Efficient formation of ZIF-8 promoted by DBU for the preparation of ZnO and Ce/ZnO nanomaterials

Tingting Chen,Yingjie Xu,Bin Chen,Huiquan Xiao

In this work, the efficient preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) from Zn 2+ and 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) promoted by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) was presented. The mechanism obtained from NMR, MS, DFT calculations, and conductivity shows that [DBUH][2-MI] ionic liquid formed in-situ from proton transfer between DBU and 2-MI can ionize 2-MI to [2-MI] - and form electrostatic interaction between Zn 2+ and [2-MI] - , resulting in the efficient self-assembly of Zn 2+ and 2-MI to form ZIF-8. Moreover, the effect of the amount of DBU on ZIF-8 indicates that too much DBU will cause excessive deprotonation of 2-MI, leading to agglomerate of ZIF-8. Accordingly, the optimal ratio to form ZIF-8 is n(DBU): n(2-MI): n(Zn 2+ ) = 2: 25: 1.25, which is also employed to prepare cerium-containing ZIF-8. Moreover, ZnO and Ce/ZnO nanomaterials are prepared by using ZIF-8 and cerium-containing ZIF-8 as precursors respectively, and their structure and morphology are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. Interestingly, Ce content in Ce/ZnO obtained by EDS spectrum is basically consistent with the actual doping amount, indicating that DBU can effectively control the doping of Ce in ZIF-8. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation ability of ZnO and Ce/ZnO for Rhodamine B under visible light and sunlight is investigated in detail.

Surface Plane Effect of ZnO on the Catalytic Performance of Au/ZnO for the CO Oxidation Reaction

Wei Liu,Hongpeng Liu,Yatian Liu,Zejian Dong,Langli Luo

In heterogeneous catalysis, specific surface planes of metals and/or supports have a prominent effect on the catalytic processes, i.e., adsorption, dissociation of reactants, and electron transfer behaviors. In addition, surface planes of oxide supports have a direct impact on the shape and dispersion of metal particles through a metal–support interaction. Herein, we synthesized ZnO nanoplates (p-ZnO) exposing mostly polar surfaces and ZnO nanorods (r-ZnO) exposing non-polar surfaces and used them as supports to prepare Au/ZnO catalysts. Then, the surface plane effect of ZnO was demonstrated by employing the CO oxidation reaction. We found that the activity of Au/p-ZnO is superior to that of Au/r-ZnO, which is due to more O2 activation sites on polar surfaces than on non-polar surfaces. Furthermore, Au can activate both polar and non-polar surfaces of ZnO by creating more oxygen vacancies for O2 activation. This study highlights the effects of different surface planes of oxides in catalytic reactions and provides new insights for the development of highly active metal-oxide catalysts.

Enhanced voltage gradient and energy absorption capability in ZnO varistor ceramics by using nano-sized ZnO powders

Wenfeng Liu,Lei Zhang,Fanyi Kong,Kangning Wu,Shengtao Li,Jianying Li

In the present study, both enhanced voltage gradient of 803 V/mm and superior energy absorption capability of 400 J/cm 3 were achieved in ZnO varistors prepared by nano-sized raw powders. Further analysis indicated that such improvement could be ascribed to the refined micromorphology. As shown by SEM pictures, the average grain size was dramatically decreased by the nano-sized powders, which contributed to the enhanced voltage gradient. Meanwhile, the homogeneous grain size distribution resulted in the improved energy absorption capability. The improved varistors in the present study showed high potential for ultra-high voltage applications. In addition, we proposed an effective approach to quantitatively evaluate the grain size distribution, which is the key parameter for the electrical properties of the varistors. It provided a guideline for further modifications on wide range of electronic ceramics .

Cu/ZnO/SiO2 catalyst synthesized by reduction of ZnO-modified copper phyllosilicate for dimethyl ether steam reforming

Xinlei Wang,Kui Ma,Lihong Guo,Ye Tian,Qingpeng Cheng,Xueqin Bai,Jingjing Huang,Tong Ding,Xingang Li

Herein, we reduced the ZnO-modified copper phyllosilicate to synthesize a series of Cu/ZnO/SiO 2 catalysts ( x CuZn/SiO 2 ) which were mixed with γ-Al 2 O 3 for dimethyl ether steam reforming (DME SR). The structure and the formation of copper phyllosilicate were systematically characterized by nitrogen adsorption, XRD and IR. The novel synthetic route led to the remarkably high dispersion of copper species and adjustable Cu 0 /Cu + ratio on the catalyst surface, resulting in the superior catalytic performance for DME SR. The amount of Cu 0 and Cu + sites on the catalyst surface was dramatically affected by ZnO loading, and the turnover frequency results indicated that the 4CuZn/SiO 2 catalyst (Cu/Zn   =   4) with the Cu 0 /Cu + ratio of 1 showed the highest catalytic performance. The XPS, H 2 -TPR and TEM results revealed the existence of strong interaction between Cu species and ZnO on the reduced 4CuZn/SiO 2 catalyst, which suppressed the reverse water-gas reaction and prevented the sintering of copper.

In-situ grown nanostructured ZnO via a green approach and gas sensing properties of polypyrrole/ZnO nanohybrids

Yang Li,Mingfei Jiao,Mujie Yang

ZnO nanoparticles or nanosheets have been in-situ grown on the substrate via a facile green approach featured with the hydrothermal treatment of electrospun nanofibers comprising polyvinyl alcohol and zinc acetate. The nanohybrids of ZnO with polypyrrole (PPy) were fabricated by the vapor phase polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of as-prepared nanostructured ZnO. The resulting nanohybrids were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, field emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurements. Moreover, the electrical responses of the nanohybrids to NH 3 have been examined at room temperature. It was found that the nanohybrids revealed much higher response magnitude than either of the constituent component. Additionally, the morphology of ZnO affected the response magnitude of PPy/ZnO nanohybrids. The hybrids of ZnO nanosheets with PPy showed wide sensing range (0.5–200   ppm), very high response magnitude (relative resistance change of ∼20% towards 0.5   ppm of NH 3 ), good repeatability and selectivity. Attempts have been made to explore the gas sensing mechanism of the PPy/ZnO nanohybrids.

In Situ-Derived N-Doped ZnO from ZIF-8 for Enhanced Ethanol Sensing in ZnO/MEMS Devices

Meihua Liang,Yong Yan,Jiaxuan Yang,Xiaodong Liu,Rongrong Jia,Yuanyuan Ge,Zhili Li,Lei Huang

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors have numerous advantages such as compact size, low power consumption, ease of integration, etc., while encountering challenges in sensitivity and high resistance because of their low sintering temperature. This work utilizes the in situ growth of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) followed by its conversion to N-doped ZnO. The results obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the in situ derivation of ZIF-8 facilitates the adhesion of ZnO particles, forming an island-like structure and significantly reducing the interfaces between these particles. Furthermore, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirm the conversion of ZIF-8 to ZnO, the successful incorporation of N atoms into the ZnO lattice, and the creation of more oxygen vacancies. The ZIF-8-derived N-doped ZnO/MEMS sensor (ZIF (3)-ZnO/MEMS) exhibits remarkable gas sensitivity for ethanol detection. At an operating temperature of 290 °C, it delivers a substantial response value of 80 towards 25 ppm ethanol, a 13-fold enhancement compared with pristine ZnO/MEMS sensors. The sensor also exhibits an ultra-low theoretical detection limit of 11.5 ppb to ethanol, showcasing its excellent selectivity. The enhanced performance is attributed to the incorporation of N-doped ZnO, which generates abundant oxygen vacancies on the sensor’s surface, leading to enhanced interaction with ethanol molecules. Additionally, a substantial two-order-of-magnitude decrease in the resistance of the gas-sensitive film is observed. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the design and fabrication strategies applicable to high-performance MEMS gas sensors in a broader range of gas sensing.

Polarity-induced ZnO nanostructure to construct flexible ZnO/rGO@PET fabric with high-efficiency microwave absorption property

Ni Xiaoqi,Fu Wenwen,Wang Hui-Ya,Xu Xiangyang,Zhu Yaofeng

The growing demand for intelligent wearable devices has put forward new challenges for flexible and high-performance microwave-absorbing materials. Traditional powder-based electromagnetic wave absorbing materials are restricted by their rigidity and bulkiness, making them unsuitable for intelligent, flexible wearable devices. Herein, flexible ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabrics were successfully fabricated by choosing polyester knitted fabric as an elastic scaffold and then adhering ZnO/rGO through impregnation and hydrothermal treatment process. The morphology of ZnO presents needle, flake, and coralline-clustered structures, which are regulated by controlling the growth rate of ZnO seeds along the c-axis in a strong polar ion environment. Among them, the flake-like ZnO synthesized in a 0.050 mol/L growth solution exhibits a looser porous structure, which would significantly enhance impedance matching and multiple internal reflections. Furthermore, flake-like ZnO has a higher electric dipole moment, which can provide stronger dipole polarization and interface polarization. Notably, the ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabric with flake-like ZnO achieves the optimal minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of -70.76 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.20 GHz (8.2–12.4 GHz). Furthermore, adjusting the stacking sequence of functional fabric layers could effectively control the electromagnetic parameters and corresponding microwave absorption performance, which is well maintained after repeated washings. This work provides a novel strategy for designing next-generation tunable electromagnetic textiles.

Electrochemistry of ZnO@reduced graphene oxides

Junxing Hao,Liudi Ji,Kangbing Wu,Nianjun Yang

To explore electrochemistry of the composites of ZnO and reduced graphene oxides (rGO), graphene oxide (GO) was in-situ reduced with Zn powders. The morphology and micro-structure of synthesized ZnO@rGO composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , and atomic force microscope . Energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to clarify the chemical composition of ZnO@rGO composites. Electrochemical properties of ZnO@rGO composites were studied using cyclic voltammetry and impedance, revealing a large surface area and many active sites. Accordingly, electrochemical sensing of a neutral organic dye Sudan I and a charged metal ion Pb 2+ was achieved on ZnO@rGO composites. The strategy of in-situ reduction of GO with Zn powders thus owns great application prospects in constructing a universal and sensitive electrochemical sensing platform.

One-pot synthesis of sandwich-structured ZnO/CsPbX3/ZnO quantum dots with continuously tunable emission for white LEDs

Yi Zhu,Feng Tong,Hui Si,Liji Su,Wenguang Dai,Shu Nie,Zheng Chen,Sheng Huang,Xiuquan Gu

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have shown exceptional optoelectronic properties for displays, but their practical application is hindered by low efficiency and poor stability stemming from high defect density. To address this, a one-pot synthesis has been developed, using ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) as a structure-directing agent to construct a unique sandwich architecture. These QDs consist of a ZnO core, an epitaxially grown CsPbX 3 crystalline domain, and an outer ZnO shell. Theoretical calculations reveal that ZnO incorporation significantly enhances QD stability by raising the formation energy and suppressing defect generation. Consequently, Attributed to effective defect passivation and interfacial stabilization by the ZnO sandwich structure, the PQDs exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 95%, compared to ~52% for the pristine counterparts. More importantly, the PQD-based composite films exhibit high stability under combined thermal, aqueous, and optical stresses, retaining over 70% of their initial PL intensity, which is markedly higher than that of <30% retained by the control samples. Moreover, continuously tunable emission from 518 to 690 nm was realized by adjusting the halide composition. A high-performance white LED was fabricated by integrating the QD composite film with a blue LED chip, achieving a color gamut covering 134% NTSC and 100% Rec. 2020. This work provides a solution through a one-pot synthesized sandwich structure that concurrently enhances both the efficiency and stability of PQDs, paving the way for future displays.

Optical properties and photocatalytic activities of spherical ZnO and flower-like ZnO structures synthesized by facile hydrothermal method

Yongling Fang,Zhongyu Li,Song Xu,Dandan Han,Dayong Lu

Spherical ZnO and flower-like ZnO were prepared by facile hydrothermal method at 180   °C and 160   °C, respectively. The as-prepared samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) spectra. The optical properties of as-prepared sample, such as photoluminescence (PL) spectra and Raman spectra were studied. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared ZnO particles were investigated by degrading the methyl orange (MO) under UV light irradiation. The photocatalytic studies showed that the organic pollutants have been almost completely degraded and mineralized after irradiation of the UV light. These results indicated that the as-prepared ZnO particles exhibited good optical properties and high photocatalytic activities.

Effect of preparing method of ZnO powders on electrical arc erosion behavior of Ag/ZnO electrical contact material

Zhijun Wei,Lingjie Zhang,Hui Yang,Tao Shen,Lawson Chen

Two kinds of Ag/ZnO electrical contact materials were fabricated by powder metallurgy method. The electrical life testing was done to investigate the arc erosion behavior of the prepared contact materials. Their properties and morphologies were characterized and discussed in detail. Results showed that Ag/ZnO(c) with coprecipitated ZnO as the second phase had better mechanical and electrical properties compared with Ag/ZnO(a) with ZnO purchased from Aladdin Industrial, Inc. Besides, some typical morphologies, such as holes, Ag or ZnO enrichment zone, Ag skeletons and bubbling area, occurred on the surface of the contacts. Especially for Ag/ZnO(c), vertically aligned ZnO nanorod arrays were detected after the life testing without any other supporting equipment. The existence of a solid solution Zn1−x Ag x O and different energy generated during arcing process were possible reasons resulting in this phenomenon. A solid–vapor–solid mechanism was put forward to analyze the phenomenon mentioned above. These evidences could also offer some valuable information desired for reducing the splashing of Ag droplet under arcing.

Urchin-like ZnO-nanorod arrays templated growth of ordered hierarchical Ag/ZnO hybrid arrays for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Zhongbo Li,Lijun Zhang,Xuan He,Chen Bensong

Here, a universal strategy for the controllable synthesis of three dimensional (3D) hierarchical Ag/ZnO hybrid arrays based on the urchin-like ZnO-nanorod array template is presented. The urchin-like ZnO-nanorod arrays are first achieved by electrodepositing a high density of ZnO-nanorods onto the surface of highly hexagonally arranged arrays of polystyrene (PS) microspheres, and then Ag-nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are assembled onto the surface of each ZnO-nanorod via photochemical reaction, ion sputtering, galvanic cell reaction deposition and electrochemical deposition, forming the ordered hierarchical Ag/ZnO hybrid arrays. The urchin-like Ag/ZnO hybrid arrays with well-ordered hierarchical morphology and high density 'hot spots' located in the sub-10 nm gaps between neighboring Ag-NPs on both the same ZnO-nanorod and neighboring ZnO-nanorods can be directly utilized as hybrid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high SERS activity. This work provides a strategy for the rational assembly of well-ordered hierarchical noble metal/semiconductor hybrid arrays, which may open up many opportunities in areas such as catalysis, SERS, and biosensing.
