Self-healing and tough GO-supported hydrogels prepared via surface-initiated ATRP and photocatalytic modification

Dechao Fan,Wenxiang Wang,Hou Chen,Liangjiu Bai,Huawei Yang,Donglei Wei,Lixia Yang,Zhongxin Xue,Yuzhong Niu

Hydrogels with the properties of self-healing, toughness, stiffness and strength have great potential for use in smart materials. Herein, self-healing and tough hydrogels were successfully prepared after adding modified graphene oxide (GO) composites, which grafted the functional polymers onto the surface of GO. GO@polyacrylonitrile (GO@PAN) was synthesized via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) using GO@BiBB as the ATRP initiator. The nitrile group on GO@PAN was converted to pyridine, for which 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrafluoroborate (TPPT) was used as the photocatalyst. The prepared GO composite was added into polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogels formed by in situ radical polymerization. These tough hydrogels not only have high mechanical strength, but also show excellent self-healing performance. This strategy can provide a novel and universal route for the fabrication of smart hydrogels in biomedical and engineering fields.

Self-assembling GO/modified HEC hybrid stabilized pickering emulsions and template polymerization for biomedical hydrogels

Xiangdong Wang,Kexin Yu,Ran An,Linglin Han,Yulin Zhang,Lingying Shi,Rong Ran

Graphene oxide(GO), as an amphiphilic and biocompatible material, is often used to prepare Pickering emulsion. However, the preparation of stable Pickering emulsion by a low concentration of GO is very challenging. In this research, we prepared the hydrophobic modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (mHEC) which contained quaternary ammonium group and GO which the water contact angle was 84°–86°. A stable, low cost, and biocompatible Pickering emulsion was fabricated by a low concentration of GO and different contents of mHEC. The effects of mHEC concentration, electrolyte concentration, pH, and oil/water ratio on the stability of Pickering emulsion were investigated. What’s more, we prepared the biomedical macroporous polyacrylamide hydrogel by the GO/mHEC composite stabilized emulsion template for drug controlled-release. The composite hydrogel by Pickering emulsion template is a potential drug controlled-release delivery platforms. Furthermore, our strategy is extremely versatile, as Pickering particles, polymer and the monomer of hydrogel can all be varied.

Improved desalination properties of hydrophobic GO-incorporated PVDF electrospun nanofibrous composites for vacuum membrane distillation

Hongbin Li,Wenying Shi,Xianhua Zeng,Shoufa Huang,Haixia Zhang,Xiaohong Qin

Hydrophobic nanofibers have attracted great attention in the membrane distillation (MD) process because of their extremely high specific surface area. In this study, hydrophobic nanofibrous composites for vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) consisting of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous layer and a hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric (NWF) substrate were presented. PVDF nanofibrous layer was directly fabricated on the surface of PP NWF substrate by electrospinning technique. 1 H , 1 H , 2 H , 2 H -perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FTES) functionalized GO nanosheets were incorporated in the PVDF nanofiber layer during the electrospinning process to enhance the hydrophobicity and permeation water flux for VMD. Membrane surface morphology and composition were characterized through SEM and FTIR. The effects of FTES-GO nanosheets content on the VMD desalination properties were investigated. And the transfer mechanism of water vapors through the FTES-GO incorporated nanofibrous layers was also proposed. Compared with the original PVDF nanofibrous layer, the surface hydrophobicity, liquid entry pressure ( LEP ) and water permeability of the FTES-GO incorporated nanofibrous layers had all been improved. When FTES-GO content was 4 wt%, the WCA increased from 104.0° for the neat PVDF nanofibrous layer to 140.5° for the modified nanofibrous layer. The permeation water flux reached a maximum value of 36.4 kg m −2  h −1 . It was two times the water flux of the original membrane and meanwhile the salt rejection remained above 99.9% (50 °C, 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution and permeation pressure of 31.3 kPa). No obvious wetting phenomenon was observed for FTES-GO incorporated membrane during the continuous VMD experiment for 60 h.

Preparation of a novel nano-Fe3O4/triethanolamine/GO composites to enhance Pb2+/Cu2+ ions removal

Ren Hong-shan,Cao Zhan-fang,Wen Xin,Wang Shuai,Zhong Hong,Wu Zai-Kun

In this paper, a magnetic nano-Fe 3 O 4 /triethanolamine/GO composite (TEA-GO-FE) was prepared by using graphene oxide (GO), triethanolamine (TEA), and ferric chloride. The result indicates that triethanolamine acted as an important role for the growing of Fe 3 O 4 and adsorption ability of composite material. The synthesis mechanism of TEA-GO-FE was investigated through the medium of SEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR, and TEM. The characterization results indicated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have been successfully loaded on the surface of graphene oxide and they were encapsulated by TEA and have excellent stability. According to the results of XRD, the general particle size of Fe 3 O 4 on TEA-GO-FE was 27.5 nm. In order to understand the adsorption properties of TEA-GO-FE for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ , this article uses a static adsorption study method. The optimized adsorption conditions are as follows: pH = 5.0, temperature is 293.15 K, and the ion concentration is 100 mg/L. Under the optimized prerequisites, the adsorption capacities of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ were 121.5 mg/g and 68.7 mg/g, separately. Through thermodynamic as well as kinetic studies, the adsorption process of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ on TEA-GO-FE is a self-heating process.

In Situ Constructing Flexible V2O5@GO Composite Thin Film Electrode for Superior Electrochemical Energy Storage

Bingbing Hu,Qin Xiang,Yuan Cen,Sha Li,Lijun Liu,Danmei Yu,Changguo Chen

In this work, uniform wrinkle V2O5@GO flexible thin films have been successfully synthesized via a facile drop-casting and annealing process from the composite sol-gel. It is found that VG8 composite thin film with an appropriate mass ratio (8:1) of V2O5 and GO shows an outstanding specific capacitance of 397 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, high-class rate capability (77%) and good cycling stability with 98% capacitance retention over 2000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1, which is much superior than pure V2O5 thin film electrode. A full solid-state symmetric energy storage device is assembled using the VG8 composite thin film, exhibiting high energy density of 17.66 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 249.9 W kg−1, as well as excellent cycling stability (89.3% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Impressively, three charged device in series can light up a yellow light emitting diodes (LEDs), demonstrating its potential in futher energy storage applications.

Hydrophilic encapsulation of reduced graphite oxide (r-GO) by admicellar polymerization for application in biosensors

Feifei Li,Luyao Wang,Mengmeng Li,Lin Lei

Herein, hydrophilic encapsulation of reduced graphite oxide (r-GO) was achieved by admicellar polymerization. Functional polymer thin films were coated on the r-GO surface for enhancing the water dispersion of r-GO. The morphology was observed by TEM and SEM. Moreover, a PHEMA thin film was coated on the surface of r-GO by admicellar polymerization using a surfactant at low concentration. The percentage of the film coated on r-GO was calculated to be 40 wt% by thermal analysis. FT-Raman has been applied to illustrate that admicellar polymerization is a nondestructive functionalization method. The water contact angles decreased from 105° to 63° after admicellar polymerization; this indicated the successful hydrophilic encapsulation of r-GO. Moreover, r-GO/PHEMA-modified glassy carbon (r-GO/PHEMA/GC) functioned well as an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of hemopexin-like domain of matrix metalloproteinase 14 (PEX-14).

Improving the crystallization and fire resistance of poly(lactic acid) with nano-ZIF-8@GO

Zhang Mi,Shi Xiaowei,Dai Xiu,Huo Changan,Xie Jiong,Li Xu,Wang Xinlong

The nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids were synthesized and blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by solution method. The effect of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids on the crystallization was investigated by DSC and POM. The results showed that low addition amount of nano-ZIF-8@GO had a significant influence on the crystallization behavior of PLA. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLA/ZIF-8@GO nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% of ZIF-8@GO were increased to 49.63 MPa and 24.10% compared with 35.83 MPa and 17.66% of the pure PLA, respectively. The addition of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids also enhanced the flame retardancy of PLA, and the mechanism was proposed.

Electrochemical immunosensor detection of tumor markers based on a GO composite nanoprobe for signal amplification

Jing Wang,Dongcheng Yang,Mifa Chen,Beifang Liu,Hou Chen,Hui Xu,Wenxiang Wang,Liangjiu Bai

A novel strategy based on nanoprobes for signal amplification was introduced in an electrochemical immunoassay platform. The nanoprobes based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-r-poly(acrylic acid) (PHEMA-r-PAA) and graphene oxide (GO) have the effect of double signal amplification. The resulting sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was able to detect the tumor marker alpha fetal protein (AFP) with high sensitivity and high selectivity. A good linear relationship could be observed in the AFP concentration range of 3.5 pg mL−1 to 35 ng mL−1 (R2 = 0.9898), and the minimum detection limit was 0.106 pg mL−1. In addition, the electrochemical immunosensor exhibited good stability and could be applied to AFP detection in clinical serum.

Fabrication of MCC/Cu2O/GO composite foam with high photocatalytic degradation ability toward methylene blue

Jun Nie,Chen-yu Li,Ze-yuan Jin,Wen-ting Hu,Jia-hao Wang,Ting Huang,Yong Wang

In this work, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) particles and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were simultaneously incorporated into the microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) foam to fabricate the MCC/Cu 2 O/GO composite foam toward methylene blue (MB) photocatalytic degradation. The interaction between Cu 2 O and GO and the morphologies of the composite foams were investigated. The results showed that there was a hydrogen bonding interaction between Cu 2 O and GO, which promoted the exfoliation of GO nanosheets and the dispersion of Cu 2 O in the composite foam. The MCC/Cu 2 O/GO composite foams not only exhibited high photocatalytic degradation ratio toward MB compared with the pure Cu 2 O particles and the common MCC/Cu 2 O composite foams, but also exhibited much higher derogation rate compared with the Cu 2 O-based photocatalytic degradation materials as reported in literature. A concept of ‘micro-reactor’ was proposed to explain the mechanisms for the largely enhanced degradation rate. Furthermore, the cycling measurements for the photocatalytic degradation of MB was also evaluated.

Constructing GO films/CdS nanoparticles/MoS2 nanosheets ternary nanojunction with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity

Min Wang,Haitao Zhao,Limin Zhao,Jianmin Dou,Xingliang Yin

CdS, as a visible-light responsible photocatalyst , has gained considerable attentions for its relatively narrow bandgap and negative conduction band edge. However, its photocatalytic activity is hindered by challenges such as severe charge recombination, insufficient active sites and poor stability. In this work, a robust strategy is proposed to optimize the transfer channel for charge carriers and enhance the active sites by heterojunction and cocatalyst engineering. The well-designed GO/CdS/MoS 2 shows remarkable durability (20 h without significant loss of H 2 production rate) with a high photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 1.45 mmol h −1 g −1 (about 6.6-fold enhancement compared with CdS) at GO content of 0.1 wt% and MoS 2 loading amount of 5.0 wt%. The bolstered H 2 production rate is attributed to the augmented transfer channels of mass owing to the holey structure of GO , the enhanced active sites since the introduction of MoS 2 , and the unidirectional transfer of electrons from CdS to MoS 2 , which is ascribed to the built-in electric field in the CdS/MoS 2 interface. Thanks to the directional transfer of holes from CdS to GO in the GO/CdS interface, the assemblage of holes in CdS is prevented, thus contributing to the amplified stability GO/CdS/MoS 2 . Our findings offer insights for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of CdS based photocatalysts, which may inspire the development of the heterostructure photocatalysts for solar-to-fuel conversion.

Highly Reproducible Ag NPs/CNT-Intercalated GO Membranes for Enrichment and SERS Detection of Antibiotics

Lu−Lu Qu,Ying-Ya Liu,Ming-Kai Liu,Guo-Hai Yang,Da-Wei Li,Hai-Tao Li

The increasing pollution of aquatic environments by antibiotics makes it necessary to develop efficient enrichment and sensitive detection methods for environmental antibiotics monitoring. In this work, silver nanoparticles and carbon nanotube-intercalated graphene oxide laminar membranes (Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes) were successfully prepared for enrichment and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of antibiotics. The prepared Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes exhibited a high enrichment ability because of the π–π stacking and electrostatic interactions of GO toward antibiotic molecules, which enhanced the sensitivity of SERS measurements and enabled the antibiotics to be determined at sub-nM concentrations. In addition, the nanochannels created by the intercalation of CNTs into GO layers resulted in an 8-fold enhancement in the water permeance of Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes compared to that of pure GO membranes. More importantly, the Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes exhibited high reproducibility and long-term stability. The spot-to-spot variation in SERS intensity was less than 15%, and the SERS performance was maintained for at least 70 days. The Ag NPs/CNT-GO membranes were also used for SERS detection of antibiotics in real samples; the results showed that the characteristic peaks of antibiotics were obviously recognizable. Thus, the sensitive SERS detection of antibiotics based on Ag NPs/CNT-GO offers great potential for practical applications in environmental analysis.

Preparation and properties of PVDF/SiO2@GO nanohybrid membranes via thermally induced phase separation method

Zhong-Kun Li,Wan-Zhong Lang,Wei Miao,Xi Yan,Ya-Jun Guo

Graphene oxide (GO), one of the most promising filter materials, is intensively employed to prepare the membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS) method, but it has not been found to modify polymeric membranes via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. In this work, the derivative of GO, SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid , is fabricated and employed to synthesize PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membranes via TIPS method for the first time. The results indicate that the PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membranes experience liquid-liquid phase separation mechanism, and exhibit bi-continual and asymmetric structure. The included SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid is uniformly dispersed in the membrane matrix. With the addition of SiO 2 @GO, the top surface becomes denser and the pore size decreases; but overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition for membrane M-5 triggers in the adverse trend. This is caused by the combined actions of nucleation and growth of PVDF and viscosity increase of cast solution due to the addition SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid. The BSA rejection of membrane gradually increases with the addition of PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid accompanied with the decline of pure water permeation flux. As the SiO 2 @GO content increases to 0.9   wt%, the PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membrane M-4 presents the highest BSA rejection of 91.7% and the lowest permeation flux of 182.6   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 . However, the overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition (1.2   wt%) leads to the outstanding pure water permeation flux of 679.1   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 and a much lower BSA rejection. The addition of PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid evidently improves the surface hydrophilicity and antifouling ability of resultant membranes. The XRD patterns and FTIR spectra of membranes verify the exclusive α-phase of PVDF, and the melting temperature( T m ) and crystallinity( x c ) evidently increase with the addition of SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid up to 0.9   wt% in the dopes. Overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition (1.2   wt%) leads to small decline for these parameters.
