Heavy metal contamination in water poses a serious global environmental challenge. In particular, hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is particularly concerning due to its carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. In this work, core–shell NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67 nanoparticles (NPs) were in situ stepwise grown on sulfonated polypropylene (PP) nonwoven to fabricate a multifunctional composite (NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven) for efficient removal of Cr (VI). As expected, the resulting NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven exhibited dual functionality for efficient Cr (VI) remediation: simultaneous adsorption and visible-light-driven photocatalytic reduction, accompanied by effective sequestration of the resulting Cr (III), due to the presence of NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67 NPs. Under visible light irradiation, the composite achieved exceptional performance, reducing Cr (VI) concentrations from 0.608 mg/L to below 0.004 mg/L and lowering total Cr concentrations from 0.876 mg/L to below 0.004 mg/L, corresponding to a removal efficiency of over 99.6%. The mechanism was elucidated as an integrated adsorption-reduction-fixation process. More importantly, the composite demonstrated outstanding recyclability, retaining 80.0% of its removal efficiency after five regeneration cycles, highlighting its practical potential. Therefore, the as-obtained NH2–UiO-66@UiO-67/PP composite nonwoven can be viewed as a highly efficient material for treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater through an adsorption-photocatalytic reduction pathway.

The large-scale accumulation of red mud, a waste by-product from aluminum production, presents critical environmental challenges and opportunities for resource valorization. In this study, a Cu x O/RM composite was synthesized via wetness impregnation and applied for rapid and selective NO 3 − -N reduction. Complete NO 3 − -N removal was achieved within 9 min under mild conditions (25 °C, initial pH 7.0, 30 mg(N)/L), with NO 2 − -N as the primary intermediate. With addition of NH 2 SO 3 H, NO 2 − -N was further reduced to N 2 gas within 3 min. Notably, the Cu x O/RM system maintained high NO 3 − -N removal efficiency even at lower temperatures (5–15 °C) and across a wide pH range (3−11), demonstrating excellent adaptability to real-world wastewater conditions. Stability and reusability tests showed that the composite retained over 95 % removal efficiency after five reuse cycles. Mechanistic investigations revealed that in-situ generated Cu 0 and H 2 -mediated pathways synergistically enhanced NO 3 − -N reduction performance. This study not only provides an effective and sustainable strategy for NO 3 − -N remediation but also offers a promising route for the large-scale valorization of red mud.

Due to the consumption of traditional fossil fuels, human society faces global energy shortages and increasing environmental pollution problems. To address water pollution caused by the abuse of antibiotics and to promote green hydrogen production. In this paper, a Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS S-scheme heterojunction was prepared to realize the photocatalytic levofloxacin (LEV) degradation coupled with hydrogen production reaction. Under the introduction of [Co(bpy) 3 Cl 2 ] (CoBpy) as a molecular photosensitizer, the hydrogen production activity of Bi 2 WO 6 /CdS increased remarkably to 5395.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , meanwhile, the degradation rate of LEV could reach 87.5 %, which was much higher than that of the pure phase material and exhibited excellent stability over five cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic activity originates from the S-scheme heterojunction mechanism that enables the oxidizing and reducing abilities of the material to be fully exploited, meanwhile the sensitization of CoBpy further optimizes the charge transfer pathway, which realizes the combination of visible-light-driven wastewater treatment and green hydrogen production. Our findings provide an efficient and safe approach to environmental remediation and green energy production for a sustainable energy future.

To overcome the limitations of conventional powder catalysts, such as recovery difficulty and aggregation, a three-dimensional polyimide-modified carbon nanotube/melamine sponge composite (PIC-MS) was fabricated via a freeze-drying process and applied for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). Structural characterizations, including SEM, FT-IR, and XRD, confirmed the successful integration of polyimide-modified carbon nanotubes with the melamine sponge framework. By combining the high catalytic activity of polyimide-modified carbon nanotubes with the robustness and easy recoverability of the sponge structure, PIC-MS effectively addressed catalyst aggregation, deactivation, and separation challenges. The PIC-MS/PMS system achieved over 97 % BPA removal within 20 min and showed broad-spectrum degradation efficiency toward various organic pollutants. Moreover, the catalyst displayed excellent adaptability across a wide pH range (2.7–9.5) and preserved more than 87 % of its activity after six consecutive cycles, confirming strong stability and reusability. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) were the dominant reactive oxygen species, with 1 O 2 playing the primary role. These species promoted sequential hydroxylation and oxidative ring-cleavage reactions, ultimately leading to complete mineralization of BPA into CO 2 and H 2 O. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis further indicated that the transformation products had much lower bioaccumulation factors than BPA, suggesting reduced environmental risk during degradation. This work highlights a sustainable strategy for constructing recyclable metal-free catalysts, offering promising prospects for advanced wastewater treatment.

The escalating levels of indoor bacterial contamination and air pollution considerably threaten public health. In this work, we synthesized a three-dimensional flower-like TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nano-powder with a Z-scheme heterojunction structure, which demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance and efficient free radical generation capability, enabling effective mitigation of bacterial pathogens and indoor volatile organic compounds under low-power light irradiation. The material achieved 100% degradation of formaldehyde within 40 minutes under 420 nm LED irradiation. Antibacterial tests showed a 100% inactivation rate for S. aureus within 60 minutes and complete elimination of E. coli within 40 minutes. Characterizations and DFT calculations had confirmed the establishment of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which significantly decreased the band gap and improves the absorption of visible light. Concurrently, the efficient separation of charge carriers and the transfer of electrons facilitated the production of reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, this research presents a novel and environmentally sustainable approach to developing high-performance photocatalysts for applications in indoor environment improvement.

Our groundbreaking photocatalyst, boasting superior efficiency and realizing activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by near-infrared-light (NIR), effectively degrades pollutants such as chlorophenol, bisphenol A, and various antibiotics in wastewater by prediction of theoretical calculation. This is verified by strategically synthesis of metal sulfide-modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) Z-scheme heterojunctions, which is optimized for photo-Fenton catalysis. CuS/CNNSs degrades 40 ppm 4-CP to undetectable in 20 min with a rate constant of 0.230 min −1 , 10x faster than Carbon-nitrogen nanosheets (CNNSs), showcasing its remarkable efficiency and the degradation efficiency remains above 80 % along with extremely excellent quantum efficiency (3.81 %) under NIR (1000 nm). It has strong catalytic stability and can cope with various complex water bodies with >90 % efficiency retention after 5 cycles. Moreover, we have delved into the intricate details of the degradation efficiency in real water system and various descriptors that affect the activation ability of catalysts by density functional theory (DFT). This strategy provides insight for pollutant degradation mechanisms for advanced photocatalyst R&D for wastewater treatment.

Nowadays, bacterial infection-associated diseases pose significant threats to human public health. Developing alternative strategies for the highly efficient treatment of bacterial infections is in urgent demand. It is well-known that hydroxyl radical (•OH) exhibits strong antibacterial activity and is widely used for chemodynamic therapy (CDT), while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) displays the ability to promote wound healing for gas therapy (GT). In the present work, a multifunctional nanozyme with pH and GSH dual-responsive sequentially releasing •OH and H2S properties was rationally designed for high-efficiency wound infection treatment via bimodal CDT and GT therapy. Herein, dendritic mesoporous organic silica (DMOS) nanoparticles were prepared and used as the carrier for in situ copper peroxide (CP) nanodots growth, obtaining nanozyme of DMOS@CP. In the acidic condition, CP decorated on DMOS was first decomposed by generating •OH via the Fenton-like reaction, which was able to effectively inhibit bacterial growth, as well as eradicate bacterial biofilms, by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, increasing intracellular ROS generation, and damaging bacterial DNA. Subsequently, DMOS can be further dissociated by GSH to release a substantial amount of H2S to promote bacterial wound healing. The mechanism study revealed that H2S was capable of first reversing the inflammatory microenvironment of the wound by reprogramming M2-type macrophage polarization, followed by upregulating expressions of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, vascular endothelial growth factor, and CD31 to promote cell migration and angiogenesis.

Biochar (BC) is widely used in persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), yet the environmental role of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM) remains poorly understood. Here, we revealed that BDOM released from BC pyrolyzed at 300–700 °C regulated the oxidation degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in a ball-milled N-doped BC-ZVI (NBC-ZVIbm)/PS system. Results showed that higher pyrolysis temperatures produced a lower-molecular-weight BDOM with more oxidized species. Although pyridinic and graphitic N in NBC-ZVIbm enhanced PS activation and electron transfer, BDOM significantly suppressed SMX degradation, with stronger inhibition observed at higher pyrolysis temperatures. Quenching experiments combined with Fourier infrared cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) analyses identified aliphatic polyphenols and lignans as the dominant inhibitory components. Key molecular features including O/C and H/C ratios and the abundance of −OH groups and unsaturated bonds were strongly correlated with reduced SMX removal. Further mechanistic analysis revealed that BDOM hindered degradation through multiple pathways: consuming oxidants, scavenging reactive species, chelating iron ions, and altering transformation routes. This work highlights the underappreciated inhibitory role of BDOM and suggests the avoidance of excessive pyrolysis temperatures to improve the practical efficacy of BC-mediated AOPs for environmental remediation.

This study presents the preparation of iron and nitrogen co-doped sludge-based biochar (FeCN-MSBC) and iron oxide-doped biochar (FeO-MSBC) by ball milling municipal sludge with different iron precursors (K3Fe(CN)6and Fe2O3), followed by pyrolysis. These biochars were utilized to activate persulfate (PMS) for the degradation of phenolic pollutants. The results demonstrate that FeCN-MSBC, formed by the introduction of K3Fe(CN)6, contains Fe/N phases, with surface Fe sites exhibiting a lower oxidation state, which significantly enhances PMS activation efficiency. In contrast, FeO-MSBC, due to the aggregation of Fe2O3/Fe3O4, shows relatively lower catalytic activity. The FeCN-MSBC/PMS system degrades pollutants via a synergistic mechanism involving non-radical pathways mediated by1O2and electron transfer processes (ETP) catalyzed by surface Fe. Electrochemical oxidation and quenching experiments confirm that ETP is the dominant pathway. FeCN-MSBC, prepared at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C and an Fe loading of 3 mmol/g TSS, exhibited the best performance, achieving a phenol degradation rate constant (kobs) of 0.127 min−1, 4.5 times higher than that of undoped biochar (MSBC). FeCN-MSBC/PMS maintained high efficiency across a wide pH range and in complex water matrices, exhibiting excellent stability over multiple cycles, demonstrating strong potential for practical applications. This study provides an effective strategy for simultaneous Fe and N doping in sludge-derived biochar and offers mechanistic insights into Fe/N synergistic activation of PMS for practical water treatment.

Sulfamethazine (SMT) is an antibiotic with good antimicrobial effect and is widely used to treat human and livestock diseases. Though the degradation of SMT by the conventional Fenton and electro-Fenton (EF) processes is efficient, it is limited by a narrow pH and iron sludge generation. Herein, we constructed a cost-effective EF system with the synergistic effect of zero-valent iron (Fe0) and sulfite (Fe0-EF/Sulfite), and key parameters such as applied current, catalyst dosing, sulfite dosage, and initial pH were optimized. Under the optimal conditions (Fe0dosing of 50 mg/L, sulfite dosage of 1.5 mM, current of 40 mA, and pH of 3), the removal efficiency of 10 mg/L SMT reached 100% within 30 min, and the degradation rate constant reached 0.194 min−1. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments confirmed the generation of various reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as•OH, SO4−, O2−, and1O2, which significantly improved the pollutant removal efficiency. Sulfite accelerated iron cycling and inhibited the formation of iron sludge, thus broadening the pH range of the reaction from three to eight and overcoming the limitations of the conventional EF process. The Fe0-EF/Sulfite system performs cost-effectively at a wide pH range, providing an efficient and low-carbon solution for environmental pollution remediation with broad application prospects.

Developing high-performance and sustainable carbon catalysts for enhancing the degradation of organic antibiotics remains a great challenge. Herein, a delignified wood-derived carbon embedded with nitrogen (DLWC@N) was designed to enhance peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the degradation of aqueous ciprofloxacin (CIP). The removal of lignin and hemicellulose in poplar wood was found to facilitate the formation of a more porous architecture and tailed the permeability of channels in the carbon. N species and N content were regulated on this hydrophilic cellulose skeleton through a simple pyrolysis strategy. The resulting DLWC@N-700 achieved 97.49% CIP removal within 60 min and exhibited 79.64 % removal efficiency after four consecutive cycles. The unique three-dimensional network structure in the derived carbon promoted the diffusion of the solution and exposed much more active sites. Graphitic N and N-O bonds as main active sites during PMS activation were revealed. The quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance and electrochemical analysis unveiled that the degradation process was dominated by a non-radical pathway of singlet oxygen and electron transfer. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer results demonstrated that the main degradation pathway of CIP included hydroxylation, cleavage of the piperazine ring, and cyclopropane shedding, resulting in the formation of seventeen reaction intermediates. This work proposes an advanced free-metal wood-derived carbon catalyst to enhance PMS activation for antibiotics degradation, facilitating the development of wastewater treatment technology.

Enterobacter hormaechei , A zoonotic pathogen with escalating prevalence in global food sources, severely jeopardizes food safety, necessitating the development of high-performance detection methods. Herein, a novel colorimetric detection strategy integrating phages and nanozymes was proposed for foodborne E. hormaechei . Initially, four homologous phages (EhpYZU05, EhpYZU08, EhpYZU9–1 and EhpYZU10), which were isolated using E. hormaechei YZU05 as the host bacterium, were modified on the surface of NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) to fabricate four phage@NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) nanozymes. These nanozymes exhibit peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chromogenic reaction in presence of H 2 O 2 . With introduction of multiple host or non-host E. hormaechei strains, TMB chromogenic reaction catalyzed by phage@NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) nanozymes can be specifically inhibited. This inhibition occurs due to the specific phage adsorption of phage@NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) nanozymes towards these host or non-host E. hormaechei strains, indirectly blocking their catalytic sites. Leveraging this principle, colorimetric broad-spectrum detection of E. hormaechei was achieved. Additionally, this method demonstrated reliable recoveries (96.7 % ~ 103.3 %) when applied to detect real food matrices, highlighting its high reliability in practical scenarios. This approach not only clarifies the intrinsic mechanism of phage-modified nanozymes for target bacteria detection but also provides a robust and reliable method for early pathogen detection, thereby significantly contributing to food safety enhancement
