Inter-fiber spacer-aided rawhide drying for skin-like and eco-friendly wearable platform of e-skin

Pu Haoliang,Xiao Hanzhong,Wang Yujia,Huang Xin,Shi Bi

The next-generation on-skin devices are expected to provide identical textural characteristics to skin for accomplishing comfortable long-term wearability. Cattle hide is mainly consisted of type I collagen, which is therefore an ideal collagenous-matrix platform for developing skin-like on-skin devices. However, the raw cattle hide has a high water content that leads to poor wearability. Herein, we developed the skin-like wearable (SW) platform via a brand-new inter-fiber spacer-aided (IFS-aided) drying of cattle hide, where an amphiphilic nonionic surfactant that was capable of thoroughly infiltrating into the 3D hierarchical network of collagen fibers (CFs) was employed to work as the inter-fiber spacer to avoid the sticking of CFs during drying. Moreover, the inter-fiber spacer was easily eluted after drying for obtaining the collagenous matrix with highly dispersed fiber structure. The as-developed SW-platform exhibited ideal wearability by exhibiting full-protein nature, outstanding softness (6.808 mm), exceptional water-vapor permeability (5950 g·m -2 ·d -1 ) and high thermal stability. The hierarchical fiber structure with sufficient inter-fiber space endowed the SW-platform with reversible cross-scale deformations of CFs at both the nanoscale and microscale, which demonstrated its promising application in developing the skin-like and eco-friendly e-skins with outstanding sensing capability and flexible display function. Enhancing the dynamic behavior of STF-Impregnated 3D E-glass fabric: A combined experimental and modeling approach

Abuzar Es’haghi Oskui,Elyas Haddadi

The influence of tailoring the carrier-fluid chemistry of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) on the dynamic response of three-dimensional (3D) E-glass fabric laminates is investigated. Silica-based STFs (50 wt%) were formulated in polyethylene glycol (PEG-400), and the PEG was further modified using diacid chemistry (oxalic and glutaric) to tune chain interactions and hydrogen-bonding density. Fabrics were impregnated via deep coating and the add-on was quantified. Rheology, surface morphology (SEM), yarn pull-out response, and low-velocity drop-weight compression were evaluated for 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-ply stacks. Post-critical viscosity was increased by PEG modification, and larger apparent particle agglomerates were observed within yarn interstices relative to the unmodified STF, indicating strengthened fabric–fluid–particle interlocking. During yarn pull-out, inter-yarn friction and energy absorption were increased; relative to untreated E-glass, energy absorption gains of ≈25.95%, 31.08%, and 61.38% were obtained for pure-STF, oxalic-modified, and glutaric-modified STF composites, respectively. Under compressive impact, STF impregnation reduced the compressive peak force (CPF) and extended the force-duration window; CPF ratios of ∼0.85, 0.76, and 0.65 (relative to untreated fabric) were measured for pure-, oxalic-, and glutaric-modified STFs, with further improvements as ply count increased, while peak-force time and impulse duration were systematically shifted to later times. To interpret the cushioning dynamics, a compact regression model combining a Gaussian peak term (capturing peak force and timing) with linear components was established; material-specific parameterizations were shown to reproduce measured force–time histories and to enable prediction across ply counts. Overall, scalable improvements in energy dissipation, inter-yarn friction, and impact cushioning were achieved through modest PEG-chemistry modifications, enabling tunable protection for diverse engineering and armor applications.

Biochemical and Functional Characterization of E. coli Aminopeptidase N: A New Role as a 6-Monoacetylmorphine Hydrolase

Xiabin Chen,Yishuang Li,Jianzhuang Yao,Xiaoxuan Li,Hualing Li,Zelin Wu,Qi Hu,Nuo Xu,Tingjun Hou,Jiye Wang,Shurong Hou

6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), a primary active metabolite of heroin that reaches the human brain, plays a crucial role in producing heroin-associated physiological and lethal effects. Therefore, 6-MAM has emerged as a key target for alleviating the adverse consequences of heroin abuse. In this study, the proposed 6-MAM hydrolaseE. coliaminopeptidase N (eAPN) was recombinantly produced, and its biochemical and functional profiles were investigated. eAPN’s biochemical properties, with respect to pH, metal ions, and temperature, and catalytic functions toward peptidase substrates and 6-MAM were thoroughly examined. Extensive experiments reveal that incorporation of an N-terminal His-tag notably affects eAPN’s aminopeptidase activity. This cost-effective recombinant eAPN exhibits favorable thermostability and optimal activity at pH 7.5. Kinetic analysis toward peptidase substrates reveals that eAPN preferentially cleaves peptides following amino acid residues in the order of Ala > Arg >> Met, Gly > Leu > Pro, indicating a preference for small or basic amino acid residues as substrates. Computational and experimental studies have, for the first time, discovered that eAPN is capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of heroin and 6-MAM, which has shed light on its functional versatility and potential applications. This work elucidates the biochemical properties of eAPN and expands its catalytic functions, thereby laying the groundwork for a deep understanding and further reengineering of eAPN to enhance its activity toward 6-MAM for heroin detoxification.

Asymmetric Reduction of (E/Z)-citral to (R)-Citronellal by a Cyanobacterial-Derived Old Yellow Enzyme, CtOYE

Wu S. J.,Chen F.,Ma X. J.,Sun S. Y.,Yan H. D.,Li T. T.,Qiu L. Q.

( R )-citronellal is a key intermediate in the synthesis of L-menthol, one of the world’s three most important spices. It can be obtained by asymmetric reduction of ( E / Z )-citral using old yellow enzymes (OYEs), but catalysis by the wild-type enzyme suffers from poor enantioselectivity as well as low efficient conversion. A protein-directed evolution technique was used to enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of Ct OYE from Chroococcidiopsis thermalis . Upon the sequence alignment and molecular docking results, two amino acid residues at positions 103 and 351 were selected as saturation mutation sites. Finally, three single substitution variants of Ct OYE-W103E, Ct OYE-W103M, Ct OYE-W103P with improved enantioselectivity ( ee > 99%) and moderate conversion (>71%), and one double substitution variant Ct OYE-Y351Q/W103E with high enantioselectivity ( ee > 99%) and high conversion (83.2%) for reduction of ( E / Z )-citral were obtained.

Magnolol inhibits the resistance of ESBLs E. coli to fourth-generation cephalosporins in vitro and in vivo

Yin-Chao Tong,Huan Lin,Yang Yang,Zhi-fu Zhou,Yi-Ning Zhang,Juan Wang,Wu-ren Ma,Yongsheng Wang,Wei-Min Zhang,Su-Zhu Qing

Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) infection is attracting increasing attention, especially superbug infections. As a result, finding ways to reduce AMR is essential. For the time being, natural compound therapy for reducing AMR is an ideal choice. Purpose This study aims to investigate the mechanism of magnolol reducing the AMR of E. coli in vitro and vivo . Methods The morphology and function of E. coli under magnolol treatment were assessed using a scanning electron microscope, qPCR, RNA-seq, and other methods. Moreover, the in vivo treatment effects of magnolol combined with antibiotics were evaluated by HE and IHC staining. Results In this study, we found that magnolol reduced the resistance of ESBL E. coli to the fourth-generation cephalosporin in vitro via two main mechanisms. Firstly, magnolol disrupts iron ion metabolism by increasing environmental iron uptake significantly (P ≤ 0.01), leading to a significant increase in intracellular ROS (P ≤ 0.01) and membrane damage. Secondly, magnolol significantly inhibits the relative mRNA expression of blaCTX-M-1 (P ≤ 0.01) and the CTX-M-1 enzyme activity in ESBL E. coli. Furthermore, we find that magnolol can inhibit ESBL E. coli in vivo by significantly reducing the TLR4-NFκB p65 pathway ( P ≤ 0.01). Conclusion In a word, our results indicate that magnolol is a natural antibacterial adjuvant with potent inhibitory activity against bacterial resistance and exerts this activity through multiple pathways, which has particular significance for the further study of the AMR mechanism.

A Stretchable, Sweat-Resistant Electrophoretic Display Device Driven by Human-Safe Voltage for Smart E-Textile Application

Simu Zhu,Feng Xiong,Yifan Gu,Ting Wang,Hao Lu,Zhiguang Qiu,Bo-Ru Yang,Shaozhi Deng

The demand for wearable display devices capable of real-time information collection is growing rapidly. Among them, electrophoretic display (EPD) shows features of ultra-low power consumption and high readability in sunlight, making them particularly suitable for wearable applications. However, due to high driving voltage and susceptibility to salt, few wearable EPD devices are reported so far. To address this, a stretchable EPD compatible with textiles is fabricated based on waterborne polyurethane. The device exhibits great performance to resist water and sweat, achieving a whiteness of 35 (Y in CIE XYZ) and a contrast ratio of 13.5 at a driving voltage of 30 V. Benefit from the device's excellent bistability and flexibility, there is no degrading to its optoelectronic performance after bending, twisting or stretching. For demonstration, an 8 × 8 matrix display is realized, showcasing that this process is suitable for wearable textile display applications.

Renewable redox couple system for sustainable precious metal recycling from e-waste via halide-regulated potential inversion

Qingming Song,Honghuai Sun,Lingen Zhang,Zhenming Xu

Precious metal (PM) retrievement from e-waste is of great significance for reducing virgin mining activity and promoting rare resource sustainability . However, current PM recycling methods rely mainly on caustic aqua regia or unstable sulfur-based ligand, which has caused severe environmental damage and process inefficiency. Here, we propose an environmentally friendly halide-regulated strategy, utilizing milder and renewable oxidant—cupric/ferric ion for facile PM dissolution. This is realized by the synergistic effect of enhanced oxidizing ability of Cu(II) and reduced oxidation potential of PM with halide addition. Electrochemical tests and leaching experiment results show that Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox potential experiences great change with bromide, increasing from 0.4 to 0.75 V. Fast corrosion feature was observed for Au in Cu(II)/Fe(III)-Br - and Pd in Cu(II)/Fe(III)-Cl - , and it can be accelerated by increasing oxidant and halide concentration. Our proposed strategy outperforms traditional methods with stable and fast dissolution, where 2.5 mol/L Br - is appropriate for Au dissolution. Moreover, selective dissolution of base metal, Pd/Ag, and Au can be achieved via ligand alteration and be further combined with electrodeposition technique for multi metal recovery and oxidant regeneration. This halide-regulated strategy can lead PM recycling from pollutive status towards environmentally friendly road.

Selective and Sustainable Recovery of High-Value Metals from e-Waste via a Glucose-Mediated Hydrothermal Process

Zhihao Sun,Yuxuan Du,Jinfeng Wang,Ran Yin,Gong Zhang,Jixian Wu,Tianyang Lu,Yusen Chen,Zhan Qu,Hongqiang Ren

The rapid fabrication of artificial intelligence-based hardware worldwide is intensifying the electronic waste (e-waste) crisis, threatening ecosystems and demanding urgent, sustainable solutions for metal recovery. Herein, a glucose-mediated hydrothermal strategy is reported for the efficient reclamation of high-value metals from complex e-waste. Glucose functions as a multifunctional ligand, establishing a specific pathway for metal–organic coordination, enabling selective metal recovery. By precisely regulating reaction kinetics and thermodynamic parameters, the proposed metal–ligand hydrothermal strategy exhibited exceptional recovery of 99.16% for iron (Fe) and 98.67% for silver (Ag), while concurrently converting toxic metals such as lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) into value-added byproducts without any energy-intensive purification steps. Notably, the process was operated within a closed-loop system. All residual solutions were recycled, eliminating secondary wastewater discharge and enabling the use of the entire components present in the resource. Density functional theory calculations and radial distribution function analysis further revealed the molecular basis of selectivity: Fe(III) preferentially formed bidentate chelates with the aldehyde and hydroxyl groups of glucose, a process complemented by electrostatic interactions that promote rapid nucleation and precipitation. In contrast, other metal ions, Ag(I) and Pb(II), are coordinated primarily via single oxygen sites. Technoeconomic analysis confirmed the economic viability of the process, demonstrating a net profit of $2460 per ton of processed e-waste. This study provides a sustainable and economically compelling waste-to-resource platform guided by molecular-level insights into selective coordination chemistry for advanced e-waste recycling.

Star-shaped polymer of β‑cyclodextrin-g-vitamin E TPGS for doxorubicin delivery and multidrug resistance inhibition

Conglian Yang,Yuting Qin,Kun Tu,Chenfeng Xu,Zhen Li,Zhiping Zhang

Multidrug resistance (MDR) remains as an obstacle for effective cancer treatment. Herein, we developed a novel and efficient nanomedicine by virtue of the carrier characters and MDR inhibition effects of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS). A series of star-shaped polymers CD-g-TPGS with different TPGS substitution degree were synthesized for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery, where β-CD was identified as a core and TPGS as branches. These star polymers can self-assemble into nanoparticles with DOX . These nanoparticles showed no significant differences in size, zeta potential and morphology except for in vitro stability. They demonstrated good biocompatibility and enhanced cellular uptake in both drug sensitive and resistant cancer cells. Notably, the nanoparticles exhibited superiority of cytotoxicity in drug resistant cancer cells against free DOX . In vivo antitumor effect also demonstrated the improved cancer inhibition effect. This work suggests that star-shaped polymers CD-g-TPGS are promising drug carriers to overcome MDR in cancer treatment.

Conjugation of Candida rugosa lipase with hydrophobic polymer improves esterification activity of vitamin E in nonaqueous solvent

Xiaoyun Hou,Qinghong Shi

We described a novel polymer-lipase conjugate for high-efficient esterification of vitamin E using vitamin E and succinic anhydride as the substrates in nonaqueous media. In this work, the monomer, N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), was grafted onto Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) to synthesize poly(NIPAM) ( p NIPAM)-CRL conjugate by atom transfer radical polymerization via the initiator coupled on the surface of CRL. The result showed that the catalytic efficiencies of p NIPAM-CRL conjugates (19.5 – 30.3 L·s -1 ·mmol -1 ) were at least 7-times higher than that of free CRL (2.36 L·s -1 ·mmol -1 ) in DMSO. It was attributed to a significant increase in K cat of the conjugates in nonaqueous media. The synthesis catalyzed by p NIPAM-CRL conjugates was influenced by the length and density of the grafted polymer, water content, solvent polarity and molar ratio of the substrates. In the optimal synthesis, the reaction time was shortened at least 7-times, and yields of vitamin E succinate by p NIPAM- g -CRL and free CRL were obtained to be 75.4% and 10.1 % at 55°C after the reaction for 1.5 h. The result argued that conjugation with p NIPAM induced conformational change of the lid on CRL based on hydrophobic interaction, thus providing a higher possibility of catalysis-favorable conformation on CRL in nonaqueous media. Moreover, p NIPAM conjugation improved the thermal stability of CRL greatly, and the stability improved further with an increase of chain length of p NIPAM. At the optimal reaction conditions (55°C and 1.5 h), p NIPAM- g -CRL also exhibited good reusability in the enzymatic synthesis of vitamin E succinate and kept ∼ 70% of its catalytic activity after ten consecutive cycles. The research demonstrated that p NIPAM- g -CRL was a more competitive biocatalyst in the enzymatic synthesis of vitamin E succinate and exhibited good application potential under harsh industrial conditions.

Selective and Efficient Gold Extraction from E-Waste by Pyrrolidinium-Based Ionic Liquids with Various N-Substituents

Xiaoxia Liu,Yangyang Wang,Ronghao Liu,Ping Lv,Wenfeng Xue,Jinxin Guo,Huiying Wei,Yanzhao Yang

With environmental problems and a shortage of resources, it is urgent to recover gold from electronic waste (e-waste). Meanwhile, it is necessary to explore the relationships between the structures and extraction performances of ionic liquids (ILs) to further improve the extraction capacities of ILs for gold. Herein, three pyrrolidinium-based ILs with various N-substituents were synthesized for solvent-free extraction of Au(III). The three pyrrolidinium-based ILs exhibited ultrahigh extraction capacities for Au(III) with the order of [Pyr-EA][NTf2] (524.6 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-Bu][NTf2] (457.3 mg·g–1) > [Pyr-C2OC2][NTf2] (403.5 mg·g–1). The effects of N-substituents on extraction performances were quantitatively investigated by electrostatic potential (ESP) and quantitative NMR. Among them, the ester group (−COOR) is the most beneficial to the extraction process, which is associated with an increased ESP value and boosted hydrophobicity. Notably, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] displayed outstanding selectivity in multimetal solutions; especially, it could selectively and efficiently extract Au(III) from the actual CPU. Furthermore, [Pyr-EA][NTf2] possesses significant reuseability and can maintain superior extraction efficiency of 84.3% after five cycles. These excellent performances together with low cost ($0.44·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) and considerable profit ($29.72·g–1 [Pyr-EA][NTf2]) confirmed that [Pyr-EA][NTf2] is a promising prospect for sustainable recovery of gold from e-waste.
