Simultaneous electricity production and pollutant removal via photocatalytic fuel cell utilizing Bi2O3/TiO2 porous nanotubes decorated by g-C3N4

Sheng-Zhe Zhao,Rui-Dong Shi,Guo-Tao Xiang,Yong-Da Hu,Jin-Ju Chen

The system of photocatalytic fuel cells (PFC) emerges as a significant innovation within the realm of energy conversion technologies, harnessing the potential of organic waste to produce electrical energy. In this study, we propose a novel approach for simultaneous electricity production and pollutant removal using a PFC system, which consists of Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 heterojunction nanotubes modified by g-C 3 N 4 as photoanode materials. The g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 (CBT) heterostructure possesses a large specific surface area, improved visible light absorption, and enhanced photogenerated carrier separation capability. The morphology, composition, crystal structure, and optical properties of the synthesized CTB were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Using tetracycline hydrochloride as the target pollutant, the photocatalytic degradation performance of the CBT heterostructure is 3.2 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 nanotubes. Furthermore, the PFC system consisting of CBT as photoanode has a significant improvement in pollutant degradation and current output when compared with the PFC with pure TiO 2 . This study presents a cost-effective approach for organic waste treatment and simultaneous electricity production.

Oxygen vacancy-rich CuBi2O4/Bi2O3 heterostructure and flower-like NiCo layered double hydroxides electrodes for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Wenxiao Zhang,Zize Zhao,Ziyang Zhu,Li Zhang,Xiaohui Xu,Xuemei Chen,Xinyan Wang,Min Lu

The rapid development of high-performance electrode materials for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) needs to solve the bottleneck problem of low energy density. Compared with the positive electrode material, the development of the negative electrode material is relatively lagging and has become one of the key "short board" to limit the energy density of the supercapacitor device. In this study, the oxygen vacancy-rich CuBi 2 O 4 nanoparticles are triumphantly anchored on the interface of rod-like Bi 2 O 3 after calcination to prepare the heterostructure CuBi 2 O 4 /Bi 2 O 3 (CBO/BO) composites by the combination of simple hydrothermal process and calcination. Due to the unique anchoring mode, heterogeneous structure, and oxygen vacancy introduction, the CBO/BO as the cathode processes the capacitance of 294.7 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 . In addition, bimetallic NiCo layered double hydroxides (NCL) with the 3D flower-like structure prepared by a one-pot process is used as the positive electrode and the specific capacitance of 186.7 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The assembled water-based NCL//CBO/BO ASC triumphantly amplifies the potential window to 1.7 V, achieves the ultrahigh energy density between 91.8 and 52.9 Wh kg −1 at 850–8500 W kg −1 , and maintains the remarkable cycle consistency. Density functional theory calculation fully proves that oxygen vacancy and copper doping can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. Therefore, the research results in this paper afforded a feasible way to further develop asymmetric supercapacitors with ultrahigh energy density.

Bi2O3/rGO/TiO2 catalytic membrane for advanced treatment of secondary effluent: Insights into EfOM degradation and membrane fouling alleviation

Zhiwei Zhou,Junyan Chen,Haikuan Yu,Yuantian Zhao,Xing Li,Jiawei Ren

Secondary effluent organic matter (EfOM) significantly contributes to membrane fouling in ultrafiltration (UF) systems, which limits their broader use in municipal wastewater recycle. A modified ceramic ultrafiltration membrane (MCUM) was synthesized via vacuum filtration and thermal treatment and then activated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The results indicated that the MCUM-2.88 exhibited the most excellent removal of EfOM, effectively retained high molecular weight (MW) proteinaceous substances, and converted medium MW humic-like compounds into lower MW derivatives. Through parallel factor analysis in conjunction with the self-organizing map algorithm, it was observed that the MCUM primarily degraded aromatic, high MW fluorescent components, while tryptophan-like substances remained as dominant residues due to their resistance to photodegradation. Additionally, the improved surface roughness and hydrophilicity of the MCUM facilitated fouling mitigation by strengthening interfacial repulsion, which diminished foulant adhesion. The fouling mechanism transitioned from complete and intermediate blocking to predominantly intermediate blocking, accompanied by a reduction in gel layer fouling. Consequently, the reversible fouling resistance of the MCUM was reduced by 76.8 %, and the irreversible resistance by 34.3 %, markedly enhancing antifouling performance. The results underscore the effectiveness of MCUM in advanced municipal wastewater treatment, showcasing enhanced antifouling performance and strong potential for sustainable water reuse applications.

Adsorption configuration control on Pt-Bi2O3 for the oriented conversion of glycerol to glyceric acid via terminal hydroxyl oxidation

Han-Yue Yang,Bin Sun,Xue Xiao,Xuan Ai,Rui-Bin Jiang,Pei Chen,Yu Chen

Glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production, can be efficiently converted into valuable chemicals through electrocatalytic reaction. In this study, platinum (Pt) nanocrystals decorated on bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) nanosheets (PtBi DONS) with an optimal Pt:Bi ratio of 1:1 were successfully synthesized using a galvanic replacement method. Pt 1 Bi 1 DONS exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic performance for glycerol electrooxidation, achieving an excellent catalytic activity (current of 0.82 A mg Pt –1 at 0.67 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and an exceptional selectivity of 96.6% for C 3 products, particularly glyceric acid. The superior performance stems from two key factors: (1) electron transfer from Bi 2 O 3 to Pt creates electron-rich Pt sites that suppress C–C bond cleavage and (2) Bi 2 O 3 facilitates favorable glycerol adsorption configurations through multiple hydroxyl group interactions. Mechanistic studies using operando spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the synergistic effect between Pt and Bi 2 O 3 promotes rapid charge transfer and stable intermediate formation. Moreover, PtBi DONS showed excellent versatility in oxidizing other polyols compared with monoalcohols.

Anode-Supported SOFCs with a Bi2O3-Doped NiO–ScSZ Anode and ScSZ Electrolyte: Low-Temperature Co-Sintering and High Performance

Shang Peng,Zhao Liu,Pairuzha Xiaokaiti,Tiancheng Fang,Jiwei Wang,Guoqing Guan,Abuliti Abudula

In this study, a novel anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) comprising a Bi2O3-doped NiO-ScSZ anode and an ScSZ electrolyte was successfully fabricated via a low-temperature co-sintering process at 1300 °C. The incorporation of 3 wt% Bi2O3effectively promoted the sintering of both the anode support and electrolyte layer, resulting in a dense, gas-tight electrolyte and a mechanically robust porous anode support. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed the formation of phase-pure, highly crystalline ScSZ with an optimized microstructure. Electrochemical performance measurements demonstrated that the fabricated cells achieved excellent power density, reaching a peak value of 0.861 W cm−2at 800 °C under humidified hydrogen fuel conditions. The cells maintained stable performance under dry methane operation, with a maximum power density of 0.624 W cm−2at 800 °C, indicating resistance to carbon deposition. Gas chromatographic analyses further revealed that the Bi2O3-doped NiO-ScSZ anode facilitated earlier and more stable electrochemical oxidation of methane-derived species compared with the conventional NiO-YSZ system, even under conditions of an elevated methane partial pressure. These findings demonstrate that Bi2O3co-doping, combined with low-temperature co-sintering, provides an effective approach for fabricating high-performance intermediate-temperature SOFCs with enhanced structural integrity and electrochemical stability. The developed methodology presents a promising pathway toward achieving cost-effective and durable SOFC technologies.

Bismuth impregnated biochar for efficient estrone degradation: The synergistic effect between biochar and Bi/Bi2O3 for a high photocatalytic performance

Ningyuan Zhu,Chunquan Li,Lingjun Bu,Cilai Tang,Sichu Wang,Pengfei Duan,Lunguang Yao,Jun Tang,Dionysios D. Dionysiou,Yonghong Wu

An innovative advanced oxidation process was successfully developed to photocatalytic-degradation of estrone through the synergistic effect of biochar and Bi/Bi 2 O 3 in bismuth-containing photocatalytic biochar (BiPB). The highest reaction rate constant ( k obs ) of estrone degradation by BiPB was 0.045 min −1 under the conditions of initial concentration of estrone =10.4 μmol L −1 , [BiPB] =1 g L −1 , pH = 7.0. The k obs was almost tenfold and more than 20 times than that of biochar without bismuth impregnation and pristine Bi/Bi 2 O 3 , respectively. The best photocatalytic performance of BiPB composites for the degradation of estrone was primarily attributed to generation of OH radicals. Impregnation of bismuth helped control the concentration of persistent free radicals (PFRs) and develop a hierarchical porous structure of biochar. The presence of biochar facilitated pre-concentration estrone on BiPB and improved the separation and transfer efficiency of charge carriers. The synergistic effect between biochar and Bi/Bi 2 O 3 contributed to the generation of OH radicals for estrone degradation under neutral pH conditions. The transformation pathway of estrone was also proposed based on the measured transformation products in the presence of BiPB. The high efficiency of BiPB composites indicated that this easily-obtained material was promising for estrone-wastewater treatment applications as a low-cost composite photocatalyst.

Enhancing optical and radiation shielding properties of B2O3-TeO2-BaO-Bi2O3 high-entropy oxide glass through heavy metal oxide modification

Jiale Wu,Xinyu Zhao,Jin Hu,Zhongshan Deng,Yongjin Feng,Hongtao Fan,Junkai Li,Qingming Chen,Kaijun Wang,Kaizhao Wang

Considering the growing hazards of ionizing radiation, developing new shielding glass systems is essential to increase radiation safety and diversity of material choices in the real-time monitoring field. Based on the excellent comprehensive performance exhibited by high-entropy oxide glasses (HEOGs) due to its unique component composition and high-entropy effect, B 2 O 3 -TeO 2 -BaO-Bi 2 O 3 -MO (W, Ta, Dy, Mo) HEOGs with heavy metal oxides as the fifth component were prepared via the melt-quenching process. Physical, structural, and optical properties analysis show that the tantalum pentoxide (Ta 2 O 5 )-optimized HEOG has higher densification, more continuous and compact network filling, and wider indirect optical bandgap (Eg) than other glasses. The radiation attenuation ability of HEOGs was evaluated utilizing the MCNPX simulation and Phy-X program. The minimum specific lead equivalent (PbE) value of all heavy metal HEOGs in the entire photon energy range (10 −3 –10 3 MeV) is much higher than all types of commercial lead glass in service, showing excellent comprehensive attenuation ability for X-rays, γ-rays, and fast neutrons. In addition, the addition of Ta 2 O 5 dramatically shortens the path and attenuation times required for incident photons to annihilate inside the material due to the density increase effect brought by the high atomic number and high density. In the 100 MeV nuclear radiation area and the 0.08 MeV medical X-ray application zone, only 10 cm and 0.3 cm thickness are needed to achieve saturated absorption of photons.

In-situ construction of 2D/2D β-Bi2O3/Bi5NO3O7 extra-low van der Waals heterojunctions with improved photocatalytic degradation activity

Jiehao Li,Meng Ning,Yi-lei Li,Rui-hong Liu,Haiyang Gao,Ying Liu,Yingjuan Hao,Hui-ying Mu,Fa-tang Li

The construction of heterojunction nanomaterials offers a viable solution to enhance degradation capabilities. In this work, in-situ 2D/2D β-Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 5 NO 3 O 7 extra-low van der Waals (VDW) heterojunctions with oxygen vacancies are prepared by a simple solution combustion method. The successful preparation of extra-low VDW heterojunctions are verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Density Functional Theory (DFT), etc. The carrier flow direction is determined by DRS, Mott-Schottky, Kelvin probe and femtosecond transient absorption spectra (fs-TAS) characterization. The rate of photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light by the 5.6 β-Bi 2 O 3 /Bi 5 NO 3 O 7 (5.6 BBNO) heterojunction is 1.59 times that of Bi 5 NO 3 O 7 and 3.28 times that of β-Bi 2 O 3 . This is attributed to the extra-low van der Waals heterojunction, which not only enhances the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers but also lowers the valence band maximum of Bi 5 NO 3 O 7 . Furthermore, capture agent experiments and EPR tests confirm that holes (h + ) play a key role in photocatalytic degradation.

BrO3– Bridge Bi2O3/Bi(OH)3 Heterojunction with Multiple Charge Transfer Channels for Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation and CO2 Reduction

Sitong Liu,Guangmin Ren,Xiangchao Meng

A BrO3–-modified Bi2O3/Bi(OH)3 heterojunction photocatalyst was in situ fabricated by a facile one-pot method and applied in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. In comparison with Bi(OH)3, the Bi2O3/Bi(OH)3 heterojunction has a larger specific surface area from the nanoflower-like morphology and an extended visible light absorption range. Of special importance, the proper band gap match between Bi(OH)3 and Bi2O3, the multiple charge transfer channels via the BrO3– bridge, and the oriented electron migration in the type-II heterojunction mechanism make a stronger charge separation efficiency. Therefore, the BiO/BiHO-3 sample presented the highest photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance with an ammonia production rate of 45.28 μmol g–1 h–1, which was 10 times higher than that of Bi(OH)3. Photogenerated cavities are consumed during H2O oxidation to produce O2 and H2O2. However, the O2 production was small, and the H2O2 yield was about 78.5 μmol g–1 h–1. For CO2 reduction, the CO production rate was 52.86 μmol g–1 h–1, which was 1.6 and 1.9 times those of Bi(OH)3 and Bi2O3. This work provides useful guidance for the design and synthesis of efficient catalysts for photocatalytic N2 fixation.

NiTiO3/Bi2O3/MoS2 double Z-type heterojunction catalysts realize dual-function applications of photocatalytic fuel cells and lactic acid sensing

Jie Zhou,Nan Zhou,Mingjie Liu,Haokun Tan,Zhichao Wang,Xiaoyuan Zhang,Zhiqiang Su

Sensors in intelligent monitoring and personal healthcare generally face power supply problems, such as cycle charging, regular maintenance, and battery replacement, which greatly limit the applications of sensing devices. Self-powered sensing system with a visible-light-driven photo-fuel cell (PFC) exhibits the advantage of not requiring any external power source for the chemical sensing of analytes. In this work, an enzyme-free PFC self-powered sensing platform was established for sensing sweat lactate using photoelectric conversion technology. A NiTiO 3 /Bi 2 O 3 /MoS 2 double Z-type heterojunction system was prepared by electrostatic interaction and self-assembly as the anode of the PFC. NiTiO 3 , Bi 2 O 3 and MoS 2 formed a double Z-type heterojunction system accelerated the electron transfer and improved the light absorption and photocatalytic efficiency, which in turn improved the perception of LA. In addition. lactic acid sensing experiments showed that the prepared non-enzymatic photoelectrochemical sensors had good detection performance. The assay results showed that the prepared biosensor has a wide detection range (30 μM-5 mM), low detection limit (6 μM), high selectivity(8μA μM −1 cm −2 ) and long-term stability. These assay results demonstrate its potential for applications in fields such as biomedicine and drug analysis.

Polyaniline/g-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ti photoanode for visible light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell degradation of rhodamine B and electricity generation

Lin Dong,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Haixing Chang,Jun Li,Yi Liu,Zhuofan Han

In order to develop efficient photoanode to improve the performance of visible light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC), in this work, polyaniline/g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 3 /Ti photoanode was successfully prepared using silica-sol drop coating method, and assembled with Cu cathode to construct PFC to decompose rhodamine B and generate electricity simultaneously. The degradation rate, maximum photocurrent density and maximum power density of this PFC were 91.23%, 0.086 mA cm −2 and 4.78 μW cm −2 , respectively, which were 1.4 and 1.8 times, 2.4 and 4.5 times, and 1.9 and 7.3 times those of the corresponding values of the PFCs with g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 3 /Ti and Bi 2 O 3 /Ti photoanodes, respectively. This is attributed to the type II heterojunction structure formed among polyaniline, g-C 3 N 4 and Bi 2 O 3 in the polyaniline/g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 O 3 /Ti photoanode. Among them, polyaniline has π-π conjugated structure, which can rapidly transfer the electronic charge between g-C 3 N 4 and Bi 2 O 3 , thus enhancing the separation efficiency of photo-generated e − -h + pairs spatially and reducing their recombination, extending the visible light response wavelength of the photocatalyst, and finally improving its photocatalytic properties. This study can provide significant reference for the research of Bi 2 O 3 -based visible light responsive PFC.

Fabrication of Bi2O3 QDs decorated TiO2/BiOBr dual Z-scheme photocatalysts for efficient degradation of gaseous toluene under visible-light

Hao Xu,Jian Yang,Yang Li,Fan Fu,Kang Da,Shaobo Cao,Wenting Chen,Ximei Fan

Weak visible-light capture ability, ultrahigh charge recombination rate, and poor redox ability are crucial constraints to improve the photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation under visible-light. Hence, a dual Z-scheme of Bi 2 O 3 quantum dots decorated TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalysts (Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr) were prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method . X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to identify the existence of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and TiO 2 that loaded on the surface of BiOBr. The introducing of oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 broadened its light absorption region to the visible-light. The constitutes of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and BiOBr were regulated and the optimized photocatalyst BT1-B10 exhibited 94.1 % of removal rate for gaseous toluene degradation after 150 min irradiation of visible-light (>420 nm) as well as good recoverability and durability. This result was obviously superior to other comparison samples. In-situ DRIFTs spectra and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) were carried out to provide a possible pathway for the toluene degradation. Additionally, a dual-channel electron transfer model based on the Z-scheme was proposed, which presented desirable visible-light response region, efficient charge separation efficiency, and enhanced redox ability. Notably, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) served as the dominant active species was confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) and gas-phase capture tests, that was beneficial to the ring-opening of toluene degradation. This dual Z-scheme heterojunction of Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalyst showed great potential for the degradation of toluene under visible-light irradiation.
