Xiangyu Zhao,Yue Wu,Wei Lan,Siying Che,Yanmin Rao,Xinyi Min,Yi Zhao,Hengye Chen,Wanjun Long,Yuanbin She,Haiyan Fu

BACKGROUND Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) is commonly used as a preservative and antioxidant in food processing; however, its residues can pose significant health risks. The accurate and rapid detection of SO 2 residues in food is crucial for ensuring food safety and protecting consumer health. In this study, we have developed a novel multicolor fluorescent sensor system that combines N -acetyl- l -cysteine-modified CdTe quantum dots with a trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium hydroxyphenylbenzoxazole ionic liquid. RESULTS The developed dual-response sensor exhibits a remarkable fluorescent color transition, shifting from blue to purple, pink and finally yellow, in response to SO 2 concentrations ranging from 10 to 800 mg kg −1 in acid-distilled samples. This color transition enables the semiquantitative visual detection of SO 2 residues, providing a rapid and intuitive assessment method. Furthermore, a smartphone application integrated with advanced machine learning algorithms has been developed to facilitate the precise quantification of SO 2 through the red–green–blue analysis of fluorescence images, achieving a limit of detection of 9.22 mg kg −1 . The sensor system exhibited high accuracy with recovery rates ranging from 94.86% to 109.28% for complex food matrices. CONCLUSION The proposed multicolor fluorescent sensor represents a significant advancement in the intelligence, simplicity and efficiency of SO 2 residue detection in food samples. This method also offers a valuable reference for improving food safety and quality assurance. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Visual paper-based sensor for the highly sensitive detection of caffeine in food and biological matrix based on CdTe-nano ZnTPyP combined with chemometrics

Chen Hengye,Liu Rui,Guo Xiaoming,Deng Gaoqiong,Xu Lu,Zhang Lei,Lan Wei,Zhou Chunsong,She Yuanbin,Fu Haiyan

Caffeine naturally occurs in tea and cocoa, which is also used as an additive in beverages and has pharmacological effects such as refreshing, antidepressant, and digestion promotion, but excessive caffeine can cause harm to the human body. In this work, based on the specific response between nano zinc 5, 10, 15, 20-tetra(4-pyridyl)-21H-23H-porphine (nano ZnTPyP)-CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and caffeine, combined with chemometrics, a visual paper-based sensor was constructed for rapid and on-site detection of caffeine. The fluorescence of QDs can be quenched by nano ZnTPyP. When caffeine is added to the system, it can pull nano ZnTPyP off the surface of the QDs to achieve fluorescence recovery through electrostatic attraction and nitrogen/zinc coordination. The detection range is 5 × 10 −11 ~3 × 10 −9  mol L −1 , and the detection limit is 1.53 × 10 −11  mol L −1 ( R 2  = 0.9990) ( S / N  = 3). The paper-based sensor constructed exhibits good results in real samples, such as tea water, cell culture fluid, newborn bovine serum, and human plasma. Therefore, the sensor is expected to be applied to the rapid instrument-free detection of caffeine in food and biological samples. Graphical abstract

On-site, rapid and visual determination of Hg2+ and Cu2+ in red wine by ratiometric fluorescence sensor of metal-organic frameworks and CdTe QDs

Yuning Yang,Wei Liu,Jie Cao,Yiwei Wu

A ratiometric sensor of MOF/ CdTe QDs was constructed by physically mixing CdTe QDs ( λ em  = 605 nm) with MOF (Fe-MIL-88NH 2, λ em  = 425 nm). Under an UV lamp ( λ ex  = 365 nm), orange-red CdTe QDs is gradually quenched with increasing levels of Hg 2+ or Cu 2+ , while blue MOF is unchanged, accompanying with a visual change from bright pink to blue fluorescence. Hence, a new method for determining Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ by MOF/CdTe QDs sensor is established, whose detection limits are 0.22 ng mL −1 for Hg 2+ (2.1% RSD) and 0.26 ng mL −1 for Cu 2+ (1.1% RSD), respectively. In addition, on-site, rapid and visual determination of Hg 2+ /Cu 2+ in red wine without any pretreatment is realized by using a MOF/CdTe QDs paper-based sensor. For Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ , the semi-quantitative detection ranges of the paper-based sensor are both 10 ~ 5000 ng mL −1 , implying that it has great application value in analyzing Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ in liquid samples.

Ratiometric Fluorescent Paper-Based Sensor Based on CdTe Quantum Dots and Graphite Carbon Nitride Hybrid for Visual and Rapid Determination of Cu2+ in Drinks

Kaili He,Xin Zhan,Lian Liu,Xiaohong Ruan,Yiwei Wu

A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence sensor of CdTe QDs/GCNNs for on-site and rapid analysis of Cu 2+ has been established by mixing physically CdTe QDs and graphite carbon nitride (GCNNs). Two emissions peaks of CdTe QDs at 572 nm and GCNNs at 436 nm are both excitated at 340 nm. Under a UV lamp, fluorescent of traffic yellow CdTe QDs is linearly quenched by Cu 2+ (as the detection signal), while blue GCNNs remains unchanged (as the reference), resulting in a distinguishable color change gradually from pink yellow to blue. The limit of detection (LOD) of this new sensor for Cu 2+ is as low as 0.47 ng mL −1 with 1.4 % RSD. The established method has been successfully applied to detection of Cu 2+ in various drinks with satisfactory results. Moreover, a paper-based sensor, which has been prepared by soaking cellulose acetate membrane in CdTe QDs/GCNNs sensor solution, has a wide semiquantitative detection range for Cu 2+ (0.01 ~ 5.0 μg mL −1 ). It has realized successfully on-site and rapid determination of Cu 2+ in red wine without any pretreatment procedure and is of great promotion and application value in determination of Cu 2+ in liquid samples.

Highly Sensitive Fluorescent Determination of Chromium(VI) by the Encapsulation of Cadmium Telluride Quantum Dots (CdTe QDs) into Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8)

Yufeng Hu,Junpeng Zhang,Gang Li,Hanwen Xing,Minghuo Wu

Chromium (VI) [Cr(VI)] is considered to be a serious environmental pollutant because of its highly carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. In this study, we fabricated fluorescent probes for Cr(VI) detection by encapsulating cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The obtained composites, designated as CdTe QDs@ZIF-8, were able to sense Cr(VI) through the combined action of fluorescence dynamic and static quenching. Under the optimum conditions, the obtained CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 composites showed high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cr(VI). The fluorescence intensity of the CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 composites decreased as the concentration of Cr(VI) increased across from the range of 2.5 to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.06 μM. The CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 composites were successfully applied to determine Cr(VI) in tap water and seawater samples; the average recoveries of Cr(VI) at different spiking concentration levels ranged from 94.0% to 104.1% with relative standard deviations below 4.8%. This work provides a novel fluorescent detection method for Cr(VI) and discrimination between Cr(VI) and Cr(III), which can be used for rapid recognition and determination of Cr(VI) in complex matrices.

Rapid detection of trace malachite green using a fluorescence probe based on signal amplification through electrostatic self-assembly of CdTe QDs and polystyrene microsphere

Ji Yang,Zheng-Zhong Lin,Zhi-Yong Huang

A fluorescence probe was delicately designed for the detection of malachite green (MG) in water and fish samples. Through the electrostatic self-assembly of CdTe QDs on the surface of polystyrene (PS) microspheres, the fluorescence signal was amplified. After grafting molecularly imprinted film, the fluorescence probe of MIP@PS@CdTe was fabricated and applied to the detection of MG based on fluorescence quenching . The linear range of MG detection was 0.01–20 μmol L − 1 , and the detection limit was 4.7 nmol L − 1 (3 σ , n = 9) which was much lower than those of the previous reports. The recoveries of MG in aquaculture water and fish samples ranging from 87.6% to 105.4% illustrated that the detection by MIP@PS@CdTe probe was accurate and reliable.

A facile one-step photochemical strategy for preparation of polyacrylamide functionalized CdTe(S) quantum dots and their application in sensitive determination of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene

Shenghong Yang,Jie Liu,Yu Chen,Jinxiu Guo,Lei Zhao,Xuan Wei,Xianglu Peng,Qiaosheng Pu

Rapid development of nanomaterials has extended a new horizon for sensitive and easy-to-use sensors. Robust determination of nitro-explosives with nano-sensors has attracted great attentions due to the increasing safety concern. In this work, strongly fluorescent polyacrylamide coated CdTe(S) quantum dots (CdTe(S)@PAM QDs) with good dispersity and stability have been prepared by a facile, effective and reliable photochemical method through simple one-step UV irradiation. The prepared QDs were systematically characterized and the results proved that the prepared material could be readily used for the sensitive and selective sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The influence of experimental conditions on the analytical performance was investigated. With a QD concentration of 3.13   μmol/L, the calibration curve of TNT was linear up to 0.48   μmol/L, and a LOD (S/N   =   3) of 2.1   nmol/L was attained. In combination of simple analyte extraction, no interference was observed from common inorganic ions and organic substances. TNT in samples with complicated matrices was successfully determined. The standard addition recoveries obtained from water and soil samples were in a range of 93.2–106.3%.

Molecular spectroscopic studies on the interactions of rhein and emodin with thioglycolic acid-capped core/shell CdTe/CdS quantum dots and their analytical applications

Dan Li,Shaopu Liu,Yizhong Shen,Jidong Yang,Youqiu He

Water-soluble thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped core/shell CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized. The interactions of rhein and emodin with TGA-CdTe/CdS QDs were evaluated by fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the high fluorescence intensity of TGA-CdTe/CdS QDs could be effectively quenched in the presence of rhein (or emodin) at 570 nm, which may have resulted from an electron transfer process from excited TGA-CdTe/CdS QDs to rhein (or emodin). The quenching intensity was in proportion to the concentration of both rhein and emodin in a certain range. Under optimized conditions, the linear ranges of TGA-CdTe/CdS QDs fluorescence intensity versus the concentration of rhein and emodin were 0.09650–60 µg/mL and 0.1175–70 µg/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9984 and 0.9965, respectively. The corresponding detection limits (3σ/S) of rhein and emodin were 28.9 and 35.2 ng/mL, respectively. This proposed method was applied to determine rhein and emodin in human urine samples successfully with remarkable advantages such as high sensitivity, short analysis time, low cost and easy operation. Based on this, a simple, rapid and highly sensitive method to determine rhein (or emodin) was proposed. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Photoelectrochemical and fluorescent dual-mode sensitive detection of circulating tumor cells based on aptamer DNA-linked CdTe QDs/Bi2MoO6/CdS “double Z-scheme” system

Shihao Duan,Haipeng Zhang,Zhaopeng Liu,Jian Li,Liming Gao,Hong Jiang,Jidong Wang

Herein, a novel dual-mode biosensor integrating photoelectrochemical (PEC) and fluorescence (FL) sensing detection was developed for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) based on aptamer DNA-linked CdTe QDs (Apt-CdTe QDs)/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CdS “dual Z-scheme” sensing system. Apt-CdTe QDs were assembled on FTO/CdS/Bi 2 MoO 6 /cDNA electrode through hybridization with cDNA, resulting in the formation of a double Z-scheme CdS/Bi 2 MoO 6 /CdTe heterostructure that significantly enhanced the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, thereby improving photocatalytic efficiency. Upon the presence of MCF-7 cells, Apt-QDs were captured and subsequently released from the captured electrode, leading to a decrease in photocurrent and an increase in fluorescence intensity, thus enabling effective PEC-FL dual-mode detection. The detection of CTCs exhibited a linear relationship within the concentration range from 50 to 100000 cells mL −1 with limit of detection of 1 cell mL −1 in both PEC and FL modes. This approach effectively corrected systematic errors, improved detection accuracy and sensitivity, and held great potential in the clinical detection of CTCs.

Colorimetric and fluorescence dual-mode sandwich biosensor for visual detection of multiple foodborne pathogens with concanavalin A modified magnetic nanoparticles and CdTe quantum dots

Wen-Bo Zhao,Xiao Liang,Zi-Tao Zhong,Ji-Tao Li,Dan Mei,Juan Yang,Qin-Qin Han,Ya-Ling Yang

Salmonella ( Sal ) and Escherichia coli ( Esc ) are two common foodborne pathogens that cause significant harm to humans. Therefore, strict control of Esc and Sal in food and the environment is essential. Herein, we developed a colorimetric/fluorescence dual-mode strategy for the detection of two pathogenic bacteria. Taking advantage of the characteristic that concanavalin A (ConA) can capture bacteria via the recognition of the sugar residues, it was coupled with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to form MNPs@ConA as the capture probe. In addition, the antibody (Ab) can specifically recognize the bacteria, and after coupling with CdTe quantum dots (QDs), QDs@Ab was employed as the signal probe. This study shows that MNPs can catalyze 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue oxTMB to be recognized by the naked eye, while QDs exhibited strong fluorescence, which can also be observed by the naked eye, allowing for a clear differentiation in Sal and Esc detection. The signal was linearly correlated with the target bacteria with a satisfied visualized results. The practicability of the method was verified using milk tea, milk, and juice samples, with recovery rates ranging from 93.5 % to 106 %. The feasibility of this method for the detection of Sal and Esc was validated, and it poses a significant potential for food safety monitoring.

A novel fluorescent sensor based on CdTe quantum dots and DTAB-modified Au nanoparticles through aggregation-induced fluorescence recovery for the detection of l-lysine

Xinyi Min,Yi Zhao,Yuhang Xiao,Xiangyu Zhao,Yaner Zhao,Dilinigaer Wumaier,Dajuan Dai,Hengye Chen,Wanjun Long,Wei Lan,Haiyan Fu

BACKGROUND l -Lysine ( l -Lys), an essential amino acid, serves as a core indicator for evaluating food nutritional quality. Although naturally abundant in ingredients such as soybeans, its content must be precisely regulated during processing to meet nutritional standards. Moreover, improper processing and storage can induce l -Lys degradation or conversion, compromising both nutritional value and food safety. Given its pivotal role in nutritional balance and quality assurance, there is an urgent need for simple, rapid, and highly sensitive analytical methods for l -Lys detection. RESULTS An innovative ‘off–on’ fluorescent sensor tailored for food-related applications was developed, utilizing CdTe quantum dots as the fluorophore and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide self-assembled citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (DTAB-AuNPs) as the quencher for the rapid detection of l -lys. During the detection process, l -lys served as a binding bridge, facilitating the aggregation of DTAB-AuNPs. This reduction inhibited fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the fluorophore and the quencher, leading to fluorescence recovery. The degree of aggregation-induced fluorescence recovery exhibited a linear correlation with the concentration of l -lys within the range of 0.5–10 μ m ( R = 0.999). This newly developed sensing method demonstrated an impressive limit of detection of 3.22 n m . It was successfully applied to detect l -lys in various food-relevant samples, including milk, soybean, plasma and compound amino acid oral solution used in food-related nutritional supplements. CONCLUSION The results highlight its great potential for practical applications in multiple fields such as quality control of dairy and agricultural products, as well as clinical diagnosis related to nutritional status assessment. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

A Ratiometric Fiber Optic Sensor Based on CdTe QDs Functionalized with Glutathione and Mercaptopropionic Acid for On-Site Monitoring of Antibiotic Ciprofloxacin in Aquaculture Water

Xiao-Lin Yuan,Xiao-Yi Wu,Miao He,Jia-Ping Lai,Hui Sun

A ratiometric fluorescence fiber-optical sensor system (RFFS) merging a Y-type optical fiber spectrometer and CdTe QDs composite functionalized with glutathione and mercaptopropionic acid (GMPA@CdTe-QDs) for highly selective and on-site detection of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in environmental water samples was designed. Our preliminary results suggested that the red fluorescence of the synthesized GMPA@CdTe-QDs was effectively quenched by CIP. Based on this, the RFFS/GMPA@CdTe-QDs system was successfully fabricated and used for highly selective and rapid detection of CIP on site in the concentration range from 0 to 45 μM with the detection limit of 0.90 μM. The established method exhibited good interference resistance to the analogues of CIP and provided a great potential platform for real-time detection of CIP residues in environmental water. In addition, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of GMPA@CdTe-QDs by CIP was also investigated by means of temperature effect, fluorescence lifetime, ultraviolet (UV) visible absorption, and fluorescent spectra. Our results suggested clearly that the red fluorescence of GMPA@CdTe-QDs was quenched by CIP via the photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) mode. Keywords:ratiometric fluorescence;optical fiber sensor;GMPA@CdTe-QDs;ciprofloxacin;on-site detection
