Functional polystyrene (PS) microspheres with unique size and high monodispersity play an important role in biomedical and organic synthesis. However, developing a facile strategy to prepare PS microspheres with predictable size and excellent stability remains challenging. In this study, a facile strategy is developed to prepare PS microspheres, in which sufficient sulfate radicals could be produced to initiate polymerization even without inert gas purging. 0.03 to 3 μm PS microspheres with coefficients of variation (CV) values less than 5% are prepared using optimized dispersion polymerization and emulsion polymerization. The effects of reaction conditions on the size and morphology of microspheres are studied systematically. Emulsion polymerization is utilized to prepare microsphere size less than 600 nm, and then the microspheres with size of 30 to 300 nm are fabricated by varying the copolymerization monomer concentration. Additionally, the reaction is scaled up 400 times (yield: 85%) in a 20 L reactor to further verify the large-scale production ability of PS microspheres (CV ≤ 2%). To broaden the functionality of microspheres, microspheres with variable fluorescence intensity are prepared. The results not only provide a facile strategy for the production of narrow size distribution and high-yield PS microspheres but also expand industrialization and downstream applications.

Developing air purification systems with stability and reusability under harsh conditions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we designed a polyimide (PI) molecular structure and incorporated MXene nanosheets rich in active surface groups (–O, –OH, and –F) into the PI matrix using moisture-assisted electrospinning technology. This approach successfully constructed a biomimetic, wavy, and fluffy fiber structure. The results demonstrated that the MXene-modified PI fiber membrane exhibited outstanding superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 151.74°), alongside superior mechanical properties (tensile strength of > 9 MPa), and thermal stability (decomposition temperature of > 500°C). The gradient pore size distribution effectively retained and captured PM while reducing air flow resistance. The fabricated filter achieved a removal efficiency of 99.99% for PM 2.5 with a low pressure drop (29.13 Pa), far lower than the 120.60 Pa pressure drop of PI OPA filters. Furthermore, the filter maintained stable filtration efficiency after five washing cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability.

Phthalate plasticizers are the most commonly used plasticizers for soft PVC, but their composite materials are highly prone to cracking in low-temperature environments, leading to significant economic losses. Enhancing the cold resistance of plasticizers may be key to solving this issue. Therefore, this study employs dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as the primary plasticizer and synergistically blends it with the synthesized cold-resistant plasticizers dioctyl adipate (DOA) and dioctyl sebacate (DOS). Experimental results demonstrate that the addition of DOA and DOS significantly improves the low-temperature toughness of PVC/DOP composite films. For instance, at −20°C, the elongation at break of PVC/DOP/DOA and PVC/DOP/DOS increased by 48% and 42%, respectively, compared to PVC/DOP. Similarly, the glass transition temperatures of the compounding film are also higher than those of PVC/DOP. Migration resistance tests indicate that blending DOP with DOA or DOS can slow the migration rate of both DOS and DOA within the resin. Additionally, low-temperature in situ Raman spectroscopy is employed to investigate structural changes in DOP/PVC films under extreme cold conditions. DOP gradually precipitates from the matrix phase and forms crystalline structures on the film surface under low temperatures. This leads to PVC plasticization failure, resulting in brittle fracture.

This study introduces high-performance self-lubricating epoxy composites incorporating bioinspired silica microcapsules. Fabricated via optimized oil-in-water emulsion, the microcapsules (8–22 μm diameter, 0.5–0.6 μm shell thickness) demonstrate excellent thermal stability (200°C for 1 h) and high polyalphaolefin (PAO) encapsulation efficiency. At 5.0 wt% loading, the composite achieves outstanding tribological performance with an 89% reduction in both friction coefficient (from 0.56 to 0.08) and wear rate (from 120 to 13 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm) under 5 N load, while retaining 85% of compressive strength. Microstructural analysis confirms uniform microcapsule dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion with the epoxy matrix. The composite exhibits a unique stress-responsive lubrication mechanism where mechanical triggers cause microcapsule rupture, releasing PAO to form continuous lubricating films combined with silica fragments. This dynamic process is quantitatively described by a conceptual kinetic framework model that accounts for stress-dependent rupture and lubricant entrainment. The excellent balance of tribological properties and mechanical integrity demonstrated under laboratory conditions makes these composites promising candidates for further investigation toward demanding applications.

Chromium (Cr) ions, as a critical pollutant in industrial wastewater, posed a persistent challenge for research aiming to realize their efficient removal alongside detoxification. Here, we presented a novel cellulose-based nanoadsorbent, PDA@CNCs/FeS, obtained via dopamine (DA) self-polymerization onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and subsequent FeS nanoparticle immobilization. Experimental results demonstrated that the adsorbent achieved a high removal capacity of 837.9 mg/g for Cr(VI) and exhibited efficient removal under mildly acidic conditions (pH 5.0), which outperformed the majority of cellulose-based adsorbents. The adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm model and fitted well with the Pseudo-second-order kinetic. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the adsorption mechanism, which revealed that electrostatic attraction was involved in Cr(VI) removal, while the synergistic effect between reductive PDA and FeS on the nanoadsorbents facilitated the detoxification of toxic Cr(VI) to less harmful Cr(III). Nearly 70% of the adsorbed Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), with a final ratio of 31.4%:68.6% for Cr(VI):Cr(III). Furthermore, PDA@CNCs/FeS also demonstrated excellent reusability, with over 80% of its Cr(VI) removal efficiency remaining after four adsorption–desorption cycles; these findings implied that PDA@CNCs/FeS held great promise as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) remediation in water treatment.

The highly efficient air flotation hydrocyclone separation technology has been gradually promoted and applied. However, the performance of flocculant reported in the literature needs improvement. In this study, a novel flocculant was synthesized using poly[N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacry] (PDPM) and polyether monoamine (PMA) as the main raw materials. The synthesis conditions of the flocculant were optimized based on the oil removal rate. It was found that when PMA M-2095 was used, the resulting product, Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095, exhibited the best flotation-flocculation oil removal performance. At a dosage of 20 mg/L and a treatment time of 7 min, the oil removal rate of Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095 reached 90.63%, which was 31.7% higher than that of the reported flocculant. Mechanistic investigations, including measurements of surface tension, interfacial tension, zeta potential, and interfacial elastic modulus, as well as oil-coated bubble experiments, revealed that Cl-0.4-P-0.2-2095 adsorbs onto the surfaces of bubbles and oil droplets. This adsorption enhances the collision and adhesion efficiency between bubbles and oil droplets, thereby improving the flotation-flocculation oil removal performance. This study provides a novel treatment agent for the efficient treatment of produced water from offshore oilfields.

Although epoxy resins (EP) have been widely used in many fields, performing halogen-free flame-retardant modification on them while improving their mechanical properties still holds significant research value. Herein, a halogen-free P/N/B-containing modifier (DVB) was synthesized via mild nucleophilic substitution, esterification, and Schiff base reactions using diphenylphosphinyl chloride, vanilline, phenylboronic acid, and 3-amino-1,2-propanediol as precursors. Its efficacy on bisphenol A epoxy resin/4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane thermosets was systematically evaluated, with comparisons to a phosphorus-only intermediate (DV). At 3 wt% DVB loading (0.18 wt% P content), the modified EP exhibited a limiting oxygen index of 28.5% and achieved UL-94 V-0 classification. Relative to pristine EP, EP/5% DVB demonstrated a reduction of 41.8% in peak heat release rate, 27.7% in total heat release, and 30.0% in total smoke production, outperforming EP/5% DV (17.8%, 15.8%, and 12.2% reductions, respectively). Furthermore, EP/DVB thermosets displayed maximal improvements of 37.0% in flexural strength and 59.4% in impact strength, coupled with a glass transition temperature retention rate of 98%. Collectively, DVB presents considerable application potential for synergistically enhancing the flame retardancy and mechanical performance of epoxy resins.

In contemporary agriculture, the excessive use of herbicides has raised significant environmental apprehensions. To address these environmental concerns, researchers have turned to the encapsulation of herbicides within nanocarriers as a promising strategy. In this study, alginate/chitosan nanoparticles (ALG/CS NPs) were designed as nanocarriers to encapsulate atrazine (AT). The ALG/CS NPs loaded AT herbicide nanoparticles (AT/ALG/CS NPs) showed an encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the active ingredient above 50% under the rotation speed of 30,000 rpm by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The ALG/CS NPs and AT/ALG/CS NPs were characterized by using dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which confirmed the formation of nanoparticles. The assessment of both pre- and post-emergence herbicidal activity against Bidens pilosa L. illustrated a better weed control effect of AT/ALG/CS NPs than AT solutions. Contact angle and liquid holding capacity analyzed confirmed a better adhesive capacity performance of AT/ALG/CS NPs. This study provided a viable and environmentally benign alternative for herbicide delivery, contributing to the advancement of sustainable agricultural practices.

Polyurea coatings with high mechanical performance hold tremendous promise for mechanical protection. However, high-performance neat polyurea remains a significant challenge, and the interrelationships among synthesis, microstructure, and properties are poorly understood, thereby limiting its applications and potential for further enhancement. This study synthesized a neat polyurea using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polyetheramine J2000, and J230 as the only three basic reactants, by employing a two-step process that features the secondary addition of IPDI. Extensive measurements revealed superior properties, including a tensile strength of 52 ± 3 MPa, elongation at break of 1807% ± 100%, thermal decomposition temperature of 300°C, and glass transition temperature of −56°C, along with remarkable resistance to impact and corrosion. Molecular analysis and microstructure observation unveiled that these superior properties likely originated from a linear long-chain structure, enhanced by the synergistic effects of ultra-short-range microphase separation and lateral crosslinking by trimers. Simultaneously, further optimization was achieved by controlling the fraction of short ring chains and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. High-performance polyurea coatings show great potential for aerospace and lightweight protection. Neat polyurea with excellent mechanical properties provides a solid foundation for further applications and modifications.

Polypropylene (PP) is extensively implemented in electronic equipment and power systems owing to its superior performance, such as high breakdown strength ( E b ), low dielectric loss (tan δ ), and outstanding self-healing capability. However, its low dielectric constant ( ε r ) and restricted energy density ( U e ) obstruct the miniaturization and integration of dielectric capacitors. To address these limitations, PP/PMMA/PP-g-MAH dielectric blend films were prepared via the melt blending and hot-pressing process. The transesterification reaction between the pendant anhydride groups of PP-g-MAH and the ester groups of PMMA forms ester bonds, which reduces the interfacial free energy and, in turn, significantly improves the compatibility between PP and PMMA. The blend film containing 4 wt% PP-g-MAH exhibits a high U e of 7.53 J/cm 3 at 502 MV/m, with an excellent charge–discharge efficiency ( η ) of 97.8%. This work presents a feasible strategy for developing all-organic polypropylene-based dielectric film with superior energy storage performance.

Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) suffers from slow crystallization rate, inadequate rigidity, and poor optical properties. Adding nucleating agents offers a promising solution; therefore, developing new nucleating agents is significant. In this study, four novel allyl sorbitol nucleating agents 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(benzylidene)-1-allyl-sorbitol (NA-B), 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(4-methylbenzylidene)-1-allyl-sorbitol (NA-BMe), 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(3,4-dimethyldibenzylidene)-1-allyl-sorbitol (NA-B2Me), and 1,3:2,4-bis-O-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-1-allyl-sorbitol (NA-BCl) were synthesized and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of nucleated iPP showed that all four compounds were efficient α-nucleating agents, significantly reduced spherulite size, and accelerated crystallization. Mechanical tests exhibited that all nucleating agents enhanced the rigidity of iPP. Specifically, NA-B2Me improved the tensile strength by 16.8%, while NA-BMe enhanced the flexural modulus by 26.9%. These agents also effectively reduced haze, with NA-B2Me reducing by 65.4%. Isothermal crystallization kinetics analysis revealed a decrease in the Avrami exponent for nucleated iPP, supporting the transition toward heterogeneous nucleation induced by the nucleating agents. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed binding energies ranging from 50 to 55 kcal/mol between the nucleating agents and iPP, indicating adsorption interactions that facilitate epitaxial crystallization of iPP. This study presents four effective allyl sorbitol nucleating agents, providing molecular-level guidance for the design of nucleating agents at enhancing rigidity and reducing haze in iPP.

Epoxy resin (EP) is widely used in fields such as building materials, aerospace, and transportation; however, its high fire risk is considered the main factor limiting its practical use. To address this issue, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is coated with phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride (PCN) to prepare PCN@APP. When compared with pure EP, the composite with high-loading APP is observed to exhibit reduced mechanical properties. In contrast, the composite containing modified APP is shown to demonstrate enhanced mechanical performance. Specifically, the flexural strength and tensile strength are increased by 9.13% and 45.09%, respectively. With the incorporation of 20 wt% PCN@APP, significant reductions are achieved in key fire parameters: the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR), total smoke production (TSP), peak CO production (PCOP), and peak CO 2 production (PCO 2 P) are lowered by 66.6%, 66.2%, 71.8%, 78.7%, 65.5%, and 68.6%, respectively. TG-IR results indicate that after adding the PCN@APP filler, the absorbance of CO and NO is reduced by 80.2% and 67.9%, respectively, demonstrating significant suppression of fire toxicity. This work is considered to provide valuable inspiration for the straightforward design of APP-based flame retardants, thereby enhancing their flame-retardant efficiency.
