With the advancement of industrialization, the contamination of aquatic environments by organic pollutants has become increasingly severe, highlighting the urgent need for efficient and stable visible light-driven photocatalysts. In this study, g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite photocatalysts were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis method. Experimental results show that the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite achieves degradation efficiencies of 95.7% for Rhodamine B and 86.5% for ciprofloxacin, with reaction rate constants enhanced by factors of 1.98 to 12.8 compared to the individual components. Furthermore, the catalyst retains high activity after three consecutive cycles, indicating excellent recyclability and structural stability. Combined theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveal that a built-in electric field at the heterojunction interface, in synergy with interfacial orbital hybridization, promotes a direct Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This mechanism not only reduces the band gap, extending visible-light absorption, but also enables efficient separation of photogenerated carriers while preserving strong redox capabilities. This work establishes a robust theoretical and experimental foundation for the rational design of high-performance visible-light-responsive photocatalytic materials.

Fe ions were incorporated into octahedral sites of palygorskite to achieve lattice reconstruction via a facile hydrothermal route. • A dual Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed in Bi 2 WO 6 /Fe-substituted palygorskite composites for efficient charge separation. • In-situ formed Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles enhanced visible-light absorption and provided abundant active sites for CO 2 adsorption and activation. • The optimized photocatalyst showed a CO generation rate of 831.26 μmol g −1 h −1 with high selectivity up to 74.82% toward CO. The rational utilization of natural nano-minerals toward high-performance photocatalysts is highly desirable yet challenging. In this work, Fe ions were introduced into the octahedral sites of acid-activated palygorskite (Pal) to realize lattice reconstruction via a thermostatic oil bath-assisted hydrothermal strategy. Bi 2 WO 6 /Fe-substituted Pal (BWO/Fe-Pal) composites were then fabricated by hydrothermal deposition of Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets on Fe-Pal supports. Fe substitution preserved the basic crystalline structure of Pal while effectively narrowing its band gap. When the Fe mass ratio exceeded 20 wt%, Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were in-situ precipitated on Pal surfaces, which strengthened visible-light absorption and provided abundant active sites for synergistic adsorption and photoactivation of CO 2 . The optimized 30FPB-0.3 photocatalyst exhibited a CO generation rate of 831.26 μmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 26.12 times higher than that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 (31.82 μmol g −1 h −1 ). Meanwhile, CO selectivity was significantly improved from 17.6% to 74.82%. Systematic characterizations demonstrated that Fe doping and in-situ formed Fe 2 O 3 modulated the band structure of Pal and increased surface-active sites. Moreover, the hybridization with Bi 2 WO 6 induced the formation of a dual Z-scheme heterojunction, which broadened the photoresponse range and greatly promoted the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. This study provides a green, low-cost, and feasible route for designing efficient mineral-based photocatalysts toward photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Recent advancements in sustainable bio-sourced functional materials have focused on enhancing the valorization of lignin-derived biopolymers through innovative transformation methodologies. This study highlights breakthroughs in lignin-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic systems, emphasizing extended spectral responsiveness, optimized interfacial photoexcited carrier separation and reduced energy loss mechanisms. Two photocatalysts, Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) and ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) were co-engineered via a Z-scheme charge-transfer pathway using coaxial electrospinning and hydrothermal synthesis with lignin-based carbon nanofibers (CNFs), preserving the fibrous skeleton intact. The all-component photocatalytic nanomembrane exhibited superior mechanical strength (Young’s modulus = 20.38 MPa, toughness = 2.48 kJ/m 3 ) under wet conditions along with accelerated stabilization kinetics (1°C/min, representing a 10-fold increase), resulting in significant energy savings. Using methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant, the CNFs@BWO/ZIS nanomembrane achieved 94.4% degradation efficiency ( k = 0.01664 min −1 ) after 120 min of solar irradiation, while maintaining excellent recyclability through five successive cycles. Furthermore, we elucidated the systematic mechanism of surface charge-carrier migration in the Z-scheme heterojunction and MB decomposition. This photocatalytic system utilizing sustainable biomass functional materials paves the way for wastewater treatment, with the goal of achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality. For this work, we employed n-type Bi 2 WO 6 and p-type PhC 2 Cu to formulate a direct Z-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /PhC 2 Cu (PCBW) photocatalyst via simplified ultrasonic stirring technique. An optimal 0.6PCBW composite exhibited the capacity to rapidly photodegrade 2,4,6-TCP (98.6% in 120 min) under low-power blue LED light, which was 8.53 times and 12.53 times faster than for pristine PhC 2 Cu and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. Moreover, electron spin resonance (ESR), time-resolved PL spectra, and quantitative ROS tests indicated that the PCBW enhanced the separation capacity of photocarriers. It also more readily associated with dissolved oxygen in water to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among them, the ability of PCBW to produce ·O 2 - in one hour was 12.07 times faster than for pure PhC 2 Cu. In addition, the H 2 O 2 formation rate and apparent quantum efficiency of PCBW are 10.73 times that of PhC 2 Cu, which indicates that PCBW not only has excellent photocatalytic performance, but also has outstanding ROS production ability. Furthermore, Ag photodeposition, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to determine the photogenerated electron migration paths in the PCBW, which systematically confirmed that Z-scheme heterojunction were successfully formed. Finally, based on the intermediate products, three potential 2,4,6-TCP degradation pathways were proposed.

The coal chemical industry generates large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and solid wastes. Within this work, porous semi-coke activated carbon (SAC) was produced from solid waste semi-coke (SC) powder. Through loading high performance photocatalysts onto SAC to efficiently degrade VOCs using synergistic effects of adsorption and photocatalysis, acheiving the resourcefulness of solid waste. The specific surface area of the prepared SAC can reach 619.27 m 2 .g −1 , which was effective against the adsorption of VOCs. An one-step hydrothermal method was used to load a 2D Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 -Bi 2 WO 6 (NB) photocatalyst on a semi-coke activated carbon. The 50 wt% NB/SAC material degraded formaldehyde, benzene and toluene up to 93.6%, 84.4% and 78.8% in 130 min under visible light irradiation, being 6.09, 4.55 and 4.75 times higher than that of a single photocatalyst, respectively. The capture experiments showed that hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) and superoxide radicals (⋅O 2 – ) were the active species in the degradation pathway. The material maintained a high degradation performance of 84.8%, 79.6% and 74.0% even after five cycles. In this study, the mechanism of using SAC as a substrate to enhance performance in photocatalytic degradation was described. The results of this study offered new insights into the resourcefulness of solid waste and the effective degradation of VOCs. It also offered a promising theoretical foundation for the exploitation and utilization of high-performance photocatalysts.

Atrazine (ATZ), as a widely used s-triazine herbicide, has persistence and biological toxicity in the environment. Photocatalytic technique is considered as sustainable and promising strategy for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants. Thus, 3D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method for ATZ degradation. The Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 -0.15 exhibited 99.96% removal efficiency for ATZ and the rate constant was approximately 25, 4.8 and 10 times greater than the rate constants of Bi 2 WO 6 , g-C 3 N 4 and “Bi 2 WO 6 + g-C 3 N 4 ”, respectively. The influence of synthesis reaction factors of Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 and various environmental factors including catalyst dosage, ATZ concentration, pH, common anions and HA on photocatalytic property of Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 were also investigated. The radical-quenching experiments proved that holes (h + ), 1 O 2 and O 2 – played pivotal roles in ATZ degradation in Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic system. The ATZ degradation pathway involved dealkylation, alkyl hydroxylation, alkyl oxidation, dechlorination-hydroxylation and deamination-hydroxylation reactions, which was proposed by HPLC–MS/MS results and density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Moreover, quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) evaluation showed that the ecotoxicity of many intermediates declined compared with ATZ. The 3D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction exhibited excellent photostability and pH adaptability, showing efficient practicality in the removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater.

It is an effective method to explore full spectrum responsive photocatalyst for improving their photocatalytic activity. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 −OH/Bi 2 WO 6 :Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ composites were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The resultant Ti 3 C 2 −OH/Bi 2 WO 6 :Yb 3+ , Tm 3+ composites accompanied 2D/2D heterojunction with grid-like porous structure present a significant enhancement of photoactivity towards degradation of RhB under visible and NIR light irradiation. Specifically, the 0.2-Y/T-TB2.8 composite exhibits the best photocatalytic activity for RhB removal, in which the RhB degradation efficiency was 99.8% (Vis-NIR, 30 min), 91% (Vis, 30 min), and 48% (NIR, 160 min). The excellent photocatalytic activity of the composite is attributed to the grid-like porous structure endowing it with an enhanced RhB adsorption, favorable charge separation resulting from the outstanding conductivity of the Ti 3 C 2 −OH, and up-conversion mechanism via energy level transition of Yb 3+ /Tm 3+ . In addition, the radical capture experiments verified that the hole (h + ) plays the important role for degradation of RhB.

The remarkable limitations in photocatalysis still remain: low utilization of visible light, poor charge transfer and separation, and insufficient active sites. To address these issues, herein, Au–Bi2WO6 hybrid photocatalysts are synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method, possessing a good combination of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) and abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) in the hybrid nanostructures. The Au–Bi2WO6 hybrid photocatalyst with an optimal Au content exhibits outstanding activity and selectivity toward selective oxidation of aromatic amines under visible light, far outperforming pure Bi2WO6 nanostructures. The collaborative contributions of hot charge carriers from Au NPs, photoexcited electron–hole pairs from Bi2WO6, and the OVs for efficient adsorption–activation of molecular O2 result in the enhanced photocatalysis for selective oxidation under visible-light irradiation. This study will motivate the rational construction of metal–semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts with multiple active sites and boost the utilization of solar energy to drive a broad range of organic transformations.

A novel visible-light-driven photocatalyst Bi 2 WO 6 /Ag 2 O/CQDs (BWO/Ag 2 O/CQDs), which possesses hierarchical superstructure with marigold-like appearance, was fabricated via a hydrothermal method, followed by a simple precipitation process. Ag 2 O nanoparticles sized around 25 nm and CQDs with diameters of about 10 nm were evenly deposited on Bi 2 WO 6 to form a unique heterostructure. The obtained BWO/Ag 2 O/CQDs heterostructure showed excellent adsorption and remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance in the photodegradation of antibiotic tetracycline (TC) under visible-light irradiation compared to pristine Bi 2 WO 6 . The degradation rate of TC over BWO/Ag 2 O/CQDs photocatalyst is 16.2 times higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 and a possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic performance was discussed. In addition, BWO/Ag 2 O/CQDs was applied in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under visible-light illumination. The result demonstrated that the conversion rate and product selectivity are greatly improved over BWO/Ag 2 O/CQDs compared to pristine Bi 2 WO 6 in the same reaction conditions, making it a promising photocatalyst in the application of green chemical transformation. The co-coupling of CQDs and Ag 2 O with matched band potentials gives a substantial promotion for the light harvesting ability and effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers, synergistically accounting for the improvement of photocatalytic efficiency.

The construction of visible-light-driven hybrid heterostructure photocatalysts is of great significance for environmental remediation, although the utilization of strong visible-light response photocatalysts with high efficiency and stability remains a major challenge. On the other hand, defect engineering is an excellent way to introduce metal cation vacancies in materials, thereby ensuing in highly enhanced catalytic performance. Inspired by this, we effectively constructed a built-in interface α-MnO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure with abundant intimate interfaces and defective Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ active sites for photocatalytic tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl), hexavalent chromium Cr 6+ reduction, and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) inactivation. The experimental results, such as the active species test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, indicated that the defective sites Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , surface oxygen vacancies, and Bi (3+x)+ boosted the visible light absorption, and highly enhanced the photoinduced charge separation/transfer. Furthermore, experimental and DFT calculations reveal the high charge density at the built-in interface heterostructure and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism during the photocatalytic process. The results further reveal that O 2 − and 1 O 2 are the main reactive active species contributing to the photocatalytic reaction. The exceptional TC-HCl decomposition activity of the α-MnO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructure (97.56%, 2.31, and 2.04 times higher than bulk), enhanced reaction kinetics (K app = 0.041 min −1 , 6.4, and 5.2 times higher than bulk), removal rate of 80.3%, Cr 6+ reduction to Cr 3+ (98.56%, K app = 0.0599 min −1 ), and almost 100% bacterial inactivation compared to bulk α-MnO 2 (42.22%) and Bi 2 WO 6 (47.76%), were mainly due to the enhanced charge separation/transfer at the built-in interface and high charge density. This study opens new horizons for constructing Z-scheme MnO-based interface heterostructures with abundant defect sites for exceptional photocatalytic applications.

An easily separation composite, magnetic chitosan@bismuth tungstate coated by silver (MCTS-Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 ), was successfully synthesized by the simple hydrothermal method. Moreover, the MCTS-Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 demonstrated excellent adsorption/photocatalytic removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solution. Adsorption played a leading role in the synergistic reaction. The catalysts were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effects on adsorption of Cu(II) were investigated, which included illumination, pH, and initial concentration. The experimental results showed that the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) (181.8 mg/g) was achieved under simulated solar light irradiation with the optimal pH value of 6.0, indicating that illumination could enhance the adsorption of Cu(II) by MCTS-Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 . Meanwhile, the composite exhibited desirable adsorption ability of Cu(II) after 5 cycles. The copper ion adsorption fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and its isotherm followed Freundlich model.

Composites coupling different semiconductors have attracted increasing attention for photocatalytic application owing to low visible-light absorption capability and weak photocatalytic activity of the single-component system. In this study, Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 /rGO ternary composites, successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, were manifested as an outstanding visible-light-response photocatalyst for the disinfection towards E. coli . X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that GO coupled in the composites was efficiently reduced to rGO during the hydrothermal process, which was greatly beneficial for enhancing light harvest, promoting charge separation, and improving photocatalytic disinfection activity. UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence, photocurrent measurements, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy clearly showed that Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 /rGO composites had narrower band gap energy and much better suppression capability of photoinduced electron-hole recombination in comparison to the pure Bi 2 WO 6 and TiO 2 , and Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 . The radical trapping results revealed that the photogenerated holes (h + ) were the leading active species responsible for the effective inactivation of E. coli under visible-light irradiation. Hence, the underlying mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic disinfection performance of Bi 2 WO 6 /TiO 2 /rGO composites was proposed. This study provides new insight into the design and development of composite materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity, which can be an inspiring alternative for environmental application.
