High Selectivity MEMS C2H2 Sensor for Transformer Fault Characteristic Gas Detection**

Yifeng Xu,Haixia Mei,Yu Bing,Fuyun Zhang,Ning Sui,Tingting Zhou,Xiaopeng Fan,Lijie Wang,Tong Zhang

Graphical In this article, a Sm−Pd bimetal doped SnO 2 -based MEMS C 2 H 2 sensor was prepared for detecting dissolved acetylene gas in transformer oil. It has the unique advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity and low power consumption. Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ), as an important characteristic gas in transformer fault diagnosis, should be accurately detected and effectively distinguished from other dissolved gases (H 2 , CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 4 , CO, CO 2 ), which is crucial to determine whether the fault occurs and the fault type, but also faces challenges now. The rational design and employment of rare earth and noble metals are expected to address this issue. In this work, SnO 2 -3 at% Sm 2 O 3 -1 at% PdO based MEMS gas sensor was prepared to achieve high performance detection of C 2 H 2 which has a response value of 56 to 50 ppm C 2 H 2 , response/recovery time of 2 s/136 s, lower detection limit of 1 ppm, power consumption of 15.5 mW, and weak cross sensitivity to other transformer fault characteristic gases. Lewis acids and bases theory was used to explain the reason why rare earth Sm is a benefit element to improve selectivity to C 2 H 2 . The formation of oxygen vacancies and hetero junctions was used to explain the increased sensitivity of the material. This study proved the feasibility of rare earth and noble metals as potential additives to enable advanced gas-sensitive materials for highly selective transformer fault characteristic gas C 2 H 2 detection.

Gas Sensing with Er-doped ZnFe2O4 Nanofibers Prepared by Facile Electrospinning

Yue Lei,Wang Bo,Huang Yiheng,Feng Changhao

In this study, gas sensors based on Er-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers (E-ZFO NFs) with varying ratios of Er doping were prepared by a facile electrospinning approach. The sensor based on 3% E-ZFO NFs demonstrated an enhanced response value of 30.3 for 100 ppm n -butanol at 175°C, with response and recovery times of 9 s and 94 s, respectively. This is approximately 3.1 times that of undoped ZFO NFs. Moreover, the sensor exhibited a minimum detection limit of 0.1 ppm, with excellent repeatability and selectivity. These results indicate that the sensors utilizing E-ZFO NFs are promising candidates for n -butanol gas sensors.

In-situ generation and stabilization of gas bubbles for multiphase catalysis

Zhengsong Hu,Yiquan Chen,Jie Xu,Jiajia Hao,Haifeng Bao,Xiufang Li,Renchuan You,Ze Xiong,Hengquan Yang,Haolan Xu

Introducing stable gas bubbles in liquid is important for the industrial synthesis of chemicals and intermediates via multiphase reactions because of limited solubility of gaseous reactants such as H 2 and O 2 . Herein, a bubble-stabilized system is constructed via in-situ nucleation of bubbles at the surfaces of various polymer nanofibers that circumvents the repulsive interactions between gas–liquid interfaces and nanofibers. During bubble growth processes, nanofibers are self-assembled and interwoven to build spatial nanofiber network surrounding bubbles, firmly trapping bubbles in the liquid phase. Surprisingly, the immobilization of bubbles in liquid can be sustained up to 20 h. These trapped bubbles can serve as gas storage vessels to remarkably boost the multiphase reactions because of the adequate gas–liquid–solid contact sites as demonstrated by the multiphase nitroarenes reduction in contrast to the bubble-free system. Furthermore, the immobilized bubbles are almost completely utilized (98.9 %) in multiphase reactions. This work provides an enlightenment for capturing and storing bubbles in liquid towards industrial multiphase reactions.

3D Porous MXene Nanosheet/SnO2 Nanoparticle Composites for H2S Gas Sensing

Lu Tang,Huajing Wang,Zhenming Du,Chaoqi Zhu,Chaofan Ma,Dawen Zeng

Due to the large band gap, most metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based gas sensors operate at high temperatures, which greatly limits their performance for gas sensing. In this work, we reported the successful synthesis of nanocomposites consisting of porous MXene nanosheets formed by the sublimation of sulfur and SnO2 nanoparticles (S-PM/SnO2). To prevent the restacking of MXene flakes under van der Waals force, a sacrificial S-template method was employed to transform MXene into a three-dimensional (3D) structure. The presence of MXene lowers the operating temperature. With a high response (∼30.6 – 10 ppm of H2S), rapid response speed (∼16.6 s – 50 ppm of H2S), high sensitivity (∼3.12 ppm–1), low detection limits (distinct response to 100 ppb H2S), and good selectivity at 100 °C, the sensor based on the optimal sample of S-PM/SnO2-6 demonstrates excellent H2S sensing performance. The improvement in H2S gas-sensing capacity can be attributed to the development of heterojunctions at the interface of porous MXene nanosheets (S-PM) and SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs). This leads to an enlarged surface depletion region and an elevated potential barrier, which significantly amplifies the range of resistance variation. These results suggest that S-PM/SnO2 nanocomposite has promising prospects in the realm of low-temperature and highly sensitive H2S detection.

Robot-assisted optimized array design for accurate multi-component gas quantification

Yangguan Chen,Longhan Zhang,Zhehong Ai,Yifan Long,Ji Qi,Pengxiao Bao,Jing Jiang

Designing sensor arrays is a common strategy for detecting mixtures. However, a sensor array designed based on human experience leads to inaccuracies due to cross-sensitivity and information overlap. This difficulty led to the realization that arrays should be optimized as a whole. The conventional array optimizing method involves selecting the best subarray from a limited sensor pool. However, this method did not consider the vast continuous multi-dimensional variable space of each sensing element’s recipe, thus only generating a simpler array with limited detection capacity. To address this problem, we developed a Robot-assisted Optimized Array Design (ROAD) method. This innovative method holistically optimizes the sensor array across a continuous and vast variable space, overcoming the bottlenecks of high dimensionality and high-quality data collection. We applied ROAD to an optoelectronic nose, tasked with detecting a mixture of CO 2 , NH 3 , and water vapor. The method explored an immense space, estimated at the order of 2^(10^7). The implementation of ROAD led to a revolutionary quantitative accuracy, achieving an average relative standard deviation of 1.90%. This advancement has propelled the application of optoelectronic nose from qualitative to quantitative. The successful ROAD of system-wide array optimization has been demonstrated in the optoelectronic nose, validating the potential of the holistically optimized sensor array for accurately quantifying each component in a gas mixture.

Surface-engineered bio-manufactured gas vesicles for multimodal imaging of glioma

Juanjuan Li,Yutong Cui,Xiaoli Jiang,Xue Chi,Hong Li,Xiang Ma,Yanqiong Tang,Denggao Huang,Zhu Liu

Integrated imaging techniques offer enhanced medical insights into the central nervous system by combining different modalities. In glioma diagnosis, the challenge often lies in delivering contrast agents effectively across the blood-brain barrier. We present an integrated multimodal imaging biohybrid, GV@pCY5, which enables blood-brain barrier penetrating as well as fluorescence and ultrasound (FL/US) imaging capabilities. This biohybrid is created by decorating a far-red-fluorescent cyanine dye (CY5) onto polyethyleneimine (PEI)-coated gas vesicles (GV). The layer-by-layer assembly improves the stability and performance of GV@pCY5 under ultrasound, thanks to the hydration shell variation induced by PEI. Given to the blood-brain barrier penetrating ability, GV@pCY5 demonstrates increase both in fluorescence and ultrasound imaging performance compared to single-component systems, proving effective for glioma diagnosis in vivo. This study underscores the potential of the FL/US platform for dual ratiometric imaging of various cerebral conditions.

Bypassing gas-liquid mass transfer resistance in a Fenton wet scrubber for boosting the removal of hydrophobic styrene: Construction of a novel gas-solid-liquid triple-phase interface

Zhiru Suo,Yuan Zhuang,Yanjun Zhao,Peng Zhou,Fushun Li,Binbin Huang,Chen Qu,Wenhui Li,Chuandong Wu,Jiemin Liu

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs, such as Fenton) coupled with wet scrubbers are powerful and eco–friendly for VOCs treatment. However, challenges remain in the efficient removal of hydrophobic VOCs due to the extremely high gas-liquid mass transfer resistance. Herein, we constructed a “gas-solid-liquid triple-phase interface” in a Fenton wet scrubber via fabricating a new amphiphilic catalyst (PAN@Fe 3 O 4 @Nafion), which allows to capture gas bubbles and directly convey the VOCs to catalytic active center through gas transport and bypass the gas-liquid mass transfer (rate–determining) step. Compared with system with the unmodulated catalyst, the removal efficiency of hydrophobic styrene in the triple-phase interface Fenton wet scrubber was improved by 69.0%, the intermediates were dominated by small–molecule fatty acids (98.0%), and the outlet CO 2 concentration and H 2 O 2 consumption increased by 22.1% and 19.6%, respectively. Notably, mechanism analysis via confocal laser scanning microscopy and contact angle measurements revealed the arrangement of hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions on the catalyst surface. Moreover, the affinity ability of bubbles was 2.5 times greater and the mass transfer enhancement factor reached 2.2 in the triple-phase interface Fenton wet scrubber system. This study provides a new avenue for overcoming the gas-liquid mass transfer resistance of hydrophobic VOCs in AOP wet scrubbers.

Continuous interface-coupled COF-MOF membranes for precise CO₂/N₂ gas sieving

Qingping Xin,Zhaoqi Qu,Xinghui Zhang,Xingwei Wang,Jiaxin Wu,Dengdi Wu,Wei Huang,Mengke Wang,Ningning Gao,Xiaoli Ding,Yuzhong Zhang

Composite membranes, which consist of a multi-layer membrane structure comprising an ultra-thin dense separation layer and a porous support layer, are used for gas separation. However, issues such as poor adhesion between layers often arise. In this study, a novel reverse-induced diffusion method was employed to achieve the in situ growth of a covalent organic framework COF (TaPa-1) on one side of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) at room temperature, resulting in the formation of a tightly bonded gutter layer. Subsequently, a metal-organic framework MOF (NH 2 -ZIF-8) was secondarily grown in situ on the TaPa-1 membrane to prepare a PAN/COF-MOF composite membrane with stable interlayer bonding. The TaPa-1 layer, with high gas permeability, and the NH 2 -ZIF-8 layer due to sheltering effect, with high gas selectivity, act synergistically to enable efficient gas sieving and rapid transport. When treating simulated flue gas (CO₂/N₂ = 1:4), the gas separation selectivity of the PAN/COF-MOF composite membrane reach 29.9, with a CO₂ permeability of 825 GPU, achieving excellent CO₂ separation performance. In this study, the PAN/COF-MOF composite membrane is constructed using the reverse-induced diffusion method, achieving stable interlayer bonding and synergistic separation, demonstrating excellent CO₂ permeability and selectivity.

Waveguide microwave gas sensor based on monolithic In2O3 for enhanced ammonia detection

Ling Gao,Juhua Xu,Xianwang Yang,Chang Xu,Xiaolong Wang,Quan Jin

For commonly used chemical resistance sensors, achieving room-temperature detection often results in reduced performance. Microwave gas sensors have been rapidly expanding in recent years, attributed to their advantages of room-temperature operation and low power consumption. Waveguide , as a three-dimensional microwave circuit with separated electric and magnetic field distributions, resulting in high quality factor , is expected to significantly enhance the sensitivity of microwave sensors . Additionally, the hierarchical porous structure of monolithic In 2 O 3 facilitates gas diffusion , further enhancing sensing performance. Herein, a microwave gas sensor is designed by applying porous monolithic In 2 O 3 and waveguide resonator . By adjusting the content of the polymer PVP, In 2 O 3 with different pore sizes is synthesized in which hierarchical porous In 2 O 3 sample with a PVP content of 3.0 g (3.0-HPS In 2 O 3 ) exhibits the best NH 3 sensing properties, including a wide concentration range (0.01–2000 ppm), a low limit of detection (LOD) of 7 ppb, excellent selectivity , good moisture resistance , and long-term stability. This study offers a promising approach for the development of room-temperature ammonia gas sensors with an extended detection range and has preliminarily explored the influence of pore sizes on gas sensing performance.

PVA/CS-based multifunctional hydrogel strain/gas flexible sensor for health monitoring

Qingyuan Zhang,Kai Chen,Qin Chen,Wenlu Hang,Haiyan Feng,Xinyue Zhang,Cunao Feng,Xiaowei Li,Dekun Zhang,Shirong Ge

Flexible sensing materials have emerged as pivotal tools for human health monitoring and motion detection. However, single-functional flexible sensors currently suffer from insufficient versatility to address complex detection demands, particularly in multifaceted application scenarios such as real-time physiological signal monitoring and environmental gas sensing. Herein, a strategy of using PVA and CS as matrix materials is reported to fabricate strain/gas multifunctional flexible hydrogels, which are endowed with ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness via immersion in LiCl electrolyte solution. The as-prepared PVA 7 /CS 3 -LiCl 1.5 hydrogel exhibited remarkable strain sensitivity with response values of 6.5 % (tensile) and − 24 % (compressive) at 8 % strain. After 200 cycles of stretching, the relative resistance remained stable, demonstrating superior mechanical stability and cyclic durability. And relative resistance change (ΔR/R₀) showed linear dependence on strain, with gauge factors (GFs) of 0.45 (1–7 % strain), 2.66 (7–10 % strain), and 0.93 (10–90 % strain), respectively. Optimal performance was achieved at 3 wt% CS and 1.5 mol/L LiCl, where the hydrogel exhibited a 2.5 % response to 20 ppm acetone with 5-fold higher selectivity than benzene, ethanol, and ammonia. These multifunctional hydrogels enable versatile room-temperature applications, particularly for human physiological signal monitoring, offering promising strategies for sensing materials in complex environments.

Separation performance of dithienyl benzothiadiazole-based stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography

Jianlin Peng,Tao Sun,Lianqian Wu,Meiling Qi,Xuebin Huang

This work explored the separation performance of two new dithienyl benzothiadiazole (TBT)-based materials, namely 4,7-di(5-allyl-2-thienyl)benzothiadiazole (TBT-AA) and 4-(5-allyl-2-thienyl)-7-(5-dodecyl-2-thienyl)benzothiadiazole (TBT-AC12), as the stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The TBT-AA and TBT-AC12 columns exhibited medium polarity and achieved a column efficiency of 3700 plates per m and 3800 plates per m, respectively, by n-dodecane under 100 °C. They showed high-resolution performance for analytes of different varieties and advantageous resolving capability for positional and structural isomers, such as chloronitrobenzenes, dibromobenzenes, cymenes and hexanes, over the polysiloxane stationary phase with similar polarity. Moreover, the TBT-based stationary phases display different retention behaviours from the conventional phase via diversified molecular interactions covering π–π and π–π EDA, halogen-bonding, H-bonding interactions and van der Waals forces. Also, they exhibited good column repeatability with the relative standard deviation (RSD) values of less than 0.12% for run-to-run, 1.8% for day-to-day and 5.0% for column-to-column, respectively. This work demonstrates the good potential of the TBT-based stationary phases for GC separations.

Nanostructured copper hydroxide-based interfaces for liquid/liquid and liquid/gas separations

Jingwei Lu,Gan Miao,Zhongshuai Gao,Ting Xu,Fangchao Li,Xiao Miao,Yuanming Song,Xiangming Li,Guina Ren,Xiaotao Zhu

Development of an under-liquid super-repellent (ULSR) surface that can act as a versatile platform for separating both liquid/liquid and liquid/gas mixtures is highly desirable, yet still hard to realize. Herein, to address this challenge, a Cu(OH) 2 nanowire textured surface on copper mesh was developed through a simple immersion process. The resulting Cu(OH) 2 nanowire surface displayed underwater superoleophobicity, underoil superhydrophobicity, and unusual dual superoleophobicity under immiscible oil-oil system. Exploiting its superlyophobicity under-liquid, the Cu(OH) 2 nanowire covered copper mesh was applied to separate oil/water mixtures, emulsions, and oil/oil mixtures effectively, even though the surface tension between two liquids was just 2.4 mN/m. The separation efficiency is higher than 99% for all mixtures, and the oil/water separation efficiency can maintain above 98% even after 40 cycles. Furthermore, owing to its superaerophobicity underwater and underoil, the obtained copper mesh was also able to separate gas from bulk water and oil efficiently. This work is hoped to provide a key addition to the fields of ULSR surfaces as well as membrane-based separation techniques.
