BACKGROUND The conversion of glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) involves the isomerization of glucose to fructose catalyzed by Lewis acid and subsequent dehydration of fructose catalyzed by Brönsted acid. In this work, in order to obtain a high yield of 5-HMF, a series of Sn-Al-Beta catalysts containing both Lewis and Brönsted acid sites were prepared by a convenient solid state ion exchange (SSIE) method using partially dealuminated Beta zeolite and tin(II) acetate. RESULTS The obtained bifunctional catalysts were investigated for one-pot production of 5-HMF from glucose in the ionic liquid (IL) [C 4 mim]Cl. Among various catalysts, Sn-Al-Beta- 4 - 8 exhibited the best catalytic performance, giving a 5-HMF yield of 54% under optimal reaction conditions (393 K, 2 h), along with a glucose conversion of 81%. The Sn-Al-Beta- 4-8 catalyst and IL were regenerated by the extraction of 5-HMF, and the reactivity was reserved after five runs of recycling. In addition to glucose, the Sn-Al-Beta- 4-8 /[C 4 mim]Cl system was also proven to have the potential to effectively convert other carbohydrates into 5-HMF. CONCLUSION The results suggested that the catalyst is convenient to prepare and has preferable efficiency and stability in the conversion of carbohydrates into 5-HMF. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

In this paper, a multifunctional wound dressing with sustained-release and antibacterial properties was prepared using cellulose acetate (CA) as the matrix and Dimethyloxallyl Glycine (DMOG) and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) as the drug loading component. The scanning electron microscopy shows that the microstructure of the nanofibers is uniform and droplet free, and the diameters of CA and CA/β-CD/DMOG nanofibers are mainly concentrated in the range of 40–120 nm, and the diameters of CA/DMOG/Ag-NPs nanofibers are mainly concentrated in the range of 120–200 nm. In vitro release test confirms that the CA/DMOG/Ag-NPs nanofiber can slowly release DMOG within about 84 h, which abides by a typical diffusion, and the main driving force is the concentration gradient between the drug-carrying nanofibers and the releasing medium. The antibacterial performance test demonstrates that the material exhibits obvious antibacterial performance against both E. coli and B.subtilis bacteria with little adverse effects on cell viability proved by cell compatibility test. Taken together, CA/DMOG/Ag-NPs can be a wound dressing material with good application prospects to promote the healing of diabetic wounds.

The physicochemical properties and thermodynamic parameters of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (ICs) containing essential oil were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. It is necessary to understand the ICs’ thermal decomposition behavior and kinetics to control and elucidate the inclusion complexation mechanisms. Carvacrol essential oil was encapsulated with hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP- β CD) using the freeze-drying method. The IC was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and phase solubility, which confirmed that there were molecular interactions between the carvacrol essential oil and HP- β CD. Moreover, thermal experiments were carried out by a thermogravimetric analyzer at different heating rates (10–40 °C min −1 ). In addition, three different models, i.e., FOW, KAS, and Starink, were used to calculate the kinetic energy. The FOW was a more proficient model for the calculation of activation energy (E a ). Further, the average values of E a varied from conversion, and for carvacrol, HP- β CD, and carvacrol/HP- β CD IC, they were found to be 70.56, 162.15, and 152.57 kJ mol −1 based on the FOW model, respectively. In general, carvacrol encapsulated into HP- β CD as an IC showed high thermal stability. The kinetic results could be useful in predicting the thermal performance of IC and in helping optimize experimental procedures for the encapsulation of essential oils in cyclodextrins. Due to riching in polyphenolic compounds, betalains, and ascorbic acid, beetroot ( Beta vulgaris ) extract exhibits an antibacterial activity. However, its effect on Listeria monocytogenes is unclear. In this study, the antibacterial activity of beetroot extract against L. monocytogenes was assessed by measuring its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the time-kill curve. Results revealed that the MIC of beetroot extract against L. monocytogenes was 20 mg/mL and bacterial survival decreased as beetroot extract concentration increased. The antibacterial mechanism of beetroot extract involved the reduction of intracellular 5ʹ-adenosine triphosphate levels of L. monocytogenes after treatment. L. monocytogenes exhibiting membrane depolarization, caspase-like protein activation, phosphatidylserine externalization, and DNA fragmentation, demonstrated that L. monocytogenes underwent apoptosis-like death (ALD) following beetroot extract treatment. Furthermore, the reason of ALD in L. monocytogenes is reactive oxygen species depletion. Beetroot extract decreased the number of L. monocytogenes cells, pH values, and lipid oxidation in cooked pork. Meanwhile, cooked pork become darker and redder than the control samples. It suggested that beetroot extract could be used as a natural preservative in cooked meat production to inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes .

Long non‑coding RNA colon cancer associated transcript 2 (CCAT2) is dysregulated in a number of different types of human cancer, and affects cancer progression via the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway. However, the roles of CCAT2 and the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway in prostate cancer (PCa) are not completely understood. The present study aimed to investigate the potential mechanism of CCAT2 in PCa. In the present study, the reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR (RT‑qPCR) results indicated that CCAT2 expression was significantly upregulated in PCa tissues, and DU145 and PC3 cell lines compared with normal prostate tissues and the epithelial RWPE‑1 cell line, respectively. Functional assays indicated that CCAT2 downregulation inhibited DU145 and PC3 cell proliferation, cell cycle, migration and invasion. In addition, the luciferase reporter assay, RT‑qPCR and western blotting results indicated that CCAT2 regulated transcription factor 7 like 2 (TCF7L2) expression by binding to microRNA‑217. Further western blotting and TOPFlash assays indicated that CCAT2‑knockdown inhibited the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway in DU145 and PC3 cell lines by inhibiting the expression of TCF7L2. However, CCAT2‑knockdown‑mediated effects were reversed by the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway activator lithium chloride (LiCl). Further cell experiments suggested that LiCl treatment reversed CCAT2‑knockdown‑mediated inhibition of PCa cell proliferation, cell cycle, epithelial‑mesenchymal transition, migration and invasion. Overall, the results indicated that CCAT2 regulated PCa via the Wnt/β‑catenin signaling pathway; therefore, CCAT2 may exhibit key role during the progression of PCa and may serve as a therapeutic target for the disease.

The direct synthesis of methyl acetate (MA) from methanol is an appealing and green approach, but an efficient catalyst is urgently needed. Herein, Cu-Ni bimetallic clusters, with a diameter of ∼1.2 nm, have been successfully encapsulated within BEA zeolite by an in-situ two-step encapsulation method (Cu-Ni@Beta), which significantly favors the dispersion of metals compared to the ion-exchanging (Cu/Ni@Beta) and wet impregnation approach (Cu-Ni/Beta). The as-synthesized Cu-Ni@Beta catalyst shows a MA formation rate of 1.46 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 , which is much higher than Cu/Ni@Beta of 0.02 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 and Cu-Ni/Beta of 0.12 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 . Characterization studies reveal that zeolite constraints could not only provide the spatial confinement for metal clusters but also induce an electronic interaction between confined Cu and Ni species in Cu-Ni@Beta. This interaction can increase and stabilize Cu + sites as well as Lewis acid sites, which are crucial for improving catalytic performance. In-situ FTIR experiments indicate that the formation of formaldehyde (CH 2 O*) is the critical step for methanol to MA, and the CH 2 O* further couples with methoxy (CH 3 O*) to form acetate species (CH 3 CHO*), which subsequently couples with CH 3 O* to produce MA.

As an important biomass resource, γ-valerolactone (GVL) shows considerable potential for applications in biofuel production, organic synthesis, polymer, and food industries. Herein, an effective method was presented for synthesizing GVL through the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of ethyl levulinate (EL) under mild conditions. Using isopropanol as a hydrogen donor, a 100% conversion of ethyl levulinate and an 88.7% yield of GVL were achieved over 2%Zr-Beta-7d catalyst at 110 °C for 8 h. The acidic sites of synthesized Zr-Beta via hydrothermal methods easily adjusted and offered high catalytic activity and selectivity. The Lewis (L) acid sites on the zeolite serve as the active centers for the conversion of EL. Characterization results indicate that the amounts of L acid sites on Zr-Beta increased with the Zr content and crystallization time rose, thus enhancing the selectivity for GVL. Additionally, the influences of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, and time on catalytic performance are studied, as well as calculations of kinetic parameters such as reaction rate constants and activation energies. The 2%Zr-Beta-7d catalyst retains its high performance after five cycles. The current research may present an efficient approach for the conversion of EL to GVL under mild conditions.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a frequently occurring disease of the elderly, and “deficiency” is the root of AD. Most famous experts of traditional Chinese medicine believe that the disease is based on deficiency, and the deficiency of kidney essence is the basis. Notopterygium incisum (Qiang huo) is beneficial to bladder, liver, and kidneys. It is used to treat liver and kidney deficiency, language difficulties, and mental coma. Qiang huo yu feng tang has been used to treat liver and kidney deficiency, unclear language and mental paralysis in many traditional Chinese medicine books and records. In modern times, it has been used to treat AD and exhibited favourable efficacy. Aim of the study This study attempts to investigate the effects of furocoumarins from Notopterygium incisum (NRE) on the Aβ cascade, tau pathology and inflammatory pathology of AD. Materials and methods In this study, we reported a detailed protocol for stabilizing HEK APPswe293T cells with lentivirus for the first time. This cell line can secrete high concentration of Aβ. In addition, we treated N2a cells with AKT/PKC specific inhibitors (wortmannin/GF-109203X) and established a tau pathological cell model (AKT/PKC N2a) by activating GSK3β and triggering hyperphosphorylation of tau. The Aβ levels and the expression of phosphorylated tau were detected by ELISA and Western blot . The cognitive ability of NRE on APP/PS1 mice was detected using a Morris water maze (MWM) assay and Aβ contents were also evaluated. Results In HEK APPswe293T cells, NRE (10, 20, 40 μg/mL) significantly inhibited the secretion and production of Aβ in dose dependent manner. In addition, NRE also suppressed the expression of phosphorylated tau in wortmannin/GF-109203X treated N2a cells. Furthermore, NRE ameliorated the cognitive impairment of APP/PS1 mice, and the contents of Aβ, IL-1β and TNF-α were significantly depressed in hippocampus and cortex. Conclusion In conclusion, our results demonstrated that NRE has a potential anti-AD effect via the inhibition of the Aβ cascade, tau pathology and neuroinflammation in vitro and in vivo.

Beta-2-Microglobulin (β2M) is a critical biomarker for diseases such as kidney disorders and cancer. However, electrochemical detection methods for β2M remain scarce. Therefore, a novel electrochemical immunosensor for the ultrasensitive detection of β2M was developed in this study. It is based on a ternary composite of polyaniline (PANI), poly- l -cysteine (PL-Cys), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) functionalized onto screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). Through the specific recognition between Beta2-microglobulin antibody (anti-β2M) and its target antigen, and utilizing bovine serum albumin (BSA) to block non-specific binding sites, a BSA/anti-β2M/PANI/PL-Cys/MoS₂/SPCE immunosensor was constructed. Experimental results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits excellent linearity within the 0.001–500 ng/mL (R²=0.9924), with a detection limit as low as 0.33 pg/mL. It shows outstanding selectivity (RSD=2.69%), repeatability (RSD=0.74%), and long-term stability (30-day RSD=2.64%). Recovery rates in serum samples range from 100.40% to 103.76%, confirming its reliability in complex biological matrices. The sensor combines the signal amplification effect of the conductive substrate (PANI/L-Cys/MoS₂) with the impedance effect of the insulating biological layer (antibody-antigen complex), utilizing the quantitative relationship between target analyte concentration and signal attenuation to achieve detection. This approach provides an efficient and low-cost new strategy for on-site rapid screening.

The acidity and pore structure of zeolite catalysts play a crucial role in the selectivity and stability of C4 alkylation due to the synergistic effect of reaction activity and diffusion. Herein, the effect of three acidic beta zeolites with different Si/Al ratios on adsorption, diffusion, and catalytic performance was studied using experiments and molecular simulations. The beta zeolite with the lower Si/Al ratio leads to the faster relative diffusion of isobutane to 1-butene and the smaller adsorption amount of alkylate products. Furthermore, the diffusion of molecules in the zigzag channel along the z direction of beta zeolites is much slower than other two directions. The experimental results indicate that lower Si/Al ratio cause the higher content of strong BAS in the zeolite, resulting in the higher hydride activity and the longer catalytic lifetime. This work provides a theoretical basis for the development of high catalytic activity zeolite catalysts.

Lignin-derived bio-oils contain abundant methoxyphenols exhibiting limited antioxidant activity, which requires their conversion to high-value polyphenols. This study develops titanium-loaded Hβ zeolite catalysts (xTi/Hβ) for the selective O-demethylation of methoxyphenols to catechols under subcritical aqueous conditions. Comprehensive characterization (XRD, XPS, STEM, NH₃-TPD, Py-FTIR) reveals that Ti exists as both framework-incorporated tetrahedral Ti⁴⁺ species (via Al³⁺ substitution) and surface-anchored anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). The optimal 5Ti/Hβ catalyst maximizes synergistic effects: framework Ti sites enhance Brønsted acidity, while Ti NPs facilitate H 2 O enrichment near active sites. This achieves 99.46% conversion of 4-propylguaiacol to 4-propylcatechol. Applied to distilled bio-oil, 5Ti/Hβ reduces methoxyphenol content from 48.50 Area.% to 20.25 Area.% and increases total polyphenols from 25.39 Area.% to 43.64 Area.%. Catalyst stability challenges under prolonged hydrothermal conditions are identified for future optimization.

H-Beta supported InO x -IrO x dual-function active sites with abundant acid sites are designed. • Synergy of InO x -IrO x regulates surface redox properties and InO⁺ species generation. • InO⁺ species and acid sites facilitates NO conversion while IrO x sites promote CH₄ activation. • IrIn/H-Beta demonstrates superior CH 4 -SCR performance. In the field of selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with methane (CH 4 -SCR), achieving a balance between high CH 4 -SCR selectivity and high CH 4 activation ability remains challenging. Herein, InO x -IrO x dual-function active sites anchored on the H-Beta zeolite with abundant acid sites are rationally designed. The InO x -IrO x bimetallic oxide structures and the confinement effect of the zeolite framework effectively suppress the migration and sintering of IrO x species, while the electron transfer between In and Ir facilitates the formation of Ir-O-In bond and the generation of InO⁺ species. The In sites, together with the acid sites of H-Beta, assist the conversion of NO into NO 3 - and NO⁺ species, while the CH 4 is predominantly dissociated on Ir sites to form In-CH 3 species via the Ir-O-In bond. These In-CH 3 species react with nitrate species on adjacent InO⁺ sites to form reactive intermediates such as CH 3 NO 2 , which further interact with NO⁺ to produce N 2 , CO 2 , and H 2 O. Owing to the dual functionality of InO x -IrO x active sites, the as-designed IrIn/H-Beta simultaneously achieves superior performance of 81% NO x conversion and 100% CH 4 conversion at 500°C under a gas velocity of 120,000 mL g -1 h -1 . Such proposed dual-function bimetallic catalyst design strategy demonstrates potential for developing a catalyst with high activity and high selectivity in CH 4 -SCR reactions. The as-proposed dual-function bimetallic IrIn/H-Beta catalyst demonstrates high activity and high selectivity in CH 4 -SCR reactions.
