Histidine functionalized MIL-53(Al) for lead(II) removal from aqueous solution

Jipeng Li,Yanzhi Sun,Yongmei Chen,Yang Tang,Junqing Pan,Pingyu Wan

In the present study, the preparation of a new MOF material His-MIL-53(Al) and its performance in the adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution were investigated. The original material MIL-53(Al) was directly grafted with histidine to obtain the modified MOF material His-MIL-53(Al). The results show that His-MIL-53(Al) has excellent adsorption performance for Pb(II), and the adsorption process is in accordance with the pseudo first-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 50.13 mg g−1, which is much larger than the adsorption capacity of the original material MIL-53(Al). The experimental results also show that the prepared material has good recoverability. Our work demonstrates the applications of His-MIL-53(Al) as a promising material in the adsorption of heavy metals.

Preparation and characterization of Al@TKX-50@NC composite microspheres by electrospray

Shu-ji Wang,Di Wang,Peng Chen,Shi Yan,Qing-jie Jiao,Xue-yong Guo

Micro-nano composite energetic materials have attracted extensive attention from researchers due to their excellent properties. Electrostatic spray drying, as an emerging composite material preparation technology, has an important impact on the assembly and energy release regulation of energetic materials. In this paper, NC with excellent mechanical properties was selected as the energetic binder. The uniform assembly of TKX-50 and Al was achieved by electrostatic spraying technology, and Al@TKX-50@NC micro-nano composite energetic material microspheres were prepared. The structure and composition of the composite were characterized, and its thermal decomposition kinetics and thermodynamics were calculated and analyzed. At the same time, its ignition and combustion performance were tested. It is found that the samples prepared by electrostatic spray are regular spherical, and the particle size is about 1–6 μm. Compared with the physical mixture samples, the Al@TKX-50@NC composite microspheres not only have a more complete oxidation reaction but also have better ignition and combustion performance. The results show that the electrostatic spray method is very effective in improving the energy release of composite energetic materials.

Synthesis of Al-modified hydrochar from corn stover for efficient phosphate removal

E. Shuang,Qiong Wang,Kuichuan Sheng,Ximing Zhang

The development of a simple and feasible process for preparing adsorbent materials to recover phosphorus resources would have significant environmental and social benefits. In this study, the Al-modified hydrochar was synthesized for phosphate adsorption by hydrothermal carbonization in one pot using corn stover as raw material. The results showed that phosphate adsorption mainly depended on the precipitation reaction between Al element and phosphate, in which the hydrochar carrier played a synergistic role. Al element through the hydrothermal treatment loaded on hydrochar expressed a much higher phosphate adsorption performance than that on pyrochar. When the concentration of AlCl 3 solution added in the hydrothermal process was 2 mol·L −1 and the hydrothermal temperature exceeded 180 ℃, Al element could transform from the amorphous state, which was less effective for phosphate adsorption, to Al 24 O 11 (OH) 44 Cl 6 crystal with high adsorption performance and could be more stably loaded onto the hydrochar. Although the preparation process was simple, the adsorption performance of hydrochar is good. The phosphate adsorption capacity and removal efficiency by the hydrochar prepared at 260 °C reached to 114.40 mg·g −1 and 76.27%, which could be further increased by adjusting the dosage of adsorbent and pH of water. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model could better describe the phosphate adsorption process on Al-loaded hydrochar. Phosphate was rapidly adsorbed on the surface of the hydrochar rich in mesoporous structure and bound to the surface-active sites. This study could transform agricultural waste into a functional hydrochar-based adsorbent and provide a low-cost, simple operation and efficient phosphate removal technology .

Fabrication and mechanism of La/Al bimetallic organic frameworks for phosphate removal

Zheng Zhu,Linlin Qin,Yulong Liu,Qiqi Zhang,Peng Cheng,Wenyan Liang

Lanthanum (La) is constantly used in phosphorus removal due to its high affinity with phosphate. Herein, a novel La/Al bimetallic organic framework was developed to improve the usage efficiency of La species. The effects of metal ratio, pH value and competitive anions were investigated, through which the adsorption mechanism was further explained. Results showed that when the doped La:Al ratio was 1:3, the absorbent (La 1 Al 3 -BTC) achieved the most excellent adsorption capacity of 210.3 mg P·g −1 and usage efficiency (P/metal ratio = 1.09). La 1 Al 3 -BTC can adapt to the wide pH range and multitudinous coexisting ions in real water, and its adsorption process was in accordance with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Surface morphology of materials transformed from rod-like crystal to amorphous structure as the increase of Al doping. La replaced some Al atoms and embedded in Al-BTC skeleton. The specific surface area raised from 9.27 m 2 ·g −1 of La-BTC to 257.01 m 2 ·g −1 of La 1 Al 3 -BTC. The main mechanism for the adsorption of phosphate was the inner-sphere complexation occurred in the La active sites. Electron migration between different metals enhanced the adsorption process. Density-function theory (DFT) calculation well matched the experimental phenomenon. Overall, the development of La 1 Al 3 -BTC presented new potential applications for enhanced phosphorus removal and provided new insights for the design of La-based adsorbents.

Combustion performance and mechanism of DAP-4/Al composites with WO3 nanoparticles

Jin-Qiang Zhou,Yi-Ming Wang,Hua Fang,Peng Deng,Jian-Xin Nie,Xue-Yong Guo,Rui Liu

The design and preparation of new high-energy composite DAP-4/Al is very important for the study of composite solid propellants. In this work, the combustion properties and reaction mechanism of DAP-4/Al composites doped with WO3 nanoparticles were studied. DAP-4/Al composites were prepared by different mass ratios. The combustion state, combustion time, pressure, pressurization rate and flame temperature of DAP-4/Al/WO3 with different mass ratios were monitored. The results show that the combustion performance of DAP-4/Al can be significantly improved under the catalysis of WO3. Compared with DAP-4/Al-5, the average combustion time of DAP-4/Al/W-4 is significantly reduced by ~ 70 ms, the average combustion pressure is increased by 654 KPa, and the average pressurization rate is increased by 0.22 MPa·s−1. Under the catalysis of WO3, the activated substances can react rapidly with H2dabco2+ and NH+ to produce CO2, CO, N2 and H2O. When the mass ratio is 20:80:2, the average maximum combustion heat of DAP-4/Al/W-4 is 8474 J/g, which is higher than 493 J/g of DAP-4/Al-5. The reaction mechanism of WO3 catalyzed DAP-4/Al system was further analyzed by TG-MS and XPS. This work provides a new idea for the future application of DAP-4/Al composites in solid propellants.

Arsenic removal from aqueous solution by chitosan loaded with Al/Ti elements

Guohua Li,Aimin Zhang,Xianjin Qi,Guizhi Yan,Gang Zhi

In the process of removing arsenic in an arsenic-containing aqueous solution, a large amount of harmful arsenic-containing waste is usually discharged. In this paper, a recyclable and environmentally friendly method of removing arsenic with Al/Ti-supported chitosan (ATC) was proposed. The results show that ATC has the best adsorption effect on arsenic at pH 8 at room temperature. In addition, the ratio of Al and Ti to chitosan (CB) affects the adsorption effect of ATC on arsenic. When Al: Ti: CB is 1:1:10, the removal rate of arsenic is as high as 99%. ATC can rapidly adsorb arsenic within 30 min. The adsorption kinetics shows that the adsorption of ATC on arsenic follows the joint action of physical adsorption and chemical precipitation. The adsorption isotherm shows that the adsorption process is multilayer adsorption. Finally, ATC has good recycling ability and is an efficient arsenic-removing agent in the treatment of arsenic-containing aqueous solutions. It shows great potential in the remediation of heavy metal-containing aqueous solutions.

Mesoporous Co-Al oxide nanosheets as highly efficient catalysts for CO oxidation

Jian Zhang,Liang Wang,Zhiyi Wu,Hai Wang,Bingsen Zhang,Feng-Shou Xiao

We report mesoporous Co-Al oxide nanosheets (Co x Al-Ns, where x denotes the Co/Al ratio in the samples) prepared by calcination of CoAl-hydrotalcite and subsequent alkaline treatment. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that the prepared Co-Al oxide nanosheets (Co x Al-Ns) are very thin (10–15 nm) and exhibit high mesoporosity (3–5 nm). Catalytic CO oxidation tests reveal that the Co x Al-Ns exhibit excellent catalytic performances at relatively low temperatures: for example, the Co 2.5 Al-Ns catalyst could achieve 99% CO conversion at −98°C. Kinetic studies and experimental investigations indicate that the high activity of the Co 2.5 Al-Ns sample is strongly related to the abundance of active sites associated with the large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. The Co 2.5 Al-Ns catalyst also achieves full conversion of CO in tests performed with a gas mixture simulating automobile exhaust gas at 200°C. After loading the Co 2.5 Al-Ns on a porous ceramic substrate, the obtained Co 2.5 Al-Ns/PC shows high activity and stability in CO oxidation process. These features are potentially important for future industrial applications of these catalysts.

Preparation and characterization of the Al/Fe2O3/RDX/NC nanocomposites by electrospray

Yang Hongtao,Liu Yunfei,Huang Haitao,Zhao Yu,Song Kuanguang,Wang Haiyang,Xie Wuxi,Cheng Yi,Fan Xuezhong

In this study, an advanced electrospray process was successfully used to fabricate aluminum nanopowders (Al)/iron oxide nanopowders (Fe 2 O 3 )/hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX)/nitrocellulose (NC) composite materials containing different RDX contents. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis indicates that the decomposition temperature of the RDX in the composition prepared by electrospray has a decrease of about 20 °C compared with the raw RDX. Combustion performances in air show that the RDX decreases combustion performance of nanothermites, and the combustion intensity decreases as the RDX content increases. Furthermore, the combustion cell test indicates that the maximum pressure peak has been greatly improved for the Al/Fe 2 O 3 /RDX/NC composites. The amount of released gas can be adjusted by the RDX content in Al/Fe 2 O 3 /RDX/NC composite.

Aqueous-phase reforming of phenol over hydrotalcite-derived Ni/Zn/Al catalysts

Xiangping Li,Jianguang Zhang,Ningge Xu,Guanyi Chen,Beibei Yan

With the depletion of non-regenerated energy and the increasing awareness of environmental protection, renewable energy developing has become a key subject of research. Hydrogen as a kind of clean energy has aroused much attention. In this study, hydrogen production from bio-oil derived phenolic compound in aqueous phase was studied. Hydrotalcite-derived Ni/Zn/Al catalysts with different metallic compositions were synthesised and screened for aqueous-phase reforming (APR) of phenol. The physiochemical characterisations of hydrotalcite-derived Ni/Zn/Al samples were detected by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and N 2 -sorption. In the calcined hydrotalcite-derived Ni 5.3 /Zn 2.7 /Al samples, most of the metal oxides exist in the form of rock solid and wurtzite type phase. In order to optimise the reaction condition of APR of phenol, the impacts of initial phenol concentration, reaction pressure and reaction temperature during the APR of phenol were investigated. It was found that increasing the concentration of phenol could enhance the side reaction and decrease the selectivity of hydrogen, while enhancing the reaction pressure was not favourable for hydrogen production. Moreover, proper reaction temperature was necessary for APR of phenol to produce hydrogen over hydrotalcite-derived Ni/Zn/Al catalysts.

Al/NiO nanocomposites for enhanced energetic properties: Preparation by polymer assembly method

Haoxue Dong,Min Xia,Cuixiao Wang,Guoping Li,Yunjun Luo

Al/NiO nanocomposites are prepared via co -assembly with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), and their enhanced energetic properties and combustion performance are studied. The results show that compared with physical mixing method, the structure of the Al/NiO nanocomposites with P4VP is more regular and compact, in which the grain sizes of Al and NiO nanoparticles are reduced from 56 nm and 29 nm to 51 nm and 25 nm, respectively. Therefore, their heat release, the maximum pressure of combustion, pressure rise rate of combustion and the maximum burning rate are greatly enhanced to 2190 J/g, 0.35 MPa, 260 MPa/s and 462 m/s, respectively, better than those obtained by physical mixing method. We further revealed that the reason for these improvements is that our method effectively suppresses the aggregation of nanoparticles, leading to uniform contact and sufficient interfacial area between the oxidant (NiO) and nano-fuel (Al), and thus significantly improving the reaction efficiency.

Taraxacum-like Mg-Al-Si@porous carbon nanoclusters for electrochemical rutin detection

Yalikun Nuerbiya,Mamat Xamxikamar,Li Yongtao,Hu Xun,Wang Ping,Hu Guangzhi

The authors describe a method for synthesis of a nanomaterial consisting of porous carbon encapsulated Mg-Al-Si alloy (denoted as Mg-Al-Si@PC) nanocluster. The nanocluster was synthesis by a solvothermal reaction, followed by high-temperature annealing. The nanoclusters were used as a novel immobilization platform for electrochemical sensing of rutin. The electrochemical behavior of rutin at a modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The modified electrode demonstrates a high electrocatalytic activity toward rutin oxidation at a relatively low working potential (0.6 vs. Ag/AgCl). Under optimal conditions, the sensor has a linear response in the 1–10 μM rutin concentration range, and a 0.01 μM lower detection limit (at an S/N ratio of 3). It was successfully applied to the quantification of rutin in pharmaceutical tablets, and satisfactory results were obtained. Furthermore, the results correspond with those with the standard method and with the amounts indicated by the producer, respectively. Schematic diagram of the Mg-Al-Si@PC nanocluster preparation process and electroanalysis mechanism.

Oxidation Resistance of Highly Porous Fe-Al Foams Prepared by Thermal Explosion

Cai Xiaoping,Liu Yanan,Wang Xiaohong,Jiao Xinyang,Wang Jianzhong,Akhtar Farid,Feng Peizhong

Open-cell Fe-Al intermetallic foams were successfully prepared by a simple and energy-saving thermal explosion (TE) process. The effects of the Fe/Al molar ratio (Fe-(40–50) at. pct Al) and thermal treatment temperature on the TE temperature profile, phase composition, pore characteristics, and oxidation resistance of the prepared foams were investigated. The results showed that the Al content significantly influenced the ignition ( T ig ) and combustion ( T c ) temperatures of the TE process; in particular, as the Al content decreased, T ig increased gradually from 623 °C to 636 °C and T c decreased from 1059 °C to 981 °C. FeAl was identified as the dominant phase in the thermally treated foams. The Fe-Al intermetallic foams displayed an open porosity of 60 vol pct, with pores connected with each other to form an open pore structure. The formation of the pores was attributed to the expansion of interparticle pores in the pressed body during the TE reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the Fe-50Al foam showed that the Al 2p and O 1s binding energies were 74.5 eV and at 531.4 eV, respectively. The formation of a surface alumina layer in the early stages of the oxidation process resulted in the parabolic oxidation rate law, and the Fe-50Al foams exhibited an excellent resistance to oxidation at 650 °C in air. These results suggest that the synthesized Fe-Al foams represent promising materials for applications involving an oxidizing environment and high temperatures.
