Boosting extraordinary energy-storage in BaTiO3-based ferroelectric ceramics via surface reconstruction cation-defects engineering

Zhang Yi,Gu Yaohang,Wang Shuo,Zhang Xiaoyan,Qi Xiwei

Lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) have great potential applications in dielectric ceramic capacitors due to their distinguished energy storage performance, such as power pulse devices, manufacturing motors, sensors, and more. However, achieving high energy density and high efficiency simultaneously is a major challenge for practical applications. The performance of a capacitor depends largely on the interface between metal electrode and ceramics, which is related to the transfer of charge carrier process. In this work, the relaxation degree and defect dipole are manipulated by entropy manipulation and cation defect, while the surface micro-region area defect control is caused by the surface buried firing calcination process. We have designed and synthesized the performances of all the series of BaTiO 3 -basedperovskite ceramics as well as surface cation defect modification such as BaTiO 3 , Ba 0.95 TiO 3 , (Ba 0.95 Sr 0.05 )TiO 3 , (Ba 0.95-3x/2 Sr 0.05 Bi x )TiO 3 , resurfaced (Ba 0.95 Sr 0.05 )TiO 3 , and resurfaced (Ba 0.95-3x/2 Sr 0.05 Bi x )TiO 3 . Surface micro-region lattice distortions caused by the surface cation-defects reduce the carrier diffusion between the metal electrode and the BaTiO 3 -basedperovskite ceramic samples, which diminishes the polarization hysteresis and improving the energy storage efficiency. Specifically, the surface reconstructed (Ba 0.8 Sr 0.05 Bi 0.1 )TiO 3 ceramics exhibited excellent breakdown field strength characteristics ( E b  = 155 kV·cm −1 ) and minimal hysteresis residual polarization characteristics ( P r  = 1.9 μC ·cm −2 ), resulting in the largest storage density ( W rec  = 1.193 J/cm 3 ) and highest efficiency ( η  = 83.41%), indicating the general efficacy of our surface cation-defects engineering strategy, which provided new insights for the design of ceramic components.

Flexoelectric response in BaTiO3-based ceramics doped by transition group elements V, Mn and Ni

Yuyu Liu,Fan Zhang,Rui Zhu,Weijin Chen,Yue Zheng

It is well known that doping can significantly affect the dielectric and eletromechanical properties of perovskite ferroelectrics like BaTiO 3 . However, the influence of transition group element doping on the flexoelectric property of BaTiO 3 -based ceramics remains poorly studied. Here, we made a comparative investigation on the flexoelectric property of BaTiO 3 -based ceramics doped by transition group elements V, Mn and Ni. The phase composition, crystal structure, and average grain size of the ceramics were determined using X-ray diffraction refinement and scanning electron microscopy. It shows that the samples all exhibit dense and uniform microstructures with clear grain boundaries, but they have different average grain sizes ranging from 15 to 59 μm. Ceramics with larger average grain sizes exhibit higher dielectric constants and Curie temperatures. While the flexoelectric coefficient of Ni-doped, V-doped and pure BaTiO 3 ceramics varies from 15.36 μC/m to 60.37 μC/m, showing positive correlation with average grain sizes, that of the Mn doped BaTiO 3 ceramic which has the largest average grain size (59 μm) is rather small (19.01 μC/m). We suggest that the increased conductivity of ceramics suppresses the flexoelectric effect. The factors determining the flexoelectric coefficient of BaTiO 3 based ceramics doped by transition group elements should include electrical conductivity in addition to dielectric constant which is further affected by grain size. Our work gains new insight into the flexoelectric effect in perovskite oxide ceramics.

Piezoelectric and triboelectric synergies in MXene/BaTiO3/PAN composite nanofiber membranes for self-powered sensors

Tianchan Jia,Shengbin Cao,Xiaosong Liu,Lei Li,Kai Dong

Traditional power technologies are constrained by size and endurance, whereas nanogenerators offer lightweight, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy solutions. In this study, an MXene/BaTiO3/PAN composite nanofiber membrane was developed using electrospinning technology. The incorporation of BaTiO3 nanoparticles and two-dimensional MXene flakes significantly enhanced the piezoelectric properties of the PAN matrix, resulting in an output voltage of 6.45 V and a current of 308 nA-approximately four times higher than that of pure PAN. Notably, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) were integrated into one single device, addressing the low output and stability issues of traditional PENGs. The integrated device achieved a higher stable output voltage of 12–14 V and retained stable performance over 5000 cycles. Moreover, the MXene component endowed the nanofiber membrane with excellent photothermal properties, achieving a temperature rise of 42 °C under 1 W cm−2 solar irradiation. This demonstrates its potential for human joint photothermal therapy and underscores its value for developing high-performance self-powered sensors and wearable electronic devices.

Novel nano BaTiO3-based microwave vacuum treatment for precise and controllable scales stripping of wool fibers

Liuxiang Zhan,Jiahui Pei,Jianye Yuan,Yuling Li,Feng Ji,Ni Wang

Barium titanate nanoparticles were used as a locator to help accurately break the scales on the surface of wool fibers under microwave vacuum treatment, as an anti-felting process of wool with low environmental impact. The nanoparticles loaded by ultrasound are sandwiched between the scales and fibers, which allows the microwave energy concentration to break the scales for the shrink resistance of wool and avoid damaging the main body of fibers synchronously. The friction and mechanical properties of wool under microwave treatment with different power, temperature and processing time were discussed, morphological and chemical analysis of the fibers after treatment was also carried out. The results suggested that compared with the uncoated fibers, the anti-felting performance of the coated fibers after treatment had been significantly improved, while maintaining the mechanical properties, the tip end of the scales on the wool surface were cut off and the volume of the felting ball was increased by 82.3%. The nanoparticles coating the wool were also easily cleaned without residue. This study provided a novel potential approach in the modification of wool fibers for anti-felting.

High energy density of polyimide composites containing one-dimensional BaTiO3@ZrO2 nanofibers for energy storage device

Junchuan Wang,Ying Sun,Pengna Wang,Xuemin Yu,Hongbing Shi,Xueqin Zhang,Hong Yang,Baoping Lin

Novel one-dimensional (1D) core-shell structured BaTiO 3 @ZrO 2 (BT@ZrO 2 ) nanofibers have been synthesized through coaxial electrospinning. Homogeneous composite films containing 1D BT@ZrO 2 nanofibers as filler and polyimide (PI) as the polymer matrix were fabricated. The depolarizing ZrO 2 layer with moderate dielectric constant was introduced onto the BT nanofibers surface and decreased the electric filed caused by the tremendous contrast between the PI matrix and the BT nanofibers in permittivity. The energy density and breakdown strength of the BT@ZrO 2 /PI composites can be substantially enhanced. It was established that the 2 vol% BT@ZrO 2 /PI composite film has the maximum energy density of 2.53 J/cm 3 at 361 kV/mm, which is ≈ 180% higher than that of the pristine PI (1.40 J/cm 3 at 303 kV/mm). Furthermore, finite element simulation was carried out to understand the effect of ZrO 2 layer on the electric field distribution. This work demonstrates the advantages of the moderate inorganics layer in increasing the breakdown strength and highly enhancing the energy density of the polymer based composites.

Large energy-storage density and positive electrocaloric effect in xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics

Hui Tang,Xiang Niu,Peng-Fei Zhao,Xin-Gui Tang,Xiao-Dong Jian,Xian-Yi Chen,Xiao-Cao Peng,Zhi-Peng Yang,Sheng-Guo Lu

xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state reaction process. The X-ray diffraction patterns of xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 showed that the structure of samples was transformed from the tetragonal phase to the pseudo-cubic phase when x ≥ 0.025. The calculated universal Curie–Weiss constants and slim shape of the polarization-electric field hysteresis loops indicated that xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 ceramic was converted from a normal ferroelectric to a relaxor ferroelectric. The energy-storage properties of 0.1BiFeO3–0.9BaTiO3 were also measured at room temperature. The maximum discharged energy density and efficiency procured were 1.22 J cm−3 and 85.98%, respectively. The electric field-dependent energy-storage density was fitted using an exponential function of En, and it was found that n < 2. It was worth noting that the positive electrocaloric effect (ECE) was observed in xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 bulk ceramics, no matter when directly measured using a thermocouple or indirectly calculated using the Maxwell relation. Also, a ΔTmax of 1.55 K was indirectly calculated from the temperature-dependent P–E hysteresis loops for 0.05BiFeO3–0.95BaTiO3; while a ΔTmax of 2.20 K was directly obtained using the thermocouple. The positive ECE means that the xBiFeO3–(1 − x)BaTiO3 is a conventional ferroelectric or relaxor ferroelectric. Finally, the electrocaloric strengths measured were considered with the equation dT/dE obtained by Lu et al.

Densification and Property Optimization of BaTiO3 Piezoelectric Ceramics Fabricated by Digital Light Processing with Sintering Aids

Yaxiang Sun,Peipei Wang,Weikai Shi,Xin Lan,Yanju Liu,Jinsong Leng

BaTiO 3 ceramics fabricated by conventional methods have been the primary focus of previous investigations. In contrast, the effects of different sintering aids on DLP-fabricated BaTiO 3 ceramics were systematically investigated over a wide sintering-temperature range. A DLP fabrication route incorporating sintering aids was employed to overcome the limitations of conventional fabrication in producing complex-structured lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with tailored properties. BaTiO 3 ceramics were fabricated using a high-solid-loading photosensitive slurry (85 wt%). Four independent compositions were prepared, each containing a single sintering aid (CuO, SiO 2 , TEOS, or Li 2 CO 3 ). The printed samples were subsequently sintered at temperatures ranging from 1375 to 1475 °C to establish clear processing–structure–property relationships. The results show that all sintering aids significantly influence densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and functional properties. Among them, TEOS-containing ceramics exhibit the most balanced overall performance, with optimal properties achieved within 1425–1450 °C. The sample sintered at 1425 °C shows the highest relative density (0.941) and dielectric constant (1904), while the maximum piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 = 234 pC/N) is obtained at 1450 °C. CuO addition leads to the highest piezoelectric response (d 33 = 258.7 pC/N), but is accompanied by abnormal grain growth and reduced microstructural stability. In contrast, SiO 2 - and Li 2 CO 3 -containing samples exhibit comparatively lower overall performance due to less effective densification and microstructural development. Overall, a systematic comparative framework was established for evaluating the effects of different sintering aids on DLP-fabricated BaTiO 3 ceramics. The combination of sintering-aid engineering and additive manufacturing offers an effective route for optimizing the microstructure and multifunctional performance of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics for energy harvesting and sensing applications.

BaTiO3/FeOCl composite as highly efficient Piezo-Photo-Fenton catalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Jiaheng Xu,Huajun Sun,Xinyue Yang,Huiling Guo

In recent years, an increasing amount of drug pollutants such as antibiotics have been entering the water environment, and conventional water treatment technologies struggle to decompose these persistent organic contaminants. In response to the above situation, this study utilized a partial pyrolysis method to synthesize a novel type of BaTiO 3 /FeOCl heterostructure catalyst, and established a Piezoelectric-Photo-Fenton catalytic system to achieve effective degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). With concurrent exposure to visible light radiation and ultrasonic excitation, the BaTiO 3 /FeOCl system achieved complete degradation of TCH within 6 min, demonstrating significantly superior performance compared to individual components or single-process systems. Moreover, the system exhibited broad pH adaptability and excellent operational stability, and quantitative detection and radical trapping confirmed •OH and •O 2 − as the principal reactive oxygen species. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the intrinsic piezoelectric field of BaTiO 3 promotes charge carrier decoupling and boosts the turnover of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox couple, while FeOCl served as an active site for H 2 O 2 activation, thereby synergistically leading to the abundant formation of reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O 2 − ). This work presents an effective strategy for integrating piezoelectric, photocatalytic, and Fenton processes to enhance catalytic efficiency, presenting a highly prospective strategy for the purification of organically polluted wastewater.

Tailoring Actuated Performance of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Fluorosilicone Rubber Composites via Controlling BaTiO3 Particle Size and Content

Yu Zeng,Lu Tang,Fangfang Guo

Fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) has emerged as a promising matrix for actuator composites, while the trade-off between dielectric performance and mechanical robustness restricts its practical applications. Herein, we report a series of FSR/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites modified with nano-sized BaTiO 3 (nBT) and micro-sized BaTiO 3 (μBT) to investigate the size-dependent effects of BaTiO 3 on composite performance. Owing to the coordination effect between MXene and BaTiO 3 , uniform dispersion of fillers was achieved, and the composites exhibited thermal stability exceeding 400°C. The FSR/MXene composite with 8 phr (parts per hundred rubber) nBT showed a tensile strength of 486 kPa, elongation at break of 194%, and elastic modulus of 356 kPa, superior to the μBT-modified composite. It also possessed a higher dielectric constant (12.85 at 10 3 Hz) and lower dielectric loss (0.00522) than μBT-modified counterparts, attributed to stronger interfacial polarization and less particle agglomeration. Notably, an actuated strain of 19.58% at 45 kV mm −1 was achieved, 35.7% higher than the μBT-modified composite. This work reveals that BaTiO 3 particle size significantly regulates the synergistic interaction between ceramic particles and conductive MXene, providing a feasible strategy for designing high-performance FSR-based composites toward soft actuator and sensor applications.

Defect-assisted core-shell control in rare-earth-doped BaTiO3 ceramics for high reliability BME MLCCs

Shucheng Liu,Shangchao Chi,Kui Chen,Moke Zhou,Bin Tang

This work investigates the microstructure, defect chemistry, internal stress distribution, and reliability of Y–Yb co-doped BaTiO 3 ceramics, in comparison with Y–Er co-doped counterparts. STEM–EDS reveals stronger grain-boundary segregation of Yb-containing species, forming core–shell structures. GPA further shows that lattice distortion is strongly localized within these dopant-rich shells, whereas grain cores remain comparatively relaxed. In contrast to the weakly bound A-site defect chemistry of Er, Y–Yb co-doping is associated with the formation of rare-earth (RE)–oxygen-vacancy-related defect centers likely involving both Ba and Ti sites, inducing a strongly distorted dopant-rich shell that effectively suppresses oxygen-vacancy migration and significantly enhances grain-boundary insulating behavior. Accordingly, Y–Yb co-doped compositions exhibit longer lifetime and improved reliability, with the optimized Yb2 sample showing an approximately 2.2-fold increase in mean time to failure (MTTF) compared to the baseline sample (Yb0), while compositions with moderate Yb content achieve the best combination of high breakdown strength (12.78 kV·mm⁻¹) and superior DC-bias stability. Overall, these findings identify moderate Y–Yb co-doping as an effective route to achieving a balanced improvement in permittivity, reliability, and miniaturization capability in next-generation high-reliability BME-MLCC materials.

Multiscale Regulation of BiFeO3-BaTiO3 Lead-Free Ferroelectric Ceramics for Ultrahigh Piezoelectric Performance and Temperature Stability

Renjun Xu,Yingzhi Meng,Yongbao Cui,Biao Zhang,Bangxian Xie,Hongle Fan,Xiangdong Ding,Changbai Long,Laijun Liu

BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 system is considered a promising lead-free candidate for piezoelectric actuators, sensors, and energy-harvesting devices due to its good piezoelectric properties and high Curie temperature. However, achieving synergistic optimization of piezoelectric performance and thermal stability has remained a persistent challenge. Here, we propose a multiscale modulation strategy by precisely controlling Bi excess ( x ) and designing quenching pathways in 0.7Bi (1+ x ) Fe 0.99 Nb 0.01 O 3 -0.3BaTiO 3 ceramics. The results demonstrate that water quenching for sintering in O 2 (O 2 WQ) effectively increases c /a ratio of tetragonal phase and modulates domain configuration and suppressing the concentration of point defects. Bi excess-induced octahedral distortion and valence state modulation of Fe promote the switching of ferroelectric domains. Both enhance piezoelectricity and temperature stability. Remarkably, the x = 0.01 composition with O 2 WQ treatment achieves optimal performance: a room-temperature piezoelectric coefficient d 33 = 236 pC/N, a high Curie temperature T C = 472 °C, an excellent thermal stability across 60-270 °C ( d 33 = 314 ± 47 pC/N), as well as high DC resistivity ρ > 10 6 Ohm·cm at 270 °C. This performance surpasses most reported lead-free piezoelectric systems and confirms the efficacy of our multiscale modulation strategy. This work provides a viable design paradigm for high-performance lead-free piezoelectric ceramics suitable for high-temperature and high-power applications.

Remarkably boosting catalytic performance of BaTiO3-based materials via phase boundary, band-structure and defect engineering

Yina Zheng,Guo Feng,Chao Chen,Meng Chen,Na Tu,Yunjing Chen,Xiangping Jiang,Feng Jiang,Haifeng Lv

BaTiO 3 (BT)-based ferroelectrics are constrained in piezo-photocatalysis by limited polarization tunability at room temperature and their intrinsically high phase-transition temperature. Constructing a multiphase coexistence structure near phase boundaries can effectively lower the energy barrier for polarization rotation, enhance the dynamic piezoelectric response, and facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers. In this work, a multiphase-regulation strategy is developed via synergistic A-/B-site co-doping to activate the catalytic performance of BT-based materials. A Sr 2+ and Zr 4+ co-doped Ba 0.8 Sr 0.2 Zr 0.15 Ti 0.85 O 3 (BSZ 0.15 T) catalyst was synthesized via a non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) method. The optimized composition exhibits rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence at room temperature. This feature significantly enhances polarization rotation and the piezoelectric response, thereby improving the efficiency of charge-carrier separation and transport. Under simultaneous ultraviolet irradiation and ultrasonic excitation, BSZ 0.15 T achieves a degradation efficiency of 99.5% for RhB degradation, with a rate constant k of 9.554 × 10 −2 min −1 . Mechanistic investigations reveal that the enhanced performance arises from the synergistic effects of optimized band structure, strengthened built-in electric fields, and tailored oxygen vacancies. Specifically, Zr 4+ incorporation induces a downshift of the conduction band, thereby enhancing the electron reduction capability. This effectively facilitates the reduction of O 2 to generate superoxide radicals (• O 2 − O2− ). Meanwhile, the multiphase coexistence and abundant oxygen vacancies jointly accelerate charge migration and surface redox kinetics. This work provides a new perspective for enhancing the piezo-photocatalytic activity of BT-based materials through the synergistic phase-boundary and defect engineering.
