Mn-Doped NaNbO3/Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 Lead-Free Ferroelectric Ceramics with Enhanced Energy Storage Performance

Yangyang Zhang,Hui Li,Erping Wang,Jingxia Gao,Liqin Yue,Miao Zhao,Ling Zhang

NaNbO3-based ferroelectric composites are regarded as a highly promising typical energy storage material. In this work, 0.02xMnO2−(1−x)NaNbO3−xBi0.5Na0.5TiO3composites were prepared by the solid-state sintering method and their microstructure, energy storage performance, and temperature stability were analyzed. As observed by the SEM images, the addition of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3to NaNbO3in appropriate amounts can effectively suppress grain growth, which is beneficial for improving the breakdown field strength. Whenx= 0.3, an optimal value of 210 kV/cm is achieved. Meanwhile, as 2θ = 33.2°, the most intense XRD peak can be observed, indicating excellent solid solubility between the phase components. Consequently, 0.006MnO2–0.7NaNbO3–0.3Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3composites demonstrated an impressive discharging storage density of 2.464 J/cm3and a considerable energy storage efficiency of 85.8%. In addition, within the temperature range of 30–80 °C, the fluctuation in energy storage density remains below 10%. All the above performances indicate that this type of material exhibits excellent practicality in the field of pulse power supply.

Mn-functionalized ZIF-67 for Sensitive Colorimetric Detection of Artemisinin and Ascorbic Acid

Xinyi Wang,Zihan Cheng,Yuting Liu,Li Wang,Lili Chen

Graphical In the study, Mn-functionalized ZIF-67 (Mn@ZIF-67) hybrid material was synthesized using a post-synthesis modification method. Its oxidase-like catalytic activity effect enabled this material to directly oxidize colorless TMB into blue oxTMB without the presence of H 2 O 2 . This color change provided a means for the detection of Art and AA. The work also demonstrated the practical application of this method in analyzing real samples containing AA or Art. Artemisinin (Art) is the first-choice medicine for treating malaria. It also shows good therapeutic effects in antibacterial and antitumor treatment. Therefore, a simple and efficient method for detecting Art is of great significance. Mn-functionalized ZIF-67 (Mn@ZIF-67) hybrid materials were synthesized using a post-synthesis modification method. Due to the introduction of Mn 2+ , Mn@ZIF-67 possesses higher peroxidase/oxidase like dual-mimic enzymes activity than ZIF-67, which can catalyze Art and generate peroxyl radicals. Based on this fact, Mn@ZIF-67 was used to detect Art in the presence of TMB. A good linear relationship between absorption intensities at 652 nm and Art concentrations was obtained in the range of 0–22 μM with a detection limit of 200 nM. Ascorbic acid (AA), due to its reducibility, can inhibit peroxidase/oxidase mimetics activity of Mn@ZIF-67 and the blue Mn@ZIF-67-TMB solution fades gradually with the addition of AA. Mn@ZIF-67-TMB acting as a colorimetric sensor, AA can be sensitively detected ranging from 0–30 μM, and the detection limit is 50 nM. Coexisting substances don't interfere with the detection of Art or AA. This sensing platform provides a highly sensitive and selective colorimetric method for monitoring AA and Art in serum, thereby demonstrating remarkable practicality.

Pseudo-Bonding and Electric-Field Harmony for Li-Rich Mn-Based Oxide Cathode

Jun Chen,Guoqiang Zou,Wentao Deng,Zhaodong Huang,Xu Gao,Cheng Liu,Shouyi Yin,Huanqing Liu,Xinglan Deng,Ye Tian,Jiayang Li,Chiwei Wang,Di Wang,Hanwen Wu,Li Yang,Hongshuai Hou,Xiaobo Ji

The practical application of Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathode is predominately retarded by the capacity decline and voltage fading, associated with the structure distortion and anionic redox reactions. Here, a linkage-functionalized modification approach to tackle these challenges via a synchronous lithium oxidation strategy is reported. The doping of Ce in the bulk phase activates the pseudo-bonding effect, effectively stabilizing the lattice oxygen evolution and suppressing the structure distortion. Interestingly, it also induces the formation of spinel phase Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 in the subsurface, which in turn constructs the phase boundaries, thereby arousing the interior self-built-in electric field to prevent the outward migration of bulk oxygen anions and boost the charge transfer. Moreover, the formed coating layer Li 2 CeO 3 with oxygen vacancies accelerates Li + diffusion and mitigates electrolyte cauterization. The corresponding cathode exhibits superior long-cycle stability after 300 cycles with only a 0.013% capacity drop and 1.76 mV voltage decay per cycle. This work sheds new light on the development of Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathodes toward high energy density applications.

Enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by Fe–Mn binary oxide synergetic mediated radical reactions

Wu Kang,Si Xiongyuan,Jiang Jin,Si Youbin,Sun Kai,Yousaf Amina

In this study, a novel Fe–Mn binary oxide (FMBO), which combined the oxidation capability of iron and manganese oxides, was constructed to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) effectively using the simultaneous co-precipitation and oxidation methods, and the reaction products were probed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Particularly, FMBO-mediated transformation mechanisms of SMX were explored using radical scavengers and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Results indicated that the best removal efficiency was obtained at a pH of 4.0, with the H 2 O 2 of 6.0 mmol/L and the FMBO dosage of 2.0 g/L, giving 97.6% removal of 10 mg/L SMX within 60 min. More importantly, we found that the hydroxyl (•OH) radicals generated by FMBO through Fenton-like reaction were responsible for the SMX oxidation. EPR studies were confirmed that the peak intensities of hydroxyl adduct decreased remarkably with increasing pH values. Moreover, the four SMX degradation intermediate products were detected by LC/MS and a reaction pathway for the possible mineralization of SMX, with •OH radicals as the main oxidant, was proposed. These findings provide a novel insight into the removal of SMX by FMBO-mediated radical reactions in aquatic environments. Moreover, this research suggested that FMBO can act as an efficient catalyst to remove SMX in hospital wastewater.

The Formation and Stability of HA–Fe/Mn Colloids in Saturated Porous Media

Junhao Zheng,Mei Jiang,Qingzhu Li,Weichun Yang

Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides are metallic compounds that exhibit significant redox activity in environmental media and play a pivotal role in geochemical processes, thereby influencing the fate of metals in porous media. The morphology of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides in natural environments and their interactions with trace metals are significantly influenced by the presence of natural organic matter (NOM). However, there is limited understanding regarding the formation, transport, and stability of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides in the environment. The present study employed humic acid (HA) as a representative NOM material to investigate the positive influence of HA on the formation of Fe/Mn colloids. However, there remains limited comprehension regarding the formation, transport, and stability of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides in the natural environment. In this study, we investigated the positive effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on the formation of Fe/Mn colloids using humic acid (HA) as a representative NOM material. We comprehensively characterized the chemical and physical properties of HA–Fe/Mn colloids formed under various environmentally relevant conditions and quantitatively analyzed their subsequent aggregation and stability behaviors. The findings suggest that the molar ratios of C to Fe/Mn (hydr)oxide play a pivotal role in influencing the properties of HA–Fe/Mn colloids. The formation and stability of HA–Fe/Mn colloids exhibit an upward trend with increasing initial molar ratios of C to Fe/Mn. Redox and metal–carboxylic acid complexation reactions between HA and hydrated iron/manganese oxides play a pivotal role in forming colloidal HA–Fe/Mn complexes. Subsequent investigations simulating porous media environments have demonstrated that the colloidal structure resulting from the interaction between HA and Fe/Mn facilitates their migration within surrounding porous media while also enhancing their retention in the surface layers of these media. This study offers novel insights into the formation and stabilization mechanisms of HA–Fe/Mn colloids, which are pivotal for comprehending the behavior of Fe/Mn colloids and the involvement of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides in geochemical cycling processes within porous media.

Doping Effect in Mn MOF-74 Induced Enhanced Urea Oxidation Assisted Hydrogen Production

Kang Wang,Chao Fan,Ruihang Hu,Chen Sun,Yan-Qin Wang

During conventional water electrolysis for hydrogen production, the high theoretical potential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) leads to excessive energy consumption. In contrast, the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with its significantly lower theoretical potential, has attracted considerable attention as an energy-efficient alternative for hydrogen production. In this study, we develop a Ni-doped Mn MOF-74 catalyst Ni-Mn MOF-74 supported on carbon cloth (CC), exhibiting a unique bud-like architecture featuring a petal-surrounded pistil morphology, which exhibits excellent UOR performance in alkaline medium. This catalyst achieves a current density of 100 mA cm-2 at an ultralow potential of 1.40 V (vs. RHE) in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M urea electrolyte while maintaining remarkable stability. Importantly, in a urea-assisted hydrogen production electrolyzer composed of Ni-Mn MOF-74 (anode) and Pt/C (cathode), the system delivers a current density of 100 mA cm⁻² at a cell voltage of only 1.49 V in alkaline freshwater and 1.50 V in alkaline seawater, respectively, while remaining excellent stability. The enhanced UOR activity stems from Ni doping, which effectively modulates the catalyst's morphology and electronic structure, the synergism of Ni and Mn strengthening the adsorption of urea molecule and OH- ion, thereby accelerating urea decomposition kinetics.

Mn-doped 0.7BiFeO3-0.3BaTiO3 piezoelectric ceramic sensor array for high-temperature impact monitoring

Shuangjie Xu,Huan Zheng,Chongqi Wang,Kaifeng Li,Xinyue Xu,Hongmeng Zhang,Yanda Ji,Lei Qiu,Hao Yang

Real-time impact monitoring is essential to ensure the safe service and efficient operation of the aircraft structure. By embedding the piezoelectric sensor array within the structure and applying appropriate signal processing algorithms, the impact position can be precisely localized, enabling real-time monitoring of the aircraft structure. With the development of supersonic aircraft, the fuselage skin of the aircraft is often exposed to high temperatures and other harsh environments during flight. However, the relatively low operating temperature significantly limits the application of traditional piezoelectric sensor arrays in high-temperature impact monitoring. The Mn-doped BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties and high Curie temperature ( T c ), making them promising for high-temperature impact monitoring of the supersonic aircraft. In the present work, we fabricated a sensor array based on 0.7BiFeO 3 -0.3BaTiO 3 -0.25 %molMnO 2 (73BFBT-Mn) ceramic, which demonstrates a T c of 478 °C and a piezoelectric charge constant ( d 33 ) of 125 pC/N at room temperature. Significantly, the 73BFBT-Mn ceramic sensor array maintains a good impact localization accuracy from 25 °C to 200 °C combined with the improved path imaging algorithm. This is attributed to the construction of virtual paths within the sensor array and the extraction of impact signal features, which represent the major improvement compared to traditional path imaging algorithms. The 73BFBT-Mn ceramic sensor array exhibits significant prospects for high-temperature impact monitoring, particularly in the monitoring of supersonic aircraft fuselage skins.

Synergistic removal of acetone and NOx by Ag modified Mn/HZSM-5 catalyst

Changcheng Sun,Lyumeng Ye,Peng Lu,Xianhui Yan,Jianhang Huang,Zhixiong Tang,Dongyao Chen,Chaoping Cen

The key point to broaden the operating temperature window for synergistic control of NO x and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) with high NO x /VOCs conversion and N 2 /CO 2 selectivity relies on development of appropriate catalysts. Herein, a silver-modified Mn/HZSM-5 catalyst was designed, which achieved an effective NO x and acetone co-removal activity and maintained over 90 % N 2 /CO 2 selectivity at a broad temperature range from 293 to 400 °C. The excellent performance of MnAg/HZSM-5 was due to large surface area, plenty of oxygen vacancies and Lewis acid sites, as well as outstanding oxygen mobility and reducibility that derived from the interactions between Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Ag + /Ag 0 . NO x reduction followed both Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms, while acetone hardly replaced NH 3 as a reduction agent. Acetone oxidation underwent acetone → acetate → formate → carbonate → CO 2 and H 2 O following a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. NH 3 participated in acetone oxidation, forming amide and nitrile species, which caused catalyst deactivation and secondary pollution.

Long-Range Cation Disorder Enhances Comprehensive Performance in Mn-Rich Layered Sodium Cathodes

Maolin Yang,Tingting Yang,Mingjie Dong,Zhongyuan Huang,Yuguang Pu,Lei Jin,Rui Wang,Yuxi Luo,Tao Zeng,Yonglin Tang,Jun Chen,Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski,Ziwei Chen,Yu Qiao,Yinguo Xiao

Mn-rich layered oxides (MRLOs) are promising low-cost cathode materials for sustainable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the low Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox potential limits their energy densities, and the Jahn-Teller distortion that occurs surrounding Mn 3+ at low voltages destabilizes the structure. Additionally, complex ordered structures inherently present in MRLOs hinder Na + migration. In this study, new types of cation ordering structures are discovered in common MRLOs. By regulating oxygen vacancy formation, the transition from short-range to long-range cation ordering is disrupted, effectively mitigating cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and achieving a 95.3% capacity retention over 1 000 cycles at 8 C. The maximum entropy method (MEM) analysis is performed based on neutron diffraction data, which visualizes significantly optimized Na + diffusion pathways in long-range disordered cathode with enhanced Na + diffusion kinetics. Furthermore, the formation of oxygen vacancy elevates the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox potential, resulting in a competitive energy density of 626 Wh kg −1 within 1.5–4.5 V in a half-cell configuration. This work offers a multiscale approach to precise elucidation of the cathode crystal structure and provides a feasible pathway to optimize sodium-ion cathodes by disrupting long-range cation ordering, ultimately facilitating substantial improvements in electrochemical performance.

Rapid synthesis of Mn-doped NiFe2O4 nanosheet arrays for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Kui Yan,Ruixin Chen,Qi Ling,Ziwei Zhao,Zihan Zhou,Xuan Li,Jianguo Lv,Chunbin Cao,Gang He,Zhaoqi Sun,Miao Zhang

This research presents an innovative approach to the in-situ fabrication of Mn-doped NiFe 2 O 4 (Mn-NiFe 2 O 4 ) nanosheet arrays directly on nickel foam substrates. The formation of precursors on the nickel foam substrates is achieved through spontaneous corrosion, followed by a thermal treatment to form the Mn-NiFe 2 O 4 nanosheet arrays. The material's structure and morphology were thoroughly examined, revealing that the addition of Mn transforms the nanoporous structure on the nickel foam into a nanosheet structure. The average thickness of the nanosheets is 30 nm, and their primary composition is Mn-doped NiFe 2 O 4 . The resulting highly porous structure of these nanosheets provides numerous active sites and effective electron and ion diffusion channels, thereby increasing charge density and mechanical stability. Electrochemical assays show that the areal-specific capacity of the synthesized electrode material reaches 4.34 C cm −2 (areal-specific capacitance is 8.68 F cm −2 ) at 1 mA cm −2 . Notably, the constructed hybrid supercapacitor achieves a power density of 544 µW cm −2 at an energy density of 390 µWh cm −2 . Furthermore, capacitance retention is 95.2% after 5000 charging cycles. Additionally, the assembled device delivers robust and sustained energy output for LED displays and electric toy cars. This method streamlines the production flow of electrode materials, reducing energy consumption while significantly enhancing the areal capacitance of supercapacitors. The assembled hybrid supercapacitor structure diagram and the assembled devices provide power sources for electric toy cars and LED displays.

Bimetallic Co-Mn catalyzed chemselective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid

Rui Zhu,Fang Gao,Xinglong Li

The development of efficient catalysts for the stepwise oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformyl furan (DFF), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-Formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) or 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is critical for biomass valorization. Herein, we reported a bimetallic Co-Mn catalyst anchored on nitrogen-doped porous carbon, which was used for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA, avoiding the use of high temperature and high-pressure oxygen. High FDCA selectivity (>95 %) was achieved through reaction condition optimization. And HMF→DFF→FFCA→FDCA was considered to be the main reaction pathway during the whole oxidation process. Additionally, the chemical environment of the constituent elements of the used catalyst was analyzed by XPS. TEM revealed that the catalyst retained its porous structure and excellent metal dispersion after the reaction. This structural stability was corroborated by sustained >90 % FDCA selectivity over five consecutive reaction cycles. This work established a dual-metal synergy strategy for multi-step oxidation pathways, offering insights into the design of robust catalysts for biomass-derived platform molecule upgrading.
