An Ultra-stable Eu3+ Doped Yttrium Coordination Polymer with Dual-function Sensing for Cr(VI) and Fe(III) Ions in Aqueous Solution

Fazheng Huang,Xinhao Li,Zhen Zhang,Ziqi Jiang,Guoqiang Wang,Lingyun Li,Yan Yu

The exploration of a dual-functional sensor is the key to effectively detect the Cr(VI) and Fe(III) cations in water, which is important to human health and environmental sustainability. Because of the phase stability and excellent luminescence, the rare-earth coordination polymers have great potential as dual-functional sensors. Here, we develop a Y 0.91 Eu 0.09 (H 2 O) 2 {C 6 H 3 (CO 2 ) 3 }(MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ )-based dual-function luminescent sensor on Cr(VI) and Fe(III), which exhibits excellent phase stability and dispersibility in water. The luminescence of MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ aqueous suspension quenches on Fe 3+ with Stern-Volmer constant K sv of 1.79 × 10 3 M -1 and limit of detection of 17 μM. The MIL-92(Y):9%Eu 3+ aqueous suspension also has turn-off sensing ability towards Cr 2 O 7 2- and CrO 4 2- with K sv values of 3.5 × 10 3 and 6.14 × 10 3 M -1 , respectively. It has detection limitations of 10 and 5 μM on Cr 2 O 7 2- and Cr 2 O 7 2- ions, respectively.

Mechanism of metal sulfides accelerating the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and promoting the degradation of As(III) by oxalate

Junhui Yang,Wenlei Wang,Jinglin Yin,Yanmei Li,Ziyang Xiang,Yi Peng,Ying Yan,Jing Wang,Hongbo Xiao

In this study, a matrix composite material of CdZnS and α-FeOOH on carbon cloth (CZS@FeOOH@CC) was prepared by a hydrothermal method , and was used for the degradation of As(III). The composite material has good photocatalytic activity of removing As(III) in the presence of oxalate. CZS@FeOOH@CC can completely degrade 10 mg/L As(III) within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The influence factors of CZS@FeOOH@CC composite material on catalytic oxidation of As(III) were also studied in the oxalate system. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of As(III) is affected by the oxalate concentration in the reaction system, and the atmosphere plays a major role in the degradation of As(III). Under visible light, oxalate first combines with Fe(III) on the surface of iron oxide to form Fe(III)-oxalate complex, and then the Fe(III)-oxalate composite is activated to produce·C 2 O 4 − . In the presence of oxygen, Fe(II) readily reacts with O 2 and oxidizes to Fe(III). The introduction of CdZnS promoted the separation of interfacial electron holes, and accelerated the REDOX cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III). This study provides a feasible and simple method for accelerating the catalytic removal of heavy metals from wastewater by iron-based materials.

Facile preparation of novel magnetic mesoporous FeMn binary oxides from Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel for antimony removal from water

Qiao Li,Xinyue Ma,Chengsi Qi,Rui Li,Wei Zhang,Jiansheng Li,Jinyou Shen,Xiuyun Sun

Effective removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) has long been an urgent task for protecting human health and environment. In this study, novel magnetic mesoporous Fe Mn binary oxides (MMFMs) were fabricated via calcinating the Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel, and the structure of MMFMs were closely related to the Fe:Mn ratio. Owing to the mesoporous structure together with synergistic effect of Fe Mn binary component, the MMFMs exhibited excellent mass transfer and adsorption ability to Sb(III) and Sb(V). MMFM 3 achieved a maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacity of 281.5 and 204.6 mg/g, respectively. Co-existing anions of Cl − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− exhibited marginal influence on the adsorption for both Sb(III) and Sb(V), except the PO 4 3− for Sb(III) and SiO 3 2− or PO 4 3− for Sb(V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation revealed that high valence Mn(IV) was mainly responsible for the oxidation transformation of the highly toxic Sb(III) into less toxic Sb(V), while the FeO x content played major role for the adsorption of Sb(V). The generated inner-sphere Fe O Sb complex between Fe-OH groups and Sb(III/V) dominantly contributed to the removal of Sb(III/V). Overall, mesoporous structure, magnetic separation ability, excellent adsorption performance together with exceptional regeneration properties demonstrated the great potential of MMFMs for Sb(III/V) remediation.

Strongly enhanced Fenton-like oxidation (Fe/peroxydisulfate) by BiOI under visible light irradiation: A novel and green strategy for Fe(III) reduction

Yongfei Tong,Peng Zhou,Yang Liu,Ningruo Wang,Wei Li,Feng Cheng,Bo Yang,Juan Liang,Yongli Zhang,Bo Lai

In order to accelerate the photo-Fenton reaction process of Fe(III) under visible light irradiation, BiOI was introduced into the Fe(III)/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The catalytic oxidation performance of vis-light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was evaluated using bisphenol AF (BPAF) as a representative organic contaminant . Within 30 min, nearly 100% of BPAF was degraded, proving that the system had an excellent ability to degrade organic pollutants in water. Free radical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), and molecular probing experiments determined that the main reactive species in the system were hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ). The comparative experiments showed that the degradation rates were closely related to the PDS consumption, while the Fe(II) absorbed on the surface of BiOI was responsible for the PDS consumption. The production pathway of Fe(II) was analyzed by XRD, FTIR and XPS characterization, the Fe(III) on the surface of BiOI was reduced by photogenerated electrons to generate Fe(II). The result confirmed that the reduction of Fe(III) by photogenerated electrons could effectively inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs, and accelerate the reduction progress of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle that was the rate-limiting step in PDS activation. Afterwards, a reliable mechanism for degradation of BPAF in visible light/BiOI/Fe(III)/PDS system was proposed. Finally, the influence of reactant dosages, visible light intensity , initial pH, humic acid (HA) and anions in the solution on the degradation of BPAF were discussed.

Energy-Efficient, Room-Temperature, and Facile Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots from Interstitial Compound TiC for the Selective Detection of Fe(III)

Wenzhong Wang,Xuting Bai,Hao Zhou,Jiajia Shan,Xue Wang

The synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from renewable resources is extensively regarded as a green approach, but this method is generally accompanied by high energy consumption and complex byproducts, which limit the large-scale production of CQDs. In this work, titanium carbide-derived CQDs (TiC-CQDs) were synthesized only by mixing titanium carbide and hydrogen peroxide (1 wt %) at room temperature. The resulting byproduct was converted to a precipitate by sodium hydroxide to purify the TiC-CQDs, and the reaction mechanism was further explored. The average lateral size of TiC-CQDs is 4.2 ± 1.1 nm and shows excellent fluorescence properties. Moreover, in an acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution, the fluorescence of TiC-CQDs could be selectively quenched by a ferric ion (Fe3+) with a broad concentration range of 0.2–5 μM and 5–60 μM and a detection limit as low as 0.14 μM. Due to the absence of the energy input, complex equipment, and nontoxic and harmless precursors, the novel room-temperature synthesis route of TiC-CQDs is energy-efficient, safe, green, and economical, and has great potential in industrial application.

IR780-Loaded Hyaluronic Acid@Gossypol–Fe(III)–EGCG Infinite Coordination Polymer Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient Tumor Photothermal/Coordinated Dual Drugs Synergistic Therapy

Siyuan Luo,Ya Wang,Shihong Shen,Peng Tang,Zeying Liu,Shuai Zhang,Daocheng Wu

A novel strategy called “two-stage dual-synergistic tumor therapy (TDTT),” which combines photothermal therapy with infinite coordination polymers (ICPs) chemotherapy at the first stage in the short term and two drugs of ICPs synergistic chemotherapy (coordinated dual drugs chemotherapy) at the second stage in the long term, is proposed. This strategy is achieved by preparing IR780-loaded hyaluronic acid (HA) encapsulated gossypol–Fe(III)–epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) ICP nanoparticles (HA@IRGFE ICP NPs), which have IR780 inclusions, a natural gossypol, and EGCG coordinated with Fe 3+ framework, and a HA shell. It is found that the HA@IRGFE ICP NPs’ diameter is 120.0 ± 39.5 nm and has tumor-targeting ability and can be rapidly released in tumor environment. Their photothermal conversion efficiency is greatly improved to 47.8%, and the total combination index of TDTT is 0.38, which indicates an excellent synergistic therapy result. These HA@IRGFE ICP NPs show low toxicity with a high tolerated dose (30.0 mg kg −1 ), a high tumor inhibition rate of 98.7%, and a very low tumor recurrence rate over 60 days (12.5%) with TDTT strategy, indicating their great potential applications in the field of tumor therapy.

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots for highly selective and sensitive fluorescent detection of Fe(III) ions and L-cysteine

Wu Huifang,Jiang Jiahui,Gu Xiaoting,Tong Changlun

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with a high quantum yield (69%) and excellent photoluminescent properties were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid and cysteine as precursors. The cytotoxicity of N,S-CQDs was evaluated through the MTT assays using HepG2 cells as the target. The cell viability is still >95% after a 24 h incubation with particles in a concentration of up to 300 μg·mL −1 , thereby indicating low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility of N,S-CQDs. The emission spectra of the N,S-CQDs are nearly independent of the excitation wavelengths in the range from 280 to 380 nm and have the strongest fluorescence emission centered at 415 nm. Co-doping with N and S promotes the electron-transfer rate and coordination interaction between N,S-CQDs and Fe(III) ions which acts as a quencher of fluorescence. Fluorescence can be recovered, however, by addition of L-Cys. Hence, the N,S-CQDs act as a highly sensitive and selective “turn-off-on” probe for the determination of Fe(III) or Cys. The limits of detection are 14 nM for Fe(III) and 0.54 μM for Cys. The interferences by 17 common metal ions and heavy metal ions, 12 other quenchers and 16 amino acids were investigated and found to be tolerable. The probe was successfully applied for cellular imaging of Fe(III) in HepG2 cells by using fluorescence microscopy. Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with a high quantum yield of 69% were prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. They are shown to be a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent “turn-off-on” probe for Fe(III) ions and cysteine.

Cyclodextrin reduced Fe(III) nanozyme-based colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode assay for early monitoring meat freshness by sensitive detection of hypoxanthine

Sujuan Sun,Junqing Yang,Gang-Gang Yang,Xiaoxiao Wang,Xinya Han

A simple and sensitive method for monitoring the freshness of meat products is crucial for safeguarding food hygiene and human health. Here, we synthesized an environmentally friendly β -CD@Fe nanozyme through a one-pot solvothermal method, enabling colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode detection of hypoxanthine (Hx). In the xanthine oxidase (XOD)/nanozyme enzymatic cascade system, Hx ultimately led to the oxidation of colorless TMB to blue oxTMB, accompanied by enhanced absorbance at 652 nm and an increased temperature under 808 nm laser irradiation. The proposed dual-mode assay for Hx exhibited a good linear relationship in the range of 1–40 μM, achieving low detection limits of 0.29 μM (colorimetric) and 1.0 μM (photothermal), respectively. The β -CD@Fe nanozyme, characterized by its environmental friendliness, mild synthesis conditions, and high peroxidase-like activity, was successfully applied for the sensitive analysis of Hx in actual meat samples. This advancement offers promising potential for applications in food safety supervision.

Activated hydrogen-promoted self-generation of H2O2 and reduction of Fe(III) mediated by Pd-based catalysts: A green Fenton-like process

Yijun Chen,Meina Cheng,Hailiang Yang,Sanjian Ma,Long Jin,Zixia Lin,Xin Liu

The traditional Fenton process has two issues that hinder its further application and promotion. One is the generation of large amounts of iron sludge. The other is the safe storage and transport of explosive H 2 O 2 . The problems could be solved by accelerating to regenerate Fe(II) and realizing to self-generate H 2 O 2 . The key to the solution lies in the use of reducing active hydrogen [H] to supply electrons. The effect of different loading methods of Pd 0 nanoparticles (NPs), active centres for [H] generation, on the catalytic performance is unknown. Herein, the Pd/UiO-66(Zr) (Pd 0 NPs loaded on the surface of UiO-66(Zr)) and Pd@UiO-66(Zr) (Pd 0 NPs confined into the pores of UiO-66(Zr)) were synthesized. It confirmed that the [H] could be used to promote to regenerate Fe(II) and self-generate H 2 O 2 . Using only a trace amount of ferrous (25 μM) and without H 2 O 2 , the trimethoprim (20 mg·L −1 ) could be thoroughly removed within 90 min. Moreover, the stability of Pd@UiO-66(Zr) was slightly superior to that of Pd/UiO-66(Zr) because of the confinement effect of pore wall on Pd 0 NPs, as well as the interception effect on the intermediate products that can be complexed with Pd 0 NPs.

Amino-functionalized Fe/Co bimetallic MOFs for accelerated Fe (III)/Fe (II) cycling and efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole in Fenton-like system

Xianbing Zhang,Yuheng Liu,Jiajia Yuan

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as important Fenton-like materials for environmental remediation. However, their applications are often hindered by slow cycling between Fe (III) and Fe (II). This study aimed to address the slow Fe (III)/Fe (II) cycling limitation of Fe-MOFs through dual modification strategy: bimetallic modification and amino functionalization. A series of NH2-MOF(Fe, Co) catalysts with varying Fe/Co ratios were synthesized via a hydrothermal method and evaluated for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The optimized NH2-MOF(Fe, Co) catalyst (Fe/Co ratio = 7:3) exhibited substantially enhanced catalytic performance, with SMX removal rate and rate constant in the H2O2 system being 3.2 and 43.5 times higher than those of the Fe-MOF/H2O2 system, respectively. The catalyst demonstrated robust performance across a wide pH range (3.05–7.00), addressing a common limitation of Fenton-like systems. Physicochemical characterization revealed that the enhanced performance was attributed to two key factors: the synergistic effect between Co and Fe in the bimetallic active center, and improved electron transfer to the central metal due to -NH2 functionalization. These modifications effectively addressed the Fe (III)/Fe (II) redox cycling limitation. The proposed reaction mechanism provides insights into SMX degradation pathways in the NH2-MOF(Fe, Co)/H2O2 system. This study presents an efficient and stable MOF-based Fenton-like catalyst with potential applications in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Improvement of water permeance and scaling resistance of nanofiltration membranes with Fe(III) - tannic acid modified MoS2 interlayer for drinking water treatment

Tong Wei,Kai Li,Senlin Shao,Gang Wen,Jianwei Bu,Tinglin Huang

Nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) are promising candidates for advanced drinking water treatment due to their excellent retention capabilities, however, their widespread application is limited by low water permeance and susceptibility to inorganic scaling. In this study, Fe(III)-tannic acid‑molybdenum disulfide (Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 ) nanosheets were synthesized and employed as an interlayer material for NFM fabrication. The resulting NFMs were then created through interfacial polymerization, labeled as MoS 2 -1.5, MoS 2 -3.0, and MoS 2 -4.5 based on varying materials loading. Experimental results indicated that the membrane morphology, surface roughness, electronegativity, amine group content, hydrophilicity, selectivity, and resistance to inorganic scaling were all affected by the amount of Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 loading. The MoS 2 -3.0 NFM exhibited the highest roughness and uniformity (Ra: 111.25 ± 3.30 nm), along with enhanced hydrophilicity and the smallest pore size (0.39 nm) among the Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 NFMs. These characteristics contributed to a high water permeance of 20.19 LMH/bar. Sulfate rejection decreased notably with increasing amine content, while calcium ion rejection showed a slight decline as surface electronegativity increased. Notably, the pore size of the Fe(III)-TA-MoS 2 NFMs remained largely unchanged at low and moderate loadings. Although the MoS 2 -4.5 NFM exhibited even higher water permeance and electronegativity, its surface structure underwent significant changes, leading to inferior performance in terms of scaling resistance and natural organic matter removal compared to the MoS 2 -3.0 membrane. Overall, this study provides a novel strategy for enhance both water permeability and anti-scaling performance of NFMs, offering potential cost reductions for drinking water treatment applications.

Adsorption of low concentrations of bromide ions from water by cellulose-based beads modified with TEMPO-mediated oxidation and Fe(III) complexation

Shengpeng Liu,Gen Cheng,Yun Xiong,Yigang Ding,Xiaogang Luo

Due to strong activity, it is very difficult to remove low concentrations of bromide in medical wastewater by traditional method, thus highly effective and greener adsorbents should be utilized to design. In this work, the cellulose beads (CBs) were modified by the TEMPO-mediated oxidation and then bonded with Fe 3+ to fabricate Fe(III)-complexed carboxylated cellulose beads (Fe-CCBs) adsorbents. Structure and properties of Fe-CCBs were analyzed using Energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), total acidity and basicity groups, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption and Thermogravimetric (TGA). Moreover, batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of Br − was better consistent with general-order kinetic model and Liu isotherm model, which could also further clarify the adsorption process mechanism. Meanwhile, the results revealed that removal of Br- was a spontaneous exothermic process and was more suitable to be carried out under neutral or acidic conditions. Furthermore, the mechanism of adsorption behavior of bromide ions on Fe-CCBs was based on a combination of electrostatic attraction and outer-sphere complexation. The results of this study can provide guidance for the design of novel material adsorbents and the removal of harmful anions from aqueous solutions.
