Electrochromic photonic crystals (PCs) have been intensively studied in the field of display, sensors, and intelligent materials due to their tunable brilliant structural colors. The mostly studied electrochromic PCs are based on the tunable lattice parameter after electrifying; namely, the electrochromic process is caused by the structural change of PCs. Besides the lattice parameter, the refractive index is another key factor to determine the structural color of PCs. Here, a kind of hollow-SiO2-supported WO3 (H-SiO2/WO3) PCs is designed, where the refractive index of the WO3 portion is changeable under charging. Benefiting from the support effect and tunable thickness of H-SiO2, large-area PC samples with good surface morphology and bright multicolor output are prepared. The reflection peaks of these composite PCs can shift by 30–90 nm, and their corresponding colors changed obviously after the voltage was applied. After being pixelated by laser-marking, the H-SiO2/WO3 PCs can dynamically display different numeric and alphabetic patterns in an electric-driven writing and erasing process. Not only does this composite PC structure broaden the color change range of WO3-based materials but also avoids the structural change in the electrochromic process. This work provides more possibilities for electrochromic PCs in the field of color-changing pattern displays.

The development of a rapid, highly sensitive, and dependable acetone sensor holds significant importance for human health and safety. To enhance the acetone sensing performance of LaFeO3nanoparticles for practical applications, commercial n-type WO3nanoparticles were incorporated as additives. They were directly mixed with LaFeO3nanoparticles produced through a sol-gel method, creating a series of WO3-LFO nanocomposites with varying mass ratios. These nanocomposites were characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, and XPS techniques. Compared to pure LFO nanoparticles, the prepared nanocomposites exhibited larger specific surface areas with enhanced surface reactivity. The introduction of p-n heterojunctions through the mixing process improved the regulation of acetone molecules on internal carrier conduction within nanocomposites. As a result, the nanocomposites demonstrated superior acetone sensing performance in terms of optimal operating temperature, vapor response value, selectivity, and response/recovery speed. Notably, the nanocomposites with a 5wt% addition of WO3showed the lowest optimal operating temperature (132 °C), the fastest response/recovery speed (28/9 s), and the highest selectivity against ethanol, methanol, and EG. On the other hand, the nanocomposites with a 10wt% addition of WO3displayed the maximum vapor response value (55.1 to 100 ppm) at an optimal operating temperature of 138 °C, along with relatively good repeatability, stability, and selectivity.Keywords:LaFeO3;WO3;nanocomposites;acetone;XPS

Abstract Cyclohexanone is a crucial intermediate for producing nylon and other industrial products. However, the direct hydrogenation of phenol for synthesizing cyclohexanone easily generates cyclohexanol and thus reduce the yield. In this work, the Pd/WO 3 catalysts with different Pd contents (Pd/WO 3 -1–0.21 wt%, Pd/WO 3 -2–0.69 wt%, Pd/WO 3 -3–2.20 wt%) are prepared via using sodium borohydride liquid phase reduction, which have good catalytic performance for phenol selective hydrogenation. The Pd/WO 3 -2 catalyst can achieve 92.9% conversion, 84.4% selectivity and high TOF (turnover frequency) of 349.1 h −1 under the reaction conditions (120 °C, 2 h, 3.0 MPa H 2 ). The nanostructures of the catalysts are extensively characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, STEM and STEM-EDS elemental mapping and line-scanning. It is found that the Pd/WO 3 -2 catalyst has a high Pd dispersion and quite tiny Pd clusters. Alternatively, the stability experiment of Pd/WO 3 -2 indicates that the conversion decreases from 92.9% to 87.5% and the selectivity to cyclohexanone does not change significantly (84%) after it is recycled for five times. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) of inorganic materials doped with activators and sensitizers has great application, but its luminescence intensity always impose restrictions on its development. Herein, an obvious enhancement in luminescence intensity of the WO 3 : Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ phosphor was realized through non-equivalence substitution of Bi 3+ ions. The single pure phase of the synthesized WO 3 : Yb 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Bi 3+ phosphors has been confirmed by the XRD pattern. The morphology of phosphors and valence state of elements have been performed by SEM and XPS techniques. The sample on excitation with 980 nm performs forceful green emission and weak red emission at 543 nm and 662 nm, separately. The concentrations for doped Yb 3+ and Ho 3+ to obtain the optimal UCL in WO 3 are 8% and 1%, respectively. The optimized doping concentration for Bi 3+ ions is 3%. Compared to samples without Bi 3+ ions, the Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ /Bi 3+ doped WO 3 obtains 1.59 and 2.33 times increase in emission intensity of green and red, respectively. We also explored the UCL mechanism and enhancement mechanism on the basis of the power dependency, the UCL and the downshift luminescence. These results based on Yb 3+ /Ho 3+ UCL phosphors research is of great significance.

Surface-supported isolated atoms in single-atom catalysts (SACs) grant maximum utilization of metals in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report a feasible pyrolysis strategy to synthesize Pd single atoms by thermally melting Pd nanoparticles on an oxygen-vacancy-rich tungsten-oxide matrix at reduction atmosphere. Near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to monitor the formation of zero-valence Pd single atoms and the increased metallic feature of WO 3− x substrate. Accordingly, the as-obtained zero-valence Pd single-atom catalyst exhibits a markedly boosted HER activity with a low overpotential ( η 10 = 70 mV) at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and a small Tafel slope ( b = 68 mV/dec), nearly 150 mV and a 3.0-fold enhancement than those of Pd nanoparticles ( η 10 = 220 mV, b = 133 mV/dec) under the same conditions. In addition, quasi in situ XPS results suggest the hydrogen spillover effect is more likely to occur on Pd single atoms during the electrochemical process. Our work may pave an interesting route for the rational design of highly-efficient single-atom catalyst, and the elucidation of corresponding enhanced reaction mechanisms by the utilization of advanced characterization techniques.

A novel 0D/1D CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 nanofiber-membrane photocatalyst with step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction was fabricated by means of the electrospinning method. The disintegration of CuBi 2 O 4 microspheres under a high voltage electrospinning process led to the simultaneous formation of CuBi 2 O 4 nanoparticles on WO 3 nanofibers, therefore constructing well dispersed CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 nano-heterojunctions. The CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 composite photocatalyst followed the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which promoted the efficient charge transfer across the interface, thereby solving the problem that the narrow-bandgap CuBi 2 O 4 had strong light-harvesting ability but easy recombination of photo-generated carriers. Moreover, such S-scheme heterojunction also achieved the spatial separation of photo-induced electrons and holes while ensuring the promising redox abilities in both WO 3 and CuBi 2 O 4 . Hence, the CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 composite photocatalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in environmental remediation under weak-visible-light irradiation (5 W LED lamp), and its photocatalytic activity for tetracycline degradation was significantly improved, which was 8.1 times and 3.6 times than that of WO 3 nanofibers and pure CuBi 2 O 4 microspheres, respectively. The radical species trapping tests indicated that·O 2 − and h + were the main active radicals in the tetracycline photodegradation reaction, and the high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry test clarified three possible degradation reaction pathways of tetracycline. This work presented a facile method to fabricate 0D/1D CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 composite nanofiber photocatalyst with well-dispersed CuBi 2 O 4 @WO 3 nano-heterojunctions, and also provided a new idea for the preparation of new nanocomposite photocatalyst based on electrospinning process.

Defect engineering has received extensive attention as an effective method to tune the gas sensing properties of semiconductor materials. Here, defective WO3 (D-WO3) nanosheets were obtained by a simple hydrogenation process with a detection limit as low as 5 ppb for dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) and a response of 2.3 times that of the initial WO3 nanosheets to 100 ppb DMTS. Importantly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the partial loss of oxygen atoms in D-WO3 nanosheets, and density functional theory calculations found that the W sites near the oxygen defect showed higher adsorption energy for DMTS and transferred more electrons during the gas interaction, indicating that the active W site caused by oxygen atom loss can effectively enhance the reactivity of two-dimensional WO3 nanosheets. Different from the traditional oxygen defect model, this work reveals the positive effect of active metal sites on gas sensing for the first time, which is expected to provide an effective reference for the sensing application of defect engineering in metal oxides.

ABSTRACT Simultaneously utilizing photogenerated electrons and holes to convert renewable biomass and its derivatives into corresponding value-added products and hydrogen (H 2 ) is a promising strategy to deal with the energy and environmental crisis. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal method to construct a direct Z-scheme CdS/WO 3 binary composite for photocatalytic coupling redox reaction, simultaneously producing H 2 and selectively converting aromatic alcohols into aromatic aldehydes in one pot. Compared with bare CdS and WO 3 , the CdS/WO 3 binary composite exhibits significantly enhanced performance for this photocatalytic coupled redox reaction, which is ascribed to the extended light harvesting range, efficient charge carrier separation rate and optimized redox capability of CdS/WO 3 composite. Furthermore, the feasibility of converting various aromatic alcohols to corresponding aldehydes coupled with H 2 evolution on the CdS/WO 3 photocatalyst is proved and a reasonable reaction mechanism is proposed. It is hoped that this work can provide a new insight into the construction of direct Z-scheme photocatalysts to effectively utilize the photogenerated electrons and holes for photocatalytic coupled redox reaction.

Complementary devices with double-hybrid electrodes are prepared, assembled, and studied to improve the performance of complementary devices and take advantage of the excellent performance of composite electrochromic films. WO 3 films are prepared through the seed-assisted hydrothermal method, and polyaniline (PANI) is coated on WO 3 via electrochemical deposition. The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the WO 3 /PANI composite films are better than those of WO 3 films. The improvement in the electrochromic properties of the WO 3 /PANI composite films is mainly due to PANI’s modification of the surface morphology of the WO 3 films and its excellent conductivity. Then, a complementary device with a double-hybrid electrode is assembled. The WO 3 /PANI and NiO/PB electrode films are used as the cathode and anode of the device, respectively, and KCl solution is employed as the electrolyte. The light modulation range of the complementary device is 55.71%, the coloring time is t c = 3.2 s, the bleached time is t b = 8.1 s, and the coloring efficiency is 24.63 cm 2 ·C −1 . All of these values are better than those of the single WO 3 and NiO devices. The electrode reaction process of the complementary device is synchronous and synergetic. Thus, the device exhibits good electrochromic performance.

Metal ion modification is considered to be an effective way to construct metal oxides with specific physical and chemical properties. In this paper, we prepare a tungsten oxide (WO3) film co-modified by Co-ion and Mo-ion to serve as the electrochromic material through a one-step electrodeposition method. The effect of electrodeposition time on film thickness, surface morphology and electrochromic properties is systematically studied as well. The results show that, compared with pure WO3film, the surface morphology of the tungsten oxide film modified by Co-ion and Mo-ion (WO3: Co, Mo) is significantly different. The Co and Mo co-modified film possesses a higher transmission modulation (58.5% at 600 nm) and rapid switching speed (coloring and bleaching time are 2.7 s and 5.6 s, respectively), low impedance value and excellent cycle stability. The performance enhancement is mainly attributed to the coral-like structure of the membrane, which provides a larger specific surface area, more ion adsorption sites and faster ion diffusion. Therefore, this work provides a fast and low-cost method to prepare tungsten oxide electrochromic films co-modified with cobalt and molybdenum ions. At the same time, it also provides an idea to obtain films with different electrochromic properties by adjusting the film thickness. Keywords:electrochromic;metal ion modification;structure;WO3film

In this study, a structurally well-designed PdO@WO 3 core–shell, p–n heterojunction architecture was fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method. Its material characterization was performed via X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analyses. Besides, the gas sensing properties of pure WO 3 , PdO–WO 3 , and PdO@WO 3 nanocomposites were investigated. By benefiting from the unique synergistic effect between catalytic sensing and p–n heterojunction structure, the PdO@WO 3 core–shell nanostructure showed considerably enhanced acetone sensing performance compared with the other structures; especially, its response toward 50 ppm acetone gas was up to 40, four times higher than that of the pure WO 3 sensor. Its response/recovery times were also significantly reduced and its optimal operating temperature decreased from 250 °C to 200 °C. Finally, the possible sensing mechanism for the proposed PdO@WO 3 core–shell, p–n heterojunction architecture is discussed here; the considerable enhancement in the acetone sensing capability could be attributed to its well-designed fabrication.

Near-infrared responsive photothermal therapy is an emerging and non-invasive cancer treatment. However, the inability of real-time imaging tracking and monitoring for the photothermal agents (PTAs) severely limits the accuracy of treatment. In this study, a series of visual xGd-WO 3 @PEG PTAs were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method. The effect of different Gd doping amounts on the structure, morphology, and photothermal performance has been investigated in detail. Under the near-infrared laser irradiation, the samples exhibited satisfied photothermal properties of hyperthermia in a short time. The photothermal conversion efficiency and stability of the xGd-WO 3 @PEG (x = 7 %) were further investigated. Subsequently, the near-infrared thermal and CT imaging performance was studied. The in vitro cell viability on LO2 normal and 4T1 cancer cells have also been conducted. The results showed the xGd-WO 3 @PEG nanomaterials have excellent potential in imaging-guided photothermal cancer therapy.
