Polyimide (PI) aerogels possess a rather potential in thermal protection material for aircraft, owing to their low thermal conductivity, high thermal stability, and low bulk density. However, the large shrinkage of pure PI aerogels is still a challenge in the complete preparation process. Herein, a kind of PI hybrid aerogel composite was prepared successfully by introducing polyurethane fiber as the reinforcing agent. The aerogel composite could realize the enhancement for the pure PI aerogels from a micro/macroscopic perspective, ultimately ensuring the ultralow shrinkage rate of 3.52%. Due to the inhibition of the shrinkage characteristic, the aerogel composite obtained achieved excellent thermal insulation, especially retaining a low temperature of 40.7°C despite the hot surface temperature reached up to 150°C. Besides, the lightweight low-density, exceptional flame resistance, and self-extinguishing properties were reflected from PI hybrid aerogel composite constructed, including the outstanding hydrophobic feature (water contact angle of 120°). The PI hybrid aerogel composite as prepared may be used for the thermal management of aircraft in a great measure, illustrating the feasible strategy of fabricating PI-based aerogel composites.

Thermally rearranged (TR) polymers are increasingly pivotal in gas separation membranes, with a pressing need for advancements in mechanical strength and separation performance. In this work, a novel variety of TR polymers were synthesized by polymerizing an amine-functionalized triptycene structure with thermally rearrangeable ortho -hydroxy groups. The TR membranes demonstrate enhanced gas permeability in H 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /CH 4 tests and increased polymer chain spacing. Additionally, incorporating triptycene enhanced the mechanical properties of TR polymers, primarily attributed to the π-π stacking interactions of the triptycene units. Notably, the 6FDA-BAP:DAT (2:1) membrane thermally rearranged at 400 °C exhibited a H 2 permeability of 225.3 Barrer and a H 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 146.3, representing increases of 320 % and 154 %, respectively, compared to the precursor, and surpassing the H 2 /CH 4 upper bound. This work presents a robust design strategy for preparing mechanically durable TR membranes with enhanced gas separation performance.

Integrally-skinned asymmetric (ISA) polymer membranes show enormous potential in efficiently energy-saving organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) due to their excellent structural stability. However, the control of their microstructures at the nanoscale is technically challenging, making it difficult to simultaneously achieve high separation resolution and high solvent permeance. In this work, we report the in-situ evolution of polyimide ISA membranes from ultrafiltration to nanofiltration through thermal-induced densification of the surfaces. This process was attributed to the surface dynamics of polymers — i.e., the polymer segments on surface are more freely movable than that in bulk. The optimum treatment temperature was located between the glass transition temperatures of surface and bulk, which were measured based on porosity changes. The as-prepared ISA membranes with thin and dense skin layers exhibited high solvent permeance (e.g., over 5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for ethanol) and favorable molecular weight cut-off of around 300 Da. The membranes rivaled the state-of-the-art thin film composite membranes, demonstrating great potential in fast and precise molecular separation in OSN.

The reprocessing stability and recyclability of bio-based thermosetting materials have positive environmental and economic values. In this work, two types of lignocellulosic polyimide vitrimers were developed from two lignin-derived aldehyde monomers and a cellulose-derived diamine monomer based on a dynamic covalent adaptive network. Both polyimide vitrimers demonstrated high fracture strengths of up to 67.5 and 40.2 MPa, and the vitrimers had no obvious dissolution and weight change after soaking in ten common solvents for 30 days. Similar to other literature reports, the vitrimers still maintained more than 92% fracture strength after 5 fracture–hot-press cycles. Besides, due to the presence of large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus elements, both vitrimers exhibited good flame-retardant properties: they could self-extinguish in 10 s while removing the flame after ignition and generated no molten droplets. More importantly, these two highly cross-linked thermoset materials were efficiently transformed back into related monomers, guaranteeing excellent monomer–polymer–monomer closed-loop recycling. The stable cycle processability and efficient closed-loop recovery of lignocellulosic thermosetting materials provided the possibility of the efficient utilization of biomass materials. Furthermore, the successful preparation of basalt fiber composites with high mechanical properties and easy recovery demonstrated the application potential of these vitrimers.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are an energy efficient and highly tunable approach to gas separation, achieved by integrating the distinct transport properties of polymers and nanomaterials. However, MMMs commonly face challenges such as trade-off between permeability and selectivity, as well as CO 2 plasticization. In particular, polyimide membranes suffer from low resistance to CO 2 plasticization, typically below 15 bar. In this study, we present a synergistic approach to overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off, and enhance CO 2 plasticization resistance through the rational engineering of the fractional free volume (FFV) of 6FDA-durene polyimide-based MMMs. A highly permeable aluminum-based metal-organic framework (MOF), Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU-10-H) was first incorporated into the 6FDA-durene polyimide matrix to enhance the FFV, thereby improving gas permeability. A small loading of CAU-10-H increased the CO 2 permeability by 98.8% (e.g., from 501 to 996 Barrer), with only a slight decrease in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (e.g., from 15 to 13.4). Subsequently, sub-nanometer transport control was achieved by introducing amine-based cross-linkers to regulate the expanded polyimide matrix and strengthen the polymer-MOF interface. The optimized 6D/CAU(3):EDA-2h membrane demonstrated a H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 8.5 while maintaining a high H 2 permeability of 34 Barrer. This represents an 8.5-fold improvement in selectivity compared to the uncross-linked MMM, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated improved resistance to CO 2 plasticization up to 30 bar and moderate resistance to physical aging, exhibiting a 43% decrease in H 2 permeability over 100 days. These findings highlight the potential of synergistic filler-matrix-cross-linker integration as an effective strategy for advancing MMMs toward next-generation gas separation membranes.

A 35 μm porous polyimide separator with a high tensile strength of 13.51 MPa was fabricated via vapor-induced phase separation, and plasma modification further improved wettability and Zn 2+ affinity, enabling uniform Zn deposition and dendrite suppression. • The synergistic combination of a hydrophobic polymer backbone and Zn 2+ -affinitive imide groups regulates ion transport and interfacial chemistry, yielding an impressive Zn 2+ transference number of 0.62. • Zinc-based cells equipped with the mPI separator exhibit ultralong cycling stability (1318 h at 1 mA cm -2 for symmetric cells) and significantly improved volumetric energy density (28.33 Wh L -1 for full cells). Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising technology for large-scale grid energy storage due to their intrinsic safety and low cost. However, their achievable energy density and cycling stability remain severely constrained by the lack of advanced separators. Herein, we report a polyimide-based separator (denoted as mPI) fabricated via vapor-induced phase separation combined with plasma surface treatment. The resulting separator features a uniform porous architecture, a thickness of only 35 μm, a high tensile strength of 13.51 MPa, a Young's modulus of 341.77 MPa, and an impressive Zn 2+ transference number of 0.62. In Zn||Zn symmetric cells, the mPI separator enables an extended cycling lifespan of 1318 h under 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, Zn||Zn x V 2 O 5 full cells utilizing the mPI separator deliver a high specific capacity of 180.64 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention of 84.64% after 1000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . Notably, the full cells achieve a high volumetric energy density of 28.33 Wh L −1 when cycled at 0.5 A g −1 . This simple yet effective separator design offers valuable insights for the development of safe and high-performance AZIBs. A polyimide separator fabricated via vapor-induced phase separation and plasma modification enables regulated Zn 2+ transport and uniform deposition, thereby suppressing dendrites and side reactions while achieving high volumetric energy density. To address the challenges of multifunctional integration in electronic devices, this study establishes a versatile material matrix that combines exceptional performance with structural design flexibility, enabling multifunctional “on-demand integration” and “synergistic optimization.” We successfully constructed a polyimide Janus matrix film through an innovative dual-pore-forming agent synergistic pore-forming strategy. The unique “dense-layer-porous-layer” asymmetric structure integrates high mechanical strength (>70 MPa), flexibility, ultralow thermal conductivity (0.067 W·m–1·K–1), and outstanding chemical stability, forming a tailorable functional integration universal platform We demonstrated its “on-demand functionalization” potential by loading CNTs@Fe3O4 hybrid materials, transforming the platform into a functional composite with advanced capabilities such as highly efficient electromagnetic shielding (>40 dB) and active overheating warning. This work transcends the traditional approach of developing single-function materials. The constructed polyimide platform material provides an innovative solution for the integrated design of future electronic devices.

A novel fluorine-modified polyimide aerogel (FPIA) was proposed via stepwise gelation. • The dual role of fluorine was revealed in refining hierarchical pore structure and suppressing phonon transport. • FPIA achieved a 60% reduction in thermal conductivity to 0.0211 W/(m·K). • FPIA exhibited wide-frequency ultralow dielectric constant and ultralow dielectric loss. • FPIA provides a viable material strategy for extreme-environment thermal and electrical management. Polyimide (PI) aerogels have shown promising applications in aerospace and microelectronics due to their excellent thermal stability and low density. However, the simultaneous achievement of thermal insulation and ultralow dielectric constant is extremely challenging, as the optimal nanostructures for these two properties often conflict. In this study, a new type of fluorine-modified PI aerogel (FPIA) was developed by introducing fluorine-containing monomers into the molecular chain and generating nano-sized multi-level pore structures through a stepwise gelation strategy, which enabled systematic control over the density, shrinkage, and nanoporous structure. The introduced fluorine groups not only effectively refined the pore structure but also significantly reduced the thermal conductivity of the material by enhancing the scattering of phonons by inhibiting the main thermal conductive pathway of lattice vibration. The prepared aerogel, featuring a high specific surface area (>300 m 2 /g) and a multi-level pore structure, achieves a synergistically balanced comprehensive performance via multi-objective trade-off optimization: the room-temperature thermal conductivity is reduced by approximately 60%, down to 0.0211 W/(m·K), and the dielectric constant is stable at approximately 1.22 within a 4–18 GHz wide frequency range and ultralow dielectric loss of approximately 0.005. This research not only provides a feasible preparation strategy for high-performance PI aerogels but also reveals the key role of fluorine modification in synergistically enhancing insulation and dielectric properties, laying the application foundation for the development of new-generation extreme environment thermal-electric management materials.

The harsh conditions on the high-altitude localities present considerable challenges for the development of architectural daylighting windows. Polyimide (PI) aerogels, with their notable mechanical strength, thermal stability, ultraviolet (UV) shielding capacity, and low thermal conductivity, emerge as a promising material candidate for such high-altitude fenestration applications. However, their currently limited optical transmittance hinders practical implementation in this context. Here, 2,2′-dimethylbenzidine (DMBZ) and 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) are used as monomers, and 1,3,5-Tris(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (TAB) as the crosslinker. The pyridine (PY)/triethylamine (TEA) catalysts are introduced to adjust pores for preparing high transmittance PI aerogels. The results show that as the proportion of TEA increases, the pore structure of the PI aerogel transforms from a compact morphology to a more porous one, while the average mesopore diameter significantly decreases, thereby reducing Rayleigh scattering. Under conditions using only TEA, the light transmittance at 750 nm is significantly increased to over 85%, while maintaining excellent UV protection. The thermal conductivity of this material is below 0.038 W m −1 K −1 , demonstrating excellent thermal insulation properties. Notably, the PI aerogel demonstrates an outstanding balance between mechanical robustness and ultra-low density, offering distinct advantages for weight-sensitive applications. This material presents an innovative solution for thermal management and UV shielding in daylighting windows, and also offers potential for applications such as lunar base glazing systems, polar structures, and agricultural greenhouses.

Organic pollution poses a serious threat to global water safety, while traditional treatment technologies suffer from low efficiency, high costs, and secondary pollution issues. This study successfully develops a highly efficient separation and photocatalytic degradation composite bismuth oxychloride@graphene oxide/polyimide (BiOCl@GO/PI) membrane by loading GO and BiOCl photocatalysts onto PI supporting membrane. The results show that this composite membrane achieves a rejection of 99.8% for methylene blue (MB) and 87.6% for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Under UV irradiation, the membrane exhibits a retention rate decline of only 6.8% after five cycles, with water flux stably maintaining at 605 L m−2h−1bar−1. Compared to dark conditions, it demonstrates remarkable flux recovery. This is attributed to the membrane’s excellent photocatalytic degradation activity under UV irradiation. After five degradation cycles, the degradation efficiency is decreased from 97.5 to 88.3%. Studies on radical scavengers indicate that UV irradiation generates free radicals, thereby conferring excellent catalytic activity to the membrane. Its unique synergistic effect between separation and photocatalysis endows it with outstanding self-cleaning performance. This research provides an innovative integrated solution for antibiotic pollution control, demonstrating significant potential for environmental applications.

With the global surge in polymeric material consumption, the exploitation of sustainable thermosetting composites with high mechanical performance, superior tribological properties and recyclability is urgently demanded. In this study, we synthesized a bio-based cross-linked polyimide (Bio-PI x ) via Schiff base reaction, and the prepared materials exhibit high thermomechanical properties, with a tensile strength of approximately 105.6 MPa and a Young's modulus of about 3.5 GPa. Moreover, it possesses recyclability, as evidenced by a monomer recovery rate of up to 90% under mild conditions through the cleavage and recombination of imine bonds (–CN–). Furthermore, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was selected as a solid lubricant to fabricate rGO-reinforced Bio-PI x (rGO@Bio-PI x ) composites. Results demonstrated that compared with pure Bio-PI x , the rGO@Bio-PI x composites not only maintained favorable mechanical stability but also exhibited significantly enhanced tribological properties with a 65.6% and 55.5% reduction in friction coefficient (COF) and volume wear rate ( W ), respectively. More importantly, rGO@Bio-PI x can be depolymerized into monomers at room temperature, achieving a 95% recovery rate for rGO. Notably, the rGO@Bio-PI x composite material can be reconstructed without requiring catalysts, and the recycled rGO@Bio-PI x (R-rGO@Bio-PI x ) retained its superior performance, demonstrating renewable lubricating property. This approach presents a promising pathway for developing high-performance thermoset polyimide composites for sustainable multifunctional applications. Highlights The bio-based cross-linked polyimide films exhibit excellent comprehensive performance and reprocessability. 90% monomer recovery is achieved under mild conditions via imine bond rearrangement. Composites show superior tribological properties and closed-loop recyclability.

Polyimide (PI) aerogels, as a representative type of organic aerogel, exhibit low density and high thermal stability; but the rigid structure and high shrinkage rate significantly limit their widespread applications. In this work, PI nanofiber (PINF) aerogels are successfully constructed through a combination of electrospinning and freeze-drying techniques. This innovative approach results in a mechanically robust nanofiber network that enhances the aerogels’ flexibility, compressive resilience, and significantly reduces volumetric shrinkage compared to traditional PI aerogels. Systematic evaluations reveal that the incorporation of nanofibers not only improves dimensional stability but also yields aerogels with high porosity and low density. Notably, the PINF-1.0 exhibits remarkable mechanical properties and a minimal residual strain after cyclic loading, indicating excellent fatigue resistance. Furthermore, PINF aerogels retain good thermal stability and insulation capabilities, emphasizing their potential as advanced materials for flexible thermal insulation solutions in energy-efficient technologies. This research significantly contributes to overcoming the limitations of traditional PI aerogels, paving the way for their broader practical applications.
