This paper introduces a Z-scheme Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 heterojunction composite photocatalyst prepared by an in-situ growth method. The photocatalytic properties of the prepared samples under visible light irradiation were studied by degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results of photocatalytic experiments and cycle experiments showed that Ag 3 PO 4 /Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 -20% composite exhibited much better photocatalytic activity and stability than pure Ag 3 PO 4 and pure Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 . The capture experiment results showed that h + is the main active substance in the process of SMX degradation. In addition, we proposed a possible photocatalytic mechanism based on the results of experiment and characterization. The formation of a direct Z-Scheme photocatalytic system promoted the separation of carriers, thereby improving the stability and activity of the composite samples.

A Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction is successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method using sodium bismuthate and indium nitrate as the source materials. The crystal structure, composition, micromorphology, and optical property of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and solid ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra. The Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic degradation capacity for Rhodamine B, which is better than that of pure Bi 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 . The photogenerated charges separation and transfer process of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction follows a direct Z-scheme mechanism under UV–vis light irradiation. The trapping experiment indicates that oxidative radicals including •OH, h + , and •O 2 − play crucial roles in the photodegradation process. The outstanding photodegradation capacity is ascribed to spatially separated charge carriers, fast-charge transportation characteristic, and special bandgap structure of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction. The introduction of H + and OH − ions into the reaction system promotes the formation of •OH and •O 2 − radicals, significantly enhancing the photodegradation rate of RhB. This study presents a new insight into the construction of the Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with potential application in wastewater treatment.

In this study, for the first time, BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalysts were synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method. The influence of systematically varied g-C 3 N 4 contents on the photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was evaluated through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and acid red 18 (AR 18) as target pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated the photocatalytic performance of the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composites was greatly enhanced compared to pure photocatalyst. In addition, the optimized photocatalytic efficiency for MB and AR 18 was achieved when the mass percentage of g-C 3 N 4 in the composite was 60%. And based on our analysis, it is proposed that the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 has the characteristic of direct Z-scheme type photocatalyst. The excellent photocatalytic performance was interpreted in terms of enhanced visible light absorption and efficient separation of electrons and holes. Compared with hydrothermal method, this method only involves sintering in air at a moderately elevated temperature, so it is efficient and more preferred for industrial scale production.

Building efficient catalysts is an urgent issue in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, and Z-scheme heterojunction structures can availably suppress the recombination of photo generated carriers and improve photocatalytic performance. This study successfully prepared a new type of Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /Bi-MOF composite photocatalyst through self-assembly method. After 5 h of simulated sunlight exposure, the optimized sample 50-Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /Bi-MOF photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO efficiency (23.78 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) was 5.09 times higher than pure Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 , and the CH 4 yield (5.39 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) was 2.52 times that of pure Bi-MOF. In addition, in the cyclic experiment, the catalyst had high stability and reusability. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism was confirmed through band structure analysis, Electron spin resonance (ESR), Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and other related characterizations. This work provided an important strategy for designing efficient Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Layered delafossite, an inherently p-type semiconductor, has emerged as a highly promising photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, its PEC performance and scalability are significantly limited by the shortcomings of conventional photoelectrode fabrication techniques, which often involve inferior physical adhesion or require harsh processing conditions. In this study, a Cu x O layer is introduced via in-situ oxidation of a copper foam (CF) substrate to achieve embedded anchoring of delafossite CuFeO 2 (CFO), thereby developing a robust embedded CF/(CFO@Cu x O) photocathode. This configuration features extensive and strong 3D semiconductor/semiconductor heterointerfaces. The embedded structure significantly reduces the carrier diffusion length to the CF, thereby enhancing photocarrier collection efficiency. Additionally, this unique geometric design provides abundant heterointerfaces with all-round contact, promoting efficient carrier separation while strengthening interfacial binding. Theoretical calculations further reveal the formation of a strong built-in electric field and a Z-scheme heterostructure, which facilitate effective photocarrier separation and transfer while maintaining robust redox activity. Remarkably, the photocurrent density of the embedded CF/(CFO@Cu x O) photocathode at zero bias is 2.73-fold higher than that of the traditional sandwich-stacked CF/Cu x O/CFO photocathode and 21.55-fold higher than that of the original CF/CFO photocathode. Furthermore, the scalability of this approach is demonstrated through the fabrication of a 100 cm 2 embedded photocathode. This work presents a scalable and cost-effective nanofabrication technique for robust photoactive films, enabling efficient and stable PEC water splitting.

Graphical Utilizing solar energy to upcycling plastic waste into value-added chemicals is a promising strategy for realizing sustainable development. In this study, an efficient photocatalytic conversion of polyethylene plastic into syngas (CO+H 2 mixtures) by using a ZnS/Ga 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst is reported. The strategy provides a green approach to effectively mitigate plastic pollution under environmentally friendly conditions. The photocatalytic conversion of plastic waste into value-added products using solar energy presents a promising approach for promoting environmental sustainability. Nonetheless, the emission of CO 2 during the conventional photocatalytic degradation process remains a major hurdle that impedes its further development. In this study, we propose an efficient photocatalytic conversion of polyethylene plastic into syngas (CO+H 2 mixtures) by using a ZnS/Ga 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. It is found that the strong redox capability of photogenerated holes and electrons in the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst can promote the oxidative depolymerization of PE plastic, concurrently enabling the efficient reduction of the intermediate product CO 2 into syngas. Furthermore, this system also demonstrates applicability in the conversion and upcycling of other polyolefin plastics including polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. Our findings highlight the potential of polyolefin plastics photoreforming for the production of syngas under environmentally benign conditions.

The construction of heterojunction is an effective and controllable method to improve the photocatalytic decomposition of water to produce hydrogen by semiconductor photocatalyst . In this paper, NiCo 2 S 4 yolk-shell nanospheres and Mn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S nanoparticles were synthesised by solvothermal and hydrothermal methods , and then Mn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S nanoparticles were loaded onto the surface of NiCo 2 S 4 to form a dense Z-scheme heterojunction . Without precious metals as cocatalysts, the maximum hydrogen production of the optimized Mn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S/NiCo 2 S 4 reached 21.41 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 . The morphology, structure and optical properties of the prepared samples were characterized, and the experimental results and theoretical calculations showed that Mn 0.8 Cd 0.2 S/NiCo 2 S 4 with Z-scheme heterojunction could improve the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production by effectively transferring and separating the photogenerated electrons and holes.

During the synthesis of deep-blue perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), they generally emerge as a two-dimensional byproduct with poor yield and low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) due to amine ligand enrichment-induced abundant surface defects. Herein, we provide a colloidal synthesis method to prepare deep-blue CsPbBr3 PQDs in a green nontoxic solvent via strategic Z-type ligand engineering. Z-type ligands of zinc octanoate enable the formation of robust coordination bonds with surface bromide ions of PQDs, maintaining acid–base equilibrium and reducing excess amine enrichment on the PQDs surface. Consequently, homogeneous and monodispersed PQDs with improved PLQY of 73% are successfully synthesized, achieving efficient deep-blue LEDs with a peak EQE of 5.46%, a maximum luminance of 847.6 cd/m2, and an operational half-lifetime of 14 min. The devices exhibit color coordinates of (0.137, 0.049), closely approximating the Rec. 2020 blue standard. Our work offers a potentially eco-friendly and viable route for realizing high-performance LEDs in the deep-blue region.

MXenes are remarkable 2D materials for microwave absorption applications, with respect to physical and chemical properties. However, their elevated electrical conductivity and impedance mismatch results in a diminished microwave absorption rate. To overcome these issues, we have prepared TiVCrC 2 T x and Ti 0.5 V 2 Cr 0.5 C 2 T x MXenes using an element doping strategy. Thanks to their suitable dielectric constant, lattice distortion, and a large amount of defects caused by multiple transition metal atoms, results in an increase in polarization loss, enhanced impedance matching, and increased electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption capability. The experimental results showed that few-layer TiVCrC 2 T x with a thickness of 3.19 mm and operating frequency as 6.88 GHz can achieve a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.8 dB. Additionally, it has an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2.88 GHz. On the other hand, few-layer Ti 0.5 V 2 Cr 0.5 C 2 T x with a thickness of 1.95 mm and operating at a frequency of 10.72 GHz has an RL min of −52.75 dB and an EAB of 1.44 GHz. The advantages of the element doping strategy in enhancing the microwave absorption performance of MXene are demonstrated by its excellent EM wave absorption capability, thin matching thickness, and low filling amounts of only 30 wt percent. These results suggest that doped MXene showed highly promising application in the field of EM wave absorption.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production utilizing abundant solar energy to produce high-calorie, clean, and pollution-free hydrogen is an important approach to solving environmental and resource problems. In this work, a high-efficiency flower-like ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S photocatalyst was constructed through element doping and the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction. The synergistic effect of Cu doping and the built-in electric field in the heterojunction enhanced light absorption and utilization by the ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers, accelerated the separation and transfer of photogenerated electrons and effectively inhibited electron–hole recombination. Thus the photocatalytic hydrogen production ability of the ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers was increased significantly. The highly stable ZnSe/Cu 0.08 Zn 0.92 S microflowers could provide excellent catalysis of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

The solid solution of GaN and ZnO (GaN:ZnO) is a promising photocatalyst applicable to visible-light-driven overall water splitting. However, the band gap of active GaN:ZnO remains as large as ca. 2.7 eV because of the loss of ZnO during the widely applied NH3 nitridation process. Herein, particulate GaN:ZnO exhibiting a band gap of 2.3 eV was synthesized via calcination of a mixture of Ga2O3, Zn, and NH4Cl in a sealed evacuated tube. The synthesis method was also featured with a high nitrogen utilization rate of 87%. The prepared narrow-band-gap GaN:ZnO was active in the overall water-splitting reaction. In the presence of sacrificial reagents, the apparent quantum yields of GaN:ZnO at 420 nm for H2 and O2 generation were 5.1 and 14.3%, respectively. GaN:ZnO was applied as an oxygen evolution photocatalyst to construct a Z-scheme overall water-splitting system with SrTiO3:Rh as a hydrogen evolution photocatalyst, which achieved a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 3.7 × 10–2% and a remarkable photochemical stability up to 100 h. This work provides an approach to the synthesis of narrow-band-gap GaN:ZnO solid solution and shows the potential of this material in H2 production from water under long-wavelength visible light.

The selection of simple and effective photocatalysts is a challenge for removing Norfloxacin (NOR) from water. This study successfully synthesized CuO nanoclusters and titanium dioxide (CuO/TiO 2 ) Z-scheme heterojunction using the facile in situ self-growing method and used for photocatalytic degradation of NOR. The 1.4 % CuO/TiO 2 system achieves an 84.88 % NOR degradation efficiency in 60 min and maintains over 78.42 % efficiency after five cycles when exposed to visible light, which is higher than that of CuO and TiO 2 , respectively. The internal electric field established between them expedited the separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs, thereby boosting photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the active species that take part in the photocatalytic reaction were identified as ·O 2 − , ·OH, and h + radicals. According to the mass spectrometry (MS) test, the possible three photocatalytic degradation pathways of NOR were investigated. Finally, the heterojunction formation and charge transfer mechanism of CuO/TiO 2 are proposed and validated with DFT calculation. This study applies simple, low-cost CuO/TiO 2 for efficient NOR degradation under visible light, providing an insight into the scale-up removal of NOR from water.
