Er- and Zr-codoped strontium bismuth niobate ceramics, Sr 0.97 Er 0.03 Bi 2 Nb 2− x Zr x O 9 (SBN x ) with different x (0≤ x ≤0.1), were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. Their structural, up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence , and dielectric properties were investigated. By Rietveld structural refinement, all SBN x samples exhibited a polycrystalline bismuth-layered perovskite structure with space group A2 1 am. With deliberate introduction of Zr 4+ ions in the bismuth-layered perovskite structure, SBN x samples presented simultaneously enhanced UC photoluminescence and dielectric properties. The UC photoluminescence was investigated as a function of Zr 4+ concentration and incident pump power. Under the 980 nm near infrared (NIR) excitation, bright UC green and weak red emissions were observed which corresponded to the transitions from 2 H 11/2 / 4 S 3/2 and 4 F 9/2 to 4 I 15/2 level, respectively. With x increase, the UC luminescence improvement of SBN x can be attributed to the local distortion of crystal field surrounding the Er 3+ activator which induced by different ionic radii of Zr 4+ and Nb 5+ ions. The dependence of UC emission intensity on pumping power showed that two photon energy transfer process was involved in the UC green and red emissions. Furthermore, electrical measurements indicated that the introduction of Zr 4+ distinctly increased the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition temperature ( T C ) of SBN x ceramics from 724 K to 762 K as x ranging from 0.0 to 0.1. It is believed that B site doping in SBN x by large Zr 4+ ion is an effective method to improve UC luminescence and electrical properties of this potentially multifunctional optical-electro material.

Water-soluble hexagonal NaScF 4 :Yb/Er upconversion microcrystals (UCMCs) were synthesized using the hydrothermal method . The upconversion photoluminescence properties of NaScF 4 :xYb/2%Er microcrystals (x = 4–20%) were characterized under a 980-nm-wavelength laser excitation. The dependence of red/green (R/G) ratio on the concentration of Yb 3+ ions was investigated. The local environments of dopant ions (Yb 3+ , Er 3+ ) in NaScF 4 were studied using multiple solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The 19 F single pulse and 19 F{ 23 Na} and 19 F{ 45 Sc} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) techniques proved that the dopant rare-earth ions (Yb 3+ , Er 3+ ) preferred to substitute Na + rather than Sc 3+ ions. Such solid-state NMR techniques provide a novel approach to study new phosphors.

In this paper, we demonstrated a one-step template-free strategy to fabricate a hollow mesoporous structured NaYF 4 :Yb,Er nanoparticles with excellent upconversion luminescence. Folic acid (FA), a commonly used cancer-targeting agent, was conjugated on the surface of the nanoparticles based on the presence of free amine groups, which were labeled as NaYF 4 :Yb,Er-FA HMUCNPs. The properties were extensively studied, which indicated the obtained samples showed a typical hollow mesoporous structure and excellent upconversion luminescence that were useful for cell imaging and drug delivery. The L929 cells viability, hemolysis assay and coagulation test demonstrated good biocompatibility of the samples. The anti-cancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) storage/release properties were demonstrated to be pH-responsive, in which, the drug release might be beneficial at the reduced pH for targeted release and controlled therapy. Moreover, it was found that DOX-loaded NaYF 4 :Yb,Er-FA HMUCNPs exhibited greater cytotoxicity to KB cells than free DOX due to the specific cell uptake by KB cells via folate receptor-mediate endocytosis. Therefore, the multifunctional nanoparticles combining upconversion luminescent property and hollow mesoporous structure have potential for simultaneous targeted anti-cancer drug delivery and cell imaging.

5 nm intense green emission NaYF 4 :Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with pure β phase was synthesized with a simple “green” strategy for the first time. Traditional organic solvothermal method is often applied to prepare the high-quality and uniform UCNPs, but the preparation of lanthanide-oleate complexes is laborious as heating and multistep post-treatment for purification are often required. The water-alcohols solvothermal method is environmentally friendly, but the fabricated UCNPs have big size, poor biocompatibility and high cytotoxicity, which limited their application for cell imaging. Herein, NaYF 4 :Yb/Er UCNPs were prepared with rare-earth nitrates RE(NO 3 ) 3 (RE=Y 0.80 Yb 0.18 Er 0.02 ) as precursors and diethylene glycol (DEG)/ethylene glycol (EG)/water as the solvent. A facile green solvothermal method with the temperature being controlled at 300 °C was developed. The as-prepared NaYF 4 :Yb/Er UCNPs were characterized and were found to have enhanced UC emission and controllable particle size. The as-prepared UCNPs were further functionalized via folic acid coating for the targeted imaging and improved bio- compatibility. It was made the UCNPs potential for upconversion bioimaging of living cells by the strong upconversion luminescence, the excellent biocompatibility, and the super-small size. The good colloidal stability and low cell cytotoxicity of the as-prepared UCNPs and the developed synthesis protocol might advance both the fields of UCNPs and biomolecule-based nanotechnology for future studies.

LuVO4:Eu3+ nano/microcrystals with different morphologies/sizes including nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanodisks, nanoquadrangles, sub-microflakes, microspheres, and bulks were successfully synthesized by a mild solvothermal process using tartaric acid (TA) as the template. The amount of tartaric acid (TA) and the initial pH value play vital roles in controlling the morphologies of LuVO4 products. Besides, the reaction temperature was responsible for the generation of pure LuVO4 crystals in the presence of TA. Based on this, the possible formation mechanism of multi-morphologies was proposed. Furthermore, the dependence of luminescence performance on morphology has been discussed in detail. The LuVO4:Ln3+ (Ln = Tm3+, Er3+, Sm3+, Eu3+) nanoparticles show the characterized transition of Ln3+ and give bright blue, green, orange-red and red emission. Moreover, blue-green, green-yellow, pink, yellow-pink and white light can be obtained by adjusting the amount of doped Ln3+ ions and the corresponding concentrations of the LuVO4 host. This general and simple method may be of much significance in the synthesis of many other rare earth inorganic materials.

In the present study, Er and Yb co-doped TiO 2 (Er-Yb:TiO 2 ) nanorod arrays were grown with a hydrothermal method , and perovskite solar cells were fabricated using them as an electron transfer material. The photovoltaic performance of the solar cells based on Er-Yb:TiO 2 was enhanced compared with that of solar cells based on un-doped TiO 2 . The power conversion efficiency of the solar cells on Er-Yb:TiO 2 increased to 13.4%, which is 20.8% higher than that of the solar cells based on un-doped TiO 2 . The experimental results indicate that the larger open circuit voltage could be due to the larger conduction band difference between Er-Yb:TiO 2 and perovskite material. The enlarged short circuit current could be attributed to the faster electron transfer, reduced recombination, and the upconversion of Er-Yb:TiO 2 NRs.

Traditional methods for latent fingerprint (LFP) detection often suffer from insufficient contrast and background interference, limiting their effectiveness in forensic applications, particularly in complex environments. This study introduces an innovative approach that combines Fe 3+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with digital image processing technology. By optimizing the Fe 3+ doping concentration (15 % mmol) and synthesis temperature (220 °C), the red emission intensity at 655 nm was enhanced by 13.96 times compared to undoped samples. The amplified red emission originates from energy transfer of | 2 F 7/2 , 4 T 1g ⟩ (Yb 3+ -Fe 3+ dimer) to 4 F 9/2 (Er 3+ ) states, coupled with crystalline field symmetry distortion induced by Fe 3+ codoping. Dynamic studies of 4 S 3/2 and 4 F 9/2 states under 980 nm pulsed laser excitation, alongside diffuse reflectance analysis, corroborate the proposed upconversion mechanism. Additionally, The optimized UCNPs demonstrated high biocompatibility and stability, achieving LFP visualization with contrast ratios up to 85.03 % and structural similarity scores exceeding 91.58 % via MATLAB-based digital image processing, a significant improvement over conventional methods. This work establishes a robust, non-toxic LFP detection system with potential applications in forensic science.

The pursuit of high-performance piezo-photocatalysts through structural modifications has been a focal point of investigation within the realm of related scientific disciplines. In this study, we successfully designed Er-doped Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 –BaTiO 3 combined with rare earth ion doping and solid solution modification, and the prepared particles exhibited homogeneous grain sizes and optimized concentrations of oxygen vacancies ( O V ). The synergistic incorporation of O V (accelerator for catalytic reaction) and Er 3+ results in an impressive 12-fold enhancement of the piezo-photocatalytic rate when degrading the Rhodamine B dye. The optimal composition 0.96BNT-0.04BT-Er demonstrates outstanding electrochemical properties , including a superior photocurrent response and minimal impedance, highlighting its exceptional performance in piezo-photocatalysis. The fundamental enhancement in catalytic performance can be attributed to the reconfiguration of the band structure of 0.96BNT-0.04BT-Er, which has been meticulously calculated utilizing DRS and VB-XPS and the internal mechanism was explained in detail. This research serves as a source of inspiration for the investigation of solid solutions among piezo-photocatalysts and sheds light on the vital role of band structure in governing catalytic performance.

Graphical It′s all under control : Ultrasmall NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanocrystals have been prepared by the simultaneous addition of two methanolic solutions of NH 4 F and NaOH into a rare-earth-salt precursor solution. A large number of hexagonal-phase seeds are quickly formed as a result of the low energy barrier, resulting in an ultrasmall particle size. Precise control over the size and crystallographic phase of nanocrystals allows the manipulation of their properties and applications as desired. Hexagonal-phase NaYF 4 (β-NaYF 4 ) upconversion nanocrystals with efficient luminescence are quite desirable for bio-applications, but synthetic control over the nanocrystallite size remains challenging. Herein we verify experimentally that control of the hexagonal-phase nucleation is crucial for controlling the final particle size and the number of hexagonal-phase seeds strongly depends on the actual F(Na):Y ratio. A negligible number of hexagonal-phase seeds were formed at low ratio whereas the high ratio yields a very large number of seeds. We also identify that the actual F(Na):Y ratio is more likely related to the different methods employed for the addition of NH 4 F and NaOH rather than its initial feeding ratio. By taking advantage of this dependence and varying the reaction conditions (temperature and time), β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er nanocrystals with a size smaller than 6 nm can be synthesized. Theoretical modeling shows a good agreement with the experimental results.

This systematic study was conducted on the separation of yttrium (Y) and erbium (Er) from a chloride medium using a mixed extractant system composed of [N1444][P507] and TRPO (trialkylphosphine oxide) in kerosene. This investigation focused on the effects of various extractants, extraction systems, the initial acidity of the aqueous phase, and the phase contact time on the extraction efficiencies of Y and Er. This study showed that using the combination of [N1444][P507] and TRPO notably increased the extraction performance and enhanced the separation factor between Y and Er, outperforming the individual use of P507 or [N1444][P507] under identical conditions. The extraction efficiencies for Y and Er reached 88.4% and 93.3%, respectively, with a separation factor (Er/Y) of 1.84, highlighting the system’s effectiveness in selectively isolating rare earth elements. Optimal stripping conditions were obtained using 0.1 mol/L of HCl, resulting in a successful recovery of 93.1% of Y3+and 78.9% of Er3+from the organic phase. The extraction mechanism involved both ion exchange and ion association. The enthalpy changes (ΔH) associated with the extraction of Y3+(−2.5 kJ·mol−1) and Er3+(4.6 KJ·mol−1) demonstrate that the extraction processes are exothermic, reflecting the thermodynamic differences between the two ions.

A porous Sn–Er–Beta zeolite catalyst was rapidly prepared by introducing Sn source with water bath method and Er source with solid-state ion exchange method. When adding 180 mg catalyst, 225 mg glucose and 10 mL water into a reaction kettle at 200 °C for 2 h, the yield of lactic acid can reach 71.2%. After being recycled 5 times, the lactic acid yield of the catalyst can still reach 45.3%. The physical and chemical properties of Sn–Er–Beta zeolite were characterized, and it was confirmed that the catalyst had a multi-stage pore structure, with Sn and Er elements existing in the zeolite skeleton. Among them, the increase of Lewis acidity, Brønsted acidity and special strong alkaline sites of Sn–Er–Beta zeolite caused by the introduction of Sn, and the Lewis acidic sites are further increased after the introduction of Er. The combination of Sn and Er obviously improves the catalyst’s capability to catalyze glucose and fructose to produce lactic acid. This provides an important reference value for the directional catalytic process of sugars. Graphical abstract

Various optical signals are popularly harnessed to realize anticounterfeiting, encryption, and photoluminescence (PL)-based sensing. However, most phosphors can only achieve single PL output under a fixed excitation, thus simultaneous attainment of multimodal PL behaviors remains an imperative pursuit. Herein, a highly integrated multimodal photon-, temperature-, and mechanically responsive Sr2Ga2SiO7:Zn2+/Er3+/Pr3+(SGS:Zn/Er/Pr) is designed/synthesized via a facile solid-state reaction, endowing tunable down/up-converted (DC/UC) PL, mechanoluminescence (ML), and long-persistent PL (LPL) owing to the synergistic effects of self-activated and dopant-induced electronic transitions. serves as both an emitter and a trap center for the self-(L)PL located at ∼468 nm under λex = 267 nm. These behaviors are further optimized by adjusting the content of and by forming a bridge () between trap levels upon Zn2+ incorporation. The excitation and Zn2+ content-dependent PL can be modified from blue to cyan via conflating dual self-PL from the 4T1 → 4A1 transition of Ga3+ at ∼402 nm and . The green DC/red UC PL from Er3+is observed under λex = 357 and 980 nm, respectively. Nonequivalent substitution of Pr3+ at the Sr2+site and the incorporation of Zn2+ can adjust the charge transfer band energy level position and optimize the trap distribution, achieving long-term storage and highly repeatable/efficient LPL/ML generation. Based on abundant PL multimodes, the single-phased SGS:Zn/Er/Pr shows promising applications in sophisticated anticounterfeiting and latent fingerprint detection. Concurrently, owing to the coupled energy levels 2H11/2/4S3/2 of Er3+and the pressure-dependent ML of Pr3+, the SGS:Zn/Er/Pr is also suitably applied as a temperature/stress sensing agent.
