Z-scheme photocatalytic heterojunction is considered as an effective strategy to promote the photogenerated electron-hole separation for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen precipitation from splitting water significantly. Herein, a novel Z-scheme 2D-ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP heterojunction is successfully prepared by coupling NiCoP derived from ZIF-67 through phosphating treatment with 2D-ZnIn 2 S 4 lamellae via a facile hydrothermal method . The Z-scheme heterostructure of ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP could suppress the recombination-rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and enhance the visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production . As a result, the hydrogen production rate of 2D-ZnIn 2 S 4 /NiCoP (10 wt% ZnIn 2 S 4 ) increase to 5098.12 μmol g −1 h −1 significantly with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 5.24% at 420 nm, which is 3.07 times than that of bare ZnIn 2 S 4 . The enhancement of photocatalytic performance is attributed to the following issues: 2D-ZnIn 2 S 4 could avoid the agglomeration of tiny ZnIn 2 S 4 , exposing more active sites and shortening the transmission distance of photogenerated carries; the formation of Z-scheme heterostructure could promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs; the unique hollow structure of NiCoP derived from ZIF-67 could inhibit the recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole. Overall, this work could provide a new idea for designing and preparing of visible-light-driven photocatalysts with high efficiency for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Photocatalytic removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) based on semiconductor is important under visible light for environment and energy. Herein, a visible light-responsive heterojunction composed of molybdenum disulfide and zinc indium sulfide was synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method to ensure full contact between the two components to efficiently improve the Cr(VI) reduction. The MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composites build heterojunctions between MoS 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 to inhibit recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons and provide the reaction sites to trap photogenerated electrons to participate in the reduction of Cr(VI). The highly efficient reduction of Cr(VI) was obtained by adjusting the proportion of molybdenum disulfide. It demonstrates that the 0.5 wt% MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite microstructures show the highest degradation rate of 0.1989 s −1 under visible light irradiation, 1.7 times of bare ZnIn 2 S 4 . Moreover, the MoS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 showed excellent stability during photocatalytic recyclable processes. This work encourages researchers to remove Cr(VI) by constructing effective heterojunction structures.

In this paper, the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite was synthesized by a two-stage hydrothermal method. The microstructure, surface, and optical properties of the composite were thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic analysis. The removal capacity of Cr(VI) was optimized by using ZnIn 2 S 4 loaded in the composite. Meanwhile, the optimal pH environment for the reduction of Cr(VI) was determined to be about pH 3, and the reduction efficiency could reach more than 99% within 60 min. Further, the results of UV-Vis absorption analysis indicated the high and wide range of light absorption by composite compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 . Therefore, the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the composite could be attributed to the well-matched energy band structure between g-C 3 N 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , which apparently promoted the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the composite showed good stability in the visible light catalytic reaction, and the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic activity of Cr(VI) reduction by the composite was proposed.

The high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limited the wide application of ternary metal sulfides with appropriate energy band structure and excellent light absorption properties. In this article, the microflower-like MgIn 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction was constructed to overcome the above faults. Various characterizations revealed that the loading of MgIn 2 S 4 provided more reactive sites for the photocatalytic reaction, and induced the generation of more photogenerated charge. Meanwhile, the heterostructure forming between MgIn 2 S 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 significantly reduced the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers. For the 30% MgIn 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 (MZ-30) composite, the removal efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) reached 96.21% under the optimal experimental conditions. Surprisingly, it still maintained high removal efficiencies both acidic and alkaline conditions. MgIn 2 S 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite had the advantages like short removal time, wide pH application range, and could efficiently degrade a variety of antibiotics at the same time. Mass spectrometry analysis suggested that TCH molecules eventually turned into carbon dioxide and water by the ring-opening and functional group cracking reactions. Finally, the possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of TCH was proposed by combining the band position analysis and active species trapping test.

In this work, a series of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets encapsulated NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) heterostructures (NM-125(Ti)@ZIS) have been rationally designed and established through a facile oil bath method. The photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and H 2 evolution performance on NM-125(Ti)@ZIS were elaborately modulated by adjusting the mass ratio of two components, introducing S vacancy and loading cocatalysts. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimized NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructure with mass ratio 3:1 of NM-125(Ti) to ZIS has an excellent Cr(VI) reduction performance in neutral solution, giving 98% reduction efficiency within 60 min. Moreover, the NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructure, following the introduction of sulfur vacancies and the incorporation of Pt nanoclusters , demonstrates an optimal visible light (λ > 420 nm) hydrogen evolution rate of 4.708 mmol/g/h, which is 5.82 times greater than that of pristine ZIS. A thorough investigation of the microstructures and photoelectrochemical properties of the NM-125(Ti)@ZIS heterostructures reveals that the intimate contact interface, sulfur vacancy, and Pt nanocluster serve to effectively enhance charge separation efficiency, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Further analysis on the charges behavior at the interface verifies that a novel Z-scheme heterojunction has been constructed between ZnIn 2 S 4 and NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti).

Occurrence of brominated flame retardants especially tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water bodies poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems . Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a versatile technology that can efficiently degrade organic contaminants . However, existing studies on photocatalytic degradation of TBBPA are all achieved under intense light irradiation and high initial concentrations of TBBPA, which are far from real environmental conditions and not conducive to practical application. In this study, series of Z-scheme heterojunctions of WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts were prepared and used for the high-efficiency photocatalytic degradation of TBBPA at lower light irradiation intensity (100 W) and lower TBBPA concentration (5.4 mg/L). Among them, WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -3 (molar ratio of 1:3) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity due to the formation of Z-Scheme heterojunction which effectively facilitated the separation of photogenerated charges and endowed WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 -3 higher redox ability. Thus, under light illumination, 91.6% degradation of TBBPA was achieved at an initial pH of 8.0 within 150 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.01572 min −1 . Electron spin resonance spectroscopy and radical scavenger experiments confirmed that ·O 2 − radicals were the primary reactive oxygen species driving the TBBPA degradation. By applying LC-MS/MS, the degradation products were identified and possible degradation pathways were proposed. Finally, potential toxicity for PBBPA and generated intermediates were evaluated using luminescent bacteria, which revealed the toxicity of PBBPA was reduced effectively during the photocatalytic degradation process. Overall, the Z-scheme WO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst provides a promising way for the application of photocatalytic technology in actual wastewater treatment .

Developing noble-metal-free dual-metal single-atom catalysts with rich active accessible sites and excellent catalytic activity is very meaningful and challenging, especially for photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction, which can significantly reduce the cost of photocatalytic technology application while reducing the use of noble metals. Herein, a novel noble-metal-free dual CuNi single-atom modified ZnIn 2 S 4 (CuNi SA -ZIS) photocatalyst with high hydrogen production performance were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method. The ZnIn 2 S 4 with a spherical nanoflower structure is composed of ultrathin nanosheets, and AC HDDAF-STEM results shows that CuNi bimetallic particles are uniformly distributed on the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets and exhibit atomic level dispersion, forming dual-metal single-atom structure. The optimized 1 wt% CuNi SA -ZIS photocatalyst with the Cu/Ni ratio of 1:1 shows the optimum H 2 evolution performance with a rate of up to 7844.7 μmol· g −1 · h −1 using triethanolamine as a sacrificial reagent, which is significantly improved compared to pristine ZIS, Cu-ZIS and Ni-ZIS samples under simulated sunlight. Electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization results demonstrated that the improved photocatalytic activity of CuNi SA -ZIS was mainly due to the addition of the dual CuNi single atoms with a synergistic effect served as a co-catalyst for ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts, providing efficient active sites for hydrogen evolution while preventing the fast recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. This study provides a valuable source of ideas for the design of effective noble-metal-free dual-metal single-atom catalysts.

The simultaneous utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes in one cooperative photoredox system for the dehydrocoupling of thiols into value-added disulfides and clean hydrogen (H 2 ) fuel meets the development criteria of green chemistry. Herein, we report the synthesis and application of cocatalyst PdS decorated ZnIn 2 S 4 (PdS-ZIS) composites for photocatalytic coupling of thiols into disulfides and H 2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The superior photocatalytic performance over PdS-ZIS composites compared with blank ZIS is attributed to the function of PdS as oxidation cocatalyst, which dramatically promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers due to its excellent hole trapping ability. In-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra reveal the dynamic variation of reactants on the catalyst surface. Electron paramagnetic resonance technology confirms that sulfur-centered radicals are the key reaction intermediates in this coupling process. Moreover, the application of PdS-ZIS composites to the dehydrocoupling of various thiols with different substituent groups into the corresponding S–S coupling products has been demonstrated to be practicable. This work is expected to offer insights into the rational design of cocatalyst-decorated semiconductor photocatalysts with efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes for the co-production of high-value chemicals and clean H 2 energy in a cooperative photoredox catalysis process.

Boosting the photoinduced cathodic protection (CP) for metals in NaCl solution is crucial for achieving the application of photoelectrochemical conversion in marine corrosion protection. An environmentally friendly three-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 nanoflowerbush (NFB) photoelectrode was constructed with sufficient interfacial incorporation based on the ultrafine branched TiO 2 nanobush substrate via a facile in situ hydrothermal method . This ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 NFB nanoheterojunction composite behaves excellent photoinduced CP performance for metallic materials. This is owing to the optimized construction of photoelectrode with relatively negative band potential, wide solar spectrum response, effective generation and collection of photoinduced electrons. The morphology, distribution and performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 vary with different substrates. The pure ZnIn 2 S 4 powder is nanoflower sphere composed of a lot of thin petals; when ZnIn 2 S 4 grow onto the FTO glass, the ZnIn 2 S 4 petals are distributed vertically on the two-dimensional structure; when ZnIn 2 S 4 grow on the three-dimensional ultrafine branched TiO 2 nanobush substrate, a ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 NFB architecture with ultrafine TiO 2 branchlet cores are formed. This ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 NFB photoelectrode can achieve efficient photoinduced CP performance for pure copper and low alloy steels with different negative self-corrosion potentials, such as Cu (−0.18 V), E40 (−0.45 V), Q345 (−0.55 V) and Q235 carbon steel (−0.65 V) under simulated sunlight irradiation in NaCl solution without additional hole scavengers, and the photoinduced CP current densities reach as high as 170, 72, 63 and 44 μA cm −2 , respectively. The high-efficiency photoinduced CP performance is closely related to the band structure gradient matching between the TiO 2 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , prompting both the widened absorption of solar spectrum and high-efficiency transfer of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Importantly, the negative band potential of ZnIn 2 S 4 endues a lower surface work function which benefits the electron transport to the under-protected metallic materials to achieve photoinduced CP. This photoelectrode exhibits huge photoinduced CP application potential in marine environments.

At present, inefficient charge separation is considered to be one of the most important factors, limiting the photocatalytic hydrogen production. To solve this problem, herein, hierarchical Cu7S4/ZnIn2S4 decorated with black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) was rationally designed and its photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was investigated under visible light. The structural characterization proved the wrapped morphology of ZnIn2S4 grown on the Cu7S4 nanocrystals and BPQDs were uniformly dispersed on the surface of ZnIn2S4. Moreover, the close hierarchical structure of Cu7S4 with ZnIn2S4 and carrier separation facilitator of BPQDs were synergistically beneficial for boosting charge separation and transfer. The hydrogen production results showed that the ternary BPQDs@10% Cu7S4/ZnIn2S4 yielded the highest H2 evolution rate of 885 μmol g−1 h−1, about 6.8 times higher than that of the pristine ZnIn2S4, indicating its promising application in hydrogen production. In addition, the possible working mechanism was deeply explored using photo-electrochemistry, and the results illustrated that the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution can be attributed to the efficient charge separation caused by the formation of the hierarchical interface structure and increased carrier transfer efficiency of BPQDs. This study demonstrates that the regulation of interfacial charge transfer can positively facilitate photocatalytic activity and the ternary BPQDs@10% Cu7S4/ZnIn2S4 can be employed as an efficient candidate for hydrogen production.

A series of RGO/La-ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method with different amount of RGO (0 wt%, 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt%, 5.0 wt%) and La (0 wt%, 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt%, 5.0 wt%) and characterized by various analysis techniques, such as XRD , Raman, SEM, UV–Vis, TEM, BET and PL. The photocatalytic H 2 evolution activities have also been evaluated under visible-light irradiation. The H 2 production activity of RGO/La-ZnIn 2 S 4 was influenced by both La and RGO significantly. The activity reached the best when the amounts of La and RGO were both 1.0 wt%. The hydrogen production rate of 1.0Pt/1.0RGO/1.0La-ZnIn 2 S 4 was 2255 μmol g −1 h −1 and the apparent quantum yield and the energy conversion efficiency were 29.45% and 18.79% at 420 nm respectively. The activity was related to the BET surface area, the pore microstructure and the synergistic effect of RGO and La. On the basis of the characterization of the catalysts, the synergistic effect of RGO and La on the photocatalytic activity of RGO/La-ZnIn 2 S 4 was discussed in detail.

Ethylene glycol (EG) is extensively utilized as anti-freezer and deicer, which would bring potential health risk under unintentional exposures especially with hazardous inhalation of EG aerosols or vapors. In this study, ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS)/WO 3 core-shell nanofibrous heterostructure loaded with optimized Au nanoparticles (NPs) was prepared for superiorly sensitive and selective EG gas sensing. The ternary Au/ZIS/WO 3 heterostructures exhibited an excellent response ( Ra/Rg =98.92) to 50 ppm EG, demonstrating an enhancement of 3.5 times compared to the binary ZIS/WO 3 , and a substantial improvement of 59.5 and 24.1 times compared to pure WO 3 and ZIS, respectively. The ternary Au/ZIS/WO 3 heterostructures also possessed an extremely low detection limit of 6 ppb, as well as excellent selectivity , repeatability, and long-term stability. This exceptional gas sensing performance can be attributed to its distinctive ternary Au/ZIS/WO 3 heterostructures with high specific surface areas . This unique structure not only facilitate the activation of abundant active oxygen species, but also promote the spillover effect of Au and enhance effective electronic distribution, thereby providing more EG adsorption sites, which was confirmed by density functional theory calculation. The synergistic effect arising from the metal-semiconductor interface and the core-shell heterostructure presents a novel avenue for advancing high-performance sensor technologies.
