Chlorogenic acid (CGA) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) are major polyphenolic constituents of coffee and green tea with beneficial health properties. In this study, we evaluated the gut protecting effect of CGA and EGCG, alone or in combination, on D-galactose-induced aging mice. CGA plus EGCG more effectively improved the cognition deficits and protected the gut barrier function, compared with the agents alone. Specifically, CGA plus EGCG prevented the D-galactose mediated reactive oxygen species accumulation by increasing the total antioxidant capacity, reducing the levels of malondialdehyde, and suppressing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase. In addition, supplementation of CGA and EGCG suppressed gut inflammation by reducing the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines TNFα, IFNγ, IL-1β and IL-6. Moreover, CGA and EGCG modulated the gut microbiome altered by D-galactose. For instance, CGA plus EGCG restored the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio of the aging mice to control levels. Furthermore, CGA plus EGCG decreased the abundance of Lactobacillaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Deferribacteraceae, while increased the abundance of Lachnospiraceae, Muribaculaceae, and Rikenellaceae, at the family level. In conclusion, CGA in combination with EGCG ameliorated the gut alterations induced by aging, in part, through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, along with its gut microbiota modulatory capacity.

In this study, a durable superhydrophobic antibacterial coating was developed by a facile spraying method. A mixture of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) and hydrophobic SiO2nanoparticles was sprayed on carbon steel to provide a superhydrophobic substrate. D-cysteine (D-cys) functionalized SiO2/dopamine/silver nanoparticles with multilayer core-shell structure were then sprayed on superhydrophobic substrate to enhance antibacterial performance. The results of morphology observation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated the successful preparation of antibacterial nanoparticles and presented the hierarchical micro/nanostructures of coating surface. The as-prepared coating exhibited superhydrophobicity, with the water contact angle of ~153°. The coating was endowed with good mechanical durability, which maintained the water contact angle of ~150° after 180 cycles in tape-peel tests. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed satisfactory corrosion resistance of this coating during 3 days of immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the coating showed excellent antibacterial performances againstEscherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosa, which benefited from the synergistic actions of low wettability of superhydrophobic surface, bactericidal behavior of Ag nanoparticles, and biofilm inhibition effect of D-cys.Keywords:superhydrophobic coatings;antibacterial;D-cysteine;silver nanoparticles

d -allulose is a rare low-calorie sugar that has many fundamental biological functions. d -allulose 3-epimerase from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (AT-DAEase) catalyzes the conversion of d -fructose to d -allulose. The enzyme has attracted considerable attention because of its mild catalytic properties. However, the bioconversion efficiency and reusability of AT-DAEase limit its industrial application. Magnetic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have uniform pore sizes and large surface areas and can facilitate mass transport and enhance the capacity for enzyme immobilization. Here, we successfully encapsulated cobalt-type AT-DAEase into the cobalt-based magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 using a self-assembly strategy. We confirmed the immobilization of enzyme AT-DAEase and characterized the enzymatic properties of the MOF-immobilized AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 . The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles had higher catalytic activity (65.1 U mg −1 ) and bioconversion ratio (38.1%) than the free AT-DAEase. The optimal conditions for maximum enzyme activity of the AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were 55 °C and pH 8.0, which were significantly higher than those of the free AT-DAEase (50 °C and pH 7.5). The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles displayed significantly improved thermal stability and excellent recycling performance, with 80% retention of enzyme activity at a temperature range of 45–70 °C and > 45% of its initial activity after eight cycles of enzyme use. The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have great potential for large-scale industrial preparation of d -allulose by immobilizing cobalt-type AT-DAEase into magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 .

The feasibility of chemobiocatalytic production of furfuryl alcohol from biomass-derived D -xylose was investigated using a tandem catalysis with deep eutectic solvent betaine:benzenesulfonic acid (DES BE:BA) and recombinant Escherichia coli DCF cell. The DES BE:BA (2.5 wt%) was applied to catalyze D -xylose under 170 °C for 0.5 h, resulting in a furfural yield of 51.1%. Consequently, recombinant Escherichia coli DCF fully transformed D -xylose-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol in DES BE:BA-water under pH 7.5 and 40 °C using HCOONa as cosubstrate. This eco-friendly chemobiocatalytic strategy was successfully applied for transforming D -xylose to furfuryl alcohol in DES BE:BA-water.

A fluorometric method for the determination of histamine has been developed based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect of D-penicillamine capped copper nanoparticles (DPA-CuNPs). The fluorescent DPA-CuNPs were synthesized by a one-pot method using D-penicillamine as both reducing agent and stabilizing ligand. The size, morphology and physical chemical properties of DPA-CuNPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and absorption spectroscopy. The DPA-CuNPs exhibit AIE effect and show intense red fluorescence (650 nm). In the presence of histamine, DPA-CuNPs are dispersed into small homogeneous particles, causing fluorescence quenching. Based on this reaction, a histamine sensor is constructed. The fluorescence of the CuNPs solution has a good linear relationship with histamine concentration in the range 0.05 μM to 5 μM and the determination limit (3σ/slope) is 30 nM. The estimated method was successfully applied to the determination of histamine in fish, pork and red wine.
Schematic representation of copper nanoparticles for histamine analysis. In the presence of histamine, the strong red fluorescence of copper nanoparticles is obvious decreased through interaction of copper nanoparticles and histamine.

: As the key precursor of coenzyme A synthesis in vivo , D-pantothenic acid plays an important role in maintaining biological function, which is widely applied in the food , pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. At present, it was mainly produced by chemical methods, with serious environmental pollution, therefore, it is urgent to develop an economical, practical, and environmentally friendly biological fermentation method based on microbial chassis cells. Herein, based on our previously developed D-pantothenic acid producing strains, we obtained higher yielding D-pantothenic acid producing strains by systematic metabolic engineering . First, according to the results of CRISPRi experiments, lpd were overexpressed, disrupted the non-PTS (non-phosphoenolpyruvate-pyruvate transport system) as well as enhanced the PTS (phosphoenolpyruvate-pyruvate transport system) allowing precursor accumulation. Subsequently, based on the analysis of metabolic intermediates , the pyruvate bypass pathway was blocked as well as the (R)-pantothenic acid pathway was further enhanced, increasing the titer of D-pantothenic acid to 4.60 g/L. Finally, the organic acid and branched-chain amino acid synthesis pathways were blocked, and in order to accelerate the synthesis of acetolactate and the output of D-pantothenic acid, heterologous acetolactate synthase and pantothenate transfer protein were introduced, which significantly increased the yield of D-pantothenic acid, reach to 6.33 g/L. The final strain in a 5 L bioreactor produced 32.32 g/L D-pantothenic acid with a productivity of 2.33 g/L/h and the high-yielding strain provides an effective platform for biological fermentation to produce D-pantothenic acid.

The solubilities of d-tryptophan in neat n-propanol, ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol (EG), n-butanol, acetonitrile, 1-octanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide and of l-tyrosine in ethyl acetate, EG, isopropanol, acetonitrile, n-butanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were determined via a shake-flask method at temperatures from 283.15 to 328.15 K under about 101.2 kPa. At the fixed temperature, the mole fraction solubility of d-tryptophan was the largest in EG and the lowest in 1-octanol. However, for l-tyrosine, the maximum solubility was observed in the ethyl acetate and minimum in n-butanol. X-ray powder diffraction analysis was carried out to analyze the solids equilibrated with the corresponding liquor, indicating that no polymorphic transformation or solvate formation took place in the studied systems. The solubility correlation was performed via the Apelblat equation. The obtained maximum root-mean-square deviation and relative average deviation values were 13.65 × 10–5 and 4.32%, respectively. In addition, the solvent–solvent and solute–solvent interactions were investigated on the basis of the approach of linear solvation energy relationship.

Herein, a simple, novel, and rapid colorimetric sensor for cimetidine (Cim) detection based on D-xylose protected gold nanoparticles (D-x@AuNPs) has been developed for the first time. The D-x@AuNPs were characterized by UV-vis, TEM and FT-IR techniques. Cimetidine causes the aggregation of D-x@AuNPs due to the formation of a strong covalent Au–N bond and electrostatic binding. As the cimetidine concentration increased, the color of the solutions gradually changed from wine-red to blue, and the large absorption band shifted from 533 to 680 nm upon D-x@AuNP aggregation. The effects of different experimental parameters were investigated. A comparative study on the detection of Cim using citrated capped AuNPs and D-x@AuNPs was presented. Under optimum conditions, the UV-vis spectra showed that the absorption ratio (A680/A533) increased linearly with the concentration of cimetidine in the range of 7 × 10−8 to 3 × 10−6 M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9956 and a limit of detection of 1 × 10−8 M without needing any complicated instruments. The selectivity of the D-x@AuNP detection system for cimetidine was excellent when compared with other ions and analytes. Due to their rapid and visible color changes, and their remarkable selectivity, the D-x@AuNPs synthesized in this study were suitable and could be applied to the detection of cimetidine in human urine.

Dehydration of D-xylose to yield furfural was carried out using bimetallic salts of a heteropolyacid as the catalyst at 160–220 °C in the DMSO/H 2 O mixtures. The effect of Sn/Cs molar ratio of the bimetallic salts of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (PW) obtained by ultrasound-assisted coprecipitation on dehydration of D-xylose was investigated. The resultant catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). It was found that the Sn-Cs codoped PW catalysts retained the Keggin crystal structure of PW. Sn 0.625 Cs 0.5 PW was the most active catalyst in the dehydration of D-xylose into furfural. The maximum D-xylose conversion (close to 100 wt %) and furfural yield (63 wt %) were achieved at 200 °C for 3 h in DMSO/H 2 O mixtures. It was found that 16.7 wt % Sn 0.625 Cs 0.5 PW on a chitosan-derived support displayed similar catalytic activity to that of Sn 0.625 Cs 0.5 PW and good stability after recycling six times.

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (NO3RR) provides a desired alternative of the traditional Haber–Bosch route for ammonia production, igniting a research boom in the development of electrocatalysts with high activity. Among them, molecular electrocatalysts hold considerable promise for the NO3RR, suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. However, the complicated synthesis procedure, usage of environmentally unfriendly organic solvents, and poor stability of Cu-based molecular electrocatalysts greatly limit their employment in NO3RR, and the development of desired Cu-based molecular catalysts remains challenging. Herein, a simple nonorganic solvent involving a one-step strategy was proposed to synthesize d−π-conjugated molecular electrocatalysts metal–amidinothiourea (M-ATU). Cu-ATU is composed of Cu coordinated with two S and two N atoms, whereas Ni-ATU is formed by Ni with four N atoms from two ATU ligands. Remarkably, Cu-ATU with a Cu–N2S2 coordination configuration exhibits superior NO3RR activity with a NH3 yield rate of 159.8 mg h–1 mgcat–1 (−1.54 V) and Faradaic efficiency of 91.7% (−1.34 V), outperforming previously reported molecular catalysts. Compared to Ni-ATU, Cu-ATU transfers more electrons to the *NO intermediate, effectively breaking the strong sp2 hybridization system and weakening the energy of N═O bonds. The increase in free energy of *NO reduced the energy barriers of the rate-determining step, facilitating the further hydrogenation process over Cu-ATU. Our work opened up a new horizon for exploring molecular electrocatalysts for nitrate activation and paved a way for the in-depth understanding of catalytic behaviors, aligning more closely with industrial demands.

d-Mandelate dehydrogenase (DMDH) has the potential to convert d-mandelic acid to phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA), which is a key building block in the field of chemical synthesis and is widely used to synthesize pharmaceutical intermediates or food additives. A novel NAD+-dependent d-mandelate dehydrogenase was cloned from Lactobacillus harbinensi (LhDMDH) by genome mining and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21. After being purified to homogeneity, the oxidation activity of LhDMDH toward d-mandelic acid was approximately 1200 U·mg–1, which was close to four times the activity of the probe. Meanwhile, the kcat/Km value of LhDMDH was 28.80 S–1·mM–1, which was distinctly higher than the probe. By coculturing two E. coli strains expressing LhDMDH and LcLDH, we developed a system for the efficient synthesis of PGA, achieving a 60% theoretical yield and 99% purity without adding coenzyme or cosubstrate. Our data supports the implementation of a promising strategy for the chiral resolution of racemic mandelic acid and the biosynthesis of PGA.

Hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, lignin, d-xylose (substitute for hemicellulose), and wood meal (WM) was experimentally conducted between 225 and 265 °C, and the chemical and structural properties of the hydrochars were investigated. The hydrochar yield is between 45 and 60%, and the yield trend of the feedstock is lignin > WM > cellulose > d-xylose. The hydrochars seem stable below 300 °C, and aromatic structure is formed in all of these hydrochars. The C content, C recovery, energy recovery, ratio of C/O, and ratio of C/H in all of these hydrochars are among 63–75%, 80–87%, 78–89%, 2.3–4.1, and 12–15, respectively. The higher heating value (HHV) of the hydrochars is among 24–30 MJ/kg, with an increase of 45–91% compared with the corresponding feedstock. The carbonization mechanism is proposed, and furfural is found to be an important intermediate product during d-xylose hydrochar production, while lignin hydrothermal carbonization products are made of polyaromatic hydrochar and phenolic hydrochar. The formation of microspheres on the surface of cellulose and WM hydrochars is discussed, and transformation of the hemicellulose should be the reaction for WM microsphere production.
