Trace-level methanol detection at room temperature enabled by single-atom Pd stabilized on defective 2D WS2

Haoshuang Zhang,Tianshuang Wang,Liupeng Zhao,Rui Jin,Peng Sun,Geyu Lu

Conventional semiconducting gas sensors operating at high temperature (150-400 ℃) are unsuitable for detecting highly flammable methanol (CH 3 OH), thus necessitating room-temperature (RT) operation. However, most reported RT CH 3 OH sensors, hindered by low sensitivity, high detection limit, and poor stability, are impractical for precision gaseous analysis. This study presents a high-performance RT CH 3 OH sensor employing single-atom Pd stabilized onto defective WS 2 nanosheets (Pd SA@WS 2 NSs) as sensing material, overcoming the sensitivity, limit of detection, and stability limitations. Notably, 0.3   wt% Pd SA@WS 2 NSs-based RT sensor exhibited high response (33.7% to 100 ppb CH 3 OH), stable repeatability and low detection limit at 23 ℃, surpassing the reported RT CH 3 OH sensors. The enhanced gas-sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of the highly catalytic activity of atomically dispersed Pd, and the high methanol adsorption at sulfur defects on the WS 2 surface. As a proof-of-concept, we constructed a portable real-time monitoring system using the as-prepared RT sensor, coupled with dynamic threshold alarm functionality that enables immediate indoor air quality assessment and early warning. This work establishes a new paradigm for CH 3 OH leakage monitoring.

Host-guest assisted carbon quantum dots/WS2 photoelectrochemical solution-gated graphene field-effect transistor for diquat detection

Hairui Wang,Yufeng Zhang,Na Xu,Jianfeng Wu,Ping Nie,Xuelin Zhang,Limin Chang,Jianwei Xie

An innovative photoelectrochemical solution-gated graphene transistor (PEC-SGGT) was developed in this work for the sensitive detection of diquat (DQ). In this system, DQ acts as a molecular bridge that directs the pre-formation of a DQ@carbon quantum dots (DQ@CQDs) complex in solution and subsequently guides its assembly onto the WS 2 quantum dots–gold nanoparticles–cyclodextrin (WS 2 /Au/CD) substrate. This process leads to the formation of a WS 2 /Au/CD@DQ/CQDs photosensitizer with enhanced photoelectronic properties. When integrated as a PEC gate electrode, this material effectively modulates the channel current of the PEC-SGGT device, enabling accurate quantification of DQ with an ultralow detection limit of 0.45 pM. The sensing strategy combines host–guest recognition with electrostatic self-assembly to achieve selective DQ capture while generating robust, device-compatible gating signals. Overall, this work presents a promising paradigm for the ultrasensitive detection of small-molecule toxins.

Synergistically Coupling Chalcogen Vacancy-Modified WS2–xSex Microspheres with a Conductive Carbon Network for Sodium-Ion Storage

Xi Hu,Yike He,Jingxiong Ma,Wenjing Dai,Yingning Zhou,Yangguang Li,Qiushi Qin,Bo Zou,Xing Li,Mingshan Wang

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a typical transition metal sulfide anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with multiple valence transitions and a high specific capacity. However, bulk WS2 suffers from inferior electron conductivity and a sluggish sodium-ion migration rate, severely limiting electrochemical activity. In this work, a strategy to significantly enhance the sodium-ion storage efficiency of tungsten disulfide by synergistically coupling chalcogen vacancy (sulfur and selenium) engineering with a conductive carbon network (Vc-WS2–xSex@NC) is proposed. The design approach addresses the critical limitations of bulk WS2 by introducing abundant chalcogen vacancies that act as both negative charge centers and electron carriers, thereby improving the electrochemical kinetics. Simultaneously, these chalcogen vacancies also serve as active sites to significantly contribute high levels of Na+ pseudocapacitive storage. Furthermore, the unique hybrid architecture, featuring nitrogen-doped carbon nanolayers intimately coupled with chalcogen vacancy-enriched WS2–xSex microspheres, creates a seamless and highly efficient ion/electron transport network. Thus, this design enables the Vc-WS2–xSex@NC composite to achieve an exceptional specific capacity of 328 mA h g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 in SIBs, with an impressive 94% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Moreover, the practical applicability of this material is demonstrated through the assembly of a full cell (Vc-WS2–xSex@NC||Na3V2(PO4)3), which exhibits a remarkable reversible capacity retention of 87% after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g–1.

The effect of peroxymonosulfate in WS2 nanosheets for the removal of diclofenac: Information exposure and degradation pathway

Zhen Chen,Shaoxiong He,Mingshan Zhu,Chaohai Wei

The search for a suitable heterogeneous catalyst in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation holds tremendous promise for the degradation of organic pollutants. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides such as WS 2 exhibit broad applications in heterogeneous catalysis, and we first extended its application in PMS activation in this work. It was found that WS 2 could efficiently activate PMS resulting in the degradation of diclofenac (DCF). The results show that the PMS offers direct oxidation, and WS 2 could initiate PMS to produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radical (·O 2 − ). This resulted in the improved removal of DCF in the WS 2 /PMS system. Furthermore, the degradation pathway of DCF was proposed according to the detected intermediates/products and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Degradation intermediates and the evaluation of product toxicity indicated that the developed WS 2 /PMS system was a safe and detoxifying process while also offering efficient DCF removal. This study offers more insight into the development of suitable materials for the activation of PMS and gives clear direction for the degradation of DCF and its toxic intermediates.

Cu9S5-nanowire-pinned-WS2 sheets on hollow cubic carbon for synergistic promotion in K-ion battery performance

Qingqing Huang,Liyun Cao,Yuhang Wang,Jiayin Li,Yiting Wang,Shiyin Wei,Shuzhuo Bai,Koji Kajiyoshi,Yijun Liu,Zhenjiang Li,Jianfeng Huang

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) presents a layered structure with a high theoretical capacity (433 mA h g−1) in potassium-ion batteries, making it a promising anode material. However, its kinetics is poor with limited practical capacity and it is still a challenge to design new structures to improve its kinetics. In this work, a hollow Cu9S5/C/WS2 composite structure is designed. It is used as an anode in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) with a high reversible capacity (406 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at 200 mA g−1) and excellent rate performance (246 mA h g−1 at 20 A g−1). These results are attributed to its unique hollow composite structure, where the WS2 sheets are pinned on hollow cubic carbon by Cu9S5 nanowires. On one hand, the introduction of Cu9S5 nanowires expands the layer spacing of WS2 and forms a K+ fast diffusion channel. On the other hand, hollow carbon and Cu9S5 nanowires form a fast electron transmission path, which improves the charge transport rate. Additionally, the use of hollow carbon and Cu9S5 nanowires as a framework enhances structural stability. The synergistic effect of these aspects finally realizes fast and stable K+ storage. This work provides a new insight into the design of high-performance potassium storage devices using layered metal sulfides.

Smartphone-assisted dual-mode turn-off-on red-emission AuNCs/WS2 FRET sensor for detection of carbendazim

Sheng Gong,Fan Nie,Lingxuan Ma,Jiali Wan,Yu Yang,Wensheng Zhang,Jinchao Wei,Peng Li

The overuse of pesticides poses a significant threat to human health, driving the need for accurate and rapid strategies to identify various pesticides. A fluorescent nano-sensor (R-AuNCs@Aptamer) was developed by integrating an amino-modified carbendazim aptamer with red-colored gold nanoclusters (R-AuNCs). We subsequently engineered an aptamer-triggered turn-off-on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platform, employing R-AuNCs@Aptamer in conjunction with tungsten disulfide nanosheets (WS 2 NS). In this setup, the carbendazim aptamer-stabilized red-emitting R-AuNCs (∼655 nm) served as the energy donor, while WS 2 NS acted as a fluorescence quencher. Upon the introduction of carbendazim, alterations in fluorescence intensity were monitored at 655 nm, facilitating the recognition of carbendazim. The resulting fluorescent nano-sensor displayed outstanding selectivity towards carbendazim, exhibiting a broad detection range of 0.1 to 1000 μg/L and remarkable sensitivity with a low limit of detection. It demonstrated reliability and practicality when applied to Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma samples, with recoveries ranging from 90 % to 110 %. By changing the aptamer sequence, this sensor can be customized to detect different pollutants, exhibiting excellent tailorability and broad application potential.

Disclosing synergistically kinetic regulation mechanism of WS2/MoS2/C microspheres to achieve high-efficiency sodium ion storage

Xi Hu,Mingshan Wang,Rui Hu,Lin Yang,Qian Li,Zhenliang Yang,Jianlong Yang,Qiong Duan,Junchen Chen,Bo Yu,Bingshu Guo,Zhiyuan Ma,Yun Huang,Xing Li

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered as potentially the most promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries, but still suffers from multistep electrochemical processes, resulting in sluggish Na + migration and poor Na + storage capacity in bulk materials. In this work, two kinds of TMDs (WS 2 and MoS 2 ) with similar energy band structures are rationally designed by atomic-scale regulated growth to synthesize porous WS 2 /MoS 2 /Carbon microspheres to disclose their internal kinetics regulation mechanism. It shows that due to the introduction of abundant unsaturated sulfur sites by WS 2 and MoS 2 lattice mismatches, which enhances charge accumulation and serves as active sites to increase the Na + pseudocapacitive storage. Furthermore, a built-in electric field between WS 2 and MoS 2 is formed by the rich heterojunction interfaces, promoting the kinetics of electrochemical transformations of two metallic elements in both WS 2 and MoS 2 . Therefore, the optimized WS 2 /MoS 2 /Carbon provides a discharge specific capacity of 499 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 with a high capacity retention rate of 97.5 %, as well as specific capacity of 435 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 with a capacity retention rate of 91 % for WS 2 /MoS 2 /Carbon || Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full cell, which demonstrates satisfactory capacity and outstanding cycling stability.

Nanosheet-shaped WS2/ICG nanocomposite for photodynamic/photothermal synergistic bacterial clearance and cutaneous regeneration on infectious wounds

Zhiling Chen,Rui Zhang,Tao Wang,Yanan Peng,Qionglin Zhou,Peipei Cao,Xinxin Xiao,Fengling Li,Ziming Wei,Yuanyuan Wang,Dan Xu,Bin Qiao,Shaowen Cheng,Qiang Wu,Lina Niu

Bacterial infections present a significant threat to human health, a challenge that is intensified by the slow pace of novel antibiotic development and the swift emergence of bacterial resistance. The development of novel antibacterial agents is crucial. Indocyanine green (ICG), a widely used imaging dye, efficiently generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and heat for treating bacterial infections but suffers from aggregation and instability, limiting its efficacy. In this study, tungsten disulfide (WS₂) nanosheet with a high surface area was used to load ICG, creating a multifunctional nanocomposite, WS 2 /ICG, aimed at treating bacteria-infected wounds. The two-dimensional surface structure of WS₂ provides dispersible binding sites for ICG, and the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits excellent stability. Under near-infrared (NIR) laser excitation, the generated heat further synergistically enhances the yield of singlet oxygen. Additionally, the WS₂/ICG nanoplatform synergistically combines photothermal effect with photodynamic effect, achieving a “1 + 1 > 2” enhancement. Upon NIR laser excitation, the nanocomposite disrupts bacterial cell membranes through localized heating and ROS accumulation, leading to energy metabolism system disruption and subsequent bacterial lysis and death. The findings demonstrate WS₂/ICG's outstanding antibacterial properties and biocompatibility, effectively treating skin infections and promoting tissue regeneration, providing a simple and promising solution for bacteria-infected wounds.

A MoS2/Au NPs/WS2 heterostructures photodetector with high on/off ratio and low standby power consumption

Chengsheng Yang,Lei Liu,Desheng Li,Changming Liu,Juan Wang,Yingkai Liu,Hui Zhang

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) hold great promise for optoelectronic devices owing to their unique electronic and optical properties. However, their typically high dark current severely compromises the photodetection performance. To overcome this challenge, we fabricated a type-II band-aligned MoS 2 /WS 2 heterostructures and innovatively incorporated a layer of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) at its interface. The resulting MoS 2 /Au NPs/WS 2 heterostructures exhibits drastically suppressed dark current while well preserving the photocurrent. Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) measurements confirm the type-II band alignment. We demonstrate that in the dark, the Au NPs in contact with MoS 2 create an electron-depletion region in the conduction band, effectively blocking the majority carrier transport and thus reducing the dark current. Under illumination, however, the photo-generated electrons possess sufficient energy to overcome this barrier, leaving the photocurrent largely unaffected. Therefore, under a 5 V bias, compared with the pristine MoS 2 /WS 2 heterostructures, the MoS 2 /Au NPs/WS 2 heterostructures device exhibits a reduction in dark current density by approximately 2.27 × 10 3 times, while the photocurrent density shows only a slight decrease of about 2.19 times. This remarkable contrast leads to a significant enhancement of the light-to-dark current ratio from 4.71 × 10 1 to 5.01 × 10 4 and an expansion of the linear dynamic range from 46.81 dB to 107.58 dB. Furthermore, the suppressed dark current directly translates to a ∼2.27 × 10 3 -fold reduction in standby power consumption under dark conditions. Our work, integrating plasmonic nanoparticles into the interface of a TMDCs heterostructures, provides a novel and effective strategy for engineering high-performance, low-power two-dimensional photodetectors.

Tribological Properties of Solid Lubricant WS2 in Dimples on the Cylinder of Diesel Engine at High Temperature

Jingguo Fu,Dengqing Ma,Liyang Fan,Zhiwei Yu,Huabing Yin,Chunsheng Ma

Solid lubricant WS2was encapsulated in the dimples on the cylinder surface by the hot-pressing method. The tribological and releasing performance of the as-prepared sample were investigated under high temperature conditions. The results indicate that, compared with the original cylinder, WS2in the dimples exhibited better tribological properties at high temperature than at room temperature. The average friction coefficients of the as-prepared samples were about 0.13 and 0.15 at high temperature and room temperature, respectively, which were 27.8% and 16.7% lower than that of the original cylinder, respectively. Moreover, compared with the original cylinder, the anti-adhesion time of the as-prepared sample increased 2.3-fold. Additionally, the reduced viscosity of the lubricating oil caused by high temperature accelerated the erosion effect and release rate of the solid lubricant in the dimples. Thus, the polar additives in the lubricating oil and the chemical reactions between the cylinder substrates and solid lubricants that WS2released from the dimples are the main factors in friction reduction. This study provides some guidance for anti-friction design of cylinders under high temperature conditions.

Polydopamine-sensitized WS2/black-TiO2 heterojunction for histone acetyltransferase detection with enhanced visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical activity

Yan Chen,Huanshun Yin,Fei Li,Jie Zhou,Lingsong Wang,Jun Wang,Shiyun Ai

A kind of novel heterojunction structure with black TiO 2 and WS 2 was prepared with matched energy band and significantly improved visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical activity. Then, to further improve the photoelectrochemical activity of this heterojunction, solid-state electron donor of polydopamine was employed with satisfactory result. The band gap, potential of conduction band and valence band was investigated using Mott-Schottky curve, VB-XPS and UV–vis diffuser reflectance techniques. These materials were also characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, IR, Roman spectra, and EPR image. The improved photoactivity was confirmed by monitoring and comparing the photocurrent response of black TiO 2 , WS 2 and Black TiO 2 /WS 2 heterojunction. To explore the applicability of this novel heterojunction structure, a kind of photoelectrochemical biosensor was constructed for histone acetyltransferase p300 detection using black TiO 2 and WS 2 as photoactive material and polydopamine as electron donor. Under optimized conditions, the photoelectrochemical biosensor shows wide linear range from 0.01 to 500 nM for histone acetyltransferase p300 detection. The detection limit is 0.0033 nM (S/N = 3). The sensor has good selectivity, stability and reproducibility. The inhibition tests show that aminoglycoside antibiotics significantly inhibits the activity of histone acetyltransferase and the IC 50 of typical tobramycin, streptomycin sulfate and kanamycin sulfate were 10.41, 13.31 and 15.42 μM, respectively.
