Superhydrophobic F-SiO2/tea polyphenol coating with high efficiency photothermal anti-icing and de-icing properties

Bochen Jiang,Yanhua Lei,Kai Sun,Qing Chen,Fei Zhang,Yan An,Yuliang Zhang,Yi Lin,Yuan Yuan,Tao Liu,Xiaofeng Li

Ice accumulation is an important challenge for daily life and industrial production. The photothermal effect offers a promising approach for active de-icing to address this issue. While the photothermal effect of polyphenol-metal ion complex is extensively studied in photothermal cancer therapy, its application in de-icing remains relatively unexplored. Herein, a durable photothermal superhydrophobic coating was designed by combining F-SiO 2 @Tp/Fe (Tea polyphenol-Fe 3+ ) nanoparticles and silicone resin using a one-step spray method. Due to the unique micro-nano structure, the resulting coating exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity, characterized by water contact angle (CA) of up to 159° and sliding angle (SA) of less than 2.5°. Additionally, the coating demonstrated reliable mechanical durability and chemical stability, as evidenced by its good performance in sandpaper abrasion, tape peeling and electrochemical corrosion tests. Moreover, owing to the efficient photothermal conversion of F-SiO 2 @Tp/Fe nanoparticles , surface temperature of the coating can quickly reach 81 ℃ under 1 kW/m 2 simulated sunlight irradiation (1 Sun). The prepared coating exhibits over three times delayed icing time under 1 sun irradiation at − 25 °C in comparison to the absence of light. And the coating also exhibits stable de-icing and defrosting cycle performance. These findings demonstrate effective synergistic effect of anti-icing and de-icing in the F-SiO 2 @Tp/Fe photothermal superhydrophobic coating, showcasing its promising application potential in practical engineering.

Metal polyphenol network/cerium oxide artificial enzymes therapeutic nanoplatform for MRI/CT-aided intestinal inflammation management

Zhichao Deng,Wenqi Ma,Chenguang Ding,Chaojun Wei,Bowen Gao,Yuanyuan Zhu,Yujie Zhang,Feng Wu,Mingxin Zhang,Runqing Li,Mingzhen Zhang

Intestinal inflammation, such as ulcerative colitis (UC), is a condition in which there is chronic or recurring inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract . Designing safe, effective, and multifunctional nanomedicines is one of the current difficulties in the treatment of UC. Here we developed a delivery nanosystem based on metal polyphenol network/cerium oxide artificial enzymes (MPN@CeOx) to manage UC and evaluate the severity of inflammation by MRI/CT imaging. MPN@CeOx was engineered by Fe 3+ and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) wrapped around CeOx. Increased levels of oxidative stress in the inflammatory lesion facilitated the release of Fe 3+ and EGCG from MPN and liberated CeOx. EGCG with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects plus CeOx with superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity effectively scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines to protect cells from oxidative damage . In addition, H 2 O 2 -responsive releasing of Fe 3+ at the site of inflammation and Ce elements in CeOx enable MRI/CT imaging of UC. In mice colitis models, oral administration of enteric-coated MPN@CeOx alleviated intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that MPN@CeOx ameliorated UC symptoms mainly through inflammation-related signaling pathways . MPN@CeOx with multilevel inflammation management and multimodal imaging capabilities represents an innovative diagnosis and treatment approach for UC.

Porous Carbon/ZnO Composites Synthesized Using an Environmentally Friendly Metal–Polyphenol Network for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Jin-Bo Cheng,Li-Peng Meng,Hai-Bo Zhao,Chun-Xia Zhao,Hui Li,Yuan-Peng Wu

Composite materials made of transition metals/metallic oxides and porous carbon stemming from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn tremendous attention within the field of electromagnetic wave absorption. However, the fabrication of most MOFs involves the use of toxic solvents and specially synthesized organic ligands; furthermore, high-pressure hydrothermal processes are commonly employed and are environmentally unfriendly and unsustainable. Herein, a Zn metal–polyphenol network (MPN) was developed by replacing organic ligands with biomass tannic acid at room temperature by using water and ethanol as solvents. The resulting MPN exhibited a microstructure and performance similar to those of MOFs. Subsequently, in situ pyrolysis of the Zn–tannic acid network was conducted to prepare porous carbon/ZnO (PC/ZnO) composites. The PC/ZnO composite pyrolyzed at 700 °C showed a strong reflection loss of −57.8 dB at a matching thickness of 3.5 mm, and a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 5.5 GHz was attained at 2.5 mm. The excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance can be ascribed to the occurrence of multiple scattering events due to the porous structure, the moderate resistance loss of the porous carbon network, and the strong dipolar and interfacial polarization losses due to the ZnO nanoparticles and defect carbon. This study provides a convenient, environmentally friendly, sustainable, and tunable approach to prepare excellent broadband electromagnetic wave absorbers.

Advanced ion separation in polyamide nanofiltration membranes via interfacial polymerization regulated by dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination

Yufan Hao,Bin Jiang,Na Yang,Longfei Zhang,Hao Jiang,Keting Li,Runjia Mu,Yongli Sun,Luhong Zhang

Developing advanced nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) for inorganic salt ions separation remains a significant challenge in the value-added process of water treatment. Herein, we engineered a highly permeable-selective TA/Fe/Ca/PA-p NFM through a novel strategy for the interfacial polymerization (IP) regulated by the dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination. Interestingly, the dynamic coordination occurred after the substrate surface was first modified with tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ and then coated with an aqueous phase solution containing piperazine (PIP) and Ca 2+ . In this process, the coordination competition between Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ for TA and the conversion of TA/Fe 3+ bis-complex into tris-complex were conducive to forming more uniform TA/Fe/Ca complex on the substrate surface. Meanwhile, TA can also perform Michael addition with PIP to control the diffusion of PIP to the organic phase. Following the IP reaction, the nascent TA/Fe/Ca/PA NFM underwent post-treatment in a sodium citrate (SC) solution to dissociate the TA/Fe/Ca complex by further applying the dynamic coordination, resulting in a crumpled and thinner separation layer with desirable surface properties. The optimized TA/Fe2/Ca/PA-p NFM exhibited a pure water permeability of 36.1 L m −2  h −1 ⋅bar −1 , nearly 2.4 times higher than that of the original PA NFM. Correspondingly, the Na 2 SO 4 rejection reached 99.4 % and its Cl − /SO 4 2− separation factor was 118.3. This outstanding permselectivity was mainly attributed to the decreased mass transfer resistance, the expanded effective permeability area, and the increased negative charge on the membrane surface. Additionally, the TA/Fe2/Ca/PA-p NFM was endowed with good operational stability, pressure resistance, and antifouling performance. This eco-friendly and cost-effective approach paves the way for fabricating high-performance NFMs and demonstrates the great potential of dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination in water treatment.

Redox-active polyphenol nanoparticles deprive endogenous glutathione of electrons for ROS generation and tumor chemodynamic therapy

Yifei Wang,Jia Wang,Yunke Jiao,Kangli Chen,Tianhao Chen,Xinping Wu,Xingwu Jiang,Wenbo Bu,Changsheng Liu,Xue Qu

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) is promising for cancer treatment. However, the intrinsic H 2 O 2 is deficient for CDT, and glutathione (GSH) eliminates ROS to protect tumor cells from ROS cytotoxicity. Herein, we propose a strategy to switch the electron flow direction of GSH for O 2 reduction and ROS generation rather than ROS clearance by using P(DA-Fc) nanoparticles , which are polymerized from ferrocenecarboxylic acid (Fc) coupled dopamine. P(DA-Fc) NPs with phenol-quinone conversion ability mimic NOX enzyme to deprive electrons from GSH to reduce O 2 for H 2 O 2 generation; the following •OH release can be triggered by Fc. Semiquinone radicals in P(DA-Fc) are significantly enhanced after GSH treatment, further demonstrated with strong single-electron reduction ability by calculation. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that P(DA-Fc) can consume intrinsic GSH to produce endogenous ROS; ROS generation strongly depends on GSH/pH level and eventually causes tumor cell death. Our work makes the first attempt to reverse the function of GSH from ROS scavenger to ROS producer, explores new roles of PDA-based nanomaterials in CDT beyond photothermal reagents and drug carriers, and provides a new strategy to improve the efficiency of CDT. Statement of Significance P(DA-Fc) nanoparticles performing tumor microenvironment response capacity and tumor reductive power utilize ability were fabricated for CDT tumor suppression. After endocytosis by tumor cells, P(DA-Fc) deprived GSH of electrons for H 2 O 2 and •OH release, mimicking the intrinsic ROS production conducted by NADPH, further inducing tumor cell necrosis and apoptosis. Our work makes the first attempt to reverse the function of GSH from ROS scavenger to producer, explores new functions of PDA-based nanomaterials in CDT beyond photothermal reagents and drug carriers, and provides a new strategy to improve CDT efficiency.

Inconsistency between polyphenol-enzyme binding interactions and enzyme inhibition: Galloyl moiety decreases amyloglucosidase inhibition of catechins

Jifan Zhang,Shuangshuang Li,Xuebo Liu,Lijun Sun

Inhibiting carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes has been considered as an effective approach for controlling starch digestion and postprandial blood glucose level. α-Amylase and amyloglucosidase (AMG) are commonly applied in analysis of starch digestion behaviour. Catechins have been shown with the inhibiting effects on α-amylase. However, the inhibitory activity of catechins against AMG needs to be further studied. Therefore, AMG inhibition of 8 catechins and the mechanisms were studied in this work through substrate depletion, inhibition kinetics, molecular docking, fluorescence quenching, differential scanning calorimetry, and isothermal titration calorimetry. The inhibitory activity of catechins with galloyl moiety (CGMs) was found to be lower than the corresponding catechins without the moiety (Cs). All catechins were anti-competitive inhibitors, indicating that they tended to bind with AMG-starch complex in the digestion system, rather than with AMG directly. Interestingly, CGMs had higher quenching effects on AMG fluorescence than Cs, due to the additional π-stacking between aromatic rings of GM and AMG fluorophores. Also, CGMs had a higher binding affinity to AMG, due to the tendency of GM to AMG active site, although the affinity was much weaker than that of starch to AMG. Besides, catechins did not affect AMG thermostability. Therefore, there was an inconsistency between catechins-AMG binding interactions and the enzyme inhibition because the predominant sites for catechins binding were the non-active sites on AMG-starch complex, rather than the enzyme active ones. Conclusively, inhibition mode should also be considered when evaluating the inhibitory activity of a polyphenol based on the polyphenol-enzyme binding affinity.

Scalable and universal polyphenol-mediated prussian blue nanocomposite membranes: Underliquid dual superlyophobicity and catalytic self-cleaning

Lulu Wang,Ruilong Zhang,Li Chen,Xiaohui Dai,Yongsheng Yan,Jianming Pan,Jiangdong Dai

Self-adaptive biomimetic superwetting membranes with distinctive underliquid dual superlyophobic surfaces showcase attractive features for the on-demand separation of multifarious oil/water systems. It yet remains a great challenge for introducing the catalytic function into the design of underliquid dual superlyophobic membranes, to strengthen self-cleaning ability. Herein, a polyphenol-mediated interfacial assembly strategy was proposed to construct multi-functional membranes with underliquid dual superlyophobicity and catalytic self-cleaning, through self-assembly of metal-tannic acid (Fe-TA) networks and then in-situ coordination growth of Prussia blue (PB) nanocrystals at the interface at room temperature. We found that the PB/Fe-TA nanocomposite coating can make hydrophilic and hydrophobic porous membranes, as well as smooth surfaces being underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic . The Fe-TA networks were favored for good growth of PB nanocrystals . Using quartz fiber (QF) membrane as the basement substrate, the PB/Fe-TA@QF nanocomposite membrane can separate light/heavy oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water/water-in-oil emulsions under gravity drive, with efficiencies above 99%. The PB/Fe-TA@QF nanocomposite membrane exhibits a superior degradation ability of carmine dye by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, with the removal ratio as high as 99.8% within 30 min and meanwhile has an excellent antifouling and catalytic self-cleaning performance after cycling emulsion separation. Excellent acid, alkali and salt toleration, as well as good repeatability, provide the potential for application in wastewater treatment . This research puts forward a green, versatile and scalable pathway to fabricate multifunctional superwetting membranes for various applications in the fields including the environment, energy and beyond.

Proteolytic activation and characterization of recombinant polyphenol oxidase from Rosa chinensis for efficient synthesis of theaflavins

Shengkai Luo,Yi Hou,Song-Qing Hu

Although the oxidation of tea polyphenols catalyzed by polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) is an attractive method for the synthesis of theaflavins (TFs), PPOs for synthesizing TFs were impure, and either not activated or activated by classical chemical methods. Herein, high pure PPO from Rosa chinensis (RcPPO) was cleanly and efficiently activated, and the MBP-RcPPO zymogen was successfully expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) with a high pure yield of 37.20 mg/L. Enzymatic activity of the RcPPO after proteolytic activation with trypsin in vitro increased to 5.52 times compared with the MBP-RcPPO zymogen, obtaining a 1625.00 U/L yield of activated enzyme with a specific activity of 480.77 U/mg for 25 mmol/L catechol, and could be enhanced by CuSO 4 , MgCl 2 , DMSO and ethanol. The MBP-RcPPO zymogen was specifically cleaved at the peptide bond of R (−5)-I (−4) for N-terminal, but not specifically cleaved at multiple cleavage sites for C-terminal during the activation with trypsin. RcPPO has been classified as tyrosinase with the obvious preference for diphenol compound substrates. Moreover, the four major TFs were synthesized from tea polyphenols extract by RcPPO with a higher efficiency than native PPO from Camellia sinensis , and the yield of TFs monomers could be furtherly improved using the corresponding purified tea polyphenols as substrate. The results indicated that activated RcPPO may serve as a promising biocatalyst for commercial-scale production of TFs.

Effects of high pressure synergistic enzymatic physical state and concentration on the denaturation of polyphenol oxidase

Jinghao Li,Jie Liu,Gengsheng Xiao,Lu Li,Yujuan Xu,Yuanshan Yu,Zhanhong Liang,Sai Xu,Lina Cheng

The synergistic effect of the initial state of the enzyme and pressure level on the denaturation of PPO has not been clear yet, but it significantly affects the application of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) in the enzyme-containing food processing. Solid (S-) and low/high concentration liquid (LL-/HL-) polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was used as the study object, and the microscopic conformation, molecular morphology and macroscopic activity of PPO under HHP treatments (100–400 MPa, 25 °C/30 min) were investigated by spectroscopic techniques. The results show that the initial state has a significant effect on the activity, structure, active force and substrate channel of PPO under pressure. The effec can be ranked as follows: physical state > concentration > pressure, S-PPO > LL-PPO > HL-PPO. High concentration has a weakening effect on the pressure denaturation of the PPO solution. Under high pressure, the α-helix and concentration factors play a crucial role in stabilizing the structure.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) based metal-polyphenol nanoformulations alleviates chondrocytes inflammation by modulating synovial macrophages polarization

Hong Wei,Jun Qin,Quanxin Huang,Zhiqiang Jin,Li Zheng,Jinmin Zhao,Zainen Qin

The activation of M1-type macrophages are dominant cells secreting proinflammatory present within the inflamed synovium in the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Increased oxidative stress, such as redundant ROS and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), are important factors in driving macrophages to polarize into M1 type. In this study, metal-polyphenol nanoformulations (Cu-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (Cu-EGCG) nanosheets) were synthesized through the coordination interaction between EGCG and copper ions, which possessed the antioxidant effect of EGCG and anti-inflammatory of Cu 2+ . Results showed that Cu-EGCG nanosheets were biocompatible and the Cu 2+ could be sustained released from the nanoparticles. Cu-EGCG nanosheets with multienzyme-like antioxidative activity could effectively scavenge the excessive intracellular ROS, leading to significantly decreased expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, which could reduce the expression of M1-type macrophages and exhibit excellent promotion on shifting macrophages to M2 phenotypes. Moreover, the secreted factor from the cell supernatant of Cu-EGCG treated macrophages exhibited anti-inflammatory potential in chondrocytes of inflamed synovial joints. This study suggests a novel strategy for OA therapy by using metal-polyphenol nanoformulations targeting macrophages.

Tea polyphenol radical scavenger loaded UV absorber for corrosion resistant and weathering resistant epoxy coating fabrication

Jinke Wang,Lingwei Ma,Xiaolun Ding,Haowen Xu,Yue Wang,Miao Zhao,Chenhao Ren,Dawei Zhang

In this study, a robust coating with enhanced corrosion resistant and weathering resistant properties was developed by incorporating novel UV resistant fillers into epoxy matrix. Tea polyphenol (TP) functioned as the free radical scavenger, which was encapsulated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles with UV absorption ability (MSN-TP) to obtain the UV resistant filler. With the incorporation of 2 wt% MSN-TP fillers in the epoxy matrix, the uniform distribution of MSN-TP nanoparticles could block the penetration of corrosive media and hence strengthening the barrier property of the coating. Moreover, the free radical scavenging ability of TP and the UV shielding effect of MSN functioned simultaneously to alleviate the weathering degradation of epoxy coating, which exhibited stabilized surface properties (including macro and micro morphology, FTIR , CLSM , gloss, and WCA) and good barrier performance during accelerated weathering exposure test. Such a robust EP/MSN-TP coating can considerably prolong the long-term protection during outdoor service life.

Injectable sodium alginate hydrogel loaded with plant polyphenol-functionalized silver nanoparticles for bacteria-infected wound healing

Qinsheng Hu,Yong Nie,Jun Xiang,Jinwei Xie,Haibo Si,Donghai Li,Shaoyun Zhang,Mei Li,Shishu Huang

A novel injectable hydrogel dressing (GA@AgNPs-SA) with long-term antimicrobial effect is developed that can accelerate the closure of bacteria-infected wounds. The hydrogel dressing was prepared by cross-linking sodium alginate molecular chains and gallic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (GA@AgNPs) via calcium ions to form a three-dimensional network. The hydrogel dressing demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and can achieve a sustainable release of silver ions, ensuring a long-term antibacterial activity and inhibiting biofilm formation. Moreover, an in vivo study demonstrates that the GA@AgNPs-SA hydrogel can effectively decrease the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α to alleviate the inflammatory response, and promote angiogenesis by upregulating CD31, α-SMA and VEGF expression, thus significantly accelerating the repair of infected wounds. Given these interesting properties, this antibacterial hydrogel has great potential for application in the clinical care of bacteria-infected wounds.
