Fractal Kinetics and Surfactant Enhancement on Ca/Mg Selective Extraction from Large-Particle Steel Slag via Acetic Acid Leaching

Zhu Linchao,Ge Yuanyang,Wang Lin,Yuan Peiqing,Xu Xinru,Yang Jingyi

The leaching behavior of metallic elements in steel slag during acetic acid treatment is critical for its application in carbon sequestration. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterized the content and morphology of major elements (Ca, Mg, Fe) in steel slag. The acid leaching kinetics of 3.2–5.0 mm steel slag in acetic acid was investigated via the fractal shrinking core model, where the introduction of fractal dimension improved the accuracy of describing leaching kinetics for large particles. Results showed that Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ leaching was dominated by ash-layer diffusion, while Fe 3+ leaching was controlled by surface reactions. Based on the surface zeta potential of steel slag, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride (TMBAC) was used to neutralize the anion shield layer, reducing ash-layer diffusion resistance and enhancing Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ leaching rates. Optimization of reaction parameters yielded a maximum Ca 2+ leaching rate of 61.51%. This study provides a basis for enhanced approaches to utilizing steel slag in processes requiring metal extraction, such as carbon sequestration. Oxide Ion Conduction, Defect Chemistry, and the Conducting Mechanism in Ruddlesden–Popper La2–xMxBaIn2O7–0.5x (M = Ca, Sr, Ba)

Qin Cao,Ruiming Qiu,Libin Lei,Wenda Zhang,Sihao Deng,Jie Chen,Lunhua He,Jungu Xu

Tetragonal La2BaIn2O7 belongs to the stoichiometric n = 2 members of the Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) structure, with La3+ and Ba2+ cations ordered in the rock salt and octahedral layers, respectively. Herein, a series of alkaline-earth-metal-doped materials La2–xMxBaIn2O7–0.5x (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) were prepared by the traditional solid-state reaction method. The results revealed that the substitutions of Ca/Sr/Ba for La introduced oxygen vacancies and led to good oxide ion conduction, e.g., ∼1.21 × 10–3–1.38 × 10–2 S/cm within 600–900 °C for the specimen La1.7Ba1.3In2O6.85, which was more than 2 orders of magnitude higher than the parent material. However, both the parent and acceptor-doped La2BaIn2O7 showed very limited proton conductions. The energetics of defect formation and oxygen vacancy migrations in La2BaIn2O7-based materials was studied through the static lattice and molecular dynamics (MD) atomistic simulations based on the interatomic potential approach. The defect formation energy calculations for the electrons and holes in La2BaIn2O7 rationalized the experimentally observed pure ionic conduction under low pO2 and mixed ionic and p-type electronic conductions under high pO2, respectively. The MD simulations indicated two-dimensional oxygen vacancy migration within the perovskite slab for the acceptor-doped La2BaIn2O7.

Utilization of activated sludge and shell wastes for the preparation of Ca-loaded biochar for phosphate removal and recovery

Jing Li,Lu Cao,Bing Li,Haiming Huang,Wei Yu,Cairui Sun,Kehua Long,Brent Young

The activated sludge-based biochar modified by metals performs well for the phosphate adsorbent. The cost of the modification materials and the follow-up treatment of the spent adsorbents are significant limits for the large-scale application of the developed adsorbent. In this study, wasted egg shells and oyster shells, rich in calcium (Ca), were employed to load Ca onto the surface of the activated sludge-based biochar. The results revealed that different forms of Ca on egg shell-modified activated sludge biochar (ESB) and oyster shell modified activated sludge biochar (OSB) induced different adsorption performances. ESB had a greater phosphate adsorption capacity than OSB, where the maximum adsorption capacities were 154.18 mg/g and 129.03 mg/g, respectively. The saturated biochar could slowly release phosphate at different levels of pH; in fact, the phosphate release efficiency of ESB exceeded that of OSB. Economic analysis suggested that the cost of phosphate removal by ESB was $1.13 per kg, and by OSB was $1.22 per kg. The phosphate adsorption using the Ca-loaded biochar revealed good prospects for sustainable development with the advantages of the high efficiency of phosphate removal, low cost and resourceful employment of wastes.

Self-assembled photothermal conversion shell coating on the surface of CA/SP for photothermal bacteriostasis and rapid wound healing

Nan Wang,Baijie Cheng,Shanyi Guang,Hongyao Xu

Near-infrared light-triggered photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted extensive attention in the field of antibacterial research. This therapy confers advantages such as tissue penetration and acceleration of tissue regeneration . Tannic acid/Fe (TA/Fe), a green gold organic complex, displays excellent photothermal conversion and adhesion abilities. In this study, TA/Fe was assembled on surface of composite microspheres (CA/SP) based hydrogen bond interaction to prepare a novel microsphere dressing (CA/SP@TA/Fe) that shows well photothermal conversion capability and biocompatibility. After 5 cycles of NIR light irradiation , the microspheres still maintain a good warming rate. Under the synergistic effect of NIR, CA/SP@TA/Fe+NIR can greatly improve the antibacterial performance of CA/SP@TA/Fe, exhibiting inhibition rates for Streptococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are over 99 %. In addition, CA/SP@TA/Fe also showed excellent hemostatic ability and accelerated the total healing of cortical injury wounds, with wound closure reaching 92.58 % and 98.54 % on days 7 and 15 of healing. Therefore, CA/SP@TA/Fe microsphere dressings show potential for application as wound dressings.

Efficient production of biodiesel at low temperature using highly active bifunctional Na-Fe-Ca nanocatalyst from blast furnace waste

Yi-Tong Wang,Xiao-Man Wang,Di Gao,Fu-Ping Wang,Ya-Nan Zeng,Jun-Guo Li,Li-Qun Jiang,Qing Yu,Rui Ji,Le-Le Kang,Ya-Jun Wang,Zhen Fang

In this study, nanocatalysts for biodiesel production were prepared via wet impregnation of blast furnace dust (BFD) in Na 2 CO 3 (Na-BFD) and CaCO 3 (Ca-BFD) suspension solutions and calcination at 500 and 600 °C, respectively. Biodiesel yields of 100.0 wt% (Na-BFD 500 ) and 98.3 wt% (Ca-BFD 600 ) were achieved at 65 °C. Synthesized catalysts showed outstanding activity and recyclability, due to the transition of CaCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 to nanocrystals of NaFeO 2 (29.9 nm), Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (10.5 nm), CaO (100.1 nm) and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (50.0 nm). Na-BFD 500 achieved 95.8 wt% biodiesel yield with 16 cycles, whereas Ca-BFD 600 reached 94.1 wt% biodiesel yield with 7 cycles via magnetic separation. BFD containing convertible magnetic and active components (Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 ) was an ideal raw material to synthesize catalyst for biodiesel production with high catalytic efficiency and easy separation. The study provided a practical utilization of industrial solid waste for biodiesel production.

Enhanced strain of (Ba, Ca)(Ti, Zr, Sn)O3 ferroelectrics with multiphase polar nanoregions coexistence and BO6 octahedral rotation

Qiong Li,Hao Qian,Tianyang Zheng,Xiaoyuan Sun,Yunfei Liu,Yinong Lyu

The cation displacement closely related to the local symmetry and corner-connected oxygen octahedral rotation are the structural origin of macroscopic properties in ABO 3 perovskite oxides. This work describes in detail the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties in 0.78BT-0.12CT-0.1BZS ceramic, which achieves the enhanced strain of 0.19 % with a hysteresis of 6.56 %. The atomic level structure is revealed by aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (AC-STEM). The AC-STEM HAADF images reveal the coexisting of polar nanoregions with O and T symmetries. Such a microstructure has a lower energy barrier, facilitating dynamic polarization rotation flexibly under external stimuli. The AC-STEM ABF image reveals the existence of the BO 6 octahedral rotation, with rotation patterns of the a 0 b 0 c 0 and a - b + c - , and rotation angles are quantitatively measured. The BO 6 octahedral rotation and cation displacement are found to be consistent, the greater octahedral rotation with greater cation displacements. These results have important implications for understanding the structural origin of the excellent properties in ferroelectrics .

Sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) incorporated cellulose triacetate/cellulose acetate (CTA/CA)-based mixed matrix membranes for forward osmosis

Xiaogeng Lin,Yasan He,Yuting Zhang,Wanyin Yu,Tao Lian

The comparably low performance hinders the application of CTA based forward osmosis (FO) membranes. Herein, sulfonated-COFs incorporated CTA/CA membranes were designed to enhance the FO performance, taking advantages of the sulfonated COFs with high hydrophilicity, size exclusion and electrostatic repulsion to salt. Two COFs with different pore size were synthesized and sulfonated to prepare hydrophilic COF-SO 3 H. The COF-SO 3 H with different loading was then added into CTA/CA casting solution to fabricate incorporated membranes. Characterizations and FO tests revealed that an appropriate amount of COF-SO 3 H in the membrane matrix could increase membrane porosity, reduce structural parameter (S), bring more negative charges and improve hydrophilicity, leading to enhanced permeability, higher selectivity and suppressed internal concentration polarization. One of the synthesized COF-SO 3 H, named TATP-SO 3 H, had a pore size of 0.84 nm, ideal for both easy passthrough of water and high rejection to salt. The XPS results verified the existence of H-bonding between TATP-SO 3 H and CTA/CA. The membrane with 0.2 wt% TATP-SO 3 H loading had the best porosity and S, and achieved high flux (13.34 LMH) and selectivity ( J w /J s 6.26 L/g) in FO mode, both of which were 2–3 times of those of the neat CTA/CA membrane and the unfunctionalized-COFs incorporated membrane.

Enhanced adsorption of Eu(III) from wastewater using Solidago canadensis-derived biochar functionalized by Ca/Al-LDH and hydroxyapatite

Lijia Dong,Shengbo Li,Yefei Jin,Baowei Hu,Guodong Sheng

In this paper, CaAl hydrotalcite or hydroxyapatite decorated invasive plant ( Solidago canadensis )-derived biochar were synthesized by co-precipitation and high temperature pyrolysis method. The three composites and bare biochar were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and employed to remove Eu(III) from wastewater under a series of environmental conditions. The results indicated that the Eu(III) adsorption on BC@LDH@HAP was higher than that on BC, BC@LDH, and BC@HAP, and belonged to multi-layer adsorption, which was different from the monolayer adsorption of biochar. The adsorption could be fitted best by Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Eu(III) on BC@LDH@HAP was up to 714 mg/g at pH ~ 6. The characterization results suggested that this excellent adsorption of BC@LDH@HAP arose from the abundant P-, C-, O-containing functional groups rather than larger specific surface area. The spectra of XPS, FT-IR, and XRD uncovered that the adsorption mechanisms of Eu(III) on BC@LDH@HAP involved surface complexation, ion exchange, and precipitation. Moreover, the absorbed Eu(III) was formed into two precipitate induced by P-containing groups and carbonate groups. This research confirmed BC@LDH@HAP is a promising material for the removal of Eu(III) in wastewater.

Recyclable ZIF-9@CA-Fe3O4/RGO/cellulose composite membrane as efficient catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade methylene blue

Zhang Su-Feng,Li Hao,Hou Chen,Liu Li-Na,Wang Yang,Zhao Meng-Ke,Liang Chen

Abstract The treatment of dyes in wastewater is important to solve environmental problems. Advanced oxidation processes has been proved to be an effective treatment. In this work, a novel nanocomposite catalyst of ZIF-9@Fe 3 O 4 (cobalt-containing zeolitic imidazolate framework-9 coated Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite) modified reduced graphite oxide (RGO) was prepared for the first time and coded as ZIF-9@CA-Fe 3 O 4 /RGO. Then, ZIF-9@CA-Fe 3 O 4 /RGO was immobilized on a cellulose membrane to obtain a composite membrane, which was used as a composite catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate to degrade methylene blue (MB). The results demonstrated that the composite membrane could efficiently degrade approximately 96% of MB in 9 min without adjusting the initial pH and maintain good catalytic activity even after seven cycles. Furthermore, the composite membrane can be easily separated from the solution at the end of the reaction. This work indicates that the composite membrane has a broad application prospect in industrial applications. Graphic abstract

CO2 assisted Ca-based additives on pyrolytic characteristics and products from the co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and biomass

Yingying Cai,Aikelaimu Aihemaiti,Yiping Su,Yongqi Sun,Xin Sun,Heng Li,Kezhen Chen,Xuehua Shen,Feng Yan,Fan Qu,Heijin Chen,Zuotai Zhang

In this study, the CO 2 -looping system was firstly attempted to build for exploring the effect of calcium-based (Ca-based) additives on pyrolytic characteristics and products in co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) and biomass. Then, an innovation method for the consumption of CO 2 (CP CO2 ) evaluation was proposed and carried out in the CO 2 -looping system, in which it was evaluated based on the syngas volume and CO 2 proportion. The results revealed that the addition of CaO and Ca(OH) 2 could significantly improve CP CO2 by 21.2% in the co-pyrolysis of 500 ℃, while the CaCO 3 addition decreased the CP CO2 by 1.0%. Besides, the co-pyrolysis temperature more than 700 ℃ would play more significant role on the CP CO2 than the addition of Ca-based additives. Then the effect of Ca-based types on biochar characteristics was also identified accompanied by the bio-oil composition. Results showed that the CaO and Ca(OH) 2 additives not only increased biochar mass and pH, but also enhanced the dissolved organic carbon content and the variety of dissolved organic matter, and reduced the total HMs content. Meanwhile, it was 15 types of components that was identified in bio-oil by NIST mass spectral library, found that the intensity of heptadecanenitrile and estra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17 beta-ol was influenced by Ca-based additives. Moreover, the CaO and Ca(OH) 2 played important roles for improving the CP CO2 in the CO 2 -looping system, which was further verified by Fact Sage. Finally, the mechanism for the Ca-based additives on CP CO2 was proposed at different co-pyrolysis temperatures. These findings can widen paths for biochar application and development of CO 2 capture materials.

Co(II)-Based Metal-Organic Framework Derived CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs with Peroxidase-like Activity for Colorimetric Detection of Phenol

Wenjie Tan,Rui Xin,Jiarui Zhang,Lilin Yang,Min Jing,Fukun Ma,Jie Yang

Given the serious harm of toxic phenol to human health and the ecological environment, it is urgent to develop an efficient, low-cost and sensitive nanoenzyme-based method to monitor phenol. MOF-derived nanozyme has attracted wide interest due to its hollow polyhedra structure and porous micro-nano frameworks. However, it is still a great challenge to synthesize MOF-derived multimetal synergistic catalytic nanoenzymes in large quantities with low cost. Herein, we reported the synthetic strategy of porous hollow CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs with ZIF-67 as templates through a facile solvothermal reaction. The prepared trimetallic catalyst exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity to trigger the oxidative coupling reaction of 4-AAP and phenol in the presence of H2O2. The visual detection platform for phenol based on CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs is constructed, and satisfactory results are obtained. The Kmvalue for CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs (0.21 mM) is lower than that of HRP (0.43 mM) with TMB as the chromogenic substrate. Because of the synergistic effect of peroxidase-like activity and citric acid functionalization, the built colorimetric sensor displayed a good linear response to phenol from 1 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.163 μM (3σ/slope). Additionally, the CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs-based visual detection platform possesses high-chemical stability and excellent reusability, which can greatly improve economic benefits in practical applications. Keywords:metal organic framework;nanozyme;colorimetric detection;phenol

Synthesis of a novel acid-base bifunctional Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst for biodiesel application: Experimental and molecular simulation studies

Hewei Yu,Jichao Sun,Xiuxiu Chen,Bing Wang,Xiaohui Liang,Mingjie Gao,Hongyu Si

A novel acid-base bifunctional Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst has been synthesized successfully for biodiesel production from palm oil and acidified oil. The influence of synthetic factors on the catalytic activity of resulting Zn/Ca–Zr were discussed. Furthermore, the FAMEs yield was optimized to achieve the maximum value using the Taguchi approach. Results showed that the catalyst synthesized using a metal stoichiometric ratio of 4 : 4: 4, hydrothermal conditions, and activation temperature of 850 °C exhibited the best activity. The highest FAMEs yield was found to be 94.9% under the conditions of 5 wt% catalyst dosage, methanol/palm oil molar ratio of 20, and temperature of 170 °C at 3 h. The contribution percentage indicated that the methanol/oil molar ratio had the most significant effect on the FAMEs yield. Moreover, the Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst can catalyze the simultaneous esterification and transesterification of acidified palm oil with a 95.1% FAMEs yield and 93.3% acid reduction rate. And a 78.2% FAMEs yield can be maintained after four repeated cycles. Molecular simulations indicated the active site of Zn was more easily attacked by FFAs for esterification, while the active site of Ca was retained to adsorb methanol for transesterification, which explained the catalyst's acid-base bifunctional characteristics.
