Hierarchical Mo-doped S/BiOCl (MSB) heterostructures were successfully prepared by a facile one-step reflux method. The resulting samples were evaluated by XRD , SEM, TEM , DRS and XPS . The results obtained showed that MSB possessed an outstanding photo and/or thermocatalytic performance under near room-temperature for removal of methylene blue (MB), reaching up to 99.9 and 96.5% for photo/thermocatalytic degradation (PTD) and thermocatalytic degradation (TD), respectively. The hole/radical scavenger tests indicated holes and free radial were both participated in PTD and TD reactions, but the holes formed from degradation reactions were strongly considered as the most influential impact on conducting PTD and TD patterns rather than free radicals. Furthermore, the kinetics regarding PTD and TD routes were also monitored, preferentially fitting to Langmuir–Hinshelwood behavior. Briefly, this study may provide new insights into fabricating hierarchical heterostructures by in-suit one-step approach for decontamination of organic pollutants separately using PTD or TD.

The creation of a Z-scheme heterojunction is a sophisticated strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. In our study, we synthesized an In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl dual Z-scheme heterostructure by growing BiOCl nanoplates on the sheets of In 2 S 3 nanoflowers, situated on the surface of MnO 2 nanowires. This synthesis involved a combination of hydrothermal and solution combustion methods. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl composite exhibited notable photo reduction performance and photocatalytic stability. This was attributed to the pivotal roles of BiOCl and MnO 2 in the composite, acting as auxiliaries to enhance the electronic structure and facilitate the adsorption/activation capacity of CO 2 and H 2 O. The yield rates of CO, CH 4 , and C 2 H 4 over In 2 S 3 /MnO 2 /BiOCl as the catalyst were 3.94, 5.5, and 3.64 times higher than those of pure In 2 S 3 , respectively. Photoelectrochemical analysis revealed that the dual Z-scheme heterostructure, with its oxygen vacancies and large surface area, enhanced CO 2 absorption and active sites on the nanoflower/nanowire intersurfaces. Consequently, the dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway provided efficient channels for boosting electron transfer and charge separation, resulting in high C 2 H 4 , CH 4 , and CO yields of formed and exihibits an promising photoreduction rate of CO 2 to CO (51.2 µmol/g.h), CH 4 (42.4 µmol/g.h) and C 2 H 4 (63.2 µmol/g.h), respectively. DFT, in situ Diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption tests were employed to verify the intermediates pathway. The study proposed a potential photocatalytic mechanism based on these findings.

The photo-driven CO 2 reduction holds significant potential in facilitating carbon fuel conversion. However, the inefficiency of charge conversion severely limits its spractical applications. Herein, the charge transfer routeway was tailored in NiO/BiOCl-7 heterostructures via a transform from type-II to S-scheme for enhancing CO 2 photoreduction to CO. Such S-scheme NiO/BiOCl-7 heterojunctions were prepared by pH-modulation to optimize the energy band structure of BiOCl and introduce abundant oxygen vacancies. Surprisingly, the S-scheme NiO/BiOCl-7 heterojunctions exhibited a significantly enhanced production of CO (78.11 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) with an impressive selectivity of 97.1 %, representing a remarkable 1.7- and 4.3-fold improvement in CO yield compared to the type-II NiO/BiOCl heterojunctions and pure BiOCl samples, respectively. The in-situ spectral experiments and DFT calculations reveal that the superior CO production can be attributed to a lower energy barrier for COOH* and a smoother potential energy surface of the S-scheme heterojunction with abundant oxygen vacancies. This meticulous strategy of energy band modulation sheds light on the deliberate customization of Bi-based heterostructures with favorable charge transfer for highly effecient photocatalysis.

In recent years, oxygen vacancy (VO) engineering has become a research hotspot in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, an efficient GQDs/BiOCl-VOheterojunction photocatalyst was fabricated by loading graphene quantum dots (GQDs) onto BiOCl nanosheets containing oxygen vacancies. ESR and XPS characterizations confirmed the formation of oxygen vacancy. Combining experimental analysis and DFT calculations, it was found that oxygen vacancy promoted the chemical adsorption of O2, while GQDs accelerated electron transfer. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancy, GQDs, and dye sensitization, the as-prepared GQDs/BiOCl-VOsample exhibited improved efficiency for RhB degradation under visible-light irradiation. A 2 wt% GQDs/BiOCl-VOcomposite effectively degraded 98% of RhB within 20 min. The main active species were proven to be hole (h+) and superoxide radical (·O2−) via ESR analysis and radical trapping experiments. This study provided new insights into the effective removal of organic pollutants from water by combining defect engineering and quantum dot doping techniques in heterojunction catalysts.

In this study, a Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst CoWO 4 /CS/BiOCl-10 was constructed by hydrothermal synthesis for the efficient removal of norfloxacin (NOR) contaminants in water. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed that the hydroxyl group in the chitosan (CS) molecule was bonded with the oxygen atom on the surface of CoWO 4 through hydrogen bonding to form a directional charge transport channel, which greatly improved the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of CoWO 4 /CS/BiOCl-10, and the degradation rate was as high as 98.30 % within 90 min under 300 W xenon lamp irradiation. Optoelectronic measurements show that the interfacial potential difference drives electrons to migrate along the Z-path. Density functional theory (DFT) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) were used to identify intermediates in the NOR degradation process, revealing the degradation pathway of NOR through piperazine ring cleavage and defluorination. The kinetics of NOR degradation intermediates were revealed using two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) techniques. Rice seed germination experiments have shown that the degraded NOR solution is virtually non-toxic, greatly reducing the environmental impact. This study provides a new strategy for the development of efficient photocatalytic systems through the synergistic regulation mechanism of hydrogen bonding and heterojunction.

The photocatalytic conversion of CO₂ into value-added chemicals using solar energy is a crucial strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. However, existing semiconductor catalyst systems suffer from suboptimal conversion efficiencies due to inefficient charge separation and transfer. The precise modulating surface microenvironment of semiconductor catalyst contributes an effective approach to address these limitations in photocatalytic applications. This study proposes a precise dual-modification strategy to modulate the surface microenvironment by incorporating Co 2+ incorporation and in situ generating Bi sub-nanoclusters in ultrathin BiOCl nanosheets. This approach synergistically establishes spin-polarization effects and interfacial ohmic contacts, while enhancing the intrinsic built-in electric field. Consequently, it drives efficient charge separation and transfer. Mechanistic analyses via theoretical simulations and in situ experiments reveal that the engineered spin polarization facilitates electron transfer through aligned magnetic moments, while the formed ohmic contact eliminates interfacial potential barriers, collectively lowering the energy barrier for CO 2 * and COOH* formation. The optimized 3 %Co-BBOC catalyst demonstrates exceptional CO₂-to-CO conversion performance with a production rate of 58.25 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , representing a 6.6-fold enhancement over pristine BiOCl. The present work elucidates a dual-functional synergistic mechanism of modulating the surface microenvironment by integrating spin manipulation and interfacial engineering, providing fundamental insights for designing advanced photocatalytic systems with optimized charge transport and surface reaction dynamics.

A flower-like CeO₂/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed for efficient charge separation. • The catalyst degraded 99.6% RhB (600 mg/L), 93.3% CR (100 mg/L), and 90.3% TC (10 mg/L) under visible-light irradiation. • The photocatalyst achieved 98.9% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli . • DFT, ESR, and trapping experiments confirmed the Z-scheme charge-transfer mechanism. The construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance by promoting charge separation while maintaining a robust redox capacity. In this study, we present a flower-like CeO₂/flake-like BiOCl heterojunction (designated as 2-BC) synthesized using a simple method. 2-BC demonstrated remarkable efficacy in degrading high concentrations of Rhodamine B (RhB, 600 mg/L, 99.6%) and efficiently removed Congo Red (CR, 100 mg/L, 93.3%) and Tetracycline (TC, 10 mg/L, 90.3%). Additionally, it exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity, with a kill rate of 98.9% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli) under illumination, and notable stability, retaining 83.5% of its initial activity after five cycles. The superior performance of 2-BC was attributed to a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was supported by density functional theory calculations and radical trapping experiments. This mechanism ensures efficient charge carrier separation while preserving strong redox potentials in both semiconductors, thereby enhancing the generation of active species (•O₂⁻, h⁺, and •OH). Our findings suggest that 2-BC is a stable and highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst with significant potential for the treatment of organic and biological pollutants in aquatic environments. The ubiquitous accumulation of antibiotics and synthetic dyes in aquatic environments has emerged as a critical threat to the ecological integrity and human health. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis represents a sustainable strategy for decontaminating such pollutants; yet, its practical efficacy is often hampered by narrow light-harvesting ranges and rapid photogenerated carrier recombination. Herein, a ternary photocatalyst, namely, CDs/UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl (CUCl), was rationally constructed by integrating carbon dots (CDs) into a UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction. Serving as an efficient electron reservoir, the introduced CDs not only significantly extended the visible-light absorption range but also effectively suppressed carrier recombination. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized CUCl catalyst achieved remarkable degradation efficiencies of 87.2% and 98.8% for tetracycline and rhodamine B, respectively, outperforming the binary UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl heterojunction and pristine BiOCl. Radical trapping experiments and photocatalytic mechanism investigations revealed that photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (·O2–) were the dominant active species responsible for pollutant degradation. Moreover, the CUCl catalyst exhibited excellent structural stability and reusability, retaining more than 85% of its initial catalytic activity after four consecutive reuse cycles. This work provides a novel and viable strategy for fabricating high-efficiency, stable environmental photocatalysts via the synergistic integration of Z-scheme heterojunctions and carbon dot functionalization.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is currently regarded as a refractory pollutant. The development efficient degradation technologies remains a critical challenge owing to the strong stability of C-F bond. However, current photocatalytic approaches for PFOA degradation suffer from slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a series of ultrathin BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 (BiCN) was prepared using a hydrothermal method, and their PFOA degradation performance was evaluated. The most effective photocatalyst (BiCN-2) achieved a 92.3% PFOA removal rate within 30 min (rate constant k = 0.1059 min −1 ), with a corresponding defluorination efficiency of 24.8%. Specifically, the exposed (101) facets of BiOCl accelerate electron movement, whereas the BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction interface enhances the separation of photogenerated charges. Additionally, the metallic Bi nanoparticles acted as both electron bridges and sources of hot electrons via the surface plasmon resonance effect, further boosting the reaction. Superoxide radicals, photogenerated electrons, and photogenerated holes were identified as the main reactive species in the degradation reaction. Density functional theory was employed to determine the interaction mechanism between PFOA and the photocatalyst. This study provides insights into an efficient alternative for the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA.

BOC/COF S-scheme heterojunction significantly boosted charge separation efficiency. • The non-radical pathway predominated, facilitating efficient photocatalytic degradation. • Elevated 1 O 2 quantum yield was achieved via optimized charge transfer. • The reduction in toxicity was confirmed via the plant models and DFT calculations. • The non-radical-dominated and radical-assisted synergy achieved efficient TC degradation. The inefficiency of charge separation and the unselective nature of radical-based pathways severely limit the practical application of photocatalysis for water purification. Herein, a BiOCl/COF (BOC/COF) S-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed via ultrasonic assistance. Remarkably, the optimized S-scheme heterojunction significantly enhanced photo-generated carrier separation efficiency, which effectively promoted ROS generation and improved the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) (degradation rate: 91.6%). The research has found that non-radical pathways collectively accounted for 89.11% of the degradation activity, endowing the system with high selectivity. It is worth noting that the BC-20 membrane can efficiently eliminate TC in a continuous-flow wastewater treatment system. Furthermore, BC-20 can degrade TC in an enlarged reactor under natural sunlight irradiation. The three possible degradation pathways were analyzed through Fukui function and LC-MS. The toxicity of the TC solution after being treated with the BOC/COF S-scheme was evaluated using mung beans as a crop model. Through (in-situ) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and interfacial electric field (IEF) driving efficient 1 O 2 production were systematically elucidated. These findings not only deciphered the interface engineering-mediated non-radical generation mechanism in BOC/COF S-scheme photocatalysis but also advanced its practical application in aquatic environmental remediation. Herein, Ti-deficient TiO 2 was combined with oxygen-deficient BiOCl to construct a core-shell structured TiO 2 /BiOCl S-scheme heterojunction. The defect-engineered TiO 2 and BiOCl exhibited significantly enhanced tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency, which were 4.4 and 2.5 times higher than those over the defect-free TiO 2 (TiO 2 -R) and BiOCl (BiOCl-R) samples, respectively. The optimized TiO 2 /BiOCl-2 photocatalyst demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency, outperforming single BiOCl and TiO 2 by 3.2 and 2.9 times, respectively. In-depth explorations showed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity originated from the establishment of an interfacial electric field at the core/shell interface, the enhanced light utilization efficiency, and the established S-scheme charge transfer pathway. More importantly, TiO 2 /BiOCl-2 also manifested superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency when subjected to complex reaction environments. By taking into account the contributions of involved reactive species and produced intermediates, both the reaction mechanism and toxicity assessment were thoroughly explored. The present work showcases an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic efficiency by virtue of the synergy between core-shell heterojunction and defect engineering.

Upconversion luminescence (UCL) of chiral inorganic nanostructured composite material and their applications have been challenging. This paper reports a successful preparation of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped chiral inorganic nanostructured BiOCl/Zn composite material (D-BYE-Zn) using a hydrothermal method and subsequent air annealing. The D-BYE-Zn phosphor significantly increased the intensity of UCL compared with the Er 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped achiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (A-BYE) and chiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (D-BYE). Our study suggests that free electron leaps from the Zn fraction onto BiOCl may be responsible for the enhanced UCL. In addition, the temperature sensitive behavior of the D-BYE-Zn phosphor has been evaluated using the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) and non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Er 3+ and the maximum relative sensitivities (S R ) obtained are 0.95 % K −1 and 1.65 %K −1 (323 K). Our work provides a new strategy for constructing rare-earth doped chiral inorganic nanostructured composite materials to realize UCL enhancement while promising a wide range of applications in light source temperature measurement.
