Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) for energy storage applications require a large discharge energy density and high discharge/charge efficiency. Here, 0.87BaTiO 3 -0.13Bi(Zn 2/3 (Nb 0.85 Ta 0.15 ) 1/3 )O 3 (BTBZNT) powders were synthesized via solid-state reactions, and MLCCs with sub-micron grains were fabricated using a two-step sintering method. The BTBZNT MLCCs, which are well-defined relaxor ferroelectrics, possessed relatively high permittivity, dielectric sublinearity, and negligible hysteresis. An AC breakdown strength ( BDS ) enhancement from 511 to 1047 kV/cm was obtained as the dielectric thickness ( D ) decreased from 26 to 5 μm. The strong correlation between BDS and D , described as B D S ∝ D − 0.368 , agreed well with the general macroscopic theory of thermal breakdown in insulators. The enhanced BDS afforded the BTBZNT MLCCs ( D ∼9 μm) with excellent energy storage properties with a maximum discharge energy density of 10.5 J/cm 3 and discharge/charge efficiency of 93.7% under a maximum electric field of 1000 kV/cm. The MLCCs also exhibited excellent thermal stability with discharge energy density variation <±5% over a wide temperature range of −50 to 175 °C under an electric field of 400 kV/cm. These remarkable performances make BTBZNT MLCCs promising for energy storage applications.

ZnO NRAs are grown on ITO substrates by a simple chemical method. CdS QDs were deposited on ZnO NRAs by SILAR. N719 was synthesized by dipping method. J–V analysis indicates that by inserting a layer of CdS QDs, the conversion efficiency of DSSCs was improved obviously. The device with CdS QDs shows the higher conversion efficiency due to the three reasons: (1) CdS QDs enhanced adsorption spectra of DSSCs in the visible region; (2) CdS QDs block the formation of Zn 2+ /dye complex, it is beneficial for electros transport from dye to ZnO photoanode. It is the key to obtain higher conversion efficiency; (3) FRET dynamics exists by the introduction of CdS QDs.

Licorzinc is a commonly used immunomodulator, but faces poor water solubility, high oral dose, and side effects of zinc accumulation by long-term administration. Herein, a new licorzincform was developed by adsorbing glycyrrhizic acid (GA) into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (GA@ZIF-8) with superior solubility and acid-responsive drug release properties. Then, a dual-continuous microneedle patch was developed for simultaneous transdermal delivery of GA@ZIF-8 and monitoring Zn 2+ in local tissues, where dissolving microneedles as a drug delivery unit were fabricated from hyaluronic acid. In contrast, swollen hydrogel microneedles as a diagnostic unit were prepared from double cross-linking of N-acryloyl-glycinamide and α-methylacrylic acid and hybridized with Eu 3+ and terpyridine (TPy). The microneedles for transdermal GA@ZIF-8 delivery were completely dissolved in 2 min, which improved the cyclophosphamide-induced hair follicle recession in mice by reducing CD8 + NKG2D + T cells infiltration, inhibiting Jak receptor activation, and decreasing IL-15 and IFN-γ. Additionally, as a sensor unit, the microneedles rapidly absorbed water swelled when stabbed into the skin, and fluoresced red when exposed to 365 nm light. Zn 2+ in the inter tissue fluid competes with Eu 3+ in the TPy-Eu 3+ complex and coordinates with Tpy, which triggers a change in fluorescence. Notably, the detection Zn 2+ concentration range was 10 –8 M–10 –1 M, and it was not disturbed by metal ions including Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ , suggesting that it is competent to be applied as a real-time chemosensor of Zn 2+ . Collectively, this newly designed system with both therapeutic and diagnostic functions provides a new strategy for treating zinc-related diseases.

Rampant dendrite growth and severe parasitic reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface significantly limit the cycle life of aqueous zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs). In this study, sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) as one green polymer was introduced into ZnSO4 electrolyte to construct a multifunctional layer on the surface of Zn plates. Experimental analyses and theoretical calculations show that the presence of the SLS layer, rich in oxygen-containing functional groups (−SO3–), can not only modulate the structure of the electric double layer (EDL) to suppress interfacial side reactions caused by free H2O and SO42–, but also promote (101)-oriented deposition by selectively controlling the deposition behavior of Zn2+ through specific adsorption on different crystalline surfaces. The optimized electrolyte allows stable Zn//Zn symmetric cells to achieve a cumulative plating capacity exceeding 4 Ah cm–2 at a high areal capacity of 5 mAh cm–2, and stable cycling for more than 1000 cycles with an excellent average Coulombic efficiency of 99.34% in Zn//Cu asymmetric cells. The Zn//AC ZHSC exhibits ultralong cycling stability of over 40,000 cycles in the optimized electrolyte, with a capacity decay rate as low as 0.000285% per cycle.

Inspired by natural mussels, a novel dopamine-grafted cellulose nanofiber (DA-CNF) functional filler and Zn 2+ were incorporated into polysiloxane-polyurea to create advanced composites for Internet of Things applications. Through experimental characterization, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and finite element (FE) analysis, we thoroughly investigated the mechanism by which DA-CNF and Zn 2+ improve the mechanical and self-healing properties of the polymer. The innovative synergistic effect of extra-added dynamic hydrogen bonds and metal ion coordination bonds between the filler and matrix simultaneously enhanced mechanical strength and self-healing efficiency, overcoming the traditional trade-off problem in conventional polymers. The results showed that the tensile strength and healing efficiency of DA-CNF/PU@Zn 2+ were 198.89 % and 104.77 % of the value of the control sample, respectively. This performance significantly surpasses that of previously reported self-healing polydimethylsiloxane-based materials. In the EMI shielding tests for Internet of Things applications, the conductive composite film fabricated with DA-CNF/PU@Zn 2+ and silver nanowires (AgNWs) effectively addresses the issues of resource waste and device stability. These findings offer a new strategy for designing high-performance self-healing composite materials with significant potential for applications in electronics, aerospace, automotive and wearable devices.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with their ultrahigh specific surface area, uniformly distributed pores, and tunable structures, are promising candidates for next-generation active electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their application is hindered by poor cycling stability due to structural collapse during charge-discharge cycles. To address this issue, we developed an alloy and multi-solvent thermal method strategy to synthesize Co/Zn bimetallic MOFs based on Naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid (NTCA). The resulting petal-like Co/Zn-NTCA MOF demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance. The incorporation of zinc ions not only significantly enhances cycling stability but also markedly increases the specific capacity of the anode material. At a current density of 200 mA·g –1 , the Co/Zn (2:1)-NTCA MOF demonstrated an impressive reversible capacity of 956 mA·h g –1 after 150 cycles. Even after 500 cycles, the specific capacity of the electrode remained high, with a value of 438 mA·h g –1 at a current density of 1000 A·g –1 .

The precise detection of metal ions is crucial in food safety, biomedical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. Although traditional “on-off” fluorescence probes are frequently utilized, their anti-interference capability remains a limitation. This study synthesized three new copper-based fluorescent probes: PTA, PTP, and PTD. Among them, PTD exhibited unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. PTD's remarkable selectivity for Zn 2+ was due to the formation of Zn 2+ -induced J-aggregates, which resulted in a concentration-dependent fluorescence redshift from green to yellow and then to red. Additionally, PTD demonstrated a rapid and sensitive response to Cu 2+ , and it was successfully integrated into a smartphone-based platform for the semi-quantitative detection of Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ in real food samples. The effectiveness in biological applications was also validated through live-cell imaging tests. This work contributes to the creation of highly selective and interference-resistant ratiometric fluorescence sensors by leveraging the special process of target metal ion-induced J-aggregate production in AIE-based probes.

To enhance the solubility and stability of curcumin, a novel double-crosslinked antimicrobial hydrogels OHA/GEL/CUR-Zn(II) was prepared. Curcumin, as a ligand, was complexed with Zn 2+ to form a stable complex (CUR-Zn(II)), which was grafted to the hydrogel formed by oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA) and gelatin (GEL) through Schiff base reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis was employed to determine the formation of Schiff base (C N) between OHA with GEL, as well as the ester bond between OHA with CUR-Zn(II). X-ray diffraction results showed the presence of amorphous peaks in the composite film. The change in crystal structure was probably due to the formation of new hydrogen bonding or chemical bonding between CUR-Zn(II) and OHA/GEL. The incorporation of CUR-Zn(II) complexes into a hydrogel matrix resulted in a significant enhancement of tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break, accompanied by a reduction in water vapor transmission rate. Meanwhile, the hydrogel achieved a bactericidal rate of over 99 % against the predominant spoilage bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in chilled chicken meat, extending the shelf life of the chilled chicken meat to over 8 days. Overall, the composite hydrogel enhanced the stability of curcumin by chelating it with Zn 2+ and increased its solubility by grafting it onto OHA and GEL cross-linked hydrogels, demonstrating significant application potential in food packaging.

Polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) have much application potential for metal ion separation. However, its separation selectivity highly depends on the extractant, and new efficient extractants are difficult to develop. This work proposes another approach, i.e., adding a complexing retardant to enhance the selectivity. The impurity ion (e.g., Cu 2+ ) was retarded in the feed solution by the complexing retardant (e.g., citric acid), while the target ion (e.g., Zn 2+ ) was transported across PIM. To reveal the enhancement mechanism, a mass transfer mathematical model was established. Contrast experiments proved that the complexing retardant can significantly enhance the overall separation coefficient β overall, exp . The β overall, exp of a conventional PIM system was 61.80, while β overall, exp increased to 853.45 after the retardant was added. The effects of retardant concentration, initial pH of feed solution, membrane thickness, extractant dosage, and plasticizer dosage on the retardant-enhanced PIM system were investigated. Model calculation results agreed well with the experimental data. The maximal β overall, exp 17525.68 was obtained at the optimal separation conditions of [CA] f,0 = 0.02 M, pH f ,0 = 4.5, [H 2 SO 4 ] s ,0 = 0.5 M, and the optimal composition of the PIM casting solution, i.e., PVC : P507: DBP: THF = 0.125 g: 0.188 mL: 0.032 mL: 10 mL. Further studies indicated that the retardant mechanism was reflected in the difference increase of interfacial partition coefficients P Zn 2 + , f and P Cu 2 + , f . Finally, the optimization strategies of the separation effects for the retardant-enhanced PIM system are discussed in depth based on the simulated calculation.

The application of lead-free dielectric ceramics for energy storage has received extensive attention because of their remarkable potential as pulse capacitors in power electronic devices. The current study developed a strategy for improving the energy storage performance of (K 0.5 Na 0.5 )NbO 3 (KNN)-based ceramics by incorporating Bi(Zn 2/3 Nb 1/3 )O 3 to reduce grain size, increase dielectric breakdown strength, and enhance ferroelectric relaxation degree. The resulting 0.87KNN–0.13BZN ceramics exhibited a high energy density (7.4 J/cm 3 ) and moderate energy efficiency (74%) at an ultrahigh electric field (750 kV/cm) as well as excellent optical properties. Therefore, the 0.87KNN–0.13BZN ceramic is a promising candidate for pulse capacitors, providing a feasible approach for the development of new lead-free energy storage materials.

The corrosion of zinc anodes, hydrogen evolution reaction, dendrite growth, and by-product formation are major obstacles to the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. In the electrolyte system, free water molecules that do not participate in ion hydration can disrupt solution stability, thereby becoming a major factor causing electrochemical barriers. To mitigate the adverse effects of free water molecules on AZIBs, this study utilized urea-intercalated montmorillonite as a raw material to prepare a novel clay-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte, based on the unique layered structure, negatively charged sheets, and strong ion exchange capacity of montmorillonite. This electrolyte effectively reduced the free water content and water activity in the system, thereby inhibiting corrosion and HER. Additionally, the intercalation of urea widened the interlayer spacing of montmorillonite, enhancing the attraction of Zn 2+ to construct interlayer cation channels. Meanwhile, the unique electric field structure on its surface determined the ion-selective transport characteristics, and the Zn 2+ transfer number of this clay-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte reached 0.82. Furthermore, the clay-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte promoted uniform deposition of Zn 2+ on the Zn anode surface, inhibiting dendrite growth and by-product formation. When this electrolyte was applied to a Zn//MnO₂ full cell at a current density of 300 mA g −1 , the battery could stably cycle for 1000 cycles, with the discharge specific capacity remaining at 193.2 mAh g −1 after cycling, a capacity retention rate of approximately 86.6%, and a stable CE close to 100%, demonstrating excellent capacity performance and cycle stability.

The prevention and control of rice pests and diseases are critical to crop quality. Traditional approaches rely heavily on high-concentration pesticides and antibacterial agents, imposing severe environmental burdens. Based on the coordination between tannic acid (TA) and unsaturated Zn2+ on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), we innovatively fabricated a antibacterial seed coating TA/ZIF-8@SA (TZS) loaded with thiamethoxam (TMX). The dense Zn2+-TA gating network and ZIF-8 double-layer structure enable precise and controllable TMX release, reducing pesticide-induced environmental pollution. This coating extends TMX release by over 15 times relative to commercial formulations. In pot experiments, TMX-TZS exerted persistent control against rice planthoppers with 73.54% control efficacy at 30 days, far exceeding 31% for pure TMX. It also achieved a germination rate of 75.43 ± 6.67% in Fusarium moniliforme-infected soil, demonstrating strong antifungal activity. Therefore, TMX-TZS integrates insecticidal and antibacterial functions to strengthen crop defense, realizing the dual control of rice diseases and pests.
