Amino-functionalized CdSe/ZnS quantum dot-based lateral flow immunoassay for sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1

Jieying Li,Mao Mao,Feng Wu,Qiang Li,Luyao Wei,Lan Ma

In this study, highly fluorescent amino-functionalized CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (CdSe/ZnS QDs) coated with amphiphilic N-alkylated poly(ethyleneimine) have been synthesized and applied as fluorescent probes in lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) strips for on-site determination of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The amino-functionalized QDs were used to combine with anti-AFB1 via thiol-maleimide conjugation and they effectively enhanced the detection sensitivity. The test strip had high sensitivity for AFB1 from 0.001 ng mL−1 to 10 ng mL−1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.005 ng mL−1, which was much lower than the allowable concentration by the European Commission (EC) (2.0 μg kg−1) and FDA (20 μg kg−1). The IC50 value was calculated to be 0.025 ng mL−1. The reproducibility and recovery tests showed that the quantitative results were accurate, and it could be used for rapid on-site detection of AFB1 in cereal products.

Dual-Emissive and Color-Tunable Mn-Doped InP/ZnS Quantum Dots via a Growth-Doping Method

Zhang Guilin,Mei Shiliang,Wei Xian,Wei Chang,Yang Wu,Zhu Jiatao,Zhang Wanglu,Guo Ruiqian

In this letter, dual-emissive and color-tunable Mn-doped InP/ZnS quantum dots (Mn:InP/ZnS QDs) with the absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) up to 78% were successfully synthesized via a growth-doping method. The dual emission of Mn:InP/ZnS QDs is composed of intrinsic emission and Mn-doped emission, which can be tuned by different Mn/In ratios. With the increase of Mn dopant concentration, the intrinsic emission shows a red shift from 485 to 524 nm. The new class of dual-emissive QDs provides potential for future application in white LED.

Aqueous synthesis of L-cysteine and mercaptopropionic acid co-capped ZnS quantum dots with dual emissions

Yingkun Ren,Yongbo Wang,Min Yang,Enzhou Liu,Xiaoyun Hu,Xu Zhang,Jun Fan

In this paper, L-cysteine (L-cys) and mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) co-capped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with dual emissions have been successfully synthesized by a one-pot aqueous-phase synthesis method. The intensities of the dual emissions could be controlled by regulating the molar ratio of L-cys to MPA, and the fluorescence color also turned from blue to yellow accordingly. The relationship between the ligands and fluorescence was investigated and the results indicated that L-cys could cause two emissions and MPA improved the emission intensity. In addition, the L-cys-MPA co-capped ZnS QDs showed high photostability under UV irradiation. Therefore, the L-cys-MPA co-capped ZnS QDs, which show the dual emissions and tunable emission intensities, have great potentials for use in ratiometric fluorescence sensors and multicolor bioimaging.

The competition between template growth and catalytic growth of one-dimensional ZnS nanostructures: nanobelts or nanowires

Tingting You,Junli Wang,Hui Feng,Kangmin Chen,Weiling Fan,Chi Zhang,Runsheng Miao

Template growth and catalytic growth are two typical mechanisms for the solution-chemistry synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) II–VI semiconductor nanomaterials. Here, we systematically demonstrate the competition relationship between them by tuning the synthesis of 1D ZnS nanostructures in different chain-length primary alkyl-amines. The template growth, derived from the coordination effect of amines, produces ZnS nanobelts and will compete with the Ag2S-catalyzed mechanism as AgNO3 is added into these amines. In short-chain n-propylamine and n-butylamine the template growth is much stronger than the catalytic growth, leading to the morphology maintenance of ZnS nanobelts, whereas the latter replaces the former in long-chain n-octylamine and n-dodecylamine due to the decrease of coordination ability of amines, which yields ZnS nanowires instead of nanobelts. A balance of competition is built between these two mechanisms in middle-length n-hexylamine, producing a mixture of ZnS nanobelts and nanowires. The morphology and growth mechanism changes of ZnS nanostructures have been rationally investigated using various characterization techniques. Meanwhile, the optical properties of the products synthesized before and after adding AgNO3 are comparatively studied by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra.

Hierarchical architectures of ZnS–In2S3 solid solution onto TiO2 nanofibers with high visible-light photocatalytic activity

Chengbin Liu,Deshui Meng,Yue Li,Longlu Wang,Yutang Liu,Shenglian Luo

A unique hierarchical architecture of ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution nanostructures onto TiO 2 nanofibers (TiO 2 @ZnS–In 2 S 3 ) has been successfully fabricated by simple hydrothermal method. The ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution nanostructures exhibit a diversity of morphologies: nanosheet, nanorod and nanoparticle. The porous TiO 2 nanofiber templates effectively inhibit the aggregation growth of ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution. The formation of ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution is proved by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the intimate contact between TiO 2 nanofibers and ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution favors fast transfer of photogenerated electrons. The trinary TiO 2 @ZnS–In 2 S 3 heterostructures exhibit high adsorption capacity and visible light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye (RhB), remarkably superior to pure TiO 2 nanofibers or binary structures (ZnS/TiO 2 nanofibers, In 2 S 3 /TiO 2 nanofibers and ZnS–In 2 S 3 solid solution). Under visible light irradiation the RhB photocatalytic degradation rate over TiO 2 @ZnS–In 2 S 3 heterostructures is about 16.7, 12.5, 6.3, 5.9, and 2.2   times that over pure TiO 2 nanofibers, ZnS nanoparticles, In 2 S 3 /TiO 2 nanofibers, ZnS/TiO 2 nanofibers, and ZnS-In 2 S 3 solid solution, respectively. Furthermore, the TiO 2 @ZnS–In 2 S 3 heterostructures show highly stable recycling performance.

Inhibition of photocorrosion and photoactivity enhancement for ZnO via specific hollow ZnO core/ZnS shell structure

Linhui Yu,Wei Chen,Danzhen Li,Jubao Wang,Yu Shao,Miao He,Peng Wang,Xiuzhen Zheng

Hollow ZnO core/ZnS shell structure (ZnO/ZnS HCSS) has been successfully synthesized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach. It is found that such a ZnO/ZnS HCSS exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO and ZnS toward the liquid-phase degradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation. What is more noteworthy, it is also demonstrated that ZnO/ZnS HCSS photocatalyst overcomes the photocorrosion in comparison to pristine ZnO by mean of cycling tests toward MO. The detailed degradation process of MO over ZnO/ZnS HCSS is investigated by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method. And then, the roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the electron spin resonance and photocurrent test, the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application.

Heparin-mediated fluorescence anisotropy assay of antithrombin based on polyethyleneimine capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots

Miao Shao,He-Fang Wang

We presented a homogeneous heparin-mediated fluorescence anisotropy (FA) assay of antithrombin (AT) based on long-lived luminescent polyethyleneimine capped Mn-doped ZnS (PEI-Mn-ZnS) QDs. The PEI-Mn-ZnS QDs with long lifetime luminescence at 585 nm displayed a very low background of FA value, which was very helpful for FA assaying of large molecules. The medium heparin was crucial for AT determination, and different heparin amounts resulted in different linear range of detection and sensitivity. For example, the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.9 nM AT with a detection linear range from 8.6 nM to 21.5 nM was found when the heparin concentration was 75 μM. The proposed method also exhibited high selectivity over the coexisting or related proteins such as human serum albumin and thrombin.

An effective quaternary nano-sized Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt–PdS/ZnS visible-light photocatalyst for H2 production

Chunxiao Lu,Yang Chen,Yun Li,Chunhong Ma,Hongbo Zhang,Yuwei Guo,Jun Wang

A highly effective and stable up-conversion luminescence agent, Er3+:Y3Al5O12, was synthesized by sol–gel and calcination methods. Then, as a novel visible-light photocatalyst, Er3+:Y3Al5O12, Pt and PdS (as dual co-catalysts) decorated ZnS nano-sized composites, Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt–PdS/ZnS, were fabricated by deposition–precipitation and ultrasonic dispersion methods. All prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). UV-vis absorption and PL spectra of Er3+:Y3Al5O12 were also determined. The visible-light photocatalytic H2 production activity of the prepared Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt–PdS/ZnS was evaluated by using Na2S and Na2SO3 as sacrificial reagents in an aqueous solution under 300 W irradiation from a xenon lamp. In addition, some influential factors such as Er3+:Y3Al5O12 and ZnS mass ratio, catalyst amount, irradiation time and irradiation intensity on visible-light photocatalytic H2 production of Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt–PdS/ZnS were investigated in detail. It was found that Er3+:Y3Al5O12 can effectively improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity of ZnS. Particularly, Er3+:Y3Al5O12/Pt–PdS/ZnS with 0.13 wt% PdS and 0.3 wt% Pt and a 0.30 : 1.00 mass ratio shows the highest photocatalytic H2 production activity in the sulfide/sulfite (0.2 mol L−1 Na2S and 0.3 mol L−1 Na2SO3) aqueous solution as sacrificial reagents.

Scaling up the Aqueous Synthesis of Visible Light Emitting Multinary AgInS2/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots

Xiaojiao Kang,Lijian Huang,Yanchun Yang,Daocheng Pan

Approximately 3 g of water-soluble AgInS2/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (AIS/ZnS QDs) with a maximum photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 39.1% was synthesized in an aqueous solution of gelatin and thioglycolic acid (TGA). The composition of the AIS QDs could be readily adjusted by controlling the molar ratio of the starting Ag/In precursors in the reaction solution, which leads to a tunable emission ranging from 535 to 607 nm. The as-prepared core/shell QDs exhibit excellent photostability and water/buffer stability. More importantly, these cadmium-free hydrophilic AIS/ZnS core/shell QDs are biocompatible and can be directly utilized in cancer cell imaging.

Aminophenylboronic-Acid-Conjugated Polyacrylic Acid–Mn-Doped ZnS Quantum Dot for Highly Sensitive Discrimination of Glycoproteins

Li-Jia Sang,He-Fang Wang

Discrimination of glycoproteins with different glycans is a significant but difficult issue. We presented here a new strategy for strengthening the discrimination of glycoproteins by introducing a new signaling channel, fluorescence polarization (FP), into a “single probe with three signaling channels” sensor array. The single probe was aminophenylboronic-acid-conjugated poly(acrylic acid)–Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots, and the three signaling channels were FP, room temperature phosphorescence and light scattering. Ten glycoproteins, including ovalbumin, fibrinogen, transferrin, horseradish peroxidase, vascular endothelial growth factor, immunoglobulin G, avidin, hyaluronidase, cellulase R-10, and glucose oxidase, were involved for evaluating the discriminating capability. The introduction of the FP signaling channel improved the discriminating power of the sensor array, so that the 10 glycoproteins at 0.15 μM could be well discriminated both in PBS buffer and in the presence of human serum sample. The identification accuracy of the unknown samples was 96.25% (77 out of 80) at the 0.15 μM level and 97.50% (78 out of 80) at the 0.2 μM level. The integration of the signaling patterns with different responsive principles was demonstrated as the promising way to enhance the discrimination power of the single-probe-based sensor arrays.

Synthesis of Quantum Dot-ZnS Nanosheet Inorganic Assembly with Low Thermal Fluorescent Quenching for LED Application

Yangyang Xie,Chong Geng,Yiqun Gao,Jay Guoxu Liu,Zi-Hui Zhang,Yonghui Zhang,Shu Xu,Wengang Bi

In this report, to tackle the thermal fluorescent quenching issue of II-VI semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), which hinders their on-chip packaging application to light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a QD-ZnS nanosheet inorganic assembly monolith (QD-ZnS NIAM) is developed through chemisorption of QDs on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) ZnS nanosheets and subsequent assembly of the nanosheets into a compact inorganic monolith. The QD-ZnS NIAM could reduce the thermal fluorescent quenching of QDs effectively, possibly due to fewer thermally induced permanent trap states and decreased Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) among QDs when compared with those in a reference QD composite thin film. We have demonstrated that the QD-ZnS NIAM enables QDs to be directly packaged on-chip in LEDs with over 90% of their initial luminance being retained at above 85 °C, showing advantage in LED application in comparison with conventional QD composite film. Keywords:quantum dots;nanosheet;assembly;thermal stability

Macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composite spheres as efficient and stable photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen generation

Zhang Runlin,Xie Jiwei,Wang Chao,Liu Jing,Zheng Xianfeng,Li Yu,Yang Xiaoyu,Wang Hong-En,Su Bao-Lian

Solar-driven hydrogen (H 2 ) generation utilizing photocatalysts has received extensive attention because of its potential to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental problem. The implementation of efficient H 2 production strongly relies on stable, active, and low-cost photocatalysts. In this work, we report the designed synthesis of macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composite spheres as a highly active photocatalyst for H 2 production via solar-driven water splitting. The composite spheres were synthesized by a facile solvothermal reaction paired with controllable ion-exchange processes. The resulting material exhibits superior photocatalytic activity, delivering a high H 2 production rate of ~11.37 mmol h −1  g −1 under light illumination (250–780 nm, with an ultraviolet light intensity of 34 mW cm −2 and visible light intensity of 158 mW cm −2 ). Such performance enhancement can be mainly ascribed to the synergic effects of the composite structure: (1) formation of coherent ZnO/CdS and ZnS/CdS heterojunctions at nanoscale, facilitating charge separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, (2) highly accessible inner surface of the meso/macroporous ZnO/ZnS/CdS composites for rapid mass transfer of electrolyte, and (3) enhanced visible light scattering capability induced by their large particle size.
