The first example of a magnetic loading functional porous liquid (PL) by employing hollow silicon dioxide (HS) loaded with Fe 3 O 4 as the porous guest, (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (KH560) and polyetheramine M2070 as hindered sterically solvents was demonstrated in this paper. This nanoadsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL) was prepared for the decontamination of aqueous solutions from Cu(II) and Pb(II) heavy metals. The hindered sterically solvents ( i.e. , the flexible oligomer chains) endow the Fe 3 O 4 @HS porous guest with a superior flowing behavior at ambient temperature. Various approaches were applied to confirm the morphology, structure and properties of the resultant Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL. More significantly, the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution by Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL was studied in detail. As expected, combined with the cavity structure from porous guest and amine groups from flexible organic flow layer, Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 322.58 and 357.14 mg·g −1 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively, at 298 K, pH 8 and initial concentration of 20 mg·L -1 . The obtained HS and Fe 3 O 4 in Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL magnetic nanoadsorbent presented average particles size ascertained to be ca. 200 nm and 30 nm, respectively. Moreover, the Freundlich model and pseudo-first-order model has described the adsorption process and adsorption kinetics . The parameters in thermodynamic experiment signified the spontaneity and endothermic properties of the adsorption. Moreover, magnetic loading endowed the Fe 3 O 4 @HS-PL with a superior regeneration performance. A variety of mechanisms containing coordination interaction, porous guest absorption, electrostatic interaction , steric effect and entropy are simultaneously realized in this novel adsorption system. Therefore, the introduction of PLs adsorbents into heavy metal adsorption systems through the construction of PLs materials by magnetic loading and surface amination is of great significance in the field of heavy metal adsorption, eventually starting a new time of pushing forward the development of novel adsorbents for decontamination of aqueous solutions from heavy metal ions.

The illegal adulteration of melamine in dairy products for false protein content increase is a strong hazard to human health. Herein, a simple and sensitive colorimetric method was developed for the quantification of melamine in dairy products based on a Cu2+-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) system. In this strategy, Cu2+ exhibits peroxidase-like activity and can catalyze the oxidation of TMB to oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of H2O2 with a blue colour change of the solution. However, the presence of melamine quickly interacts with H2O2 leading to the consumption of H2O2 and thus strongly hinders the oxidation of TMB. Under the optimal conditions, the absorbance change of oxTMB has a linear response to the concentration of melamine from 1 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.5 μM for melamine. The proposed method has many merits including more simplicity, good selectivity, and more cost-effectiveness without using any nanomaterials. The method was further successfully applied to detect melamine in dairy products including milk and infant formula powder.

This study describes the preparation of an aerogel adsorbent based on nanofibrillated cellulose(NFC) and polyethyleneimine(PEI) via electrostatic combination without chemical crosslinking. Purely physical crosslinking between NFC and PEI was confirmed by attenuated total refraction-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The NFC/PEI hybrid aerogels exhibited good structural stability and shape recovery in water. Absorption experiment shows that the hybrid aerogels are excellent adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions owing to the highly porous structure and the existence of plenty of amine groups. Thermodynamic and kinetic study showed pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir model ( R 2 > 0.999) as the best fit. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) according to Langmuir model was 175.44 mg/g and 357.44 mg/g, respectively. Besides, the Cu(II) or Pb(II) loaded NFC/PEI aerogel could be easily regenerated by EDTA and retain the adsorption capacity after repeatedly using. This environmentally friendly hybrid aerogels with high-performance are promising candidates for sewage disposal and metal pollution treatment.

Simultaneous removal of chromium(VI) oxyanions and heavy metal cations from contaminated water body is of great significance. In this work, a novel and bifunctional sorbent, imidazolium functionalized polysulfone/DTPA-chitosan composite bead (IMPSF/DACS) was successfully constructed by phase inversion method and applied for co-removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) on IMPSF/DACS in single system at pH 5 were 56.72 and 43.05 mg g −1 , respectively. In binary system, the removal of Cr(VI) could be further enhanced by the presence of Cu(II) due to the electrostatic shielding effect, while Cu(II) sorption was not significantly affected by the coexistence of Cr(VI). Moreover, IMPSF/DACS could simultaneously reduce low concentrations of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) in simulated contaminated lake water below the limit, while also showing good reusability in co-removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II). The order of inhibitory effect of competing anions on Cr(VI) removal was as follows: H 2 PO 4 − < Cl − < NO 3 − < SO 4 2− , while the competing hardness cations had a little effects on the adsorption of Cu(II), implying that the Cr(VI) removal was mainly depended on the electrostatic attraction between Cr(VI) and imidazolium ions modified on IMPSF/DACS, and Cu(II) uptake was associated with chelation of DACS encapsulated in IMPSF/DACS beads. These assumptions were confirmed by XPS, FTIR and EDS-mapping techniques.

Water pollution is a worldwide problem that requires urgent attention and prevention and exceeding use of heavy-metal ions is one of the most harmful factors, which poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. In this work, a magnetic oxidized micro/mesoporous carbon (MOMMC) was prepared for the easy separation of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from water. The dual-template method was used to prepare micro/mesoporous carbon using sucrose as the carbon source, silica nanoparticles formed by tetraethyl orthosilicate as the microporous templates, and triblock copolymer F127 as the mesoporous template. MOMMC was obtained by oxidation using potassium persulfate and then magnetized through in situ synthesis of Fe3O4nanoparticles. FTIR, TG-DSC, XRD, TEM, SEM, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, zeta potential, and VSM were used to confirm the synthetic process, structure, and basic properties of MOMMC. The high-saturation magnetization (59.6 emu·g−1) of MOMMC indicated its easy and fast separation from water by an external magnetic field. Kinetics studies showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on MOMMC fit the pseudo-second-order model well. Isotherm studies showed that the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) was better described by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) was better described by both Langmuir and Redlich–Peterson models. MOMMC obtained efficient adsorption for Cu(II) and Pb(II) with the large adsorption capacity of 877.19 and 943.40 mg·g−1according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation, and a better selectivity for Pb(II) was observed in competitive adsorption. MOMMC still possessed a large adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) after three adsorption–desorption cycles. These findings show that MOMMC represents an excellent adsorption material for the efficient removal of heavy-metal ions. Keywords:magnetic mesoporous carbon;adsorption;copper;lead;adsorption kinetics;adsorption isotherms;selectivity

A novel adsorbent (ZIF-8 cattail cellulose aerogel, ZCCA) with excellent adsorption performance was prepared using cellulose as a dispersant of ZIF-8 and applied to Cu(II) removal from wastewater. ZCCA showed an irregular network structure, which was uniformly filled with ZIF-8 particles. Its adsorption mechanism was the electrostatic attraction and chemical coordination of Cu(II). This adsorption process followed the Pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 270.2 mg⋅g −1 at 303 K. In addition, the removal efficiency remained 83 % after 5 adsorption–desorption cycles. ZCCA showed outstanding adsorption performance and high potential in practical application.

Diclofenac (DCF) is one kind of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and it is imperative to develop a green and efficient method to remove it. The removal of DCF with zinc (Zn) in the presence of Cu(II) and Co(II) were investigated on the influence factors, products, and mechanism. The results showed that with the increasing of Cu(II) and Co(II) concentrations, the reactions were accelerated. The removal rate was higher with lower pH value. In all the systems, the DCF removal rate hardly changed when the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was 0–8 mg·L −1 and increased at 20 mg·L −1 . Products analysis showed that the products were hydroxylated DCF (DCF 0 ) and an unknown product (DCF u ) in Zn system, monochlorinated DCF (DCF 1 ) in Zn/Cu(II) system, DCF 1 and dechlorinated DCF (DCF 2 ) in Zn/Co(II) system. The order of toxicity from highest to lowest was DCF, DCF 0 , DCF 1 , DCF 2 . The corrosion degree of zinc powder surface increased in the presence of Cu(II) and Co(II). After 48 h, ZnO formed in Zn system. In Zn/Cu(II) system, CuO and Cu 2 O formed in addition to ZnO. In the Zn/Co(II) system, Co 3 O 4 , ZnO and Zn(OH) 2 formed. After adding Cu(II) and Co(II), the corrosion currents increased. In Zn/Cu(II) system, DCF was dechlorinated to DCF 1 by catalytic hydrogenation. In Zn/Co(II) system, DCF was mainly dechlorinated to DCF 1 and DCF 2 by catalytic hydrogenation. This technique provides an alternative method for DCF removal and expands the application field of Zn reduction technology.

This work presented a new strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by the addition of nano-zero-valent tungsten (nZVT) via accelerating the redox cycles of Cu(II)/Cu(I), which induce the consecutive generation of highly reactive oxygen species ultimately. The oxidation capacity of the nZVT/Cu(II)/PMS process and the detailed mechanisms of PMS activation were investigated with tetracycline (TC) as the targeted pollutant. Our results indicated that about 70% TC removal was obtained in the nZVT/Cu(II)/PMS system in 15 min with an initial pH of 4.6. In addition, hydroxyl radicals ( OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ), and superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) were identified as the reactive oxygen species (ROSs) attributed to rapid TC decomposition according to the quenching studies and EPR technology. The effective component that was responsible for PMS activation and ROSs generation was ascertained to be the resulting Cu(I), which derived from the direct reduction pathway driven by epigenetic low valence tungsten species and the indirect reduction pathway driven by active hydrogen atoms. Further, the presence of Cu(II) significantly accelerated the corrosion of the nZVT powders, leading to the accumulation of low valence tungsten species and the decrease in the mean diameter of the ZVT nanoparticles. There was no obvious change of the composition and structure between the original and residual nZVT powders, as evidenced by XPS and XRD analysis. The degradation process of TC included the cleavage of specific functional groups, the ring-opening reactions and the hydroxylation process. This study provided theoretical significance in applying zero-valent metals to activate PMS through a cupric/cuprous redox cycling mechanism.

This study describes the preparation of a novel adsorbent based on cellulose nanofibrils by first TEMPO mediated oxidation and then PEI grafting (TOCN-PEI) for heavy metal removal. FTIR results demonstrated the successful introduction of the adsorption functional groups (carboxyl and amino groups), and the elemental analysis and acid base titration were used to quantify the contents of these introduced groups. The kinetics curve suited the pseudo-second-order model better and the equilibrium data well fitted the Langmuir model, with the maximum Cu(II) uptake of 52.32 mg g −1 . Kinetic study showed that the PEI grafting increased the initial adsorption rate of the TOCN-PEI compared with the adsorbents without PEI. Thermodynamic study was carried out through isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurement and the binding reaction was found to be exothermic and driven by enthalpy change. The adsorption process by TOCN-PEI was pH dependent, and decreasing pH would lead to desorption of Cu(II) ions, thus make the reuse of the absorbent more convenient through adsorption-desorption cycles.

Chitosan was prepared by N -deacetylation of squid pens β-chitin, and N -carboxyethylated chitosan ( N -CECS) with different degrees of substitution (DS) were synthesized. DS values of N -CECS derivatives calculated by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were 0.60, 1.02 and 1.46, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Cu(II) by N -CECS correlated well with the DS and pH ranging from 3.2 to 5.8. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity ( q m ) of all three N -CECS at pH 5.4 was 207.5 mg g −1 , which was 1.4-fold higher than that of chitosan. The adsorption equilibrium process was better described by the Langmuir than Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption of Cu(II) ion onto N -CECS followed a pseudo-second order mechanism with chemisorption as the rate-limiting step. In a ternary adsorption system, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II) by N -CECS also presented high values, and q m for Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were 150.2, 28.8, and 187.9 mg g −1 , respectively.

Magnetic relaxation switching (MRS) biosensors have been recognized as useful analytical tools for a range of targets; however, traditional MRS biosensors are limited by the “prozone effect”, resulting in a narrow linear range and low sensitivity. Herein, we proposed a paramagnetic Cu 2+ -induced magnetic resonance tuning (MRET) strategy, based on which Cu 2+ ions and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were adopted to construct a Cu–MNP-mediated MRS (Cu–M-MRS) immunosensor with Cu 2+ ions acting as a quencher and MNPs as an enhancer. An Fe 3 O 4 @polydopamine-secondary antibody conjugate was prepared and used to correlate the amount of Cu 2+ ions to the target concentration through an immunoassay. Based on the immunoreaction, the Cu–M-MRS immunosensor enabled the sensitive detection of chlorpyrifos (0.05 ng/mL, a 77-fold enhancement in sensitivity compared with the traditional MRS immunosensor) and Salmonella (50 CFU/mL). The proposed MRET strategy effectively improved the sensitivity and accuracy of the MRS immunosensor, offering a promising and versatile platform for food safety detection.

Dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid, is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. However, its misuse as a performance-enhancing drug in sports has raised concerns among regulatory authorities. To address this issue, an electrochemical sensor based on Fe 3 O 4 /polyaniline (PANI)-Cu(II) microspheres and hematite nanoparticles was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of dexamethasone. The sensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of dexamethasone due to the synergistic effect of the high conductivity and large surface area of the Fe 3 O 4 /PANI composite microspheres, the electrocatalytic properties of the loaded copper(II) ions, and the enhanced electron transfer of the hematite nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions, the sensor showed a wide linear range of 0.05–50 μM, with a detection limit of 0.015 μM. The sensor also demonstrated good selectivity, reproducibility (RSD = 3.2 %, n = 5), and long-term stability (92 % retention after 4 weeks). Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied for the determination of dexamethasone in spiked human serum and urine samples, with recoveries ranging from 97.5 % to 103.5 % and RSDs less than 3.5 %.
