A Model to Stabilize CO2 Uptake Capacity during Carbonation–Calcination Cycles and its Case of CaO–MgO

Qiancheng Zhu,Shibi Zeng,Ying Yu

Nowadays, capturing anthropogenic CO2 in a highly efficient and cost-effective way is one of the most challenging issues. Herein, the key parameters to stabilize CO2 uptake capacity have been studied based on four kinds of pure calcium oxides (CaO) prepared by a simple calcination method with four different calcium precursors. A simple ideal particle model was proposed to illustrate the uniform distribution of pure CaO, in which the CO2 uptake capacity is positively related with surface area of CaO particles and the stability is opposite to the distance between two CaO particles after carbonation. The adsorption capacity of the best sample with a distance of 398 nm between two CaO particles after carbonation only lost 0.344% per cycle, which is originated from the low possibility of the agglomeration between neighboring particles. On the basis of the proposed model, the composite with magnesium oxide (MgO) distributed uniformly in CaO was fabricated by a simple ball milling method, which possessed an excellent stability with a decay rate of only 3.9% over 100 carbonation–calcination cycles. In this case, MgO played as inert to increase the distance between CaO particles for agglomeration prevention.

Enhanced Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol to Phenol over MgO-Supported Pt Catalysts: The Critical Role of Sodium Promotion

Xin Han,Shanguang Xu,Fan Zhang,Ruiying Chai,Shanguo Du,Xiuling Jiao,Dairong Chen,Jie Zhang

The modulation of catalyst surfaces with alkali metals is a key research topic in heterogeneous catalysis. This study elucidates the mechanistic role of sodium promotion in enhancing the performance of MgO-supported Pt catalysts for the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol to phenol. The catalytic activity exhibited a distinct volcano-shaped trend as a function of sodium content, with optimal performance achieved using the Pt-5Na/MgO catalyst. Under the conditions of 280 °C and 0.1 MPa H2 pressure, the Pt-5Na/MgO catalyst achieved 98% conversion and 91% phenol selectivity. Mechanistic studies revealed that sodium modification increased the basicity of the support, and a correlation was observed between guaiacol conversion and the density of surface basic sites. Additionally, sodium addition induced electronic restructuring of the catalyst by transferring electrons from Na to Pt, which increased the electron density of Pt nanoparticles, facilitated the reduction of Pt, and generated more catalytically active Pt species. This electronic modification enhanced the hydrogen activation capacity of Pt species, while the stabilization of hydrogen species on basic sites enhanced hydrogen spillover efficiency, thereby increasing the availability of reactive hydrogen species. The findings provide insight into the design of alkali-metal-promoted Pt catalysts for hydrogenation applications.

Cataluminescence sensor based on MgO/UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposite for rapid detection of isopropanol in exhaled breath

Zhaoxia Shi,Zhen Luo,Yilu Liu,Yintang Zhang,Yanli Zhou,Maotian Xu

A synergistic MgO@UiO-66-NH₂ nanocomposite was prepared for CTL sensing. • The proposed CTL sensor enables rapid, non-invasive detection of isopropanol. • The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (0.04–120 mg/L) and good stability. • This method offers a potential approach for preclinical lung cancer screening via exhaled breath analysis. Isopropanol (IPA) has been identified as a potential biomarker for lung cancer, and the rapid detection of IPA in exhaled breath may offer a promising strategy for lung cancer screening. In this study, rod-like MgO, MnO₂, and ZnO, along with natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), were synthesized and used as carriers to fabricate nanocomposites with a Zr-based metal–organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂). Their catalytic activities toward IPA were evaluated using cataluminescence (CTL) measurements. MgO@UiO-66-NH₂ exhibited the highest catalytic activity, attributed to the synergistic effect between MgO and UiO-66-NH₂ enhancing the redox capacity in the presence of ozone. Based on this composite, a rapid CTL method was developed for IPA detection in exhaled breath. The intra-sensor precision (nine repeated measurements on the same sensor) gave a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.41%; inter-sensor reproducibility (seven different sensors) gave an RSD of 3.81%; and long-term stability over seven weeks showed an RSD of 4.3%. The linear range was 0.04–120 mg/L, with a limit of detection of 0.015 mg/L (S/N = 3). When applied to three healthy human exhaled breath samples, the method achieved spiked recoveries ranging from 90.0% to 105.3%. These results demonstrate that the proposed CTL sensor enables rapid, non-invasive detection of IPA and holds great potential for IPA detection in exhaled breath. Ethanol Upgrading to Jet Fuel Precursors over Ni/MgO@C Catalysts Derived from Bimetallic Metal–Organic Frameworks

Boya Hao,Gang Hou,Zewei Liu,Zeyuan Lei,Chongyi Wang,Bofeng Zhang,RongRong Zhang,Xingjie Wang,Jiafei Lyu,Guozhu Liu

The growing demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) makes extending the carbon chain from ethanol a strategy well worth pursuing. Herein, a series of Ni/MgO@C catalysts derived from Ni/Mg bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was evaluated for the Guerbet coupling of ethanol to higher alcohols within the alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) strategy. Owing to the isolated metal nodes in the periodic framework, highly dispersed Ni species on the magnesium-based solid supports with abundant basic sites have been accessed. The catalyst with a Ni/Mg molar ratio of 0.13 achieved a higher alcohol yield of 55.5% at 88.4% ethanol conversion under 2 MPa N2 at 240 °C for 10 h. Upon extending the reaction to 24 h, C8–C16+ alcohols accounted for 41.4% of the alcohol product pool. Comprehensive catalyst characterization combined with theoretical calculations revealed that the involvement of Ni species can accelerate the dehydrogenation step, while an appropriate Niδ+/Ni0 ratio can be critical for efficient carbon chain elongation by promoting alcohol dehydrogenation to aldehyde and simultaneously suppressing their deep decomposition through weakened interaction with the catalyst surface.

Enhancing thermal conductivity of epoxy composites via f-BN@f-MgO hybrid fillers assisted by hot pressing

Xudong Wu,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Xingguang Meng,Zhikun Huang,Xiaowei Liu,Xiaodan Gong,Jinyi Liu

High thermal conductive polymeric composites are extremely desired for the thermal management of electronic devices due to the rapid development of the modern microelectronic industry. Herein, the functionalized boron nitride (BN) and magnesium oxide (MgO) hybrid fillers (f-BN@f-MgO) were synthesized and used to prepare the enhanced thermal conductive epoxy (EP) composites through the hot-pressing method. The results demonstrated that the covalent binding of BN and MgO in the hybrid fillers reduced the interface thermal resistance effectively between fillers and matrix and the hot-pressing induced force facilitated the construction of the continuous thermal conduction paths. Consequently, the as-prepared epoxy composite at 40 wt% hybrid fillers loading had high thermal conductivity (TC) (1.97 W/[m·K]), outstanding insulating performance (6.9 × 10 15 Ω cm) and excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, a probable thermal conduction mechanism was proposed to illustrate the high TC of the epoxy composite. Therefore, this study provides a new approach to preparing epoxy composites with outstanding performances.

Improving immobilization efficiency and mechanism analysis of sodium hexametaphosphate on MgO-based cementitious material solidified MSWI FA

Duan Yin,Zheng Lin,Zhao Yimeng,Long Ling,Liu Xiaobo,Jiang Xuguang

MgO-based cementitious material (MCM) is a potential green substitute for solidifying municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA). Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), a commonly used dispersant, has a great influence on the hydration process of MCM-MSWI FA blends. In this study, the effect of different SHMP additions on the performance of the MCM-MSWI FA (3:7 in mass ratio) blends was investigated. The compressive strength and leaching toxicity of the blends were measured, and the structural evolution was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TG/DTG, and SEM. These tests revealed that the addition of SHMP could significantly optimize the effect of MCM solidifying MSWI FA since SHMP could promote the dispersion of hydration products in the blends. The blends containing more than 1% SHMP exhibited immobilization efficiencies higher than 97.5% for heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Zn) after curing for 28 days. Collectively, this work demonstrates the indispensable role of SHMP in the application of MCM solidifying MSWI FA, providing theoretical support for practical engineering.

Effect of yttria substitution on structure, optical and mechanical properties of (Gd, Y)2O3–MgO nanocomposite ceramics

Kaichen Qian,Jiantai Fan,Zongyun Shen,Lulu Zhang,Xianglong Fan,Tao Feng,Weiwen Zhou,Minghui Feng,Benxue Jiang,Long Zhang

A citrate-nitrate combustion method was applied to synthesize fine composite Gd 2-x Y x O 3 -MgO (x = 0, 0.02, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6) nanopowders . Y 2 O 3 substitution inhibited Gd 2 O 3 phase transition from cubic structure to monoclinic structure during sintering, thereby stabilizing its cubic structure to room temperature. This approach led to nanocomposite ceramics with a grain size of about 190 nm and increased the transmittance to 85% over the 3–5 μm wavelength range when x = 0.3. However, the addition of Y 2 O 3 weakened the mechanic properties of the nanocomposite ceramics.

Potato starch films by incorporating tea polyphenol and MgO nanoparticles with enhanced physical, functional and preserved properties

Dan Luo,Qiang Xie,Shimin Gu,Wentong Xue

Due to the massive environmental pollution caused by synthetic plastic packaging accumulation and contemporary necessities of food packaging materials, the biodegradable and multifunctional bionanocomposite films based on potato starch (PS) incorporating tea polyphenol (TP) and MgO nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were successfully fabricated by the solution casting method, and their physical and functional properties and application in fruits preservation were systematically investigated. Incorporation of TP and MgO-NPs improved the films' tensile strength, UV light-blocking, hydrophobicity and thermal stability, and decreased their moisture content (from 14.02 % to 11.21 %), water solubility (from 19.57 % to 16.56 %), and water vapor permeability (from 17.32 to 9.07 × 10 −11  g∙m −1 ∙s −1 ∙Pa −1 ). Moreover, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs films exhibited strong antioxidant activity, and remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the diameter of inhibition zone of 25.60 mm and 27.50 mm, respectively. SEM, ATR-FTIR and XRD analyses indicated the TP and MgO-NPs were dispersed homogeneously in the PS matrix, and identified the molecular interactions of hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic attraction. Biodegradability assessment showed that all the films were rapidly decomposed within ~20 days under simulated environmental conditions. Compared to control, the PS/TP/MgO-NPs film-forming solution coatings were capable of maintaining fruit quality by reducing the change in weight loss, firmness and total soluble solids. Overall, these results suggested that the multifunctional bionanocomposite films could be a potential approach for developing sustainable active food packaging.

(AlCrMg)x(PO4)y/MgO composite: A new thermal protection and insulation material up to 2400 °C

Zizhang Zhan,Wei Sun,Shuaishuai Zhang,Qingbo Wen,Hongbo Zhang,Xiang Xiong

A (AlCrMg) x (PO 4 ) y /MgO composite(APMC) was prepared based on the acid–base reaction between MgO and chromium aluminum phosphate solution for thermal protection and insulation applications at ultrahigh-temperatures up to 2400 °C. The compositions, formation mechanisms, microstructure, mechanical properties , thermal conductivity and ablation resistance of the composite were systematically investigated. The results show that the (AlCrMg) x (PO 4 ) y /MgO composite can be consolidated in different shapes at room temperature. The compressive strength of the as-prepared porous composites is higher than 20 MPa due to the macromolecular network structure, and it can be further improved to 42 MPa via thermal treatment. After ablation by an oxyacetylene flame at 2400 ± 70 °C for 60 s, the mass and line ablation rates of the composite were 0.0195 g/s and 0.43 × 10 −3  mm/s, respectively, which are comparable to those of ultrahigh-temperature ceramics. The excellent ablation resistance can be attributed to the in situ formation of a dense protective layer composed of spinel MgCr 2 O 4 and MgO phases. Interestingly, during ablation at 2400 °C the back-side temperature of the 15 mm-thick sample was lower than 130 °C, suggesting outstanding thermal insulation performance. The temperature gradient leads to the formation of a gradated porous structure which reduces the overall thermal conductivity of the composite.

Preliminary assessment of the efficacy of nano–MgO–based dispersion for the consolidation of artificial weathered sandstone

Lina Xie,Xue-Qiang Chen,Bingjian Zhang,Yulan Hu

The consolidation of weathered sandstone has been an important subject in cultural heritage conservation. Due to the loss of cementing materials, the structure of sandstone becomes loose, thus mechanical strength decreases dramatically. To restore cohesion between sand grains, a novel nano-MgO-based consolidant (MMH dispersion) is studied. In this paper, the MMH dispersions with different concentrations and number of applications are applied on artificial weathered sandstone specimen with trickling infiltration treatment to select the optimal consolidation method. The consolidation products that formed in the pores between sand grains are characterized through XRD analysis and SEM observation. The effectiveness of consolidation treatment is evaluated in terms of mechanical properties (i.e., compressive strength and surface hardness) and compatibility (i.e., color variation and capillary water absorption). Due to the formation of 5 Mg(OH) 2 ·MgCl 2 ·8H 2 O, sand grains are more effectively bonded. Therefore, the treated specimens experience a significant improvement in mechanical strength. Finally, the specimens are subjected to a salt crystallization test, the results of which show that the MMH consolidant increased the durability of the specimens. After treatment, the intermediate concentration of MMH consolidant with five applications reveals the best potential to act as a promising consolidation method for the conservation of the weathered sandstone.

Efficient and stable removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions by hollow microspheres of MgO/ZrO2 composite oxide

Fulong Cheng,Fangui Nie,Changxin Zhao,Wei Li,Jie Pan

Excessive phosphorus is regarded as one of the main causes of eutrophication, destroying the balance of the original ecosystem of water bodies and endangering human health. In this study, a novel MgO/ZrO 2 composite oxide with a hollow structure (MgZr-CS) was prepared by a simple carbon template method, and served as an adsorbent for the efficient uptake of phosphate from aqueous solutions. For comparison, MgO/ZrO 2 bimetal oxide (MgZr) was also prepared by the conventional co-precipitation method. The effects of pH and coexisting anions on the adsorption of phosphate were studied. The adsorption performance of materials was described by the adsorption kinetic model and isothermal model. The adsorption capability of both MgZr-CS and MgZr was negligibly affected by coexisting ions (e.g., Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − and SO 4 2− ) in water. The adsorption kinetic of both MgZr-CS and MgZr was better correlated with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model , while the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model. However, the Langmuir maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of MgZr-CS was 149.3 mg/g at initial pH of 7, which was about twice that of MgZr. Remarkably, different from MgZr that only presented well phosphate adsorption performance under the acidic environment, MgZr-CS could maintain the excellent adsorption performance within a particularly wide pH range of 3–11. Compared to adsorbents reported in previous papers, MgZr-CS also exhibited larger adsorption capacity and higher pH stability. Moreover, MgZr-CS performed prominent in the treatment of actual domestic sewage, and its phosphate removal rate could reach 99.3%. The adsorption mechanism analysis revealed that the excellent phosphate performance of MgZr-CS was mainly due to the existence of oxygen vacancies providing more active adsorption sites. Results shown here indicated that MgZr-CS can be used as a potential adsorbent for phosphate.

Fast densification mechanism of highly transparent AlON ceramics pressureless sintered by co-doping Y2O3 and MgO additives

Yingchun Shan,Cun Wei,Liya Ma,Haoran Guo,Xiaoguang Han,Jiangtao Li,Jiujun Xu

By co-doping 0.15 wt% Y 2 O 3 and 0.60 wt% MgO , AlON ceramics with high transmittance in visible and infrared range (the maximum transmittance of 81.8%@3600 nm, 78.1%@400 nm) were successfully fast fabricated via pressureless sintering at 1880 °C for 2.5 h. The phase assemblage, microstructure and densification process of samples doped (Y 2 O 3 /MgO single- and co-doped) and undoped additives during heating were monitored to explore the densification mechanism. MgO was found to be an exceptional inhibitor for both AlON decomposition and grain growth. By incorporating MgO as one constituent of additives, the content of α-Al 2 O 3 that decomposed from AlON in samples during heating was significantly reduced and Mg 2+ illustrated inhibition to grain boundary migration, resulting in particle aggregation/coarsening were effectively suppressed at ≤ 1600 °C. Based on the obtained microstructure with compacted small particles and negligible particle aggregation/coarsening at early stage of sintering, facilitated by the acceleration of Y 3+ on mass transfer, rapid densification of AlON was achieved.
