Fabrication of porous polymer membrane with controlled drug release and efficient antibacterial performances is of great interest in biomedical fields. In this study, Laponite (LAP) nanodisks were first used to encapsulate a model antibiotic drug, tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Then, drug-loaded LAP nanodisks with an optimized loading efficiency (85.3 %) were mixed with poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) polymer to form drug-loaded composite porous membrane via solvent coasting. The structure, morphology and swelling property of the porous membranes formed with varied solvent ratio of methylene dichloride (DCM) and dimethyl formamide (DMF) in the mixture solvent were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and swelling test. In vitro drug release behavior, the cytotoxicity and the antibacterial activity of drug-loaded composite membranes were evaluated. Results showed that the TCH release was dependent on the physical structure of PLLA membrane and the presence of LAP nanodisks effectively weakened the initial burst release of TCH, and improved the sustained release property of porous PLLA membrane. The released TCH of TCH/LAP/PLLA 3:1 and TCH/LAP/PLLA 4:1 was 10.0 % and 5.3 % within initial 1 h, respectively. More importantly, the porous TCH/LAP/PLLA membrane was cytocompatible and displayed considerable antibacterial activity, solely associated with the loaded TCH drug, confirming its potential utility in wound dressings and tissue engineering.

In contrast with traditional chemotherapy, controlled drug delivery systems provide many advantages. Herein, a thermosensitive star polymer pompon with a core–arm structure was synthesized using a grafting-on method as a thermo-responsive controlled release drug carrier. Single-chain cyclized/knotted poly tetra(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (polyTEGDA) was used as the hydrophobic core, and thermosensitive linear poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-methylolacrylamide) (poly(NIPAM-co-NMA)) was selected as the hydrophilic arm. Below or above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the linear poly(NIPAM-co-NMA) grafted onto the polyTEGDA core adopted a stretched or curled status, respectively, then the drug could be loaded in or extruded out. The LCST of star polyTEGDA-b-poly(NIPAM-co-NMA) was adjusted to slightly above body temperature (37 °C). The antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX) was successfully loaded into the pompons with a high loading capacity of 19.45%. The cumulative release of DOX from loaded pompons in vitro for 72 hours was 71% and 20.7% at 42 °C and 37 °C, respectively, indicating that the excellent temperature-controlled release characteristics result from the unique thermo-responsive extrusion effect. Moreover, DOX loaded polyTEGDA-b-poly(NIPAM-co-NMA) pompons achieved better antitumor ability against ovarian carcinoma SKOV3 cells at 42 °C compared with that at 37 °C. These results suggest that star polyTEGDA-b-poly(NIPAM-co-NMA) pompons have considerable promise as thermo-responsive controlled drug delivery carriers.

This paper proposes a novel type of multifunctional envelope-type mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) to achieve cancer cell targeting and drug-controlled release. In this system, MSNs were first modified by active targeting moiety hyaluronic acid (HA) for breast cancer cell targeting and hyaluronidases (Hyal)-induced intracellular drug release. Then gelatin, a proteinaceous biopolymer, was grafted onto the MSNs to form a capping layer via glutaraldehyde-mediated cross-linking. To shield against unspecific uptake of cells and prolong circulation time, the nanoparticles were further decorated with poly(ethylene glycol) polymers (PEG) to obtain MSN@HA-gelatin-PEG (MHGP). Doxorubicin (DOX), as a model drug, was loaded into PEMSN to assess the breast cancer cell targeting and drug release behaviours. In vitro study revealed that PEG chains protect the targeting ligand and shield against normal cells. After reaching the breast cancer cells, MMP-2 overpressed by cells hydrolyses gelatin layer to deshield PEG and switch on the function of HA. As a result, DOX-loaded MHGP was selectively trapped by cancer cells through HA receptor-mediated endocytosis and subsequently release DOX due to Hyal-catalysed degradation of HA. This system presents successful bienzyme-responsive targeting drug delivery in an optimal fashion and provides potential applications for targeted cancer therapy.

The attapulgite (ATP) is one of important raw materials of ceramics and often used as a loading carrier. To control the release rate of composite flame retardant (CFR) when exposed to a fire, and to meet the multi-stage flame retarding requirements, the vacuum negative pressure method was adopted to load four kinds of monomer flame retardants on porous ATP as a carrier after activating pretreatment, respectively. Then CFR nanoparticles with controlled-release effects were prepared by the in-situ polymerization reaction on the surface of monomer flame retardants. After that, zinc hydroxyl stannate , styrene, melamine formaldehyde resin and silicon dioxide with high thermal stability and excellent flame retarding properties were selected as the coating layer of four kinds of monomer flame retardants on ATP carrier. Test results of environmental scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer show the satisfactory loading and coating results of CFR nanoparticles. Test results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirm the excellent loading conditions and coating film formation on ATP carrier. The thermogravimetry-differential thermal scanning calorimetry tests indicate that the flame retarding duration of both loaded and coated CFR nanoparticles on ATP carrier is prolonged and has a satisfactory controlled-release effect.

Cobalt (Co) ions, which can mimic hypoxia to promote angiogenesis, exhibit great potential for bone repair. However, a key point for the use of Co ions is that their release profile should be controllable and, more importantly, suitable for the bone regeneration process. Here, 2-ethylimidazole (eIm) was introduced into zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) to slow down Co-ion release and fabricate eIm-doped ZIF-67 (eIm/ZIF-67), which was combined into gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) to obtain an in situ photo-cross-linking nanocomposite hydrogel as a tunable Co-ion controlled release system. A tunable and controlled release of Co ions from the nanocomposite hydrogel was achieved by variation of linker composition, and GelMA with 75% eIm/ZIF-67 (with 75% eIm in the precursor solutions) could maintain a 21-day sustained release of Co ions, which is matched with early-stage angiogenesis during the bone formation process. Our in vitro study also showed that the GelMA@eIm/ZIF-67 hydrogel could reduce cytotoxicity and effectively promote the angiogenic activity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Moreover, an in vivo rat calvarial defect model demonstrated that the GelMA@eIm/ZIF-67 hydrogel exhibited remarkably enhanced bone formation and neovascularization abilities and had good biocompatibility as shown in organ histopathological examinations. Therefore, this novel nanocomposite hydrogel has strong therapeutic potential as a desirable Co-ion controlled release system and a powerful proangiogenic/osteogenic agent for the treatment of bone defects.

Controlled-release formulations (CRFs) have potential applications in modern agriculture, for it can not only prolong the duration of agrochemicals but also alleviate the adverse effect on non-target organism. In this study, we constructed pyraclostrobin@SiO2@polydopamine microcapsule (Pyr@SiO2@PDA MC). The resulting microcapsule is a near-rod shape (about 1.15 μm), which has a drug-loading efficiency of 55%. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) revealed the successful entrapment of the pesticide. The coating of polydopamine (PDA) endowing the microcapsule with superior UV-shielding properties than pyraclostrobin@SiO2 microcapsule (Pyr@SiO2 MC). Compared with pyraclostrobin emulsifiable concentrate (EC), the Pyr@SiO2@PDA MC exhibited 9.07-, 5.50-, 4.93- and 4.16-fold higher fungicidal activity against Rice blast fungus (Pyricularia oryzae) at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mg/L. Moreover, acute toxicity tests demonstrated that the sample on zebrafish with lower toxicity on the first day. These results showed that the obtained microcapsule may process broader application potential in agriculture.

Giving the coating to exert a powerful active protective effect for metal substrates, such as self-healing property by encapsulating corrosion inhibitor into a pH-responsive release tool, is a crucial way to develop an efficient anticorrosive coating. Here, a pH-responsive hydrophilic controlled release system (BTA@ZIF-8@tannic acid, abbreviated ZBT) based on ZIF-8 for waterborne EP self-healing anticorrosive coating was reported. Encapsulation of BTA into ZIF-8 by a facile one-pot method and the resulting product showed a high loading percentage. The anticorrosion performance of composite coatings was studied by EIS, and the results indicated that ZBT could effectively enhance the protective performance of the coating and endow it with outstanding self-healing performance, in which the |Z| 0.01 Hz was about 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure EP coating after 20 days of immersion. The outstanding performance is related to the excellent compatibility of ZBT, the blocking effect of newly produced hydrophobic substances and the corrosion inhibitor and ferric tannate protective films formed on the exposed metal surface. In this work, tannic acid plays a role of killing two birds with one stone in enhancing the corrosion protection performance of the coating. This synergistic strategy opens a new possibility to fabricating excellent anticorrosive coatings with efficient self-healing functionality.

Titanium (Ti)-based implants have to undergo many severe ordeals under the complex in vivo microenvironments, which makes greater demands on the biological function of their surfaces. As a result, it is particularly important to develop the intelligent surfaces of Ti-based implants. In this study, metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) were prepared on pure Ti surfaces to achieve the pH-controlled release of bioactive divalent metal ions ( e.g. , Sr 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Mn 2+ ). The practical potential of MPNs-based coatings in biomedical applications was further highlighted by the controllable release amount and species of metal ions. MPNs coated Ti surfaces displayed excellent biological properties, including enhanced protein adsorption, good biocompatibility as well as the promoted adhesion and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). What’s more, a continuous release of bioactive divalent metal ions ( e.g. , Sr 2+ and/or Cu 2+ ) significantly accelerated the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. The surface modification method based on MPNs provides an extremely feasible solution for preparing Ti-based implants that can adapt to different in vivo microenvironments.

Organic and inorganic nanomaterials have shown great potential in drug delivery applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Orally administered nanoparticles have attracted great attention because it is acceptable, convenient, and safe. However, nanoparticles need to overcome numerous hurdles such as acidic gastric environment, the continuous secretion of mucus, and fast gastric emptying after being delivered via an oral route. Here, we used a stimuli-responsive and triggered release strategy for superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONPs)-loaded gastro-retentive tablets for in situ bubbles generation. These materials realize SPIOs controlled release and delivery specific to the stomach. The tablet formulation contains a foaming agent (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO 3 ), adhesive component (HPMC/carbomer 934 P (1:1)), filler (lactose/mannitol (10:1)) and SPIONPs. The in vitro bubble generation and SPIONPs released from the tablets were characterized. The ex vivo gastric adhesive ability, acoustic stimuli performance, and tissue penetration were further evaluated. The results show that when the fabricated tablets interacted with the acidic microenvironment, the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) could be generated and be captured by ultrasound (US) imaging. Simultaneous with bubble production, SPIONPs are released from the tablets to further control ultrasound-mediated force and deliver SPIONPs entering through the mucus layer. The SPIONPs were loaded in the tablets and could be released in a controllable way; thus, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could also be used to monitor the tablet status and SPIONP delivery process. Therefore, SPIONPs-loaded gastro-retentive effervescent tablets offer effective release and absorption of nanoparticles in the gastric area and be imaged by MRI and US.

Supported palladium catalysts have attracted significant attention for use in cross-coupling reactions due to their recyclability. However, the inevitable progressive loss of Pd that occurs in the catalytic process deactivates the catalysts, which hinders their sustainable application. Herein, we report a zeolite-enhanced sustainable Pd catalyst for C–C cross-coupling reactions. Zeolite does a good job of acting as a sink for Pd2+ ions. This catalyst exhibits an excellent homogeneous catalytic performance by releasing Pd species from zeolite. In addition, the Pd2+ ions were successfully recaptured in a controlled catalytic system by combining the uniform microporous structure and good adsorption features of zeolite. The release/capture mechanism of the Pd species guaranteed the high loading and high dispersion of Pd on the recycled catalyst. The 0.84%Pd@USY catalysts were reused at least 10 times in water without an appreciable reduction in activity. This study presents a new perspective toward the design of a highly efficient and sustainable supported metal catalyst.

In order to investigate the influence of different embedding methods on the properties and function of polyphenols, the Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) loaded chitosan nanoparticles prepared with or without β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) were obtained by ionic cross linking method. The average particle sizes of EGCG loaded chitosan nanoparticles (EGCG-CS NPs) decreased from 190 nm to 157 nm after adding with β-Lg, whereas the encapsulation efficiency (EE) increased from 59.79 % to 76.29 %. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the obtained nanoparticles had obvious core-shell structure. The results of simulated gastrointestinal digestion showed that the release rate of EGCG in CS/β-Lg NPs was much lower than that of CS-NPs. Compared with free EGCG, the DPPH and FRAP assay showed that EGCG-CS NPs and EGCG-CS/β-Lg NPs had slow-controlled antioxidant activity. Meanwhile, the study of cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) showed that the EC 50 values of EGCG-CS NPs and EGCG-CS/β-Lg NPs were decreased by 8.56 % and 18.35 %, respectively.

Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) stabilized solely by bioderived starch-based particles hold potential for application in the food and pharmaceutical fields. This paper reports the use of a thermoresponsive 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl starch (HBPS) particle as a representative natural biocompatible material for use as an effective stabilizer for HIPE formation. HBPS is synthesized by using butyl glycidyl ether as a hydrophobic reagent to change the hydrophobic–hydrophilic balance of starch, and then starch-based particles are fabricated by a simple nanoprecipitation procedure. The size of particles increased with an increase in temperature, and the particles are essentially monodisperse with a PDI of about 0.1 when the temperature was above 15 °C. These HBPS particles were subsequently used as an effective stabilizer to fabricate stable oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering HIPEs with an internal phase volume of 80% at different stabilizer concentrations. The results demonstrated that increasing the particle concentration is conducive to the formation of stable Pickering HIPEs with greater stiffnesses. In addition, the nutraceutical material (β-carotene) was encapsulated into HIPEs and in vitro release experiments revealed that the release in this system can be controlled by adjusting the temperature.
