Three-Dimensional Copper Foam Supported CuO Nanowire Arrays: An Efficient Non-enzymatic Glucose Sensor

Xiangjian Liu,Wenxiu Yang,Lulu Chen,Jianbo Jia

Metal and metal oxides with various nanostructures have been widely studied in non-enzymatic glucose sensing. In this work, we report an efficient catalyst platform, which is made of three-dimensional copper foam (CF) skeleton and copper oxide nanowire arrays (CuONWA), is used to construct glucose sensor. The three-dimensional CuONWA/CF was synthesized via a facile wet-chemical method and subsequent annealing. The CuONWA is evenly covered by CuO nanoflowers . The morphology and composition of the platform were characterized. The nanowire arrays and nanoflowers both enhanced the electrocatalytic performance of the integrated electrode via greatly increasing the surface area of the CF substrate. The electrocatalytic properties of the non-enzymatic glucose sensor were characterized by a series of electrochemical measurements. The sensor exhibits excellent performance, with a linear range of 0.10   μM–0.50   mM, a sensitivity of 32330   μA   mM −1   cm −2 , a low limit of detection of 20   nM (S/N   =   3), excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. The sensor was also used for glucose sensing in human serum and Wahaha ice black tea, with relative standard deviations (for n   =   6) of 3.15% and 2.43%, respectively.

Dynamic Photocurrent Response of CuO-Nanoarray-Based Photoelectrodes: Heterostructure and Small Electric Field Effects

Yaqi Liu,Kaidong Zhan,Zhili Shi,Wenjing Lv,Pujia Cheng,Xuecheng Ren,Fan Wu

CuO nanoarrays were synthesized by using a hydrothermal method, and TiO2 nanocrystals were deposited on the surface of CuO nanoarrays to form bulk heterostructure photoelectrodes. The current-time curve revealed that TiO2 nanocrystals can enhance the photocurrent of CuO nanoarrays, resulting from the higher charge separation efficiency and transfer rate. In addition, the effects of small biases (–0.1 and 0.1 V) on the photocurrent and photogenerated charge dynamics in the aforementioned photoelectrodes were evaluated. A small bias was found to not influence the macroscopic dynamical process during charging and discharging of the CuO photoelectrode, but it was more correlated with the microscopic dynamics. Additionally, the built-in electric field in the CuO nanoarray/TiO2 heterojunction could be affected by a small external bias, thereby influencing the charge separation and charge diffusion concentration, which, subsequently, influenced the charge diffusion length, L. In contrast, L in the pristine CuO nanoarray was not improved under a small reverse bias, because the small reverse bias could not efficiently improve the diffusion concentration owing to the lack of a built-in electric field to dissociate electron-hole pairs. These kinetic mechanisms are helpful in understanding the photoelectric conversion process in heterogeneous photoelectrodes.

Low air pressure self-sustaining combustion performances of 3D direct writing Al/CuO film

Yuxuan Zhou,Yueting Wang,Zehua Zhang,Fuwei Li,Jian Cheng,Yinghua Ye,Jianbing Xu,Ruiqi Shen

The application and optimization of nano-composite energetic materials in the extreme and particular environment have become a subject of wide concern. Additionally, the design and selection of metastable intermixed composites (MICs) films in low pressure environment is the key problem to explore its future application. Here, 90 wt% high loading Al/CuO nanothermite films were prepared by a simple 3D direct writing approach. Four films with different thicknesses (66, 128, 152, 182 μm) were designed and their combustion properties were tested respectively. The low pressure combustion results show that the self-sustained burning rate of the film (thicker than 66 μm) can be adjusted and controlled in various air pressure environments (101–60 kPa). The self-sustained burning rate of film is affected by both thickness (66–182 μm) and air pressure (101–60 kPa). The lower the air pressure, the lower the burning rate. The greater the thickness, the higher the burning rate. The 66 μm film self-sustainedly burns at atmospheric pressure and extinguishes when the pressure was significantly reduced. The self-sustained combustion rates of the 128 and 152 μm film decreases with decreasing pressure until the pressure drops to 75 and 60 kPa respectively. The 182 μm film keeps self-sustained combustion in a manner of deflagration which is almost unaffected by air pressure, even when the pressure drops to 10 kPa. Simultaneously, it is found that the ignition temperature of the film is almost not affected by pressure. In addition, it is verified that the film has performances of excellent hydrophobic and combustion through air–water interface. These can cope with complex environmental humidity.

Improved Photoelectrochemical Glucose Oxidation on Graphene Supported CdS Nanoparticles via Decoration of CuO Nanoparticles

Guoyan Zhao,Sujuan Li

In this work, visible light driven photoelectrochemical glucose sensor was developed by electrochemically deposited CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on graphene (GP)-CdS nanocomposites modified electrode to achieve both the electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. Scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the morphology and electrochemical properties of the resultant CuO NPs/GP-CdS nanocomposites. The CV results demonstrated that modification of CuO NPs largely enhanced the photoelectrocatalytic activity of GP-CdS composites toward glucose oxidation in alkaline solution. The glucose detection sensitivity under visible light irradiation is dramatically improved compared to dark condition. Good performance was obtained for the CuO NPs/GP-CdS nanocomposites based glucose sensor. The feasibility of the present method was confirmed by good recovery results for glucose detection in human serum samples.

A non-radical activation of peroxydisulfate by CuO to selectively oxidize aminobenzenes to nitrobenzenes

Yaning Zhang,Meixuan Wu,Yuyan Yi,Pengfei Sun,Xiaoping Dong

Activation of persulfate by transition metal oxides (TMOs) has been widely studied to solve environmental pollution . Notwithstanding the strong oxidability and the high purification efficiency, the radical oxidation route of activated persulfate suffers the low utilization rate of oxidant and the non-selective oxidation to produce hazardous secondary pollutants, as well as the effect of pH value in reaction system. In this study, we used CuO catalyst to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) to selectively oxidize aromatic amino compounds (AACs) to aromatic nitro compounds (ANCs) through a non-radical pathway, not only effectively eliminating the harmful pollutants in wastewater, but also achieving high value-added products. By using p-chloroaniline (p-CAN) as a model pollutant, we studied the effect of catalyst morphology, concentrations of p-CAN and PDS, the pH value, and the presence of anion on the p-CAN conversion and the p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) yield. Furthermore, the catalytic durability and the universality for other aniline derivatives were investigated. The results indicate that the CuO-activated PDS under the optimized conditions is an efficient strategy to selectively convert AACs to ANCs with high catalytic stability and good universality. Through characterizing the used catalyst with different technology and radical measurements, it was confirmed that the non-radical mechanism was the main oxidation route of p-CAN. Additionally, the intermediate products were detected and the possible reaction pathways were proposed.

Interactions between CuO NPs and PS: The release of copper ions and oxidative damage

Yan Cao,Senlin Tian,Yingxue Geng,Linfeng Zhang,Qun Zhao,Jie Chen,Yingjie Li,Xuewei Hu,Jianhong Huang,Ping Ning

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) can adversely affect lung health possibly by inducing oxidative damage through the release of copper ions. However, the migration and transformation processes of CuO NPs in lung lining fluid is still unclear, and there are still conflicting reports of redox reactions involving copper ions. To address this, we examined the release of copper ions from CuO NPs in simulated lung fluid supplemented with pulmonary surfactant (PS), and further analyzed the mechanisms of PS-CuO NPs interactions and the health hazards. The results showed that the phospholipid of PS was adsorbed on the particle surface, which not only induced aggregation of the particles but also provided a reaction environment for the interaction of PS with CuO NPs. PS was able to promote the release of ions from CuO NPs, of which the protein was a key component. Lipid peroxidation, protein destabilization , and disruption of the interfacial chemistry also occurred in the PS-CuO NPs interactions, during which copper ions were present only as divalent cations. Meanwhile, the contribution of the particle surface cannot be neglected in the oxidative damage to the lung caused by CuO NPs. Through reacting with biomolecules, CuO NPs accomplished ion release and induced oxidative damage associated with PS. This research was the first to reveal the mechanism of CuO NPs releasing copper ions and inducing lipid oxidative damage in the presence of PS, which provides a new idea of transition metal-induced health risk in human body.

Electrochemical Nonenzymatic Glucose Detection Based on the Nanostructures of NiCo2O4 Nanosheets Wrapped CuO Nanowires

Zhenting Zhao,Zibang Huang,Dafeng Long,Kai Li,Zhaohui Guo,Fanglong Zhu,Weiping Gong,Jie Hu

A kind of NiCo2O4-based hierarchically-nanostructured composites has been synthesized for electrooxidation of glucose. The Cu(OH)2 nanowires were initially growth in situ on the surface of Cu foam (CF) and wrapped with Ni-Co precursor (Ni-Co Pre) to prepare nanocomposites (Ni-Co Pre@Cu(OH)2 NWs/CF). Then, the obtained composites were annealed in air to form the NiCo2O4 nanosheets wrapped CuO nanowires nanostructures which were supported on the Cu foam (NiCo2O4@CuO NWs/CF). Because of the synergism of Ni, Co and Cu, as well as the enhanced surface area by hierarchical nanostructure, the as-prepared NiCo2O4@CuO NWs/CF sensor exhibits outstanding electrooxidation activity for glucose detection, including high sensitivity (7.98 μA/μM cm−2), wide linear range (1.0 × 10−3−2.0 mM), low detection limit (0.68 μM) and fast response/recovery times (1.3/2.0 s). Meanwhile, the as-fabricated sensor also possesses good reproducibility, flexibility, selectivity and long-term stability, which is a promising platform for glucose electrooxidation and determination in serum sample.

A room-temperature NO2 sensor based on Ti3C2TX MXene modified with sphere-like CuO

Fuqiang Guo,Cheng Feng,Zheng Zhang,Lili Zhang,Chang Xu,Congting Zhang,Shuang Lin,Huanxing Wu,Baohua Zhang,Aersi Tabusi,Yineng Huang

In this paper, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO nanocomposites were successfully prepared by an environment-friendly and simple hydrothermal method . The synthetics are evaluated using a series of characterization techniques, such as XRD , SEM, TEM , XPS , FTIR, UV–vis, and BET techniques. The results show that Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO nanocomposites are mesoporous and have a higher specific surface area than Ti 3 C 2 T x , confirming the presence of more gas adsorption/diffusion regions. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 T x with the introduction of CuO has rich oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen. In particular, the response of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO sensor (56.99%) is 5 times higher than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x (11.17%) sensor to 50 ppm NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Especially, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO sensor exhibits ultra-fast response/recovery time (16.6/31.3 s to 20 ppm NO 2 ), great reversibility , outstanding selectivity to NO 2 , and desirable long-term stability (over 40 days). The enhanced gas sensing performance may be attributed to the formation of hybrid heterojunctions between CuO and Ti 3 C 2 T x that provide carrier migration channels to hasten the redox reaction . At the same time, Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuO possesses more oxygen vacancies and adsorbed oxygen than Ti 3 C 2 T x , which will reduce the required energy for gas adsorption to further enhance the gas sensing performance. Hopefully, the above improved gas sensing performance indicators modified with CuO are expected to become the advantage of constructing Ti 3 C 2 T x -based sensor, which will be put into commercial NO 2 detection in the future.

Z-scheme CuO/Fe3O4/GO heterojunction photocatalyst: Enhanced photocatalytic performance for elimination of tetracycline

Liangdi Zhu,Yuxing Zhou,Lingyun Fei,Xunlong Cheng,Xixi Zhu,Lanqing Deng,Xin Ma

CuO/Fe 3 O 4 /GO, as a Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst, was successfully synthesized and used as a photocatalyst for removing tetracycline from aqueous solution. The CuO/Fe 3 O 4 /GO heterogeneous catalyst combines the narrow bandgap semiconductor CuO, oxygen vacancies of Fe 3 O 4 , and oxygen-containing reaction sites of GO. Without the addition of activators (persulfate or H 2 O 2 ), the photocatalytic performance on decomposing tetracycline is very excellent. Compared with GO, Fe 3 O 4 , and CuO, CuO/Fe 3 O 4 /GO exhibits superior photocatalytic performance. Under visible light radiation , CuO/Fe 3 O 4 /GO generates h + and ⋅O 2 − , which are the mainly responsible active groups for TC degradation . The effects of various pH, catalysts, and reuse on the degradation performance are evaluated, and the optimal conditions for CuO/Fe 3 O 4 /GO removal of tetracycline are obtained at pH 7, catalyst dosage 20 mg⋅L −1 , TC at a concentration of 30 mg/L, nearly 97.3% of tetracycline is decomposed. This study has great potential in the treatment of wastewater containing various antibiotics.

Bromate formation during oxidation of bromide-containing water by the CuO catalyzed peroxymonosulfate process

Jingxin Yang,Hongrui Ma,Chuan Wang,Hong Liu

Bromate formation has been found in the SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes, but previous studies primarily focused on the bromate formation in the homogeneous SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes. The kinetics and mechanisms of bromate formation are poorly understood in the heterogeneous SO 4 •− -based oxidation processes, although which have been widely studied in the eliminations of micropollutants. In this work, we found that the presence of CuO, a common heterogeneous catalyst of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), appreciably enhanced the bromate formation from the oxidation of bromide by PMS. The conversion ratio of bromide to bromate achieved over 85% within 10 min in this process. CuO was demonstrated to play a multiple role in the bromate formation: (1) catalyzed PMS to generate SO 4 •− , which then oxidizes bromide to bromate; (2) catalyzed the formed free bromine to disproportionate to bromate; (3) catalyzed the formed free bromine to decomposed back into bromide. In the CuO-PMS-Br system, bromate formation increases with increasing CuO dosages, initial CuO and bromide concentrations, but decreases with increasing bicarbonate concentrations. The presence of NOM (natural organic matter) resulted in a lower formed bromate accompanied with organic bromine formation. Notably, CuO catalyzes PMS to transform more than 70% of initial bromide to bromate even after recycled used for six times. The formation of bromate in the PMS catalysis by CuO system was also confirmed in real water.

Stabilizing Cu+ Species in Cu2O/CuO Catalyst via Carbon Intermediate Confinement for Selective CO2RR

Haojun Shi,Lingli Luo,Congcong Li,Yu Li,Tingting Zhang,Zhongliang Liu,Jialin Cui,Li Gu,Ling Zhang,Yanjie Hu,Huihui Li,Chunzhong Li

Copper oxide nanomaterials have been suggested to be efficient for highly selective multi-carbon (C 2+ ) production in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), due to the introduction of surface Cu + species from oxide catalysts. However, the Cu + species on the catalyst surface are prone to being reduced to Cu 0 under reductive conditions during CO 2 RR. Here, a network-structured catalyst is developed consisting of ultrafine Cu 2 O/CuO nanoparticles that harbor an abundance of pores. This catalyst is synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) method and engineered to confine carbon intermediates, which subsequently cover the local catalyst surface and stabilize Cu + species. As a result, a C 2+ products Faradaic efficiency (FE) of approximately 80.0% at a partial current density of 320.0 mA cm −2 is achieved, and a large C 2+ to C 1 ratio of ≈9.7. In situ XRD and XPS spectra are employed to reveal the indeed presence of Cu + species on the catalyst surface during the CO 2 RR process, which extensively improves the adsorption of * CO intermediates and thus the C─C coupling reaction to form C 2+ products.

Boosting oxidative desulfurization from liquid fuels with CuO-MgO assisted by MgMoO4 co-catalyst

Xingye Zeng,Cunhui Lin,Qinggang Ren,Shufeng Shan,Hanlu Wang

Developing a highly efficient catalyst is one of the important topics in the field of oxidative desulfurization from liquid fuels. In this study, the composite metal oxide catalysts (CuO-MgO) with co-catalyst MgMoO 4 were prepared by co-precipitation method with simple process, high efficiency and good performance and their structures characterized. An efficient extractive catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) system for liquid fuel was successfully developed on the basis of as-prepared CuO-MgO-MgMoO 4 (CuMgMo) as the catalyst, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) as the oxidant, and acetonitrile as the extractant. Taking the n -decane and n -tetradecane containing dibenzothiophene (DBT) as the test model oil sample, the main parameters influencing desulfurization performance were examined in detail, such as the molybdenum content, the dosage of CuMgMo, the reaction temperature, the initial S-concentration, the different extractants, the volume ratio of extractant to oil, the different oxidants, and the molar ratio of NaClO to DBT . Based on optimized desulfurization reaction conditions, the model oil containing different sulfur compounds (benzothiophene, 4-methyldibenzothiophene, and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene) and the real oil (straight-run gasoline, straight-run kerosene, and straight-run diesel) were further tested. Based on the free radical trapping experiments and the calculation of density functional theory, the reaction mechanism was deeply explored. The results showed that the de-electron reaction of DBT was mainly catalyzed by MgMoO 4 and the reaction of HClO obtaining electron was mainly catalyzed by CuO. MgMoO 4 plays an assisting role in improving the catalytic reaction rate. This work will provide a useful reference for the construction of efficient ECODS system using composite metal oxides.
