Amino-Functionalized Multilayer Core–Shell Mesoporous Organosilica Nanospheres for Cr(VI) Removal

Xin Lai,Dan Sun,Yi Hou,Yi Zuo,Yubao Li,Li Zhang

Developing low-cost and highly efficient adsorbents for the removal of toxic heavy metal ions is the subject of intensive research with the increasingly stringent water pollution control standards. In this paper, three types of amino-functionalized multilayer core–shell mesoporous organosilica nanospheres (MCMONs) are synthesized using an indirect cocondensation method for Cr(VI) removal applications. Results show that amino groups are successfully immobilized on the nanospheres and these amino-functionalized MCMONs exhibit unique organic–inorganic multilayer core–shell structures. When used as adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal, the N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine functionalized MCMONs exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity of 279.92 mg g −1 at initial Cr(VI) concentration of 150 mg L −1 . This is about 20% greater than the highest Cr(VI) adsorption capacity previously reported for other core–shell silica-based adsorbents, demonstrating the great potential of MCMONs in Cr(VI) removal applications.

Highly efficient CdS/SbVO4 composites for visible-light-driven Cr(VI) reduction

Hanlu Fang,Mengying Lü,Taohai Li,Feng Li

Heavy metal contamination is a grave environmental concern due to its severe implications for human health and ecosystems, causing carcinogenic and teratogenic effects. This study addresses this pressing issue by exploring the synthesis and application of CdS/SbVO 4 composites as effective photocatalysts. These composites were synthesized by a streamlined two-step hydrothermal method, with investigations conducted on varying molar ratios. The composite with a molar ratio of 0.2:1 demonstrated superior Cr(VI) photoreduction properties under visible light irradiation, exhibiting an efficiency quadruple that of pure SbVO 4 . This enhancement in photocatalytic activity is credited to the augmented separation of electrons and holes facilitated by the integration of narrow band gap materials within the composite. Electrochemical tests indicated the electron transfer mechanism and identified the primary active centers of the samples. The detailed photocatalytic mechanism of the composite was further discussed, grounded on insights derived from free radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance analyses.

Highly efficient hexavalent chromium removal on polyethylenimine@NH2-MIL-101(Cr) composite

Zhenpeng Li,Dongmei Yan,Jun Li,Ziwei Mai,Fuchuan Huang

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is regarded as a water pollutant because of its high toxicity in aquatic environments. In this study, polyethyleneimine-functionalised NH2-MIL-101(Cr) (PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr)) was fabricated by a facile wet impregnation method, and its effectiveness at removing Cr(VI) from wastewater was systematically investigated. As suggested by the experimental findings, pH was a significant determinant of Cr(VI) uptake by the fabricated PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr). Preferable depiction of adsorption system was achievable with the Langmuir adsorption model and the pseudo-order 2 kinetic model. At 288, 298, and 308 K, the highest adsorbability values were 241.55, 310.56, and 408.16 mg g−1, respectively. Processes like electrostatic attraction, reduction and chelation helped promote the Cr(VI) elimination. SO42− ions had a relatively large impact on the Cr(VI) adsorption compared with other coexisting ions such as NO3−, Cl− and H2PO4−1. Because of its properties of high adsorption capacity and Cr(VI) detoxification, the potential of PEI@NH2-MIL-101(Cr) in the Cr(VI) elimination from wastewater appears to be promising.

Improved humification and Cr(VI) immobilization by CaO2 and Fe3O4 during composting

Li Chen,Zhigang Yi,Yaoning Chen,Yuanping Li,Hongjuan Jiang,Jun Wang,Yanrong Chen,Yaoqin Nie,Mengwei Luo,Qianruyu Wang,Wei Zhang,Yanting Wu

The current research studied how Fe 3 O 4 nanomaterials (NMs) and CaO 2 affect humification and Cr(VI) immobilization and reduction during the composting of oil-tea Camellia meal and Cr-contaminated soil. The results showed that Fe 3 O 4 NMs and CaO 2 successfully construct a Fenton-like reaction in this system. The excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) demonstrated that this Fenton-like treatment increased the generation of humic acids and accelerated the humification. Meantime, RES-Cr increased by 5.91 % and Cr(VI) decreased by 16.36 % in the treatment group with CaO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 NMs after 60 days. Moreover, the microbial results showed that Fe 3 O 4 NMs and CaO 2 could promote the enrichment of Cr(VI) reducing bacteria, e.g., Bacillus , Pseudomonas , and Psychrobacter , and promote Cr(VI) reduction. This study gives a novel view and theoretical reference to remediate Cr(VI) pollution through composting.

Cr(VI) induced hepatocyte apoptosis through the CTH/H2S/Drp1 signaling pathway

Jie Zhou,Xin Zheng,Chen Xi,Xinyi Tang,Yinjie Jiang,Minjuan Xie,Xiaoyi Fu

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a highly hazardous heavy metal with multiple toxic effects. Occupational studies indicate that its accumulation in humans can lead to liver damage. However, the exact mechanism underlying Cr(VI)-induced hepatotoxicity remains unknown. In this study, we explored the role of CTH/H 2 S/Drp1 pathway in Cr(VI)-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and liver injury. Our data showed that Cr(VI) triggered apoptosis, accompanied by H 2 S reduction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in both AML12 cells and mouse livers. Moreover, Cr(VI) reduced cystathionine γ-lyase (CTH) and dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1) S-sulfhydration levels, and elevated Drp1 phosphorylation levels at Serine 616, which promoted Drp1 mitochondrial translocation and Drp1-voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) interactions, ultimately leading to mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. Elevated hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) levels eliminated Drp1 phosphorylation at Serine 616 by increasing Drp1 S-sulfhydration, thereby preventing Cr(VI)-induced Drp1-VDAC1 interaction and hepatotoxicity. These findings indicated that Cr(VI) induced mitochondrial apoptosis and hepatotoxicity by inhibiting CTH/H 2 S/Drp1 pathway and that targeting either CTH/H 2 S pathway or Drp1 S-sulfhydration could serve as a potential therapy for Cr(VI)-induced liver injury.

Cr-Doped TiO2 Catalyzing Fast Hydrogen Absorption of MgH2 at Subzero Temperatures

Jiajing Zhu,Hui Wang,Yuqi Zhai,Liangjun Huang,Jie Cui,Liuzhang Ouyang,Min Zhu,Jacques Huot

MgH2 is a promising solid-state hydrogen storage medium with a high hydrogen capacity and low cost, but it suffers from high hydrogen sorption temperatures. In this work, Cr-doped TiO2 solid solution nanocatalysts were synthesized and demonstrated to significantly reduce the hydrogen sorption temperatures and pressure of MgH2. The Ti(5Cr)O2 catalyzed MgH2 releases over 6.1 wt % of H2 at 200 °C, and even at 175 °C, 2.62 wt % H2 can be desorbed. The dehydrogenation activation energy is greatly reduced to 85.3 ± 8.7 kJ/mol, which is ∼49.7 kJ/mol less than that observed for pure MgH2. The dehydrogenated product can absorb 4.5 wt % of H2 within 10 s at a low temperature of −20 °C and back pressure of 30 bar, or the hydrogen uptake content can reach 4.81 wt % under 5 bar and 75 °C. The mechanism study indicates that the Cr-doped TiO2 can markedly reduce the adsorption energy and dissociation energy barrier of H2 molecules and greatly enhance the dissociation ability of H on the catalyst surface. This work demonstrates the potential of modified TiO2 as a cost-effective and efficient catalyst for Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.

Deciphering bio-Pd0 mediated aerobic-intracellular/anaerobic-extracellular Cr(VI) reduction pathways

Jian Gao,Yuqi Shi,Minglu Tang,Yuancai Chen

Chromate bioreduction is a promising bioremediation strategy, but its application in wastewater treatment is limited by the Cr(VI) biotoxicity, particularly due to the generation of Cr(VI)-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). To mitigate these adverse effect, this study synthesized bio-Pd 0 in Citrobacter freundii to modulate distinct Cr(VI) aerobic/anaerobic reduction pathways. With the incorporation of bio-Pd 0 , aerobic and anaerobic Cr(VI) specific removal rate increased by 18.1–21.2 and 51.5–87.9 times, respectively. The genomics, RT-qPCR, respiratory inhibition experiments, ROS levels and antioxidant enzyme activity assays demonstrated that bio-Pd 0 enhanced intracellular Cr(VI) aerobic bioreduction mainly via upregulating the chromate multi-electron reductase (Cr-MER) (related with YieF, NfsA and NemA), together with the energy-dependent resistance system (antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and catalase, efflux pump Emr, DNA repair protein RecG). Cr-MER and resistance system effectively reduced the generation and accumulation of ROS, respectively. For anaerobic conditions, bio-Pd 0 facilitated hydrogenase-mediated short respiratory chain (S-chain) to reduce Cr(VI) extracellularly (related with HypE, RutF and OmcG), avoiding ROS generation and the energy consumption of the intracellular detoxification system, and maximized the energy utilization for Cr(VI) extracellular reduction. This study provides a new strategy for Cr(VI) bioreduction and elucidates the underlying mechanism.

The synergetic removal of Cr(VI) and TC on nZVI/MoS2 composites

Guangyu Xu,Han Chen,Jingjing Cai,Baowei Hu,Linfa Bao

The contamination of heavy metals and antibiotics represents one of the most serious environmental issues. In this study, the synergistic removal of chromium (Cr(VI)) and tetracycline (TC) by nZVI/MoS 2 composites was investigated to evaluate the removal performance of nZVI-based composites. The characterizations showed that the addition of MoS 2 increased the dispersion of nZVI, provided multiple electron-rich active sites and facilitated the electron transfer of photocatalysis. The addition of TC significantly enhanced the Cr(VI) removal rate, increasing it from 60 % to 80 % within 10 min. The catalytic reaction rate of nZVI/MoS 2 increased from 0.0046 to 0.0163 min −1 . Furthermore, the presence of Cr(VI) also improved the photodegradation efficiency of TC. Based on XPS and EPR analyses, the synergistic removal of Cr(VI) and TC was mainly attributed to enhanced electron transfer promoted by the presence of TC, which accelerated the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Surface complexation modeling further confirmed that Cr(VI) removal by nZVI/MoS 2 involved both adsorption and reduction processes. These results are anticipated to inform the design of more efficient nZVI-based composites for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Grain boundary rotation-mediated strengthening in nano-columnar cr-based hard coatings

Shao-rong Bie,Bao-wei Zhao,Ding-shun She,Zhi-qiang Fu,Jia-jie Kang,Xiao-yong Ren

To investigate the hardening mechanisms of CrN-based hard coatings, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to correlate nanoindentation-induced deformation with microstructural evolution. Among the investigated coatings, CrAlN exhibits the highest hardness and Young's modulus (41.2 GPa/402.8 GPa), outperforming CrSiN (30.5 GPa/336.2 GPa) and CrN (26.7 GPa/305.7 GPa). The superior performance of the CrAlN is attributed to a coordinated deformation mechanism involving ∼9° deflection of columnar grains under compression loading, which facilitates stress redistribution while maintaining structural continuity. Additionally, stress-induced phase transformations at acute-angle grain boundaries—from FCC CrAlN to HCP Cr 2 N and FCC AlN—further enhance strain accommodation, contributing to an improved strength-toughness balance. In contrast, CrSiN coating develops internal crack formation accompanied by Cr 2 N phases. While these transformations increased hardness, they also introduced embrittlement, compromising ductility. The CrN coating, lacking both solid-solution strengthening and grain refinement, displayed extensive trans-granular fracture and grain disintegration, indicative of limited capacity for stress delocalization. These findings provide mechanistic insights into the structure–property relationships of CrN-based coatings and offer design guidelines for the development of advanced wear-resistant coatings with tailored mechanical responses.

Isolated Cr Active Centers in the Beta Zeolite Framework for Propane Dehydrogenation

Zhiqiang Qiu,Zhong-Pan Hu,Junyu Liu,Jingfeng Han,Shiyu Xia,Min Li,Yang Zhao,Jingrun Chen,Svetlana Mintova,Yingxu Wei,Zhongmin Liu

Conventional supported metal catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) face critical challenges due to sintering-induced deactivation at high reaction temperatures. Herein, we develop a series of highly stable atomically dispersed metal-Beta catalysts by embedding single metal atoms (such as V, Cr, Fe, Zn, and Ga) into the dealuminated H-Beta zeolite framework. Unlike the pristine H-Beta zeolite with Brønsted acid sites, the embedded metals possess a distorted tetrahedral structure and typical Lewis acidic properties, which exhibit good C–H bond activation rather than C–C bond activation observed on Brønsted acid sites. Among these metal-Beta zeolites, the Cr-Beta zeolite with an ultralow density of ∼128 framework atoms per Cr atom exhibits notable performance in PDH. Through HAADF-STEM, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and isotope labeling FTIR, the local coordination environment of framework-embedded Cr species is unambiguously identified as a distorted tetrahedral geometry {(≡SiO)3Cr···(HO–Si≡)} with three Cr–O–Si bonds and one Cr···OH–Si linkage. Kinetic investigations and deuterium-labeling results demonstrate that propane activation occurs on isolated Cr Lewis sites with adjacent O atoms that facilitate the reception and release of hydrogen species. These findings provide valuable strategies for the rational design of supported metal catalysts for alkane activation and offer great insights into recognizing the local coordination structures of heteroatoms in zeolites.

Highly Tunable Near-Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in Cr-Doped Layered Td-WTe2

Li Yang,Hao Wu,Liang Zhang,Wenfeng Zhang,Luying Li,Tappei Kawakami,Katsuaki Sugawara,Takafumi Sato,Gaojie Zhang,Pengfei Gao,Younis Muhammad,Xiaokun Wen,Boran Tao,Fei Guo,Haixin Chang

The discovery of type-II Weyl semimetal states in layered transition metal dichalcogenides Td-WTe 2 indicates great potential for novel electronic, spintronic, and quantum devices. Theoretically, the interaction between the topological states and the magnetic ordered states of Td-WTe 2 enables the modulation of Weyl semimetal states by an external magnetic field. However, currently, ferromagnetism in layered Td-WTe 2 is still elusive and rarely observed. In this research, ferromagnetic order into WTe 2 using magnetic chromium (Cr) doping with a two-step Te flux strategy is introduced. The Curie temperature ( T c ) and the ferromagnetic moment are well tuned with a Cr doping concentration. The T c of the Cr-doped layered Td-WTe 2 could be regulated from 182 to 283 K, which is close to room temperature. The saturation magnetic moment could be changed from 2.26 to 4.20 emu g –1 , which is stronger than most values reported for these materials. Most intriguingly, the Cr-doped layered Td-WTe 2 single crystals still exhibit semimetallic behavior and they possess very large magnetoresistance with obvious Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations and an anomalous Hall effect. The findings offer feasible ways to induce and tune ferromagnetic orders in layered Td-WTe 2 and thus to control its topological phase with external magnetic fields.

Fiber balloon shaped SPR sensor for specific detection of Cr(VI) ions

Chunlan Liu,Zichun Zhao,Yabin Shao,Yong Wei,Ziqiang Zhang,Chao Guo,Zhihai Liu

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), as a highly toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal ion, poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Therefore, specific detection of it is of great significance. Based on this, this article proposes a balloon shaped fiber SPR sensor with microsphere structure for specific detection of hexavalent chromium ions. The balloon structure facilitates the formation of insertable sensing probe, and the microsphere structure located on one side of the balloon structure can adjust the incidence angle of light in the sensing area to enhance the sensitivity of the sensor, resulting in a maximum refractive index sensitivity of 5068 nm/RIU. Modifying 4-mercaptoethylpyridine on the surface of the gold film of the sensor can achieve specific recognition of Cr(VI). The experimental results indicate that the balloon shaped SPR sensor with microspheres proposed in this paper has a detection limit of as low as 0.57ng/mL for Cr (VI) in the detection range of 1ng/mL-100μg/mL, with a detection time of 3 minutes, providing a new method for rapid, low concentration, and specific detection of Cr(VI).
