitive analytical strategy exhibits promising prospects for clinical diagnosis and pharmaceutical analysis. Graphical abstract

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a focal point of interest owing to their ability to remove contaminants from wastewater. However, the typical powder form of MOFs is difficult to recover after use, which hinders their practical application. In this research, UiO-66-OH gel was synthesized at room temperature. On this basis, Co was doped into UiO-66-OH gel to obtain a series of Co@U-OH-X composites. The [email protected] exhibited an adsorption capacity for TC that was 5.1 times higher compared to the UiO-66-OH gel. Furthermore, the influence of pH, coexisting ions, humic acid, and original concentration of TC on the adsorption of [email protected] was examined. The composite materials demonstrated an exceptional capacity to adsorb TC (182.31 mg·g -1 ), which surpassed the performance of numerous previously documented adsorbents. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model efficiently accounted for the adsorptive interaction. Thermodynamic adsorption analyses indicated that the interaction occurred spontaneously and accompanied by heat absorption. After four cycles, there was only a 12.7% reduction in the removal rate of TC, which suggested that the composite materials were recyclable. [email protected] showed remarkable adsorption capacity even in settings with minimal TC concentration. The exceptional adsorptive performance, superior recyclability and aqueous stability established Co@U-OH-X composites as a viable adsorbent contender for eliminating TC.

Biomimetic mineralization is a crucial biotechnology for encapsulating enzymes within metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). While this technique is extensively employed in solvent-based systems, its applicability in mechanochemical systems remains to be explored. In addition, the structural units of MOF composition may significantly influence this process. In this study, we reported that dodecanuclear zirconium clusters act as precursors to facilitate the mechanochemical process of biomimetic mineralization, leading to the construction of cellulase@UiO-66-NH2 (with cellulase abbreviated as Cel). The results demonstrate that dodecanuclear zirconium clusters promote the biomimetic mineralization of Cel@UiO-66-NH2, preventing enzyme degradation by organic solvents. This approach leads to a 20% increase in enzyme activity per unit mass and a 78% improvement in the encapsulation rate. It also enhances catalytic efficiency and substrate affinity compared with Cel@UiO-66-NH2 synthesized with hexanuclear zirconium clusters. The biomimetic mineralization was attributed to the increased local concentration of structural units of MOFs surrounding Cel, as well as transformations in chemical bonding and alterations in enzyme structure. We demonstrated the stability of Cel@UiO-66-NH2 compared to traditional physical adsorption methods and explored its applications in the saccharification of carboxymethylcellulose and microcrystalline cellulose and the high-temperature sequential extraction of polysaccharides from Naematelia aurantialba. Our results revealed that Cel@UiO-66-NH2 retained over 50% of its catalytic activity after eight cycles of carboxymethylcellulose saccharification and maintained 50.9% enzyme activity after five cycles of treatment with microcrystalline cellulose. In addition, we achieved a polysaccharide extraction yield of 10.35% at 70 °C.

Water has an important effect on proton conductance process in proton exchange membranes (PEMs). To enlarge the pore size and construct a more efficient water channel, UiO-66 with controllable structural defects were innovatively proposed to blend with SPEEK. Linker defects expose acidic sites, thereby adjusting the hydrophilicity and facilitating the formation of an effective hydrogen bonding network. As a result, S/deU-2 exhibited the highest conductivity under experimental conditions, which was 54.5% higher than that of SPEEK and 31.3% of non-defective UiO-66 filled PEMs. NMR T 2 spectra reviewed that free water, which had the greatest impact on conductivity, accounted for the largest proportion in S/deU-2. In consideration of potential structural weakening due to defect introduction, defect-repair and bioinspired structure optimization strategies were further proposed to balance conductivity and long-term stability.

Compact and phase-pure UiO-66-NH 2 membranes were synthesized on the 3-aminopropy-ltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified macroporous Al 2 O 3 tubes through a repeated synthesis strategy. APTES acts as a molecular linker for anchoring the metal ions onto the support surface to promote the nucleation and the crystallization of UiO-66-NH 2 membrane. Therefore, well-intergrown UiO-66-NH 2 membranes could be prepared through a repeated synthesis method on the APTES-modified macroporous Al 2 O 3 tubes. The developed UiO-66-NH 2 membranes were evaluated for seawater desalination by pervaporation . It is found that the UiO-66-NH 2 membranes show high desalination performances attributing to the narrow pore size which is exactly in between the size of water molecules and hydrated ions . With increasing the feed temperature from 318 to 363 K, the water fluxes increase from 1.5 to 12.1 kg m −2 h −1 , with ions rejections of above 99.7%. Further, the UiO-66-NH 2 membranes display high stability for a long time in seawater desalination, which is very promising for seawater desalination.

Oil-containing emulsion pollution seriously endangers the ecological environment and human health, and it is urgent to solve the problem of oil-containing emulsion pollution. In membrane separation technology, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are being widely used to enhance the wettability of the membrane surface and separation efficiency. Here, electrospinning technics and the outstanding wetting properties of MOF are combined to improve the separation performance of oil-containing emulsions. PVP chains were successfully grafted on Zr-O clusters of UiO-66-NH 2 to prepare PVP-UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles, which were then loaded on the PAN nanofiber substrate with microspheres/fine fibers prepared by a continuous electrospinning-electrospray process. The result shows that the PAN nanofiber substrate loaded with 0.5 wt% PVP-UiO-66-NH 2 has the best separation efficiency and stable anti-fouling ability for different kinds of oil-in-water surfactant stabilized emulsions (TOC = 11.6 mg/L, R = 99.2% FRR = 94.4% for n-hexane-water emulsion). Therefore, the constructed nanofiber membrane is the favorable candidate for the efficient separation of oil-containing emulsions.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as a pivotal role in catalysis. Through control of MOFs synthesis conditions (e.g., time, temperature, ligand content, and agent type), offering the potential for improving catalytic performance and broadening application prospects of porous MOF-based composites. Based on this rationale, a series of HPW@UiO-67 catalysts with different organic ligand concentrations was fabricated via a simple one-pot hydrothermal method and evaluated for esterification activity. Characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, N 2 physisorption, SEM, EDX, TG, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, and XPS were systematically analyzed to determine the physicochemical properties of the synthesized composite catalysts. These analyses confirmed that the concentration of H 2 bpdc ligands significantly influenced the porous characteristics, surface morphology, and catalytic performance of the composites. Among the catalysts tested, the HPW@UiO-67–1 catalyst with the addition of 2 molar quality of H 2 bpdc exhibited superior activity in the production of biodiesel from oleic acid (OA) esterification than that of other synthesized catalysts, achieving a 93.9% conversion, which was primarily attributed to their mesopore surface area (465.8 m 2 /g), available multi-scale pore morphology structure, high acidity capacity (0.95 mmol/g), and abundant Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites. The optimal catalyst of HPW@UiO-67–1 exhibited good stability, and the cyclic experiments showed that the composite catalyst retained over 80% of its activity after four consecutive times. This work validated the synthesis strategic design of porous MOF-based hybrid materials for sustainable and efficient biofuels production. Graphical

A sensitive voltammetric platform for determination of pefloxacin. • UiO-67/MWCNT-COOH exhibited significant synergistic effect toward pefloxacin. • Wide linear range (0.01–10 μM), low LOD (5.0 nM) and good stability (30 days). • High sensitivity in the detection of pefloxacin in lake water and honey. Developing a simple and efficient detection method for pefloxacin (PEF) is crucial for environmental monitoring and food safety assurance. In this study, we designed a novel electrochemical sensor for PEF detection by integrating zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (UiO-67 MOFs) with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) through a two-step hydrothermal and ultrasonic-assisted strategy. The coordination of the carboxyl groups of MWCNT-COOH with the unsaturated metal sites on the zirconium clusters of UiO-67, and the strong electrostatic attraction between PEF and the negatively charged composite surface, as well as strong π-π stacking interactions between the aromatic ring of PEF and the benzene rings of the organic ligands in UiO-67 and the graphite surface of MWCNT-COOH, collectively contribute to the efficient accumulation and sensitive detection of PEF. The sensor demonstrated a wide linear range (0.01–10 μM), an ultralow detection limit (0.005 μM), and outstanding overall sensing performance. When applied to real-world samples, including lake water and honey, the method achieved satisfactory recovery (94.48% − 108.9% and 100.9% to 106.4%, respectively), confirming its practical applicability for monitoring PEF in environmental and food matrices. A sensitive electrochemical sensing platform was developed for the detection of trace pefloxacin residues in lake water and honey by integrating zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (UiO-67 MOFs) with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH). A [H]-accelerated catalytic Fenton system was developed using Pd/UiO-66(Zr)-F4 as the catalyst. This system enabled the regeneration of Fe²⁺ and facilitated the continuous generation of both ·OH and 1O2 through [H]-mediated electron transfer at ambient temperature and pressure. Under the conditions of 0.2 g L−1 catalyst (Pd loading 0.516 wt%), 25 μM Fe2+, 60 mL min−1 H2 flow (as the [H] source), 20 mM H2O2, and pH 3, approximately 89% of carbamazepine (initial concentration 20 mg L−1) was degraded within 3 h using trace iron. However, the catalytic activity of Pd/UiO-66(Zr)-F4 gradually declined from 89% to 53% over six reaction cycles. This decrease was likely due to loss of specific surface area caused by microstructural degradation associated with hydrogen spillover effects.

A UiO-66/porous carbon heterojunction was constructed to achieve synergistic photothermal catalysis for dye degradation. • The mechanism of photothermally enhanced interfacial electron transfer was elucidated by combining in-situ characterization and simulations. • The composite exhibited high removal efficiencies for MO and RhB (93% and 88%, respectively) along with excellent cycling stability. • The non-phytotoxic degradation products confirm the ecological safety and practical application potential of this system. A UiO‑66/porous carbon composite was developed as a photothermal catalytic system for the efficient degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous environments. UiO‑66 offers a high specific surface area and abundant active sites, while porous carbon provides broad‑spectrum light absorption and efficient photothermal conversion. Irradiated with simulated sunlight, the composite removed 93% of MO and 88% of RhB, with apparent rate constants markedly exceeding those of the individual components. The mechanism of hot electron transfer at the interface between UiO-66 and porous carbon driven by photothermal effects has been revealed through in-situ XPS analysis and FDTD electromagnetic field simulations. Porous carbon, as the dominant photothermal component, generates localized heating to enhance reaction kinetics and facilitates charge separation and migration in UiO-66 through interfacial hot-electron transfer, thereby synergistically promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species (·OH and ·O 2 ⁻). Additionally, hydroponic experiments with mung beans confirmed the non‑phytotoxicity of the degradation products, underscoring the ecological safety of the system. This work provides design and mechanistic insights for the development of efficient, stable, and environmentally sustainable solar‑driven materials for wastewater remediation.
