Bi-functionalized ionic liquid porous copolymers for CO2 adsorption and conversion under ambient pressure

Liwei Sun,Jingyi Luo,Ming Gao,Shaokun Tang

Developing solid materials with high CO 2 adsorption capacity and catalytic activity has been a hotspot due to the greenhouse effect. In this work, bi-functionalized ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-methoxyethyl imidazolium glycinate ([VMOEim][Gly]) was copolymerized with crosslinker divinylbenzene (DVB) to obtain bi-functionalized ionic liquid porous copolymers P( n DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]) and HP( n DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]). These copolymers possess loose stack of small particles or laminates, and they contain mesopores and a small number of micropores. For HP(0.6DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]), surface area reaches up to 508 m 2 ·g −1 and the initial decomposition temperature is about 180 °C. Then these porous copolymers were applied for CO 2 adsorption at 25 °C and cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 with epichlorohydrin under ambient pressure and cocatalyst-free condition. The maximum CO 2 capture capacity is 64.5 mg/g with HP(0.6DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]) as adsorbent. The effects of catalyst type, catalyst dosage, reaction time and temperature on the yield of cyclic carbonate were also investigated. The optimum conditions are 4 wt% of HP(0.6DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]) (based on the epichlorohydrin) as catalyst at 130 °C for 10 h, and the yield of 4-(chloromethyl)-1,3-dioxolan-2-one can reach 94%. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of HP(0.6DVB-[VMOEim][Gly]) maintains and the yield is 91% after five-cycle experiment. The mechanism of cycloaddition reaction was also discussed.

La0.8Sr0.2Co1-xMnxO3 perovskites as efficient bi-functional cathode catalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Qin Wang,Yejian Xue,Shanshan Sun,Shihua Li,He Miao,Zhaoping Liu

In this work, the La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 1-x Mn x O 3 (x   =   0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) perovskites (LSCM) were synthesized by a facile improved sol–gel method. The crystalline structures, morphologies, Co/Mn valence states and oxygen adsorption/desorption behavior of the LSCM materials are systematically studied, and their catalytic activities toward ORR and OER are investigated by the rotating-disk electrode (RDE) and zinc-air battery techniques. It is found that the proper substitution of Co with Mn can efficiently improve the ORR and OER activities of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3 perovskite at the same time. The LSCM-60 catalyst exhibits the optimum bi-functional activity. It is mainly attributed to the regulation of the Bi-site Co/Mn valence states and the improvement of the oxygen adsorption/desorption capability. Besides of the good bi-functional property, LSCM-60 shows superior durability compared with Pt/C and IrO 2 catalysts. When using LSCM-60 as the cathode catalyst of zinc-air batteries, the low charge-discharge overpotential (1.05   V at 50   mA   cm −2 ) and the excellent long-term cycle stability were obtained. This study exhibits the possibility to improve the bi-functional activity of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3 through a simple doping process.

Synthesis and characterisation of W–Bi–S-tridoped TiO2 nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity

D. Tan,Y. Liu,W. Guo,J. Wang,Z. Chang,D. Li

In the present work, W–Bi–S-tridoped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesised by a simple sol–gel method. The structure and morphology of as-prepared W–Bi–S-tridoped TiO2 were characterised by using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum. It was found that the W–Bi–S-tridoped TiO2 nanoparticles were well crystallised with a small size distribution. The absorption edge of TiO2 was extended into visible-light region obviously after being doped with W, Bi and S. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue was used as a probe reaction to evaluate the efficiency of W, Bi and S doping. The W–Bi–S-tridoped TiO2 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, compared with TiO2, S-TiO2, W–S–TiO2 and Bi–S–TiO2. The mechanism that enhanced photocatalytic activity might be attributed to the synergistic effect of W, Bi and S.

Fe-Bi Diatomic Sites with Interactive Regulation for Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Activity and Selectivity

Pengxiang Zhang,Yumeng Wu,Shuling Liu,Xiaofeng Zhang,Xianji Guo,Xianli Wu,Yanyan Liu,Baojun Li

Rational design of heteronuclear dual‑atom catalysts with strong electronic coupling and spatial complementarity for highly selective 4e– oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a significant challenge in electrocatalysis. Herein, a catalyst, Fe–Bi diatomic structures anchored in a cellulose-derived activated carbon matrix (FeBiDA@CC), was obtained for ORR, in which the Fe and Bi atoms exerted a synergistic effect through strong electronic coupling. Bi modulates Fe's spin and electronic structure, while Fe promotes Bi electron polarization and activation of outer shell electrons. The Fe–Bi spatial distance in the dual metal sites geometrically matches O2 bond length, optimizing modes of adsorption and activation to facilitate the preferred 4e– ORR pathway and improve catalytic stability. FeBiDA@CC exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.93 V, an electron transfer number of 3.92–4.00, and a current loss of only 7.2% after 100 h for ORR. Liquid and flexible zinc-air batteries based on FeBiDA@CC as a cathode catalyst demonstrate outstanding peak power densities of 200.5 and 96.6 mW cm–2, respectively, alongside excellent long-term cycling stabilities of 10,800 and 438 cycles, respectively. This work offers a novel perspective for electronic structural regulation and design of p-block element-based catalysts, opening new possibilities for the design of catalysts in the energy storage field.

CTAB-regulated Bi/Bi2WO6 heterojunction with effectively enhanced visible light photocatalytic degradation of pollutants

Jiang Shukang,Zheng Guangwei,Zhang Fengqing,Yu Hongwen,Cai Yongfeng,Zhang Yanli

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect demonstrated by noble metal nanoparticles has been shown to significantly boost the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors under visible light. However, the high cost limits their practical use. Recent studies have found that bismuth (Bi), a non-noble metal, exhibits similar SPR properties. In this work, we developed a new synthesis method for Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts using a secondary solvothermal process. The metallic Bi was reduced in situ with tartaric acid as the reducing agent, while hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) served as a surfactant to control the morphology. The Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction prepared with an optimal CTAB amount (0.02 g) showed much better light absorption, achieving 100% degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 15 min under visible light, representing a 57% improvement over pure Bi 2 WO 6 . Recycling tests confirmed the exceptional photochemical stability and recyclability. The high performance in RhB degradation can be linked to the SPR effect of metallic Bi, which improves light absorption, produces active sites and reactive species, and speeds up carrier transfer. Additionally, the formation of the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 Schottky heterojunction promotes carrier separation and prevents recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. This study also offers a clear mechanism for the photodegradation process of the synthesized photocatalyst. Overall, this work presents a new and affordable strategy for developing high-performance photocatalytic systems, with great potential for practical applications in environmental cleanup and pollutant removal.

Liquid Bi electrode-assisted selective separation of UO22+ and Ce(III) in molten salt

Jiayi Chen,Wei Han,Yixuan Cai,Xudong Wang,Rugeng Liu,Meng Zhang,Mei Li,Weiqun Shi

Studied the electrochemical behavior of Ce(III) ions on Bi film electrodes and liquid Bi electrode. • Studied the effect of Ce (III) ions on the electrochemical behavior of UO 2 2+ at Bi film electrode and liquid Bi electrode. • Ce(III) ions and UO 2 2+ ions were separated via potentiostatic and galvanostatic electro-deposition on a liquid Bi electrode. • Found that better separation of Ce(III) ions and UO 2 2+ can be achieved at relatively low potentials. • The extraction efficiency and separation efficiency were calculated for electrolytic separation at lower potentials. To achieve the separation of uranium and fission products, a liquid Bi electrode was employed to study the electrochemical separation of the fission product Ce(III) ions and UO 2 2+ ions. The electrochemical reduction mechanism of Ce(III) ions was investigated at a Bi film electrode using three electrochemical testing methods: CV, SWV and CP, The results showed that a series of reduction peaks related to the formation of Ce-Bi intermetallic compounds appeared at potentials more positive than the reduction potential of Ce(III) ions. Meanwhile, the electro-reduction mechanism of Ce(III) ions at a liquid Bi electrode was also explored. A reduction peak associated with the formation of Bi-Ce solid solution was recorded. The impacts of Ce(III) ions on the electro-reduction mechanism of UO 2 2+ at a Bi film electrode were examined, and found that the electro-reduction of UO 2 2+ was two-step single-electron transfer process before and after the addition of Ce(III) ions. Furthermore, electrochemical separation of UO 2 2+ and Ce(III) ions was performed at a liquid Bi electrode at -0.7 V/-1.3 mA cm -2 . XRD results confirmed that the separation product included not only UO 2 , but also Ce 2 O 3 and Bi-Ce alloy. Nevertheless, constant potential electrolysis experiment was conducted at the potential of -0.3 V, and the product analyzed by XRD, SEM and EDS demonstrated that only spherical UO 2 with a regular morphology was obtained. The separation factor between UO 2 2+ and Ce(III) ions and extraction efficiency of UO 2 were calculated to be 34.4 and 97.76 %, respectively. BiVO4 with surface Bi-vacancies enhanced photoelectrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate oxidation and electrocatalytic nitrate reduction

Meichun Qin,Jingqi Qi,Zhiwei Qin,Zilong Wang,Sui Mao,Jianguo Tang

Bi vacancy efficiently improved charge transport and electron-hole pair separation of BiVO 4 . • Bi vacancy in BiVO 4 enhanced photoelectrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate oxidation. • After coupling PETOR with NO 3 RR, the performance of PETOR was greatly improved. • The glycolic acid and formate yield was 6.02 mmol h −1 g −1 and 97.32 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode material but suffers from severe charge recombination, resulting in unsatisfactory photoelectrocatalysis. Herein, we report the fabrication of a deep-eutectic solvent (DES)-treated BiVO 4 photoanode (BiVO 4 -DES-x) with bismuth vacancies (Bi vac ). The generation of Bi vac in BiVO 4 -DES-x efficiently improved the charge transport properties, electron–hole pair separation of BiVO 4 , and production of hydroxyl radical, boosting its photocatalytic activity and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) oxidation to form value-added glycolic acid (GA) and formate (FA). We designed a coupling system using photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of waste PET and nitrate (NO 3 − ) electrocatalytic reduction. Thus, BiVO 4 -DES-x functions as a photoanode and cathode. In the coupled reaction system, the GA yield rate increased from ∼ 4.20 mmol h −1 g −1 to 6.02 mmol h −1 g −1 and the Faradaic efficiency from ∼ 87.71% to 95.36%, while the FA yield rate was ∼ 97.32 mmol h −1 g −1 . This study provides an efficient solution for microplastic pollution and offers technical support for alleviating white pollution. Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Bi─O Unsaturation Coordination in BiOCl for Efficient Photocatalytic Water Purification

Shuaihao Ma,Jianglong Kong,Shidong Zhang,Wentao Li,Ling Yan,Deng Long,Xinglin Yu,Dawei Wang,Zheng Han,Sihan Ma,Lin Wang,Guang Ran

The stable modulation of the local charge distribution behavior induced by unsaturation sites within photocatalysts continues to pose a significant challenge in the quest to achieve notable enhancements in photocatalytic activity. Herein, we harnessed the hydrogen annealing reduction technique to deliberately introduce oxygen vacancies (OVs) into the BiOCl lattice for constructing the OVs-Bi-O structure, which decreases the valence state of Bi, and diminishes the Bi─O coordination, further establishing a charge asymmetric region within the material. This distinctive structural arrangement facilitates the sufficient migration of electrons to adjacent Bi sites that are closely linked to the OVs, significantly promoting the capture capability of electrons, leading to more adsorption and activation of water and oxygen as well as the conversion of reactive oxygen radicals. The engineered OVs-BiOCl variant showcases potential photocatalytic prowess, boasting a satisfactory photocatalytic application than that of its unmodified BiOCl counterpart. Under low-light conditions, this variant impressively achieves a ∼98.1% removal efficiency for RhB, while concurrently achieving an almost complete elimination of E. coli . This finding presents an insightful approach for manipulating unsaturation coordination active sites through the strategic introduction of controllable defects and elucidates the impact of unsaturation coordination on photocatalytic efficiency.

Bi-WS2 nanoflowers with expanded interlayer spacing for fast-charging sodium-ion battery anodes

Yingfan Guo,Yijun Gao,Shanshan Song,Yumeng Zhang,Zhong Xiao,Qiqi Sun,Lei Li,Fei He

Tungsten sulfide (WS 2 ) is a promising sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) anode due to its high capacity and distinctive layered structure, but its practical use is hindered by poor conductivity, large volume expansion, and particle aggregation. In the study, a bismuth-doped WS 2 (Bi-WS 2 ) nanoflower structure is developed to overcome the above limitations. The intercalation of bismuth ions expands the interlayer distance of WS 2 from 0.62 nm to 0.67 nm, thereby providing more space for Na + storage. Moreover, the incorporated bismuth ions further improve the electronic conductivity and contribute to improved structural stability. The nanoflower architecture presents ample exposed edge sites, which facilitate reversible diffusion of Na + along the edges and help to mitigate mechanical stress developed during the discharge-charge cycles. Notably, the bismuth doped tungsten disulfide nanoflowers delivers a high reversible capacity of 433.0 mAh g −1  at 0.2 A g −1 with an exceptional rate capability. Even after 2000 cycles at a high current of 10.0 A g −1 , it still delivers a capacity of 234.4 mAh g −1 , exhibiting promising electrochemical performance in comparison with previously reported anodes. Hence, Bi-WS 2 demonstrates great potential for use as a high-rate anode in future generation SIBs.

Self-powered smart textile with mechano-thermal bi-modal response for extreme environment applications

Sizhuo Zou,Qi Yang,Jize Liu,Weilin Xu,Guangming Cai

Addressing the micro-energy requirements of distributed intelligent terminals in the Internet of Things (IoT), energy harvesting technologies present a sustainable pathway for powering smart wearable electronics. However, their operational reliability under extreme environmental conditions constitutes a major barrier to practical implementation. Therefore, this study fabricated a multi-scale triboelectric-piezoelectric synergistic yarn through integrated electrospinning and weaving methods, positioned for application in rescue protective clothing under high-temperature and mechanical impact environments. The multi-layered architecture of the yarn enables the integration of key functionalities essential for operation in harsh environments, including flame retardancy, thermal insulation, impact resistance and thermochromic visual warning. The resulting CPBPT exhibits a wide operating temperature range of 0–300 °C. Moreover, it can maintain stable output voltage after 300 bending cycles, 300 friction cycles, or 10 washing cycles. By leveraging its dual responsiveness to mechanical and thermal stimuli, an intelligent bi-modal perception system was constructed. This system demonstrates high recognition accuracies of 99.6% (mechanical) and 94.55% (thermal), respectively. This work proposes a novel energy-harvesting material based on triboelectric-piezoelectric synergy and establishes a material-level design paradigm for next-generation self-powered systems capable of operating reliably in harsh environments.

Thermoelectric Nanocomposites and Segmented Single-Leg Device Based on GeTe and (Bi,Sb)2Te3

Lawrence Yongo Methodius Emiliano,Yilin Jiang,Hua-Lu Zhuang,Hezhang Li,Chen Chen,Su-Wei Zhang,Yuzuru Miyazaki,Jing-Feng Li

Thermoelectric (TE) materials offer a promising route for direct thermal-to-electrical energy conversion via the Seebeck effect. Among them, GeTe exhibits superior performance in the mid-temperature range (500–800 K), whereas (Bi,Sb)2Te3is widely regarded as the benchmark material for near low-temperature applications (< 450 K). To improve TE efficiency over a wider temperature range, segmented GeTe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3-based single-leg TE devices were developed. Specifically, based on nanocomposite technology, B4C and SiC nanoparticles were, respectively, introduced into GeTe and (Bi,Sb)2Te3, achieving optimization of electrical conductivity alongside reduction in thermal conductivity, thereby enhancing the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT). Finite element simulations were used to optimize the geometric structure of the segmented device, determining the ideal ratio of GeTe to (Bi,Sb)2Te3. The simulations predicted a maximum conversion efficiency (ηmax) of 16.9% when the ratio of GeTe to (Bi,Sb)2Te3was 0.24, with a power density of 18.5 mW/mm2. Experimentally, the fabricated segmented device attained a peak conversion efficiency of 7.14% and a power density of 12.5 mW/mm2under a hot-side temperature of 773 K. These findings confirm that strategic segmentation, combined with nanoscale phonon scattering engineering, substantially improves overall TE device performance across broad temperature range, underscoring its potential for high-efficiency thermoelectric energy conversion systems.

Electrochemiluminescence shunt via bi-based co-reaction accelerator for the identification of pentanol isomers

Zong Peipei,Zhao Yaqi,Shi Xiaomeng,Zhang Xun,Zhang Yiming,Sun Xiaolei,Qin Xie,Jiao Lei,Lu Xiaoquan

Pentanol represents an attractive clean-burning biofuel, yet fuel commonly contain multiple structurally similar pentanol isomers that perturb the flash-point and impair combustion performance, necessitating the differentiated identification of pentanol isomers. Herein, we propose an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) shunt strategy that redirects reaction intermediates in a Bi-based bifunctional system, thereby guiding the selective cathodic or anodic ECL emission of luminol for identification of pentanol isomers. In-situ characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that Bi single atoms selectively generate hydroxyl radicals to induce cathodic ECL signal of luminol. In contrast, Bi nanoparticles generate superoxide radicals alongside the electrooxidation of luminol, which triggers an anodic ECL signal. According to the disparate radical-scavenging behaviors of pentanol isomers, a dual-channel ECL sensor array is fabricated. We demonstrate accurate classification of five pentanol isomers by combining principal component analysis clustering with a random-forest supervised-learning model.
