Magnetic relaxation switching (MRS) biosensors have been recognized as useful analytical tools for a range of targets; however, traditional MRS biosensors are limited by the “prozone effect”, resulting in a narrow linear range and low sensitivity. Herein, we proposed a paramagnetic Cu 2+ -induced magnetic resonance tuning (MRET) strategy, based on which Cu 2+ ions and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were adopted to construct a Cu–MNP-mediated MRS (Cu–M-MRS) immunosensor with Cu 2+ ions acting as a quencher and MNPs as an enhancer. An Fe 3 O 4 @polydopamine-secondary antibody conjugate was prepared and used to correlate the amount of Cu 2+ ions to the target concentration through an immunoassay. Based on the immunoreaction, the Cu–M-MRS immunosensor enabled the sensitive detection of chlorpyrifos (0.05 ng/mL, a 77-fold enhancement in sensitivity compared with the traditional MRS immunosensor) and Salmonella (50 CFU/mL). The proposed MRET strategy effectively improved the sensitivity and accuracy of the MRS immunosensor, offering a promising and versatile platform for food safety detection.

Dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid, is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. However, its misuse as a performance-enhancing drug in sports has raised concerns among regulatory authorities. To address this issue, an electrochemical sensor based on Fe 3 O 4 /polyaniline (PANI)-Cu(II) microspheres and hematite nanoparticles was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of dexamethasone. The sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of dexamethasone due to the synergistic effect of the high conductivity and large surface area of the Fe 3 O 4 /PANI composite microspheres, the electrocatalytic properties of the loaded copper(II) ions, and the enhanced electron transfer of the hematite nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions, the sensor showed a wide linear range of 0.05–50 μM, with a detection limit of 0.015 μM. The sensor also demonstrated good selectivity, reproducibility (RSD = 3.2 %, n = 5), and long-term stability (92 % retention after 4 weeks). Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied for the determination of dexamethasone in spiked human serum and urine samples, with recoveries ranging from 97.5 % to 103.5 % and RSDs less than 3.5 %.

Copper(II) complexes are very promising candidates for platinum-based anticancer agents. Herein, three Cu (II) complexes ( 1 – 3 ) containing 1,8-naphthalimide ligands were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, elemental analysis, ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction (complex 3 ). In addition, a control compound (complex 4 ) without 1,8-naphthalimide ligand was synthesized and characterized. The in vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized complexes against five cancer cell lines and one normal cell line was evaluated by MTS assay. The results displayed the antitumor activity of complexes 1 – 3 was controlled by the aliphatic chain length of ligands, their cytotoxicity was in the order 3 > 2 > 1 , giving the IC 50 values ranging from 2.874 ± 0.155 μM to 31.47 ± 0.29 μM against five cancer cell lines. Complex 4 showed less activity in comparison with complex 1 – 3 . Notably, complexes 1 – 3 displayed much higher selectivity (SI = 2.65 to 10.16) compared to complex 4 (SI = 1.0), indicated that the introduction of 1,8-naphthalimide group not only increased the activity of this series of compounds but also enhanced their specific selectivity to cancer cells. Compound 3 induced apoptosis in cancer cells and blocked the S-phase and G2/M of cancer cells. The interaction with DNA of complexes 3 and 4 was studied by UV/Vis spectroscopic titrations, competitive DNA-binding experiment, viscometry and CD spectra. The results showed that complex 3 interacted with DNA in an intercalating mode, but the interaction mode of compound 4 with DNA was electrostatic interaction.

The development of microfluidic flow injection analysis (FIA) system for simultaneous and real-time detection of multiple metal ions is of great importance for environmental monitoring, food safety and industrial field. In this work, a multiplexed microfluidic chip based FIA system was fabricated for simultaneous determination of three metal ions, by using Fe(III), Mn(II) and Cu(II) as models. The multiplexed microfluidic chip based FIA system is composed of three parts, including a multi-channel FIA system for solution manipulation, a group of microfluidic chips for reagents mixing and reaction, and one fiber optic spectrometer for fast and real-time absorbance signal detection. The sample solution and chromogenic reagents were injected into the microfluidic chips to carry out specific colorimetric reactions. Fe(III), Mn(II) and Cu(II) reacts with 5-sulfosalicylic acid, formaldoxime, and bis(cyclohexanone) oxalyldihydrazone, respectively, to generate orange, ember and blue colored solution with peak absorbance at 420 nm, 450 nm, and 600 nm, respectively. The absorbance signal of the generated three channels of solution can be sequentially detected by using only one mini spectrometer. The linear detection range for Fe(III), Mn(II) and Cu(II) is 0.1–20 mg/L, 0.1–12 mg/L and 0.2–12 mg/L, respectively. The limit of detection for Fe(III), Mn(II) and Cu(II) is 0.07, 0.02 and 0.1 mg/L respectively. And the limit of quantification for Fe(III), Mn(II) and Cu(II) is 0.2, 0.07 and 0.3 mg/L, respectively. The recoveries of spiked Fe (III), Mn (II), and Cu (II) in real water samples are between 95.3 % to 106 %. Finally, the developed microfluidic chip based FIA system was successfully applied to simultaneous determination of three metal ions in environmental water samples and zinc smelting solution from zinc hydrometallurgy industry with satisfied results.

Green and high-performance biomass-based adsorbents have a good application prospect for the removal of heavy metals. At present, the preparation of chitosan/lignin biomass adsorbents mainly adopts dissolution-drying method, and the obtained adsorbents show relatively poor adsorption performance for heavy metals. To overcome this problem, a novel chitosan/lignin hydrogel (CSL) is prepared by a simple one-pot method through the Mannich reaction. Research findings show that the hydrogels present higher adsorption selectivity for Pb(II) and Cu(II) than other common heavy metals. Among them, the optimal hydrogel CSL1 shows unexpectedly ultrafast adsorption rate for Pb(II) and Cu(II) with equilibrium time of only 1 min and 2 min. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacities of CSL1 for Pb(II) and Cu(II) are 139.86 and 98.71 mg·g −1 , respectively. Compared with the reported adsorption materials related to chitosan or lignin, the CSL1 has the advantages of simple preparation process, considerable adsorption capacity, and short adsorption equilibrium time. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism is investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results prove that the adsorption mechanism is chemical complexation. This work not only contributes to the advancement of hydrogel-based adsorbents, but also holds significant industrial potential for addressing water pollution issues and promoting sustainable development.

Starch intake is the main cause of postprandial hyperglycemia. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hesperetin-copper (II) complex [Hsp-Cu(II)] on the physico-chemical properties and digestibility of gelatinized corn starch (GCS). It was found that with the addition of 1.44 mg/mL Hsp-Cu(II), the digestion rate of GCS decreased from 87.0% to 52.2%, the rapidly digestible starch content reduced from 22.7% to 14.4%, and the resistant starch content increased from 18.1% to 55.0%, suggesting that Hsp-Cu(II) decreased the digestion rate of GCS by increasing the content of resistant starch. The analysis of X-ray diffraction, rheology and differential scanning calorimetry showed that Hsp-Cu(II) increased the crystallinity, viscosity, storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G′′) and thermal stability of GCS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy found that Hsp-Cu(II) bound with GCS through hydrogen bonds. In addition, scanning electron microscopy showed that Hsp-Cu(II)‒GCS complex possessed a denser structure, thicker crystalline flakes and thinner amorphous flakes in comparison with GCS. Therefore, Hsp-Cu(II) may inhibit the digestion of GCS by changing the physicochemical properties and increasing the content of resistant starch of GCS, and inhibiting the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase at the same time by hindering the binding of GCS to the enzymes. These findings have demonstrated the potential ability of Hsp-Cu(II) to lower the level of postprandial blood glucose. This study may provide new insights into the development of Hsp-Cu(II) as a novel anti-diabetic nutritional supplement.

The development of adsorbents to remove heavy metal ions from water with high adsorption capacity and recyclable performances has always been the focus and challenge of current research. A new type of high-efficiency heavy-metal adsorbent, (graphene oxide/carboxymethyl cellulose)-acrylamide (GO/CMC-AM) was prepared in this paper. The adsorbent was prepared through graft copolymerisation by aqueous solution polymerisation. The results showed that CMC, AM, and GO are successfully grafted to form a three-dimensional network structure. The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the isotherm adsorption curve was highly consistent with the Langmuir model. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of (GO/CMC)-AM for Cu (II) reached 289.7 mg/g. After 5 adsorption cycles, the removal rate of Cu (II) still remains as high as 75.1%. Overall, (GO/CMC)-AM exhibits rapid, efficient, and stable adsorption performance, highlighting its broad application potential in treating heavy-metal wastewater.

Although the low molecular weight poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenyl oxide) (LMW-PPO) has been extensively applied in the field of 5G communication, the complicated procedures involved in the synthesis of LMW-PPO and efficient recovery of the homogeneous catalysts are still challenging nowadays. In this study, five ionic liquids (ILs) have been successfully synthesized, and LWM-PPO is directly synthesized using different Cu(OAc) 2 -ILs complexes as catalysts. Among them, Cu(OAc) 2 - IL(a) not only exhibits the high yield of LWM-PPO (83.68%, M n =3.6✕10 3 ) with the low 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethyl-4,4’-diphenoquinone (DPQ) yield (0.12%) and polydispersity index (PDI, 1.39) in methanol, but also maintains high stability after being recycled for 5 times. In addition, with increasing H 2 O contents in the system from 1.0% to 5.0%, the M n values of PPO decrease from 2.9✕10 3 to 2.4✕10 3 with the narrow PDI values in the range of 1.22-1.45, indicating that trace H 2 O effectively promotes the formation of binuclear Cu(II) complex between Cu(OAc) 2 ·H 2 O and ILs, which then polymerizes 2,6-dimethylphenol (DMP) to LMW-PPO. The synthesized LMW-PPO exhibits high thermostability ( T d5% =427.07-430.52°C), low glass transition temperature ( T g =167.6-180.3°C), and low dielectric constant ( D k =2.14-2.64, 1 GHz) and dielectric loss ( D f =2.83✕10 -3 -4.91✕10 -3 , 1 GHZ), indicating that it is more appropriate to be used in the field of 5G communication. This study provides new insight on the importance of ILs in direct synthesis of LMW-PPO with high performances.

Usually, Cu(II) cannot effectively activate peracetic acid (PAA), but it was observed that the high concentration of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process could notably promote the decoloration of rhodamine B (RhB) in the preliminary experiment. Therefore, the mechanism on the enhanced effect of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process for RhB decoloration was investigated in detail in this work. With the addition of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process, it could rapidly combine with Cu(II) to produce highly active Cu(II)-Cl n complexes, which could promote the Cu(II) reduction to Cu(I) and subsequent PAA activation. At pH 8.5, the RhB decoloration efficiency in Cl - /Cu(II)/PAA process could reach 85.8 %, and CH 3 C(O)OO • and CH 3 C(O)O • mainly contributed to the decoloration of RhB in this condition. However, at pH 4.0, reactive chlorine species were considered to be responsible for RhB decoloration in this process. The increase of Cu(II), PAA and Cl - dosage facilitated the RhB decoloration in Cl - /Cu(II)/PAA process, while the excessive Cl - inhibited RhB decoloration. HCO 3 - showed an apparent improvement effect on RhB decoloration, while fulvic acid (FA) obviously suppressed RhB decoloration. This work provides a deep insight on the facilitation effect of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process and a strategy to broaden PAA catalysis via Cu(II).

Herein, we explore the development of three copper(II) Schiff base complexes (Cu-SBC, C1 - C3 ) aimed at inhibiting urease (UA), achieved through the thoughtful design of ligands. By integrating a fluorinated Schiff base ligand (SBL) with auxiliary ligands—namely, 2-methylimidazole, 2-ethylimidazole, and 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine—this research systematically examines the impact of steric factors on the inhibition of the UA enzyme. The synthesized complexes underwent comprehensive characterization, including crystallographic analysis. The three synthesized Cu(II) complexes exhibit two distinct coordination geometries dictated by their auxiliary ligands. C1 and C2 display four-coordinate distorted square planar geometries, while C3 adopts a five-coordinate distorted square pyramidal configuration. The biological evaluation revealed that C1 demonstrated a markedly enhanced UA inhibitory activity compared to the standard reference acetohydroxamic acid (IC 50 : 6.12 ± 0.44 vs. 27.73 ± 2.93 μM). Computational methodologies were employed to complement the experimental investigations, elucidating the molecular underpinnings of the observed activity disparities among the complexes. Consequently, the structure-activity relationship analysis indicates that steric hindrance is crucial in modulating the UA inhibitory activity, providing important perspectives for the development of new UA inhibitors and their potential uses in biomedicine.

A series of novel polyethyleneimine/graphene oxide (PEI@GO) membranes were prepared and their adsorptions for heavy metal ions in mixed solutions were examined. It was found that they had good sorption performances for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in water. Their adsorptions for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) obeyed the first-order kinetic modeling, dominating a physical style. Meanwhile, the fitting of intra-particle diffusion showed that Pb(II) and Cu(II) did not conform to the intra-particle diffusion stage, whereas Zn(II) did. Moreover, it was confirmed that the sorption of PEI@GO membranes for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) followed the Langmuir isotherm modeling, and the maximal values could reach 79.6 mg/g for Pb(II), 35.01 mg/g for Cu(II), and 32.27 mg/g for Zn(II), respectively. The calculation of thermodynamic parameters indicated that these adsorptions were spontaneous and endothermic processes. Further, the investigation of PEI@GO membranes for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in ternary mixed systems evidenced that Zn(II) can be preferentially removed via step-by-step mode. In addition, the exploration of sorption mechanism using XPS and FTIR analyses showed that ligand interactions were involved in the adsorptive removal of Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). This study discloses that PEI@GO membranes are promising adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Water contamination by heavy metal pollutants is a global concern due to detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Regenerable, high-performance heavy metal sorbents are urgently demanded for improved water purification . Herein, we present an elegant strategy of interweaving metal–organic framework (MOF-808-ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) to construct freeways in hybrid aerogels for rapid and efficient transport and capture of heavy metal ions. In this strategy, a postsynthetic ligand exchange approach is applied to introduce ordered and high-density accessible binding sites for metal ions. The prepared aerogels show excellent shapeability, ultralow density less than 0.005 g cm −3 , and high hierarchical porosity of 99.82%. Furthermore, benefiting from the abundant chelating groups and accessible surface areas, these aerogels exhibit outstanding uptake capacity of 300 mg g −1 and rapid adsorption kinetics of 0.031 mg g −1 h −1 for Cu(II) ions, significantly better than conventional TCNF aerogels. The aerogels could be easily regenerated at least five cycles without greatly performance loss. These aerogels could effectively remove diverse heavy metal ions from complicated contaminated water. Thus, this work provides a novel method to synthesize environmental-friendly, regenerable, and high-performance adsorption materials for water remediation.
