Inhalable Ce Nanozyme-Backpacked Phage Aims at Ischemic Cerebral Injury by M1-Microglia Hitchhiking

Zhixin Zhu,Lulu Jin,Qiaoxuan Wang,Haifei Shi,Ke Cheng,Zhengwei Mao

There is a desperate need for precise nanomedications to treat ischemic cerebral injury. Yet, the drawbacks of poor delivery efficiency and off-target toxicity in pathologic parenchyma for traditional antioxidants against ischemic stroke result in inadequate brain accumulation. M13 bacteriophages are highly phagocytosed by M1-polarized microglia and can be carried toward the neuroinflammatory sites. Here, a bio-active, inhalable, Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 -backpacked-M13 phage (abbreviated as CZM) is developed and demonstrates how M13 bacteriophages are taken up by different phenotypes’ microglia. With the M1 microglia's proliferating and migrating, CZM can be extensively and specifically delivered to the site of the ischemic core and penumbra, where the surviving nerve cells need to be shielded from secondary oxidative stress and inflammatory cascade initiated by reactive oxygen species (ROS). With non-invasive administration, CZM effectively alleviates oxidative damage and apoptosis of neurons by eliminating ROS generated by hyperactive M1-polarized microglia. Here, a secure and effective strategy for the targeted therapy of neuroinflammatory maladies is offered by this research.

Oxidation behavior and electrical properties of metal interconnects with Ce-doped Ni–Mn spinel coatings

Yong Zhang,Yutao Zhang,Caihong Wu,Yiting Yang,Qiang Li,Yongnan Chen

To improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance and electrical conductivity of ferritic stainless steels , protective Ce-doped NiMn 2 O 4 spinel coatings were fabricated on the surface of SUS430 steel by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The phase structure and microstructure of Ce-doped NiMn 2 O 4 in both powder and coating forms were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The high-temperature oxidation of the NiMn 2 O 4 spinel coating before and after Ce doping in the air at 800 °C for 168 h was studied by weight gain experiments. The area-specific resistance (ASR) of coatings was measured by a standard four-probe method. It was found that the Ce-doped NiMn 2 O 4 spinel powder displayed a stable structure, high crystallinity, fine grain size, and decreased agglomeration when the Ce content was fixed at 0.05 mol∙L −1 . The oxidation kinetics of NiMn 2 O 4 -coated SUS430 steel before and after Ce doping obeyed a parabolic law with parabolic rate constants of 4.58 × 10 −15  g 2  cm −4  s −1 and 1.83 × 10 −15  g 2  cm −4  s −1 , respectively. When oxidized at 800 °C for 50 h, the ASR value of the coated samples before and after Ce doping stabilized at about 15.2 mΩ∙cm 2 and 14.5 mΩ∙cm 2 , respectively. This work demonstrated that the Ce-doped NiMn 2 O 4 spinel coating improved the high-temperature oxidation resistance and the electrical conductivity of metal interconnects.

The Role of Medium Acid Sites Tuned by Ce Adding in Moderate-Temperature NH3-SCR

Bie Xuan,Jiao Kunling,Gong Chunqin,Qu Baozhong,Liu Daokuan,Ma Shuangchen

To develop highly efficient NH 3 -SCR catalysts with a wide temperature range, catalysts based on MnAlO x and Cerium elements loading with various mixing ratios were prepared for selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH 3 . The special role of cerium was demonstrated by the surface structure characteristics and unique catalytic performance, involving the surface-active sites and compositions analysis. Interestingly, the strengthening of Mn 1.2 Al 0.8 Ce a O x on both acid sites, especially medium acids and strong acids, were clearly manifested. Meanwhile, the strong interaction between MnAlOx and CeO 2 enabled favorable electron transfers from MnOx to CeO 2 while generating more oxygen vacancies and active oxygen species, consequently accelerating the redox cycle. The results illustrate that the NOx conversion and the selectivity of N 2 can be improved with more medium acids tuned by appropriate Ce adding. However, an opposite effect will appear by excessive addition. In addition, the reaction mechanisms at different acid sites are revealed. Our findings, therefore, provide a strategy for the rational design of moderate-temperature NH 3 -SCR catalysts through adding-induced component engineering of composite materials. Graphic Abstract Mn 1.2 Al 0.8 Ce a O x Catalysts with different surface features were fabricated by an environment-friendly method. The strong interaction between MnAlOx and CeO 2 was systematically illustrated. Meanwhile, the importance of medium acids was convincingly revealed. And the reaction mechanisms at different acid sites were demonstrated. These provide a strategy for the rational design of moderate-temperature NH 3 -SCR catalysts through adding-induced component engineering of composite materials.

Hydrothermal temperature-regulated interface effects in Ce@Mn core-shell catalysts for efficient formaldehyde removal

Dan Chen,Kan Li,Hanyue Bao,Ming Zhai,Zhong Wang,Xiaozhi Wang

In this paper, a series of Ce@Mn core-shell catalysts were synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method. Hydrothermal temperature significantly influenced the structure formation of catalysts. The Ce@Mn-150 catalyst, synthesized at 150 °C exhibited a well-defined core-shell structure. Moreover, it converted approximately 35 % of HCHO into CO 2 and H 2 O at ambient temperature, and achieved 90 % conversion of HCHO at 90 °C. Through structural characterization of the catalysts, distinct morphological differences were observed across all samples. The Ce@Mn-150 catalyst, which demonstrated the optimal catalytic activity, exhibited the most complete core-shell structure. The formation of the core-shell structure promoted the generation of Ce-Mn interfacial effects, which in turn modulated the interactions between Ce and Mn species . Elemental valence state characterization revealed that the well-defined core-shell structure facilitated the generation of Mn 3+ and Ce 3+ species, along with enhanced concentrations of surface-adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) and oxygen vacancies (O v ), which collectively enhanced HCHO adsorption and activation. H 2 -TPR results indicated that the core-shell structure enhanced the low-temperature reducibility of the catalyst and preserved abundant oxygen vacancies. This study revealed the influence of core-shell structures and intermetallic interactions at the core-shell interface on the catalytic performance of the catalyst, providing insights for designing efficient non-noble metal catalysts for HCHO removal.

Ce-MOF coated with polyethyleneimine-modified chitosan hydrogel offers synergistic removal of an anionic dye

Wei-jia Li,Zhi-bo Zhang,Wan-jin Yan,Zhi Chen,Cong-ming Tang,Li Chang

Adsorption technology is essential for water remediation and resource recovery to reduce environmental pollution. Although Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit outstanding adsorption capabilities, their high preparation cost hinders their wide application. Alternatively, chitosan (CS) hydrogels offer wastewater treatment at an affordable cost. Herein, polyethyleneimine-modified CS hydrogel coated with MOF (Ce-BTC/CS-PEI) was prepared as a high-capacity sorbent for methyl orange (MO) sequestration. A comprehensive characterization of the Ce-BTC/CS-PEI composite was carried out, involving morphological and elemental analysis (SEM-EDS), crystal phase identification (XRD), surface area and porosity measurements (BET), surface charge evaluation (zeta potential), molecular structure determination (FTIR), and surface chemical state analysis (XPS). The increased interfacial contact area and the positively charged zeta potential of Ce-BTC/CS-PEI enabled efficient adsorption of MO in MO/methylene blue mixtures. The experimental data demonstrated strong agreement with the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm and second-order rate equations. Ce-BTC/CS-PEI demonstrated exceptional uptake performance, reaching 819.67 mg·g −1 after 18 h. Thermodynamic analysis showed that adsorption was a natural exothermic procedure. After four cycles, the material retained 70% of its adsorption efficiency. Therefore, Ce-BTC/CS-PEI exhibits excellent capability as an excellent, ecologically friendly, and inexpensive adsorbent for selective MO removal.

Molecular-level design of S-scheme COF/Ce-MOF heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 generation

Yan Ge,Caiyi Fan,Qiyue Zhang,Hui Yang,Saisai Yuan,Bin Xu

In situ synthesis of S-scheme COF/Ce-MOF heterojunctions significantly enhances photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production under ambient conditions. The directional charge separation, precise band alignment, and synergistic dual active sites of the heterojunction enable efficient, stable, and selective H 2 O 2 generation. The CRM (Ce-MOF/COF) heterojunction delivers an H 2 O 2 yield that is 11.2-fold higher than pristine Ce-MOF and 3.1-fold higher than pure COF. Moreover, the CRM heterojunction maintains excellent productivity over a 6-h reaction period. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed not only the elemental composition and chemical states at the heterojunction interface but also the interfacial electronic redistribution and band alignment responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the combined experimental and theoretical results confirmed the presence of strong interfacial coupling, the formation of an internal electric field, and the establishment of an S-scheme charge transfer pathway, all of which contribute to efficient charge separation and the preservation of high redox potentials, thereby enabling superior H 2 O 2 generation activity. Overall, this work not only deepens the understanding of MOF-based photocatalysts but also provides valuable design principles for constructing next-generation heterojunction materials with superior efficiency in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production for environmental remediation.

Defect-rich Ce–Zr–O solid-solution nanozymes with phosphatase activity for selective phosphate sensing

Juliana Gaithan Kauno,Haili Wei,Shiyu Xia,Wenping Gao,Zohaib Saddique,Fenghua Li,Fengxia Wu,Guobao Xu,Hsien-Yi Hsu,Ziaur Rehman,Yu Tian,Wenxin Niu

The phosphate ion (PO 4 3− ) is essential for growth, especially skeletal development. However, high PO 4 3− levels can signal health problems, such as hyperphosphatemia, which indicates chronic kidney disease due to reduced filtration, leading to serum phosphate buildup. Therefore, there is a pressing need for an accurate and convenient method for PO 4 3− analysis. Considering the significance of its detection, several techniques based on nanozymes have been employed, and among them, fluorometry is one of the most robust and efficient techniques. In terms of nanozymes, current developments suffer from low catalytic activity and non-specific inhibition. To address these issues, we present a solid-solution strategy for synthesizing Ce–Zr–O nanozymes with a defect-rich polycrystalline structure, providing a highly specific and efficient sensing platform. The approach is simple and cost-effective, yielding Ce–Zr–O nanozymes with excellent uniformity, controllable size, and morphology. Incorporating Zr 4+ into the CeO 2 lattice induces abundant oxygen vacancies and structural heterogeneity, which synergistically enhance the phosphatase-like activity by enhancing Lewis acid catalysis and aiding the nucleophilic hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate (4-MUP). Notably, phosphate (PO 4 3− ) ions specifically bind to Zr sites, altering their electronic environments and attenuating catalytic performance. In exploiting this selective inhibition, we developed a fluorometric phosphate assay with high selectivity and sensitivity. The Ce–Zr–O nanozymes detected phosphate with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.061 nM, allowing precise measurement of phosphate in urine. This study presents a generalizable defect-engineering method for Ce–Zr–O nanozymes, creating a reliable platform for interference-resistant biosensing in biological fluids.

Interfacial Ce/Cu engineering enables selectivity switching between methane and C2 products during CO2 electroreduction

Siqi Liu,Zhaoliang Wu,Yuanrui Li,Jun Yu,Lei Zhang

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) provides a sustainable route for transforming CO 2 into value-added chemicals, yet achieving controllable selectivity remains a major challenge. Here, we constructed Ce-rich and Cu-rich Ce-Cu interfaces (CeCu 0.55 O x and CeCu 2.67 O x ) to elucidate the interfacial regulation of CO 2 RR pathways. CeCu 0.55 O x delivers a CH 4 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 45% at –400 mA/cm 2 , whereas CeCu 2.67 O x achieves over 50% FE toward C 2 products. Operando Raman measurements reveal comparable Cu oxidation states during CO 2 RR, indicating that interfacial composition rather than Cu valence dominates selectivity. The Ce-rich interface accelerates H 2 O dissociation, increasing *H coverage and promoting sequential hydrogenation of *CO to CH 4 . In contrast, the Cu-rich interface strengthens *CO adsorption and increases its surface coverage, steering C−C coupling toward *OC-CO and enabling C 2 product formation. This work clarifies how tuning the Ce/Cu ratio modulates *H and *CO intermediate coverages, providing a mechanistic basis for designing oxide-metal interfaces with programmable CO 2 RR selectivity.

Mechanism and kinetic study of aerobic baeyer–villiger oxidation over a shaped Ce–Sn catalyst

Aojie Jia,Bo Yuan,Min Yang,Ruolin Wang,Zhanke Wang

Aerobic Baeyer-Villiger (B-V) oxidation reaction in the presence of aldehydes is a promising environmental-friendly synthetic route for the synthesizing ε-Caprolactone. Bimetallic oxides catalysts have been regarded as a highly efficient heterogenous catalysts to boost the oxidation capability of O 2 . However, the lack of kinetic parameters for the bimetallic oxide catalysts hinders the large-scale production of ε-Caprolactone. Herein, a shaped Ce–Sn bimetallic oxide was utilized as model catalysts for the mechanism and kinetic study of aerobic B-V oxidation reaction. The effects of the shaping process on the physical structure, surface valence state distribution, and microstructure morphology of the catalyst were systematically examined. The shaped catalyst exhibits a higher selectivity and conversion rate than the powder counterparts due to the increase of surface area. The reaction mechanism was investigated through stepwise experiments, radical trapping experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Based on the mechanism study results, a stepwise kinetic model involving peroxidation of benzaldehyde, B-V reaction and oxidation of benzaldehyde was established and demonstrated good predictive capability for aerobic B-V oxidation reaction. This study provides stepwise kinetic parameters for the aerobic oxidation of cyclohexanone in the presence of benzaldehyde, which would significantly promote the engineering application of the aldehyde/oxygen catalytic oxidation process.

NO-responsive microgel encapsulated Ce-MOF nanozymes loaded with gastrodin for synergistic rheumatoid arthritis therapy

Xiang Zou,Yicheng Liu,Pingli Dong,Haoyu Qiu,Rui Wen,Lanling Dai,Linzhu Yu,Fang Lan,Yao Wu

A multifunctional nanocomposite, composed of Ga-loaded Ce-MOF core and NO-responsive microgel shell, is designed to integrate effective drug loading, controlled drug release and multi-target synergy to therapy RA. • The Ga-loaded Ce-MOF core functions dually as a high-capacity drug carrier of natural compound and a nanozyme with superoxide dismutase/catalase-like activities for reactive oxygen species (ROS) elimination, effectively alleviating oxidative stress damage in RA and establishing initial synergistic effects with Ga intrinsic anti-inflammatory activity. • The NO-responsive microgel shell acted as pathological cue-triggered “gatekeeper”, enabling on-demand drug release specifically at inflammatory sites while concurrently scavenging excessive NO to synergetic treat RA. • The nanocomposite significantly inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines, alleviates cartilage degradation and bone erosion by eliminating excessive RONS, promoting the repolarization of macrophages from M1 to M2 phenotypes, and regulating the MAPK and cGMP/PKG signaling pathways. • This “one-stone-three-birds” strategy that integrating natural drug therapy, stimuli-responsive drug release with synergistic RONS scavenging and immune homeostasis modulation, offers an innovative and efficient approach for treatment of RA and other inflammatory diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by persistent inflammatory injury and progressive destruction of joints. The elimination of excessive reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and the restoration of immune homeostasis have emerged as promising therapeutic strategies for RA. Gastrodin (Ga), a bioactive natural constituent derived from Gastrodia elata, possesses inherent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities, whereas its clinical translation and in vivo utility are substantially hampered by inferior environmental stability and uncontrollable drug release behavior. Herein, we fabricated a nitric oxide (NO)-responsive nanocomposite (NCMG) consisted of a Ce-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) nanozyme loaded with Ga and encapsulated by a NO-responsive microgel shell for synergistic RA treatment. The Ce-MOF serves dual functions as a high-efficiency drug carrier and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger, while the outer microgel shell enables precise on-demand Ga release and efficient NO depletion. In vitro experiments and in vivo validation based on adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rat models demonstrated that NCMG markedly inhibits the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, induces macrophage polarization from the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, and effectively alleviates joint inflammation and bone erosion. Transcriptomic profiling further showed that Ga treatment was associated with downregulation of Il1b and Tnf and alterations in MAPK related gene expression, suggesting the involvement of this pathway in its anti-arthritic activity. This work develops an integrated nanotherapeutic platform combining natural active compounds with multi-component synergistic effects, offering a feasible strategy for RA intervention.

Oxygen-vacancy-rich Ce-doped MnO2/MWCNTs supported Pt catalyst for efficient photoelectrocatalytic methanol oxidation

Wenjing Zhou,Fan Zhang,Liming Xu,Danqin Li,Jie Li,Jiashuo Lv,Yufei Hu,Meisi Yu,Furui Lin,Danhua Zhu,Jian Hou,Weiqiang Zhou

Ce-doped MnO 2 with oxygen vacancies modulates Pt electronic structure. • Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs shows 9.69 A mg Pt -1 for methanol oxidation under light. • Electron-rich Pt surface shows weakened CO adsorption at 0.94 V vs. RHE. • Synergy of defect engineering and photocatalysis boosts MOR durability. The development of efficient and CO-tolerant anode catalysts is critical for advancing direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, we report a rationally designed photoelectrocatalyst comprising ultrafine Pt nanoparticles anchored on Ce-doped MnO 2 supported by highly conductive multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs). Ce incorporation induces abundant oxygen vacancies within the amorphous MnO 2 matrix, which modulate the local electronic structure and facilitate strong metal-support interactions. This results in electron-enriched Pt surfaces with weakened CO adsorption, as evidenced by negative shifts in Pt 4f binding energies and improved CO stripping performance. Under simulated solar illumination, the Pt/Ce-MnO 2 /MWCNTs catalyst delivers a mass activity of 9.69 A mg Pt -1 toward methanol oxidation, representing a 46.6% enhancement over that under dark conditions and exceeding undoped Pt/MnO 2 /MWCNTs and commercial Pt/C catalysts. This performance is attributed to the synergistic interplay of (i) oxygen-vacancy-mediated electronic modulation, (ii) efficient charge transport via the MWCNT network, and (iii) photoexcited charge carriers from Ce-MnO 2 that actively participate in oxidizing poisoning intermediates. The catalyst also exhibits CO tolerance with an onset potential of 0.94 V and good long-term durability, retaining 82.3% of its initial activity after 500 cycles. This work demonstrates strategies for designing high-performance DMFC anodes through defect engineering and light harvesting. Ce–Mn Synergy in Zr-Stabilized Three-Dimensionally Ordered Macromesoporous Oxides for Superior Soot Combustion

Yuan Jiang,Xiong Jing,Ma Yaxiao,Quan Xiaolong,Wei Yuechang,Xu Linsheng,Li Yuanfeng,Liu Jian,Zhao Zhen

A series of three-dimensionally ordered macromesoporous (3DOMM) Ce x Mn 0.3-x Zr 0.7 O δ catalysts were synthesized by an evaporation-induced self-assembly combined with a colloidal crystal template (EISA-CCT) method. These catalysts exhibit excellent soot combustion activity and possess an intact 3DOMM structure. The electronic synergy between Mn and Ce was investigated. Mn facilitates the reduction of Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ and the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby increasing active oxygen species, while Ce oxidizes Mn 2+ to Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , which enhances the intrinsic redox ability and NO oxidation. Among the tested samples, the Ce 0.15 Mn 0.15 Zr 0.7 O δ catalyst exhibits activity comparable to that of noble-metal catalysts and excellent stability, which can be attributed to the maximized Ce–Mn synergy and the intact 3DOMM morphology.
