Highly efficient saturation up-conversion (UC) luminescent Y2O3:Er3+ microspheres have been successfully prepared via a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method. Bright visible luminescence can be clearly seen with a 1.55 μm laser diode excitation power as low as ∼0.03 W cm−2. The up-conversion (UC) emission spectra indicate that the strongest red emission with a peak situated at ∼660 nm originated from the 4I9/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+. The peaks situated at ∼520 and 550 nm can be assigned to the transition from 2H11/2/4S3/2 state to the ground state of Er3+. The high efficient saturation up-conversion emission is related to the highly crystalline structure. These results indicate a new way to enhance UC radiation in rare-earth ion-doped materials prepared using a hydrothermal-homogeneous precipitation method.

A series of 16BaF2–(84 − x)NaPO3–xYF3–yErF3 (x = 0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 mol%; y = 0.1, 0.5, and 1 mol%) glasses were prepared via the conventional melt-quenching method and subsequently heated to synthesize glass ceramics containing Er3+-doped Na5Y9F32 crystals. The structures of glasses and glass ceramics were characterized by multiple advanced one- and two-dimensional solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. At the atomic level, multiple phosphorus species Qn (n = 0, 1, and 2) were resolved. Here, the value n denotes the number of P–O–P bonds, which can be quantified by 2D J-resolved spectroscopy. The connectivity between F− ions and cations was detected by the rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) and the J-coupling based heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC) method. With the increase of YF3 content, the phosphate network depolymerized gradually. 31P and 19F MAS spectra, as well as 23Na {31P} and 23Na {19F} REDOR results, consistently proved that Y3+ ions, replacing partial Ba2+ and Na+ ions, aggregated around phosphorus tetrahedrons [PO4]3−, whereas partial Ba2+ and Na+ ions moved away from [PO4]3− to bond with F− ions and formed Y–F⋯Na and Ba–F⋯Na linkages. All cations could exist as oxygen and fluorine complex ligand units M(OxFy), besides single oxygen ligand units M(Ox+y), where M represents cations in glasses. When YF3 content reached 48% by mole, micro-regions enriched in Y–F⋯Na linkages were formed, which promoted the crystallization. 31P MAS spectra indicated that the crystallization of Na5Y9F32 crystals has not affected the local structure of phosphorus species. Intensive upconversion luminescence can be observed in the fluoro-phosphate glass ceramics containing Er3+:Na5Y9F32 crystals. On the basis of these complementary evidences from solid-state NMR experiments and luminescence spectra, a novel structure evolution model during crystallization is developed.

A series of Bi 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ phosphors with different phases and morphologies were obtained by tuning doping ions, which played a vital role in the upconversion luminescence (UCL). Both Er 3+ single doped and Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped samples exhibit narrow, nearly pure red emission whether excited by 980 nm or 1550 nm. Compared to the sum of emission intensities excited by two single-wavelength (980 nm and 1550 nm) separately, the red emission from Bi 2 O 3 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ with uneven distributed nanometer or micron blocky particles structure excited by two-wavelength simultaneously was enhanced by a factor of 2.41. To further improve the UCL intensity, optical-inert ions such as Na + , Ca 2+ and Gd 3+ were doped into this system. Compared to the optical-inert ions free sample (Bi 2 O 3 :15% Yb 3+ , 2% Er 3+ ), the pure red UCL in Bi 2 O 3 :15% Yb 3+ , 2% Er 3+ with 6% Na + , 2% Ca 2+ and 4% Gd 3+ doping is enhanced by 223.83 or 203.73 times under 980 or 1550 nm excitation, respectively. Meanwhile, the UCL mechanism under the multiwavelength was investigated in detail and its model of UC emission process was proposed.

Smuggling has caused serious adverse effects on the global market and national security, among which drug smuggling is increasingly rampant. Thus, the development of high-tech security strategies has become an urgent challenge for customs supervision. Recently, lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ) doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have opened up new ways for security and anti-fake applications due to their unique optical properties under near-infrared excitation. Here, we propose a novel upconversion microcrystal composed of hexagonal phase NaYF 4 :Ln 3+ capped by sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), successfully used in customs supervision. The addition of SHMP can not only regulate the morphology of microcrystals, but also significantly improve the luminescence properties of UC. The absolute quantum yield is up to 7% at the low power density of 30 W∙cm −2 , above most currently reported levels. Without adding any organic additives, the precise control of particle phase and morphology (e.g., microrod, hexagonal prism and hollow sphere) would be achieved by adjusting the doping ratio of SHMP/Ln 3+ . As the reaction time extends, the morphology of NaYF 4 :Ln 3+ changes from ellipsoid to microrod, while cubic phase transforms into hexagonal phase. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, the green upconversion emission of hexagonal NaYF 4 :Ln 3+ microrods is significantly strengthened, which is more powerful than other observed particles with other shapes. This strong upconversion emission that depends on morphology and phase has huge application potential in security anti-counterfeiting and photonic devices .

The introduction of upconversion materials as spectral converter into photovoltaic devices to harvest and convert near infrared photons to visible photons that can thus be absorbed by perovskite layer is a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of perovskite solar cells . Hence, β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Sc 3+ @NaYF 4 rare-earth doped upconversion nanoparticles with core-shell structure are synthesized. The doped rare-earth ions Yb 3+ and Er 3+ convert near infrared light to red and green light, and the Sc 3+ ions enhance the upconversion luminescence efficiency, which broaden the absorption range of solar irradiation and generate extra photocurrent in the solar cells. The surface defects of β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Sc 3+ is passivated by the even NaYF 4 shell, which results in the obvious enhancement in upconversion emission intensity. Consequently, the perovskite solar cell based on the rare-earth doped upconversion nanoparticle mesoporous layer achieves a high power conversion efficiency of 20.19%, while the device based on TiO 2 mesoporous layer gets an efficiency of 17.44%.

Luminescent thermometry in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window holds significant promise for non-invasive. However, its practical application is severely hindered by thermal quenching at elevated temperatures, which limits the development of highly sensitive NIR-II thermometers capable of thermally enhanced emission. Here, we present a rationally designed integer phonon-matching strategy that enables NIR thermal enhancement specifically in singly Er 3+ -doped Ca 2 YNbO 6 double perovskite hosts. Through combined experimental investigations and rate equation modeling, we reveal that efficient multi-phonon relaxation (MPR) between the Er 3+ : 4 I 11/2 and 4 I 13/2 levels is activated when the electronic energy gap corresponds to an integer multiple ( n ≤ 5) of the dominant phonon energy. This resonant phonon-matching condition facilitates highly efficient MPR with increasing temperature, leading to a pronounced 1.66-fold enhancement in the Er 3+ NIR-II emission. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of NIR thermal enhancement and ratiometric temperature sensing in Ca 2 YNbO 6 : Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Ho 3+ /Pr 3+ crystals, achieving an exceptional relative sensitivity of 0.87% K −1 at 398 K. These findings not only circumvent the thermal quenching limitations of NIR-II phosphors but also establish phonon engineering as a versatile strategy for designing thermally enhanced luminescence, opening new avenues for flexible monitoring of pipeline integrity and organic compound leakage based on differential NIR-II luminescence absorption.

Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ heterovalent co-substitution enables charge compensation and modifies the Er 3+ crystal field in garnet solid solutions. • Upconversion intensity of Er 3+ is enhanced over 4-fold for green emission and 3-fold for red emission. • The FIR thermometry exhibits excellent performance, achieving S r = 1.20% K −1 (@298 K) and δT ∼0.41 K. Heterovalent cation co-substitution is an effective strategy to regulate the crystal field and luminescence in rare-earth-doped phosphors. Here, Er 3+ -activated garnet solid solutions Gd 3 Zn x Ga 5–2 x Ge x O 12 ( x = 0.5–2) (GZG 5–2 x G) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction. A Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ pair was introduced to replace two Ga 3+ ions, enabling charge compensation and modifying the crystal field of Er 3+ . With Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ composition variation, the upconverison of green emission dominates at x = 0.5, while red emission peaks at x = 1. The Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ co-substitution significantly enhances luminescence, with GZG 4 G:10%Er 3+ and GZG 3 G:10%Er 3+ exhibiting over 4-fold (green upconversion) and 3-fold (red upconversion) intensity enhancement compared to GZGG:10%Er 3 + . The optical thermometry was constructed over 298–573 K, with a maximum relative sensitivity (S r ) of 1.20% K −1 and a minimal temperature resolution (δ T ) of ∼ 0.41 K at 298 K. The results demonstrate that the Zn 2+ /Ge 4+ co-substitution effectively tunes the upconversion emission and thermometric performance of Er 3 + -doped garnets, offering a feasible strategy for optimizing garnet-based optical temperature sensors. Rare-earth (RE)-doped upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials are essential for advanced optoelectronic technologies, yet their performance is severely compromised by thermal quenching (TQ) at elevated temperatures, hindering practical deployment in high-temperature environments. In this study, we introduce a defect-mediated strategy to achieve thermally enhanced UCL in Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped Cs 2 NaBiCl 6 double perovskites, focusing on the dynamic behavior of chloride vacancy-related centers (V Cl -related centers) and their possible role in modulating energy transfer between RE ions. By systematically tuning V Cl -related centers relative abundance through different processing routes and LiCl doping, we establish data-consistent mechanistic interpretation and a clear correlative relationship between defect-related states and the thermal enhancement of UCL emission. The ground sample, characterized by high defect density, exhibits a 2.1-fold increase in UCL intensity at 573 K compared to room temperature. With moderate LiCl doping (5%), the thermal enhancement factor increases to 5.9-fold—nearly three times greater than that of the undoped ground counterpart. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Hall effect measurements, and fluorescence lifetime analysis, we show that defect-related states associated with V Cl are consistent with non-radiative trapping centers affecting the Yb 3+ -sensitized upconversion pathway under ambient conditions. Upon heating, the combined results are consistent with a thermally activated reconfiguration of the defect landscape, plausibly involving partial compensation or transformation of V Cl -related centers by mobile chlorine-related species, thereby suppressing non-radiative pathways and enhancing Yb 3+ →Er 3+ energy transfer efficiency. Critically, singly Er 3+ -doped samples show negligible thermal enhancement, confirming that the observed effect specifically targets Yb 3+ sensitizers rather than Er 3+ activators. This work provides a data-supported working model for thermally enhanced UCL in halide double perovskites and establishes a general defect-engineering approach for designing RE-doped UCL materials with superior resistance to thermal quenching. These advances open new avenues for applying such materials in extreme-environment optoelectronic devices, including high-temperature optical sensors and NIR-driven light sources.

The perovskite-based multifunctional integrated light-emitting platform has garnered significant attention due to the ultralow phonon energy and flexible lattice plasticity. Achieving both high-efficiency multiband light emission and excellent thermal stability for extreme conditions remains a critical challenge in system design and performance regulation. Herein, Ho 3+ and Er 3+ co-doped Cs 2 NaYCl 6 crystals suppress multiphonon relaxation, enabling precise control of the cross-relaxation between ions, thereby achieving mutual sensitization and multicolor visible fluorescence. Simultaneously, a parallel near-infrared (NIR) channel is activated through quantum cutting, where a high-energy photon is converted into two NIR photons via successive resonant energy transfer from Ho 3+ to Er 3+ , achieving a high internal quantum yield of 147.6%. Notably, the material exhibits high thermal sensitivity and exceptional anti-thermal quenching, with a luminescence intensity of 145.0% at 433 K relative to that at 313 K, showcasing tremendous potential for high-temperature optical sensing. The dynamic multicolor luminescence and highly efficient NIR emission are successfully integrated through a dual-channel luminescence mechanism, which establishes a multidimensional platform for optical encryption and bioimaging based on multifunctional luminescent system and high thermal stability, providing an innovative strategy for developing high-security anti-counterfeiting and deep tissue imaging.

Inorganic luminescent materials play a critical role in the fields of multimodal anti-counterfeiting. Although integrating multiple luminescence modes into a single matrix is considered a feasible strategy, it still faces significant challenges such as the regulation and identification of trap levels. Herein, Ba 0.75 Al 11 O 17.25 :Eu 2+ ,Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ phosphors integrating multiple luminescence modes, including afterglow, up-conversion luminescence (UCL), photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL), and thermoluminescence (TL) were developed. Importantly, the introduction of the Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ion pair not only suppresses the concentration of shallow traps but also induces the formation of numerous deep traps (1.62 eV), which are essential for multimodal luminescence and enhance the thermal stability of the luminescence. Furthermore, through comprehensive analysis of density functional theory (DFT) calculation, TL curves, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it is confirmed that the trap levels primarily originate from oxygen vacancies and interstitial aluminum. Finally, a highly stable flexible film was fabricated, whose emission intensity and color can be controlled by external light/thermal stimuli, and its applications in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption are demonstrated. This work facilitates the research on advanced luminescent materials and traps regulation mechanisms.

Thermal quenching of luminescence materials poses a major obstacle to the technological application of luminescence thermometry. It still remains challenging to attain thermally enhanced light emissions, especially in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II). Herein, an anomalous thermal dependence of NIR-II luminescence in the negative thermal expansion (NTE) Sc 2 Mo 3 O 12 :Er 3+ /Ho 3+ nanocrystals is reported. Mechanistic investigations affirm that Ho 3+ ion can work as an energy reservoir and back-transfer to Er 3+ ion with the assistance of lattice phonon at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the Ho 3+ -mediated energy feedback is strengthened by the thermal contraction between dopant ions, thereby enabling a remarkable thermal enhancement of NIR-II emission over 11-fold. The opposite thermal response of Er 3+ and Ho 3+ emissions is harnessed for NIR-II ratiometric thermometry, registering exceptional performance in a high-temperature regime ( S r = 1.71% K −1 , δT = 0.2 K at 513 K). These findings may inspire new insights for addressing the thermal quenching of NIR-II luminescence, which also raises exciting opportunities for flexible thermometry in complex settings.

To explore highly sensitive luminescent materials , a series of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Al 2 Mo 3 O 12 microparticles were prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase structure, light harvest ability, morphology, and upconversion (UC) emission characteristics of these synthesized microparticles were investigated systematically. Excited at 980 nm, glaring visible UC emissions are gained in the developed specimens, in which the optimal doping content for Yb 3+ is 7 mol% and the two-photon absorption process contributes to the UC emission mechanism. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the thermometric properties of resultant microparticles are studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent green UC emissions of Er 3+ arising from the thermal coupling energy levels. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of final products are 0.011 K -1 and 1.09% K −1 , respectively, and they are barely influenced by Yb 3+ contents. Besides, via exploring the lifetimes of 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 levels of Er 3+ at various temperatures, the relative sensitivities of resultant microparticles are determined to be 0.27% and 0.26% K −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the newly developed microparticles can be adopted to fabricate fluorescent ink to realize optical anti-counterfeiting and visual temperature monitoring. Our studies demonstrate that Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -codoped Al 2 Mo 3 O 12 microparticles with strong UC emissions possess great potential for multimode visual optical thermometry applications.
