A novel composite is constructed by loading ZIF-8 on Cu 2 O by in situ growth. By visible light driven semiconductor and π-π* conjugation effect of the metal–organic framework, the migration ability of photogenerated carriers is improved, and electrons are accumulated to participate in hydrogen ion reduction. The superior hydrogen evolution performance (981.8 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and stability test indicate that the coupling of ZIF-8 and semiconductor Cu 2 O successfully improves the catalytic capacity of the material. Cu 2 O provides a place to stimulate activity for ZIF-8 with high specific surface area. The electron transfer mechanism in composites is studied by electrochemical and spectroscopy methods. This work also provides a new opportunity for the in-situ growth of metal–organic frame materials onto single-metal oxides.

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 enables a flexible and efficient way of converting CO 2 into diverse products. Cu 2 O is regarded as a crucial species for electrocatalytically transforming CO 2 to methanol while facing challenges such as the deactivation of the catalyst and low selectivity of desired products. Therefore, the modification of Cu 2 O and the improvement of its catalytic activity needs to be addressed. Herein, we reported a novel synthesis of Cu 2 O nanocubes (Cu 2 O-cube) using the wet chemical method and demonstrated a Faradaic efficiency of 29.1 % for methanol. We found Cu 2 O (100) facet was responsible and beneficial to improve methanol production . The performance degradation at different potentials due to the deactivation of Cu 2 O-cube were revealed from the changes of surface morphologies by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrocatalytic activity of Cu 2 O-cube was further enhanced by embedding Cu 2 O-cube into ZnO nanowires (ZnO@Cu 2 O-cube) through drop-drying, leading to a Faradaic efficiency of 38.9 % towards methanol at − 0.45 V vs. RHE. For parallel comparison, an alternative binding form of ZnO and Cu 2 O was investigated through stacking Cu 2 O film onto ZnO nanowires (ZnO@Cu 2 O-film) through electrodeposition . The results elucidated that the existence of ZnO tended to suppress the production of ethanol and the binding site of ZnO-Cu 2 O could improve the selectivity of methanol.

As a narrow band-gap semiconductor, cuprous oxide (Cu2O) has a relatively high conduction band that can exhibit high driving force for the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen under visible light. Besides, its adjustable morphologies and abundant source also make it possible to be employed as a theoretically optimal photocatalyst. However, the low charge migration and poor stability commonly limit its practical application, and various strategies have been explored in previous studies. In this study, we have novelly utilized Au nanorod (NR) and nanobipyramid (NBP) nanocrystallites as well as rGO nanosheets to boost the photocatalytic activity of Cu2O over hydrogen generation. The ternary rGO wrapped Au@Cu2O with a yolk–shelled structure (y-Au@Cu2O/rGO) was synthesized by a handy and controllable method. When excited by solar light (λ > 400 nm), it was found that the H2 yields of Cu2O/rGO, y-Au nanoparticle@Cu2O/rGO, y-Au NR@Cu2O/rGO, and y-Au NBP@Cu2O/rGO were increased in the order of 248, 702, 1582 and 1894 μmol g−1 in 4 h. The outstanding photocatalytic performances of y-Au NR@Cu2O/rGO and y-Au NBP@Cu2O/rGO could be attributed to the combination function of quick electron transfer of rGO and abundant near-infrared-light-driven hot carriers on Au NRs and NBPs that could inject into Cu2O and then a quick transfer to rGO to participate in H2 reduction. Besides the above results, it was also found that Cu2O maintained good stability after several cycling photocatalysis tests, which could be ascribed to the migration of holes from Cu2O to Au that prevented the photooxidation of Cu2O. This study may give a guide to fabricating controllable and effective photocatalysts based on plasmonic metals, semiconductors, or two-dimensional nanosheets, which possess full-solar-light-driven photocatalytic activities in the future.

In this study, cubic Cu 2 O (c-Cu 2 O) and octahedral Cu 2 O (o-Cu 2 O) were prepared through a simple method and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of Orange Ⅰ (OⅠ). o-Cu 2 O exhibited excellent activity for PMS activation with 85.68 % of OⅠ being removed within 30 min, and its catalytic activity remained high even if it was used repeated six times. The effects of PMS concentration, initial pH, anions (Cl – , HCO 3 – and NO 3 – ) and natural organic matter (NOM) on OⅠ degradation in the o-Cu 2 O/PMS system were investigated. The mechanism study implied that OⅠ was oxidized via radical (SO 4 •– , •OH and O 2 •– ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer) pathways in the o-Cu 2 O/PMS system. This work provides an interesting insight into PMS activation by Cu-based catalysts for wastewater treatment .

Photocatalytic process using core–shell nano-catalyst is an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective process for removal or minimize hazard of pollutants in waste water. Herein, a recyclable and robust Cu 2 O/Fe 3 O 4 @C/Cu core–shell nanocomposite with photocatalyst activities is designed based on the synergistic photocatalytic activities of Cu 2 O and Cu and the magnetic property and stability of Fe 3 O 4 @C. The Cu 2 O/Fe 3 O 4 @C/Cu is shown to act as nano-catalyst to almost completely convert 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) within 3 min by sufficient electrons in the electron-rich region formed under ultraviolet light irradiation. The Cu 2 O/Fe 3 O 4 @C/Cu nanocomposite shows a good stability, reusability and magnetic separation ability after five recycles. In addition, a photocatalytic mechanism of 4-NP reduction over this nanocomposite is proposed, and the roles of each nanocomponent of this nanostructure played in the synergistic enhancing photocatalytic performance via cascade reaction is demonstrated. This work suggests that Cu 2 O/Fe 3 O 4 @C/Cu nanocomposite with high activity, good stability and magnetically recyclability could be applied for the elimination of pollutants in wastewater.

In this work, fabrication of Cu 2 O@Cu 1.75 S core-shell octahedrons was achieved through a facile water bath stirring process. Compared with pure Cu 2 O, the composite showed enhanced sensing performance for NO 2 . The response value of Cu 2 O@Cu 1.75 S to 5 ppm NO 2 at 40 °C is seven times that of Cu 2 O to 5 ppm NO 2 at 75 °C. Moreover, Cu 2 O@Cu 1.75 S has the ability to detect 100 ppb NO 2 and has good NO 2 sensing selectivity and long-term stability. This study shows that Cu 2 O@Cu 1.75 S hybrid is a type of outstanding NO 2 gas sensing material on account of its low working temperature and high sensing sensitivity.

In this study, based on the specific binding of nucleic acid aptamers (Apts) to 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77), an ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor was constructed for the detection of PCB77. The Apts were captured by hairpin (HP) deoxyribonucleic acid capture probes through complementary base pairing. The large surface area of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) combined with Ag-Cu 2 O significantly improved the efficiency of electron transfer on the electrode surface and provided a large number of binding sites for HP capture probes. Streptavidin (SA)-modified CeO 2 /AuPt was used as signal-generating material to amplify electrical signals cooperatively with Ag-Cu 2 O/rGO, and it was also combined with biotin-modified nucleic acid Apts via the SA-biotin system to form signal labels, which significantly improved the sensitivity of the aptasensor. The morphology and size of the synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The internal structure and composition of the materials were further analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The sensor assembly process was confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to optimize the experimental conditions and evaluate the performance of the sensor. Under optimal conditions, the detection limit of the aptasensor was 0.069 ng/L, and the dynamic range was 0.1–10 3 ng/L, providing a high-quality platform for PCB77 detection. Graphical Abstract

In this study, we synthesized Au-Cu 2 O core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Cu 2 O NPs) with epitaxial Cu 2 O shell, which have highly improved catalytic performances in methyl orange reduction reaction. We have obtained Au@Cu 2 O NPs with different sizes at low temperatures by changing the amount of Cu 2+ precursor. Both Au and Cu 2 O are catalytic materials, especially Cu 2 O, as a p -type semiconductor, whose catalytic ability depends on the crystalline facets. Catalytic reduction of methyl orange (MO) was used as a model system to explore the catalytic properties of Au@Cu 2 O nanocomposite. In comparison to pure Au and Cu 2 O NPs, the catalytic performance of Au@Cu 2 O has a noticeable improvement. The best catalytic rate was ~ 22 times faster than that of AuNRs and ~ 4 times than that of Cu 2 O NPs. By studying the catalytic mechanism, it is supposed that the Schottky barrier at the Au-Cu 2 O interfaces leads to the charge separation, which is beneficial to catalysis. Therefore, the Au@Cu 2 O NPs we designed with controllable shell thickness is an ideal composite material in the catalyst domain.

Glucose detection with small and micro volume sampling has recently received increasing attention in monitoring personal health. Herein, a cauliflower-type cluster of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) was directly deposited on the tip surface of a stainless steel acupuncture needle electrode (ANE) by electrochemical deposition, and then this pre-formed cuprous basis was used to further prepare the neatly arranged CoCu-layered double hydroxide (CoCu-LDH) nanosheets that interconnected to form nano-sized pores in the range from 100 to 500 nm. The microstructure and spectral characteristics of the surface modification materials were comprehensively characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR and TEM. Cu2O-based CoCu-LDH composites with special morphology had been proven to accelerate the rate of electron transport and provide more available active centers, and moreover, the mixed valence of Cu/Co induced an excellent synergism for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. As a result, CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE as a sensitive glucose probe exhibited two wider linear ranges of 0.03–0.40 mM and 0.40–6.00 mM, with sensitivities of 116.13 μA mM−1 and 52.08 μA mM−1, respectively, and the detection limit as low as 0.46 μM (S/N = 3). The response time only took 3 s and it kept working stably in the interference of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and Cl−. In the stability test, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor exhibited a stable monitoring sensitivity after 15 days. Finally, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor had been successfully applied to glucose analysis in human serum, proving that our design was an attractive strategy for developing a portable, minimally invasive, and low-cost non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing platform.

Hierarchical structured p–n heterojunctions comprising cuprous oxide nanowire cores (Cu2O NW) and CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) nanosheet shells on copper foam (CF) substrates were constructed by in situ wet–chemical reactions with subsequent electrodeposition. The synergistic effect of the superior light-harvesting ability of Cu2O and the built-in electric field generated by the Cu2O/CoFe LDH p–n heterojunction is verified to facilitate the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes by promoting the rapid transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Benefiting from the advantages above, the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 exhibits light-enhanced catalysis toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 14.4%) and oxygen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 7.4%) for water splitting. Moreover, the alkaline electrolytic cell based on the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 requires an operating potential of only 1.62 V to drive a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 under illumination. Meanwhile, a current density retention of up to 91.62% can be reserved after a stability test for 24 h. This work provides ideas for the design of transition metal-based catalytic materials for photodriven electrochemical water splitting.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an alternative disinfectant for drinking water . This study aimed to investigate the transformation of iopamidol (IPM) catalyzed by a main copper corrosion product ( c -Cu 2 O) with PMS as a disinfectant. The observed pseudo-first-order constant ( k obs ) for the IPM degradation in the c -Cu 2 O/PMS system (0.033 min −1 ) was 3 times that in the CuO/PMS system (0.011 min −1 ). The quenching tests and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments indicate that O 2 •− and 1 O 2 contributed to IPM degradation in the c -Cu 2 O/ PMS system. The complexation of metastable Cu(II) with a PMS molecule polarized the O O bond and then facilitated the electron transfer from the PMS molecule to other PMS and O 2 molecules, which directly and indirectly promoted the yield of O 2 •− and 1 O 2 . The iodine balance indicated that 26.0% of initial TOI was converted to IO 3 − , and CHI 3 only accounted for 0.6% of the residual TOI. In the c -Cu 2 O/PMS system, IPM conversion was started with amide C−N bond breakage, deiodination reaction and hydrogen abstraction. This study helps to better understand the conversion mechanisms of iodine-containing organic micropollutants when PMS is deployed as a disinfectant in copper pipes.

Abstract Fabricate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with low cost and high performance through simple method is a challenge and worthy of work. Herein, an excellent Cu 2 O SERS substrate with porous octahedron structure was synthesized by brief calcining Cu-MOFs in Ar, air and H 2 /Ar gas environment at 350 °C successively. The as-obtained octahedral Cu 2 O was utilized as SERS substrate to measure dye molecules and organic pollutants, which exhibited splendid sensitivity for the detection of methylene blue and 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) with the ultralow limit of 5 × 10 –9 M and 5 × 10 –10 M, respectively. The maximum relative standard deviation for detection of 4-MPY is as low as 12.3%, which is less than limiting step in quantitative SERS (15.0%). The above excellent results are due to outstanding synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement of oxygen vacancy on the Cu 2 O surface and chemical enhancement of the Cu–S bonds formation. The fabricated Cu 2 O possesses superior sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility for SERS detection of probe molecules with sulfhydryl groups and may be a prospect candidate in the practical application. Graphical Abstract
