Polyamide TFC membranes are widely applied in membrane-based water treatment but generally suffer various fouling problems. In this work, the layer-by-layer assembly of phytic acid (PA) and metal ions (M) is constructed on the surface TFC membrane for the first time, to improve the bio/organic fouling resistances and separation performance of TFC membranes simultaneously. The PA molecule with six phosphonic acid groups of strong chelation ability acts as the organic ligand, and the metal ion acts as the inorganic cross-linker, inducing the assembly of hydrophilic and antibacterial PA-M (Ag or Cu) complexes on the TFC membrane surface. Various characterizations including FTIR, XPS, SEM, AFM, and EDX are employed to confirm the successful and uniform modification of PA-M. FO performance of the PA-M modified TFC membranes, i.e., TFC_PA-Ag and TFC_PA-Cu, is optimized by varying PA concentration and assembly cycles, where the water flux can be improved by 57% and 68%, respectively, without compromising the membrane selectivity. Additionally, the PA-M modification improves the biofouling and organic fouling resistances of the TFC membrane remarkably, owing to the enhanced antibacterial ability and hydrophilicity. The modified TFC membranes are also proven to show the excellent stability by the quantitative release test.

A magnetite@graphene oxide nanocomposite was first coated with polyethylenimine and then modified with phytic acid and titanium(IV) ions. The high loading with Ti(IV) and the good hydrophilicity of PEI and PA result in a material that can be applied to the efficient extraction of highly polar nucleobases, nucleosides and nucleotides. The physicochemical properties of the composite were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry. A series of parameters that affect extraction and elution under the conditions of immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) were examined. The analytes were eluted from the nanocomposites using 10 mM trisodium phosphate as the elution solution in the IMAC mode, and 50% methanol-water as elution solution in the HILIC mode. Figures of merit include (a) an intra-day precision of 0.1–1.0% in the IMAC mode; (b) an intra-day precision of 0.4%–0.8% in the HILIC mode; (c) detection limits between 1.8–2.8 ng mL −1 in the IMAC mode; and (d) detection limits of 4.0–10.5 ng mL −1 in the HILIC mode. The method was applied to the extraction of the nucleotides cytidine-5′-monophosphate (CMP), uridine-5′-monophosphate (UMP), guanosine-5′-monophosphate (GMP), and adenosine-5′-monophosphate (AMP), and the nucleobases and nucleosides hypoxanthine, adenosine, cytosine, inosine and cytidine from Cordyceps sinensis , Lentinus edodes and plasma samples.
Schematic presentation of the workflow for the extraction of nucleobases, nucleosides and nucleotides using phytic acid-Ti(IV) functionalized magnetite@graphene oxide nanocomposites under two distinct modes.

In this work, a conversion coating of phytic acid (PA)/calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) was prepared on a magnesium-strontium (Mg-Sr) alloy surface through a layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The effect of the pH value on the corrosion resistance of coatings was studied systematically. The addition of a Ca 2+ could enhance the intermolecular chelation of PA and repair the defects of the coating itself. The results of electrochemical and immersion testing confirmed that a PA/Ca 2+ conversion coating could adjust the corrosion rate of Mg-Sr alloys. Compared to a bare Mg-Sr alloy, the corrosion current density of Mg&OH&PA(5.5)&Ca 2+ was decreased by about three orders (2.726 × 10 −4 A/cm 2 to 4.304 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 ). In vitro tests showed that a Ca 2+ in the coatings could not only promote the formation of apatite , but also favored osteoblast proliferation. In addition, this conversion coating could significantly enhance the expression of alkaline phosphatase activity by 50–60% compared to a bare Mg-Sr alloy.

Here we present a new method to fabricate enzyme-mimic metal-free catalysts for electrochemical detection of superoxide anion (O 2 •− ) by introducing phosphate groups into graphene-based foam. Through a template-free hydrothermal process, graphene oxide (GO) was treated with different amount of phytic acid (PA) to obtain 3D porous graphene-based foam (PAGF). Characterizations demonstrate that phosphate groups were successfully modified on the surface and inter layer structure of PAGF materials and the defects and disorder degree of PAGF could be controlled by adjusting the addition of PA precursors. Meanwhile, the synthesized PAGF was successfully immobilized on screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) and employed in O 2 •− detection. With PA treated on graphene structure, the resulted PAGF/SPCEs exhibit distinct characteristic redox peaks, showing enzyme-mimic catalytic activity toward O 2 •− dismutation. Also, the amount of modified phosphate groups has caused a considerable variety on the performance of PAGF-based electrodes. Apart from high sensitivity, wide liner range, low detection limit, good selectivity and long-term stability, our sensors also present satisfying performance in the real-time monitoring of drug-induced O 2 •− released from Hela cells . The reliability of the biological measurement was further demonstrated via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to characterize the released O 2 •− from stimulated cells by using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPOL) to trap the transient O 2 •− . The above results indicate that our established sensors hold potential application in the real-time detection of O 2 •− in biological samples.

A one-pot and two-step process in the case of microwave irradiation was used to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol polymer sponge (PVA polymer sponge) and polyvinyl alcohol/phytic acid polymer sponge (PVA/PA polymer sponge). The characterization of them showed that the ether bonds made linear PVA molecules weave a stacked two-dimensional structure in PVA polymer sponge, and the ether bonds and phosphonate bonds made the linear PVA molecules and cricoid PA molecules weave three-dimensional structure in PVA/PA polymer sponge, which owned the polyporus morphology. The investigations for thermal stability, surface resistivity and self-extinguishing time exhibited that they apart reached 235.5 and 354.8 °C and 5.40 × 10 9 and 1.63 × 10 5 Ω/sq and 18.00 and 9.00 s.

The impact of phytic acid on lipid digestion and curcumin bioaccessibility in oil-in-water nanoemulsions was investigated using a simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The size, charge, and structural organization of the colloidal particles in the system were measured as the curcumin-loaded emulsions (7 mg curcumin per g lipid) were passed through simulated mouth (pH 6.8, 2 min), stomach (pH 2.5, 2 hours), and small intestine (pH 7.0, 2 hours) stages. After the small intestine stage, the level of free fatty acids (FFAs) generated and the bioaccessibility of curcumin were measured. The total amount of FFAs released significantly decreased with increasing phytic acid level, from 105.7 ± 5.9% (control) to 78.4 ± 6.4% (0.5% phytic acid). Conversely, curcumin bioaccessibility significantly increased from 39.4 ± 3.5% (control) to 74.7 ± 2.6% (0.5% phytic acid). The inverse relationship between lipolysis and curcumin bioaccessibility was ascribed to the impact of phytic acid on droplet flocculation and the level of free calcium ions present, which affected the production of mixed micelles capable of solubilizing the nutraceutical. The knowledge obtained here might prove beneficial for the employment of phytic acid as a multifunctional ingredient that inhibits lipid digestion while boosting nutraceutical bioavailability.

An electrochemical sensor was developed for detecting heavy metal ions by using a phytic acid functionalized polypyrrole (PPy)/graphene oxide (GO) modified electrode. PPy/GO nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ chemical oxidation polymerization. The PPy/GO nanocomposites were functionalized with phytic acid (PA) molecules by electrostatic attraction. The structural features of the fabricated nanocomposites were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The PA/PPy/GO modified electrode exhibited high electrochemical conductivity, and produced a remarkable increase in peak current compared with the PPy/GO and PA/GO modified electrodes. The developed sensor was used for the electrochemical analysis of various trace metal ions by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode demonstrated to measure Cd(II) and Pb(II) with a linear working range of 5–150 μg/L. This work demonstrated a simple, rapid and high performing electrochemical strategy for high-sensitivity detection of heavy metal ions.

Wearable strain sensors have aroused myriad of interest in the domain of electronic skin, soft robotics, and biomedicine. Organogels for wearable strain sensors require desirable stretchability, sensing stability, self-healing property, and a wide working temperature range. However, the synthesis of such organogels typically involves complex and time-consuming processes. Herein, we proposed a rapid copolymerization method for organogels composed of poly(acrylic acid- co -acrylic amide) (P(AA-co-AM)), phytic acid (PA), liquid metal (LM), and polyethylene oxide (PEO). The dispersion of GaInSn in PA solution (GaInSn-PA) was synthesized and employed to initiate the copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylic amide (AM), which significantly reduced polymerization time to 2–3 min at room temperature. The release of Ga 3+ ions from the LM facilitated cross-linking of P(AA-co-AM) chains through coordination bonds, while also imparted conductivity to the organogel. The synergistic effect between hydrogen bonds and metal coordination bonds extensive within the polymer chains imparted exceptional stretchability (1079 % strain) and self-healing efficiency (98 % at 60 °C) to the organogel. Consequently, the resulting strain sensor demonstrated the ability to accurately monitor both subtle and large human motion, exhibiting remarkable repeatability and durability across a wide temperature range (-20 °C∼40 °C). In addition, the integration of strain sensors on limbs for robotic control through limb movements underscored its practical viability. This optimized fabrication approach and structural design strategy set a new precedent for the development of organogel strain sensors in various applications.

A mussel-inspired polydopamine-assisted layer-by-layer assembly combined with a metal-chelating strategy using phytic acid was employed to synthesize a novel multi-level core-shell magnesium carbonate-based flame retardant (AMC@PDA@PA-Ni) for enhancing the fire safety of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers. The incorporation of 50 wt% AMC@PDA@PA-Ni increased the LOI of the EVA composite to 30.3 %, achieving a UL94 V-1 rating. Compared to pristine EVA, the composite exhibited a 63.3 % reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and a 66.7 % decrease in peak smoke release rate (pSPR). At elevated temperatures, the combined effects of AMC's gas-solid phase flame retardancy, the phosphorus-containing flame retardant's quenching action, and the transition metal nickel's catalytic charring capability significantly contributed to the composite's superior fire resistance. Additionally, the tensile strength of the EVA/AMC@PDA@PA-Ni composite increased by 97.6 % relative to EVA/AMC, attributed to the PDA modification, which enhanced filler dispersion and interfacial adhesion. This study introduces a facile and effective strategy for developing bio-based multi-level core-shell hybrid flame retardants with outstanding fire resistance and mechanical strength retention.

Addressing uranium-contaminated wastewater is crucial for environmental protection and public health. This study introduces an innovative and efficient capacitive deionization (CDI) method for extracting U(VI) from wastewater, utilizing a phytic acid (PA)-modified MnO 2 @GO aerogel as the electrode material. The incorporation of PA effectively disrupts the dense crystalline structure of MnO 2 , transforming it into an amorphous and porous framework. This structural change significantly enhances the specific surface area by approximately 450 % and creates more active sites for ion adsorption. Electrochemical characterization reveals that the PA modification improves capacitive performance by enhancing capacitance and reducing charge transfer resistance. Consequently, the PA-MnO 2 @GO aerogel exhibits excellent electrochemical properties and enhanced capacitive deionization performance, enabling rapid U(VI) removal under low voltage in a CDI cell configuration. This CDI cell achieves a maximum U(VI) removal capacity of 636 mg g −1 . Furthermore, the material demonstrates exceptional cycling stability and selectivity, maintaining approximately 83 % of its initial removal capacity after 20 cycles and exhibiting high adsorption efficiency even in the presence of interfering ions. This research presents an economical and effective novel approach for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater using CDI technology, significantly contributing to the safe utilization of nuclear energy and environmental conservation.

As a bio-based wood product, plywood is widely used in furniture, flooring, packaging, architectural decoration, etc. However, the flammability of plywood limits its application. Using flame-retardant adhesives to prepare plywood is the simplest way to improve its flame-retardant properties. However, a challenge in flame-retardant adhesives arose from the negative effect of flame retardants on the curing and bonding properties of adhesives. Herein, we developed a method to prepare a flame-retardant adhesive modified by using Z-3A molecular sieves as carriers to load flame retardants such as phytic acid and ammonium polyphosphate. The flame-retardant performance of obtained plywood bonded by this flame-retardant adhesive was significantly improved with robust bonding strength under extraordinarily low loading of flame retardants. Even if the loading rate of ZPA flame retardant for 2-ZPA-5 plywood was as low as 2.2 %, the total smoke production and the maximal peak value of the heat release rate were reduced by 79 % and 14 %, respectively, with the limiting oxygen index being 33.6 %, the time to ignition delaying by 14 s, robust wet bonding strength being 1.79 MPa, anti-loss rate as 1.06 ± 0.18 %, and moisture absorption rate as 4.45 ± 0.14 %. The whole process needs neither tedious work or equipment nor high loading of flame retardants. This judicious design strategy offers a versatile and scalable approach to preparing flame retardant plywood.

Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials (HPCMs) have attracted great attention due to their excellent physical and chemical properties and the enhanced performance of multiple heteroatom co-doping. Herein, N, P-co-doped porous carbon materials (NPPCs) are developed via a novel synthesis of the phytic acid-induced self-assembled chitosan aerogel followed by pyrolysis and activation. Phytic acid serves as a P source, acid regulator and structure-directing agent for improved activation efficiency to create more pores. A little of NaNO 3 is used both as a template and activator simultaneously. The porosity and N content of such NPPCs are controlled by rationally tuning the pyrolysis temperature and the mount of NaNO 3 . The NPPC-0.75-600 delivers a good CO 2 adsorption capability of 3.02 and 5.31 mmol g −1 at 100 and 500 kPa, respectively, and has an excellent stability with almost no adsorption capacity decay even after successive 20 cycles. For supercapacitors (SCs), the NPPC-0.75-700 also displays a high capacitance of 231.2 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and an outstanding stability at circa 96.7% initial capacity after 10000 cycles. These results highlight the great potential of such NPPCs in CO 2 capture and SCs, and the novel synthetical route offers new insights for the readily scalable production of HPCMs.
