In this study, a novel ternary hybrid CdS/SiO 2 /TiO 2 film was proposed as the phonoanode for the photocatalytic fuel cell. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV–vis absorption. The photoelectrochemical activity of the ternary hybrid electrode was characterized by the photocurrent-time transient response, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was shown that CdS/SiO 2 /TiO 2 yielded much higher photoelectrochemical activity than CdS/TiO 2 and bare TiO 2 did. The photoanode with CdS/SiO 2 /TiO 2 showed the highest photocurrent density of 4.6 mA cm −2 , exhibiting a 40% improvement over the conventional CdS/TiO 2 photoanode. The roles of SiO 2 and CdS in such a ternary configuration were elaborated. It was demonstrated that CdS could act as an excellent visible light captaturer to generate photo-induced charge carriers, and SiO 2 as a passivation layer to suppress the interfacial recombination of electrons and holes. Moreover, SiO 2 could allow for more CdS to be deposited at the photoanode owing to its high adsorption capacity . In addition, the effects of the SiO 2 content and the SILAR cycle time on the performance of the CdS/SiO 2 /TiO 2 photoanode were investigated. An optimal SiO 2 content of 10% could yield the best performance. Increasing the SILAR cycle time could improve the photoelectrochemical activity.

CdS is a photocatalyst known for its desirable bandgap and availability but it is limited by photocorrosion and inefficiency issues in practical applications. According to band engineering theory, regulating the width of bonding region that exists between cubic phase and hexagonal phase, we design a suitable phase junction and achieve effective separation of electron-hole pairs. Thus, the problems caused by photocorrosion and phase exclusion can be resolved. The optimal photocatalytic activity of the prepared material is 4.9 mmol h −1 g −1 with 41.5% quantum efficiency at the wavelength of 420 nm, which is 60 times higher than that of the initial samples (cubic or hexagonal phase), and keeps high photocatalytic stability. This novel construction approach can be useful in designing ideal band structures and matching the phase bandgap of other binary sulfides.

The Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/g-C3N4/CdS nanofiber sono-photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by an ordinary electrospining-chemical deposition method. The PAN/g-C3N4/CdS heterojunction nanofibers constructed with the CdS nanoparticles deposited on the PAN/g-C3N4nanofibers. The g-C3N4/CdS heterojunction increase of light absorption and the construction of heterojunction can depress recombination of charge carrier and PAN nanofibers improve the recyclability successfully. Finally, a highly effective photocatalytic activity was performed by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in visible light irradiation. Furthermore, an ultrasonic method is introduced into the sono-photocatalytic system to enhance the degradation efficiency of RhB ascribed to the synergistic effect of ultrasound.Keywords:PAN/g-C3N4/CdS heterojunction;low power ultrasound;sono-photocatalytic activity;nanofibers

Synergistically combining biological whole-cell bacteria with man-made semiconductor materials innovates the way for sustainable solar-driven CO 2 fixation, showing great promise to break through the bottleneck in traditional chemical photocatalyst systems. However, most of the biohybrids require uneconomical organic nutrients and anaerobic conditions for the successful cultivation of the bacteria to sustain the CO 2 fixation, which severely limits their economic viability and applicability for practical application. Herein, we present an inorganic-biological hybrid system composed of obligate autotrophic bacteria Thiobacillus thioparus ( T. thioparus ) and CdS nanoparticles (NPs) biologically precipitated on the bacterial surface, which can achieve efficient CO 2 fixation based entirely on cost-effective inorganic salts and without the restriction of anaerobic conditions. The optimized interface between CdS NPs and T. thioparus formed by biological precipitation plays an essential role for T. thioparus efficiently receiving photogenerated electrons from CdS NPs and thus changing the autotrophic way from chemoautotroph to photoautotroph. As a result, the CdS- T. thioparus biohybrid realizes the solar-driven CO 2 fixation to produce multi-carbon glutamate synthase and biomass under visible-light irradiation with CO 2 as the only carbon source. This work provides significant inspiration for the further exploration of the solar-driven self-replicating biocatalytic system to achieve CO 2 fixation and conversion.

A new kind of photoswitchable polymer nanoparticle is prepared using polymerizable alkenyl carbon dots (PCDs) and a spiropyran derivative, together with methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the monomer, and mediated by one-pot miniemulsion polymerization. Switching between two different wavelengths of emitted light can be realized by intraparticle fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The FRET efficiency could be easily controlled by the feed ratios of the two chromophores and the excitation wavelengths. UV and visible light can be applied to modulate the fluorescence emission of the prepared nanoparticles. Upon visible light irradiation, the nanoparticles emit blue-green fluorescence of the CDs while spiropyran is in its closed form (SP). UV irradiation of SP gives rise to an open-ring isomer (MC). An SP-to-MC photoisomerization triggers a CD-to-MC FRET, and the resulting nanoparticles emit red light. Their fluorescence could be reversibly switched between blue-green and red by using UV/vis light irradiation with excellent photoreversibility and high stability. In addition, the novel nanoparticles with reversibly photoswitchable fluorescence could be directly applied in rewritable fluorescence patterning and dual-color fluorescence imaging of living cells.

Semiconductor photolysis of aquatic hydrogen has become a research hotspot in recent years. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) photocatalyst has been drawn widespread interest due to good visible light absorption, proper energy band potential, and excellent electron-hole pair production rate and mobility. In this work, three morphologies of CdS were synthesized successfully using different cadmium salts and sulfur sources by solvothermal methods. Compared with CdS nanospheres and nanorods, CdS nanosheets photocatalyst could suppressed the photoogenic electron holes better, resulting its high photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity. CdS nanosheets with good photostability showed the fastest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate (12.37 mmol h −1 g −1 ) with the support of simulated solar-light irradiation. These results indicated that the excellent photocatalytic performance of CdS nanosheets may be related to its exposed high index (002) lattice plane, which was main photocatalytic active lattice plane. This work optimized the catalytic properties of materials by regulating the morphology and the exposure of different lattice planes, which were of great significance for solar energy capture and conversion. Nanomaterial shapes can have profound effects on material properties, and therefore offer an efficient way to improve the performances of designed materials and devices. The rational fabrication of multidimensional architectures such as one dimensional (1D)–two dimensional (2D) hybrid nanomaterials can integrate the merits of individual components and provide enhanced functionality. However, it is still very challenging to fabricate 1D/2D architectures because of the different growth mechanisms of the nanostructures. Here, we present a new solvent-mediated, surface reaction-driven growth route for synthesis of CdS nanowire (NW)/CdIn 2 S 4 nanosheet (NS) 1D/2D architectures. The as-obtained CdS NW/CdIn 2 S 4 NS structures exhibit much higher visible-light-responsive photocatalytic activities for water splitting than the individual components. The CdS NW/CdIn 2 S 4 NS heterostructure was further fabricated into photoelectrodes, which achieved a considerable photocurrent density of 2.85 mA·cm −2 at 0 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) without use of any co-catalysts. This represents one of the best results from a CdS-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell. Both the multidimensional nature and type II band alignment of the 1D/2D CdS/CdIn 2 S 4 heterostructure contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical activity. The present work not only provides a new strategy for designing multidimensional 1D/2D heterostructures, but also documents the development of highly efficient energy conversion catalysts.

Mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) as one kind of environmental pollutants has attracted more and more attentions due to its persistence, mobility and biological enrichment. In this study, a novel photoelectrochemical biosensor for Hg 2+ detection was constructed based on dye sensitization effect induced by Y-shaped DNA transformation as signal amplification strategy. Firstly, graphene oxide-ZnO-CdS nanohybrid (GO-ZnO-CdS) as photoelectric material was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method, and was employed to modify ITO electrode. Secondly, Y-shape DNA was labeled by Au NPs in the solution, and which crosslinked on the surface of GO-ZnO-CdS modified ITO electrode by carbodiimide coupling method, which resulted in the excitation energy transfer (EET) effect between Au NPs and CdS. Finally, in the presence of Hg 2+ , the structure of DNA on the modified electrode changed from Y-shape into hairpin accompanying the proximity of dye molecule based on T-Hg 2+ -T, which eliminated EET effect and triggered dye sensitization effect for enhancing photocurrent response. Under optimal conditions, the photocurrent linearly increased with the increasing of Hg 2+ levels in the range of 5 pM − 500 pM with the detection limit of 1:5 pM(LOD = 3σ blank / s ). More importantly, the developed biosensor showed the advantages of acceptable selectivity, repeatability and stability.

We report on solar cells based on CdS QD sensitized anatase TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures prepared via a facile and controlled hydrothermal process. To adjust the size of CdS QDs, the TiO2 surfaces were first treated with thiolactic acid which provides a binding site for Cd2+ ions. CdS QDs with controllable size are grown onto the TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures. The CdS QDs/TiO2 hierarchical heterojunction nanocomposites display a red shift from the ultraviolet to the visible light region with a longer wavelength for the absorption edge. The matching of band edges between CdS and TiO2 to form a semiconductor heterojunction plays an important role in effective separation of light induced electrons and holes, providing a promising photoanode for its wide absorption spectrum, high electron injection efficiency, and fast electron transference. Under UV-vis irradiation, both CdS and TiO2 are excited. Under visible light irradiation, photons are captured by CdS QDs, with the photogenerated electron–hole pairs rapidly separated into electrons and holes at the interface between TiO2 and CdS QDs. In addition to this, more photoelectrons are generated from TiO2 by harvesting UV photons. TiO2 collects the photoelectrons from CdS and passes them through to the back contact. The holes (from both CdS and TiO2) generated in the process are transferred to the solid–liquid interface. Under one sun illumination, the solar cells based on CdS QDs/TiO2 hierarchical heterojunction nanocomposites with a smaller average size of 7.6 nm for CdS QDs show a maximum short circuit current density of 6.09 mA cm−2 and a conversion efficiency of 3.06%. The performance improvement of the solar cells based on CdS QDs/TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures can be attributed to the unique microstructure characteristics and the bandgap energy matching between the CdS QDs and TiO2.

A novel N-doped graphene/CdS hollow sphere nanocomposite photocatalyst was synthesized by a simple, template-free one-pot method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photocatalytic degradations of methylene blue and salicylic acid were carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites under visible light irradiation. The N-graphene/CdS nanocomposites exhibited excellent stability and high photocatalytic activity, exceeding those of graphene oxide/CdS hollow sphere nanocomposites and pure CdS hollow spheres. This excellent photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite was due to N-graphene acting as an excellent electron acceptor and transporter, thus reducing charge carrier recombination. It was also found that • OH acted as the main reactive species in the degradation of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation.

Manganese (Mn) redox cycling and phase variation reactions play a crucial role in natural water settings. Rhodochrosite (MnCO 3 ), a mineral commonly found in oxygen-deprived environments, develops a surface oxide film upon exposure to oxygen. This Mn oxide film significantly influences the fate of nanoparticles within its proximity. Employing atomic force microscopy (AFM), this study examined the growth of the Mn oxide film on MnCO 3 and the encapsulation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs). Results revealed the gradual development of a nanometer-thick oxide film on MnCO 3 over time in aerobic conditions , with the rate of film formation correlated to the solution's ionic strength. The oxide film on MnCO 3 encapsulated pre-adsorbed CdS-NPs, either through embedding or covering. Intriguingly, CdS-NPs were found to enhance the growth of the Mn oxide film, contributing to the fixation of CdS-NPs. Furthermore, an ultrasonic desorption protocol verified the stability of CdS-NPs encapsulated by the Mn oxide film on MnCO 3 . This study elucidates a novel mechanism for immobilizing CdS-NPs in aqueous oxidizing conditions, providing valuable insights into the behavior and distribution of toxic nanoparticles in environmental contexts. Environmental Implication This study classifies cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs) as "hazardous material" due to the inherent toxicity of cadmium, posing risks to both ecological and human health. The research addresses environmental concerns by exploring the interaction between CdS-NPs and manganese (Mn) redox cycling. The formation of a Mn oxide film, encapsulating CdS-NPs, suggests a mechanism for limiting the dispersion of these hazardous nanoparticles in oxidizing water. This provides valuable insights for managing the environmental impact of CdS-NPs, offering a proactive strategy to mitigate their adverse effects in natural systems.

Fenton-like reaction based on Fe 3 S 4 /H 2 O 2 system has been applied in pollutants degradation, but the obvious drawbacks largely hinder its practical uses. Fe 3 S 4 /CdS composites were prepared using a hydrothermal method and tested for photo-Fenton catalytic activity. The degradation activity of the composites was tested using tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) as an organic pollutant. The study investigated the effects of the mass ratio of Fe 3 S 4 and CdS, catalyst dosage, temperature, pH change, and H 2 O 2 dosage on the degradation of TCH. The study found that the removal rate of TCH by Fe 3 S 4 /CdS was 2.34 and 3.53 times higher than that of pure Fe 3 S 4 and pure CdS, respectively, at 35 °C when the mass ratio of Fe 3 S 4 to CdS was 1:1 and the pH value was 4.2. The Fe 3 S 4 /CdS composites widened the pH range for the Fenton reaction and still showed good degradation of TCH under neutral conditions. The trapping experiments of the active substances revealed that the main active radicals were •O 2 - , while •OH, h + , and e - play a minor role in the degradation of TCH. The catalytic reaction performance was improved by the synergistic effect of CdS and Fe 3 S 4 . Five cycle experiments were conducted on the Fe 3 S 4 /CdS composites, demonstrating their stability and reproducibility.
