In this work, SiO2 microspheres were first prepared by a conventional Stöber method and then etched by NaOH solution to obtain porous ones. By tuning the degree of etching, specific surface area of SiO2 microspheres could be controlled. Then, small fluorescent molecules are synthesized and incorporated onto the surface and/or pores of the SiO2 via layer-by-layer reaction to obtain fluorescent microspheres, namely, SiO2–NH2–BODIPY (SiNBB), SiO2–NH2–BODIPY–indole–benzothiazole (SiNBIT), and SiO2–NH2–BODIPY–indole–benzoxazole (SiNBIO). The as-prepared microspheres SiNBB exhibit highly sensitive and selective recognition ability for Hg2+ and Pb2+. When SiNBB encounters Hg2+ and Pb2+, the fluorescence intensity of SiNBB is increased up to fivefold. SiNBIT and SiNBIO are solely sensitive to Hg2+, and both have a single high sensitivity to recognize Hg2+. The adsorption efficiency of Hg2+ by the three fluorescent microspheres SiNBB, SiNBIT, and SiNBIO reached 2.91, 0.99, and 0.98 g/g of microspheres, respectively. Experimental results of A549 cells and zebrafish indicate that the fluorescent microspheres are permeable to cell membranes and organisms. The distribution of Hg2+ in the brain of zebrafish was obtained by the fluorescence confocal imaging technique, and Hg2+ was successfully detected in A549 cells and zebrafish.

In this present work, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were prepared from thiomalic acid as the carbon and sulfur source and NSCDs were used conveniently and sensitively to monitor Hg 2+ and glutathione , regarding as a switching mode (turn-on-off) fluorescent sensing probe. The constructed NSCDs were characterized with their morphology and surface functional groups by TEM, XPS and XRD . The average particle size of the as-synthesized NSCDs is 4.4 nm. The fluorescence of NSCDs was efficiently quenched by Hg 2+ with excitation and emission wavelength at 380/568 nm, respectively. The sensitive detection method of Hg 2+ was established in 0.00–32.0 μM concentration range. The quenched fluorescence of [email protected] 2+ could be recovered after adding GSH. As a result, the concentration of GSH at 0.50–34.0 μM could linearly relate to the change in fluorescence of [email protected] 2+ . The Hg 2+ and GSH in human urine and serum samples were detected with the recoveries of 98.5%–104.5 and 98.5–103.5%, respectively. Owing to NSCDs favorable biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, they were successfully applied to detect Hg 2+ and GSH in HepG2 cells, indicating that NSCDs have potential applications in biology.

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are new porous crystalline materials owning outstanding stability, adsorbability and hypotoxicity. The assembly of fluorescence probes into porous COF provides a good method for ratiometric fluorescence detection avoiding the toxic effects of fluorescence probes to the samples. Herein, a two-dimensional COF (TAPT-DHTA-COF) was employed as a host to encapsulate N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) (NCDs-RhB@COF). NCDs and RhB were uniformly assembled into the pores of TAPT-DHTA- COF based on the hydrogen bond . The as-prepared NCDs-RhB@COF nanocomposites exhibited blue emission of NCDs at 440 nm and red emission of RhB at 570 nm at excitation of 340 nm. After the addition of Hg 2+ , the blue emission became weaker while the red emission was enhanced due to the strong coordination between NCDs-RhB@COF and Hg 2+ . This “on-off” fluorescence probe was applied in detection of trace Hg 2+ with linear range of 0.048–10 μM and detection limit of 15.9 nM together with appropriate selectivity, acceptable sensitivity and stability. The work shreds some light for COF as platform to construct ratiometric fluorescent sensor for industrial and biological application.

Tartrazine preferred in food and textile industries, but excessive consumption threats human health. Due to toxicity, non-biodegradability, and trace accumulation in the food chains, Hg 2+ has attracted people's attention. Thus, it is important to detect tartrazine and Hg 2+ with sensitivity way. Using VB 2 and citrate as precursors, yellow-green fluorescent carbon dots were prepared by hydrothermal method . The N-CDs were purified by dialysis, thin layer chromatography and chromatographic column. Excellent linear ranges of 0.25–5 μM and 5–50 μM of tartrazine were obtained with low detection limits 34.98 nM, while good linear ranges of 0.25–5 μM and 10–50 μM of Hg 2+ with low detection limits 29.64 nM, respectively. In addition, the quenching mechanisms of targets to the fluorescent of N-CDs were illuminated. Furthermore, the nanoprobe was efficiently applied to determine the content of tartrazine in carbonated drink, fruit jelly and sugar samples, and Hg 2+ in tap water, lake water, and river water samples. It showed great potential to detect tartrazine and Hg 2+ .

Abstract As a highly hazardous heavy metal, mercury ion (Hg2+) poses a serious threat to human health through the intake of polluted aquatic products and water. Accordingly, the development of a simple, sensitive, and efficient method for Hg2+ detection is of significant importance. Herein, a novel silver nanoparticle (Qu-CD-AgNPs) was successfully synthesized using an inclusion complex of Qu and β-cyclodextrin, which forms an Ag–Hg alloy upon interaction with Hg2+, markedly enhancing its oxidase-like activity to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), generating a Hg2+ concentration-dependent color change. On this basis, a colorimetric detection platform for Hg2+ was fabricated by integrating the hydrogel-based Qu-CD-AgNPs + TMB system and a self-developed RGB-values-analysis app for portable equipment. Under the optimized conditions, the platform shows a linear range between 3 and 100 μM and a detection limit as low as 0.023 μM, as well as excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance. This work promises a broad application prospect in water-quality monitoring and the inspection of aquatic products.

Dendritic fiber nanosilica (DFNS) possesses a unique porous structure, and its potential application for adsorption and separation, particularly of heavy metals, should be explored. This study, to our knowledge, is the first time to introduce fluorescence recognition ability to DFNS and to combine it with polymer materials. Firstly, the fluorescent DFNS (FL-DFNS) was prepared by a Schiff base formation reaction between the naphthalamide fluorophore and the modified DFNS. Then, a two-step approach was employed to fabricate FL-DFNS/polyurethane (FL-DFNS/CSPU-02) nanocomposite materials. FL-DFNS functions as a “turn off” sensor for Hg 2+ /Hg + ions, exhibiting fluorescence quenching of up to 81.1 %/75.9 %. It also has an excellent adsorption capacity to mercury. Specifically, FL-DFNS/CSPU-02 membrane enabled portable detection of Hg 2+ /Hg + ions. Importantly, it exhibited superior performance in the adsorption and separation of Hg 2+ /Hg + ions, achieving a removal efficiency of 97.7 % and 98.0 %, with an absorption capacity of 382.4/373.5 µg/cm 2 . And it can be recycled for at least nine times. Overall, this study confirms the practical application value of FL-DFNS and FL-DFNS/CSPU-02 membrane in the recognition and removal of Hg 2+ /Hg + ions, it will achieve the real application in environmental science and engineering.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are characterised by high porosity levels and controllable structures, making them ideal adsorbents for wastewater. However, obtaining substrate materials with mechanical stability, excellent pore accessibility, and good processability for compositing MOF crystal powders to adsorb multiple pollutants in complex aqueous environments is challenging. In this study, porous MOFs@ modified cellulose sponge (MCS) composites were fabricated using MCS as a scaffold to provide anchoring sites for the coordination of Zr 4+ ions and further in situ synthesis of MOFs, namely UiO-66@MCS and UiO-66-NH 2 @MCS, which effectively removed heavy metal ions and organic dyes. MOFs@MCS composites exhibit excellent water and dimensional stability, maintaining the pore structure by ambient drying during reuse. Compared with UiO-66@MCS composite, UiO-66-NH 2 @MCS composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of 224.5 mg·g −1 for Hg 2+ and 400.9 mg·g −1 for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption of Hg 2+ onto the MOFs@MCS composites followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, whereas the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models were more suitable for MB adsorption. Moreover, the MOFs@MCS composites exhibited excellent reusability and were selective for the removal of Hg 2+ . Overall, this approach effectively combines Zr-based MOFs with mechanically and dimensionally stable porous cellulose sponges, rendering the approach suitable for purifying complex wastewater.

In this research, folic acid functionalized silver nanoparticles (FA-AgNPs) were selected as a colorimetric and a 'turn on' fluorescent sensor for detecting Hg2+. After being added into Hg2+, AgNPs can emit stable fluorescence at 440 nm when the excitation wavelength is selected at 275 nm. The absorbance and fluorescence of the FA-AgNPs could reflect the concentration of the Hg2+ ions. Thus, we developed a simple, sensitive analytical method to detect Hg2+ based on the colorimetric and fluorescence enhancement of FA-AgNPs. The sensor exhibits two linear response ranges between absorbance and fluorescence intensity with Hg2+ concentration, respectively. Meanwhile, a detection limit of 1 nM is estimated based on the linear relationship between responses with a concentration of Hg2+. The high specificity of Hg2+ with FA-AgNPs interactions provided the excellent selectivity towards detecting Hg2+ over other metal ions (Pb2+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Ba2+, Cr6+ and Cr3+). This will provide a simple, effective and multifunctional colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for on-site and real-time Hg2+ ion detection. The proposed method can be applied to the analysis of trace Hg2+ in lake water. Additionally, the FA-AgNPs can be used as efficient catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III).

In this work, cerium-doped carbon dots (Ce-CDs) both as a reducing agent and template hybrid gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with weak oxidase-like (OXD) activity was synthesized for the detection of Hg 2+ and aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ). The AuNPs can catalyze efficiently mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) reduction to the metallic (Hg 0 ) to form Au-Hg amalgam (Au@HgNPs). The obtained Au@HgNPs with strong OXD-like activity oxidize without Raman-active leucomalachite green (LMG) into the Raman-active malachite green (MG) and simultaneously as the SERS substrates by the formed Raman “hot spot” through MG-induced Au@HgNPs aggregation. While AFB 1 was introduced resulting in the SERS intensity decreasing due to Hg 2+ with AFB 1 via carbonyl group to inhibit the aggregation of Au@HgNPs. The work paves a new path for the design of a nanozyme-based SERS protocol for tracing Hg 2+ and AFB 1 residues in foodstuff analysis.

At present, few genetically encoded fluorescent probes are currently available for the analysis of toxic heavy metal ions , and most have poor performance that cannot meet the requirements of sensitive and dynamic detection in living cells. In this study, we designed a single fluorescent protein-based probe sfGFP-MerBD, which can specifically response to Hg 2+ with high binding affinity and wide dynamic range. More importantly, the developing probe can timely and reversibly monitor changes of Hg 2+ concentration in living mammalian cells . The excellent performance of this probe is largely due to the recognition element of the probe, MerBD, which adopts an unusual planar trigonometric coordination configuration with Hg 2+ , and the coordination can cause enough conformational change to influence the fluorescence of skeleton protein sfGFP coupled with it. The small peptide MerBD was delicately designed based on the three-dimensional structure of metalloprotein MerR. This novel design strategy solves the challenging problems that there are few natural functional proteins in the process of constructing fluorescent probes for toxic metal ions and some functional proteins cannot be directly used as recognition elements. Based on the new strategy, more genetically encoded fluorescent probes of toxic heavy metal ions can be efficiently constructed and applied in the future.

Mercury is one of the most potentially toxic metals, which is much harmful to the human health. Therefore, It is great important to detect mercury ions . In this work, proposed was a simply visual and rapidly colorimetric strategy for detection of Hg 2+ based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with sulfadiazine (SDZ) and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV–vis. The solution color from red to blue gray with increasing Hg 2+ concentration resulted from the aggregation of AuNPs with fine anti-interference. The limit of detection (LOD) is 1.0 μg·mL -1 by the naked eye, and 0.071 μg·mL -1 by UV–vis spectroscopy with the good linear relationship (R 2 = 0.994) indicating that AuNPs modified with sulfadiazine could be used for the quantitative determination of Hg 2+ . The selectivity of SDZ-AuNPs detection system for Hg 2+ is much more excellent compared with other interferents in cosmetics, which exhibit this sensor could be successfully applied to detect Hg 2+ in real samples.
