The binary BiOBr/BiOI composite photocatalysts with different molar ratios obtained via a simple one-step solvothermal method were investigated by using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, TEM, HR-TEM, BET, UV-vis DRS and PL. The degradation efficiency of uniform flower-like BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) is best when the samples were used to degrade RhB solution under visible light irradiation, which is attributed to its uniform particle distribution and the largest specific surface area of 44.21 m2 g−1. Compared with the previously synthesized BiOBr/BiOI, the morphology and specific surface area of BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) have obvious advantages. The influence factors (pH, NO3−, Cl− and HCO3−) on the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) were explored. The recycling experiments demonstrate that BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) composite maintains high photocatalytic activity after eight recycling experiments, and its crystal structure and morphology do not change. In addition, a possible degradation mechanism was also ascertained by radical capture experiments, EPR and semiconductor structure analysis. All results suggest that the uniform flower-like BiOBr/BiOI (3 : 1) composite with high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, excellent recyclability and stability has promising application potential for the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in wastewater.

The establishment of p–n heterojunction between semiconductors is an effective means to improve the performance of semiconductor photocatalysts. For the first time, we synthesize SnO2/BiOBr heterojunction photocatalysts using a one-step hydrothermal method. Systematic material characterizations suggest that the photocatalysts consist of irregular BiOBr nanosheets with the length about 200 nm and width about 150 nm, and SnO2 nanoparticles are anchored uniformly onto the nanosheets. Most importantly, electrochemical characterizations including transient photocurrent profiles and electrochemical impedance spectra suggest that SnO2/BiOBr heterojunctions are created, which facilitates the charge separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. As such, SnO2/BiOBr photocatalysts exhibit remarkable photocatalytic activities in terms of degrading a series of organic pollutants. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectra suggest that superoxide radicals (•O2–) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are primary medium species running through the photocatalytic degradation process and enhanced photocatalytic performance.

The novel BiOBr flower-nanospheres embedded by hexagonal Cu have been synthesized successfully through an ingenious design, by one-step solvothermal process with two kinds of bifunctional reagents, namely, 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [C 16 min]Br and ethylene glycol (EG). Pure BiOBr flower-sphere has been synthesized by solvothermal process. In the result of Cu-embedded BiOBr flower-nanospheres, the diameter of the flower-sphere is about 1.5 μm (±0.1) with hexagon copper about 10-nm side length in the petals of BiOBr flower-nanospheres. The Cu-embedded BiOBr composites exhibit high photocatalytic activity than pure BiOBr, which was investigated by the degradation of rhodamine B solution (RhB) and methyl orange solution (MO) under simulative visible-light irradiation. Nearly 100 and 80% of conversion can be achieved from the degradation of RhB and MO after 1.5 h, respectively. The high ability of photocatalysis may be attributed to the narrow-band-gap semiconductor BiOBr, high electron transportation of copper, and the coupling of Cu and BiOBr. It can lead to the strong absorption in the visible region and improve the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs.

Tremendous demands for photocatalysts with high chemical activity and stability, low cost and capability of response to visible-light have stimulated intensive research on developing versatile materials with special photocatalytic applications. Here we report a novel g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr-RGO aerogel ternary-component heterojunction photocatalyst for degradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. As a result of synergistic effect of the g-C 3 N 4 , BiOBr and RGO, the hybrid photocatalysts exhibit better activity than the single component catalysts (pure g-C 3 N 4 , BiOBr) and bi-component catalysts (g-C 3 N 4 /BiOBr) in the same time period (60 min). The enhanced photocatalytic performance originates from a novel nanoarchitecture in which BiOBr exposed more active plane and RGO worked as a conductive support further improved the photogenerated charge separation. Moreover, due to the 3D structure of RGO after reaction the photocatalysts can be easily removed from the treated solution and reused, which opens up a way for the recycling applications of catalysts in aqueous reaction systems.

Improving radiation effect and reducing radiation resistance is the key issue to boost the effectiveness of radiotherapy. Herein, we have developed a novel BiOBr 0.5 I 0.5 -BP heterojunction nanosheets (BOBI-BP NSs) for synergistic radiodynamic and photothermal therapy to enhance the efficacy of low-dose radiotherapy under hypoxic conditions. On one hand, this BOBI-BP heterojunction is rich in high-Z elements (Bi, I) and able to deposit high radiation doses into cancer cells, enhancing the radiotherapy effect. On the other hand, due to the heterojunction structure, a large number of electron-hole pairs can be generated and separated under X-ray trigger, which significantly improves the catalytic activity of catalyzing the overexpressed H 2 O 2 in cancer cells into highly toxic •OH, overcoming the oxygen dependence. 1 O 2 could be generated because of the unique sub-band structures of BP NSs and the synergistic effect between BOBI and BP, thereby improving the therapeutic utility of low-dose X-ray irradiation. The synergistic utility of BOBI-BP NSs as a combination of radiodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy agent and radiosensitizer was demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. This work provides the idea to develop rational designed heterostructures as efficient therapeutic nanoplatform for cancer treatment.

The utilization of solar energy in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology has demonstrated a significant potential in addressing the challenges of environmental pollution and energy shortage issues. Precise modulating of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve desired products is of particular interest, while the design of cost-effective and robust catalysts remains crucial. Herein, a series of BiOBr-based photocatalysts with different Co species were synthesized through a facile simple hydrothermal method in combination with the mechanical mixing. The Co species, which can be precisely modulated from Co 3 O 4 to CoOOH by adjusting the concentration of H 2 O 2 , were anchored into the BiOBr nanospheres to establish rich Z-scheme heterojunction interfaces. The Co species modulating of BiOBr-based Z-scheme heterojunction can achieve the transform photoreduction CO 2 products from CO to CH 4 . The CO selectivity in CO 2 photoreduction to reached 98.10 % (54.10 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), while the CH 4 selectivity over CoOOH/BiOBr reached 72.59 % (20.06 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). The outstanding photocatalytic performance and selective regulation of products are ascribed to the modulation of Co species in the BiOBr-based heterojunctions, which enables the customization of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve the desired products transformation from CO to CH 4 . In situ experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the excellent CO selectivity observed in Co 3 O 4 /BiOBr heterojunction can be ascribed to a lower energy for *CO species compared with that of hydrogenation to *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates. Conversely, the presence of *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates with lower energy levels compared with *CO species achieved superior CH 4 selectivity in CoOOH/BiOBr heterojunction. This precise design strategy insights into the meticulous customization of Co species in semiconductor-based heterostructures at the molecular level, and enlightens the selective regulation of desired products for catalysis applications.

The prevalence of 17β-estradiol (E2) in wastewater has attracted widespread attention due to the negative impacts on ecological environments and human health. Nowadays, photocatalysis has been emerged as an efficient technology for E2 containing wastewater treatment. However, traditional powder photocatalysts face challenges such as easy agglomeration, secondary pollution and difficult recovery, limiting their large-scale application. In this study, a photocatalytic PA/C-PANI@BiOBr membrane was fabricated by immobilizing polyaniline (PANI) layer and BiOBr nanosheets on polyamide (PA) membrane through in-situ chemical bath deposition. This process leveraged the strong hydrogen bond interaction between PANI and PA, with the fine PANI fibers providing nucleation sites for the in-situ growth of BiOBr nanosheets. By repeating the immersion process, we controlled variations in the coverage density and morphology of BiOBr on the membrane surface. The PA/C-PANI@BiOBr membrane exhibited outstanding light absorption and photocatalytic performance. Notably, the optimal PA/C-PANI@BiOBr-10 membrane achieved 100 % removal efficiency of 3 mg L −1 E2 within 40 min. In dynamic cyclic experiments, PA/C-PANI@BiOBr-10 membrane maintained stable permeability and high removal efficiency of pollutants. The photocatalytic mechanism underlying these results was elucidated through photoelectric testing and further photocatalytic experiments. Furthermore, the PA/C-PANI/BiOBr-10 membrane demonstrated remarkable durability over multiple consecutive cycles, with E2 removal efficiency remaining above 96.5 % after 5 cycles.

The immobilization of highly-efficient catalyst has always been one key issue in the research and development of industrial catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction. In this work, a series of novel Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite films with varying levels of Ag deposition have been successfully synthesized using in-situ photodeposition method. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction experiments indicate that 1.5 wt.%-Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite film demonstrates the highest CO generation rate (33.47 μmol∙m −2 ∙h −1 ) and cycle stability, exhibiting the 1.62-fold increase after the incorporation Ag nano-particles (NPs). Characterization tests reveal that the presence of Ag NPs not only brings about the red-shift phenomenon of light absorption to extend and enhance visible-light response, but also acts as photo-generated carrier recombination center between Bi 12 SiO 20 and BiOBr to create unique Z-scheme charge transport pathway. More importantly, the Schottky barrier effect between Ag and semiconductors is conducive to improving the effective separate of photogenerated charges, improving photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Our findings should offer valuable guidance for the research and development of construction heterostructures and noble metal deposition modification strategy for solar-driven CO 2 reduction photocatalyst system.

The development of superlyophobic materials in liquid systems, enabling synchronous oil/water separation and dye removal from water, is highly desirable. In this study, we employed a novel superwetting array-like BiOBr nanosheets anchored on waste rock wool (RW) fibers through a simple neutralization alcoholysis method. The resulting BiOBr/RW fibers exhibited superoleophilic and superhydrophilic properties in air but demonstrated underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic characteristics. Utilizing its dual superlyophobicity, the fiber layer demonstrated high separation efficiencies and flux velocity for oil/water mixtures by prewetting under a gravity-driven mechanism. Additionally, the novel BiOBr/RW fibers also exhibited excellent dual superlyophobicity and effective separation for immiscible oil/oil systems. Furthermore, the BiOBr/RW fibers could serve as a filter to continuously separate oil/water mixtures with high flux velocity and removal rates (>93.9%) for water-soluble dye rhodamine B (RhB) simultaneously by directly activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in cyclic experiments. More importantly, the mechanism of simultaneous oil/water separation and RhB degradation was proposed based on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Considering the simple modified process and the waste RW as raw material, this work may open up innovative, economical, and environmentally friendly avenues for the effective treatment of wastewater contaminated with oil and water-soluble pollutants.

The investigation about the mechanism of crystal plane regulation on the generation of oxygen vacancies remains a challenge. In this paper, BiOBr/FeMoO 4 composites were synthesized by precise control of crystal plane growth, and it exhibited the enhanced concentration of oxygen vacancies due to lower formation energy of oxygen vacancies. The composite performs higher photo-Fenton-like ability for degrading oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC). Structural analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that crystal plane regulation induces significant changes in oxygen vacancy concentration. The BiOBr/FeMoO 4 /peroxydisulphate (PDS) /light system, which dominated by the non-radical pathway, degraded 96.8 % ± 1.0 % of OTC within 30 min. The activation mechanism of the system and the degradation pathway of OTC were elucidated. The intermediates in the degradation process of OTC were evaluated using liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS), toxicity evaluation software tool (T.E.S.T) and soybean germination experiments. This work offers novel insights into the pivotal role of crystal plane directional regulation in the quantitative generation of oxygen vacancies.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit a strong propensity for exciton generation upon photoexcitation compared to bulk counterparts. However, as exciton relaxation processes, intersystem crossing (ISC) and exciton dissociation always compete in the carrier dynamics. This study presents a strategy to decouple exciton dissociation and ISC by introducing a nitrogen-doped biochar (NBC) as the ISC center to modify Z-scheme heterojunction (BiOBr/BiOIO 3 , BB). NBC-BB achieved a 1.75 times interfacial driving force compared to BB and suppressed the exciton binding energy (E b ) from 107 meV to 85 meV. Moreover, due to the spontaneous incorporation of Br into NBC during the preparation process, the singlet and triplet energy level difference (ΔE ST ) was shortened by 0.079 eV to intensify ISC on NBC. The constructive collaboration of exciton dissociation and ISC guaranteed the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with strong redox potential and selectivity, achieving efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants under visible light. The bolstered oxygen adsorption indicated effective oxygen activation capability of NBC-BB, leading to a 1.4-fold and 3.1-fold increase in the generation efficiency of 1 O 2 and •O 2 − , respectively. This study also presented experiments on various influencing factors, cyclic stability, and a feasible continue-flow system, showcasing the stability and potential for the practical application.

In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NSCQDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) was fired in a muffle furnace in an air atmosphere, and finally, the ternary heterostructure of NSCQDs, C 3 N 4 and bismuth oxide bromide (BiOBr) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method (NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr). The morphology of the catalyst was observed through SEM and TEM. The chemical bonds were analyzed by XPS and FT-IR to further confirm that NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 were successfully attached to BiOBr. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized catalysts was studied by degrading RhB under simulated light source. The experiment results showed that under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of RhB by NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr within 20 min was as high as 99.9%, which was much higher than that of pure BiOBr (33.5%). The degradation curve was combined with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with a kinetic constant of 0.32578 min −1 , which was 17.7 times that of BiOBr (0.01837 min −1 ). Catalyst recycling tests showed that NSCQDs/C3N4/BiOBr had extremely high stability. The active species quenching test showed that \({\text{O}}_{2}^{ \cdot - }\) and 1 O 2 were the main active species during the photocatalytic process. The inhibition effect of NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 on BiOBr photogenerated carrier recombination was analyzed by photoluminescence and transient photocurrent tests. This study is expected to provide an attractive strategy for constructing efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for environmental remediation.
