The (110), (040), and (021) planes of α-MoO3 are commonly observed in X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns between 2θ = 20° and 30°, exhibiting varying relative amplitudes under different synthesis techniques. Although prior studies have noted these variations, their specific impact on structural properties remains unexplored. This study investigates how the relative amplitude of the (110), (040), and (021) is modulated via the modified rapid vapor synthesis of α-MoO3 in air, influencing morphological and structural properties. XRD analysis revealed an 18-fold enhancement in the amplitude of the (040) upon annealing at 750 °C, annihilating the (110) and (021) planes. Therefore, the (110), (040), and (021) amplitude tuning characteristics can be categorized as (i) tensile strain (T ≤ 600 °C) and (ii) compressive strain (T ≥ 650 °C), driven by lattice volume expansion (oxygen loss) and lattice oxygen replenishment, respectively. Overall, elevated temperatures drive systematic exponential decay and growth in the valence band (EVB = 1.95 to 1.83 eV, 1.82–1.72 eV) and conduction band (ECB −1.15 to −1.03 eV, −1.02 to −0.92 eV), corroborating the red-shift in both the direct and indirect band gaps. MoO3@500 °C exhibited superior optical stability and sensing capability in aqueous acetone and ethanol. Upon exposure to acetone, the optical peak intensity increased and shifted from 295 to 299 nm, while ethanol quenched both absorption peaks. This work provides novel insights into crystallographic control for advanced applications and complements the existing understanding of MoO3.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) with two-dimensional (2D) “graphene-like” stacked structure has attracted widespread attention as a type of novel energy storage materials because of its unique electronic properties. However, it suffers from fast capacity fading, low cycling stability and low specific capacitance for flexible devices. This study describes a facile and novel laser irradiation approach to fabricate self-assembled porous hollow MoO 3-x -doped MoS 2 nanospheres sandwiched by graphene for binder-free flexible supercapacitors (SCs). Due to the one-step laser-induced fragmentation and self-assembly of MoS 2 nanoflakes with the photothermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO), the MoO 3-x -doped MoS 2 /graphene nanocomposites show enhanced conductivity, high surface area and increased electrochemical active sites for redox reactions . The symmetric flexible SCs deliver remarkable areal specific capacitance of 121.88 mF cm −2 under a current density of 0.6 mA cm −2 , excellent cycle performance of almost no loss after 4000 cycles and high energy density of 73.4 μWh cm −2 under a power density of 240 μW cm −2 . This simple and ultra-fast laser-induced self-assembly technique could open up a new avenue towards high-performance flexible energy storage.

To enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), a new precursor solution based on an in situ chemical reaction of nanomolybdenum powder (Mo), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and ammonia (NH3·H2O) was developed for preparing a MoO3 hole transport layer (HTL) for all-PSCs. The results showed that the PCE and stability of PM6:PY-IT solar cells based on the MoO3 HTL were better than those based on a PEDOT:PSS layer. To further understand the relationship between the HTL and the device performance, ultrafast photophysical processes of all-PSCs based on different HTLs were contrastively analyzed. Our research indicated that the micromorphology of active layers could be influenced by the interfacial layer material, consequently determining the photoelectric conversion process of all-PSCs. The MoO3-based all-PSCs had longer charge lifetime, higher charge mobility, and lower charge recombination characteristics compared with the devices based on the PEDOT:PSS layer during the operation time. As a result, the MoO3-based PM6:PY-IT solar cells achieved an initial PCE of 15.2%, and they still maintained more than 80% of their initial efficiency after 1000 h.

As a promising absorber material for thin film solar cells, the highest reported power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) is still far from the detailed balance limit of efficiency due to the large VOC deficit. Back contact engineering plays an important role in promoting the CZTSSe solar cell towards realizing high PCE. In this study, a MoO3-modified layer with the highest oxidation state 6+ and better thermal stability was in situ introduced by spin-coating Na2S aqueous solution on the Mo electrode. The results demonstrate that the Na2S layer at the rear contact provides more Na to diffuse into the absorber, thus improving the crystallinity of the film and the quality of the p–n heterojunction, and the carrier collection in the neutral region and at the front interface of the devices is enhanced. The formation of the MoO3 layer can also inhibit the decomposition reaction between Mo and CZTSSe, which minimizes the secondary phases and voids, and improves the quality of the back interface. Moreover, the band alignment and interfacial barrier at the back contact were modified by the MoO3 layer, resulting in better carrier collection and the reduction of photogenerated carrier recombination. By optimizing the Na2S (MoO3) layer, the average PCE of the CZTSSe solar cell increased to 12.48% from 10.22% with the large VOC increments of 60 mV and FF increments of 5%, and the best performance was achieved, with an active area efficiency of 12.74% without the anti-reflection coating layer.

In order to solve the crisis of energy depletion and protect the beautiful natural environment, the development of efficient, cost-effective and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst has attracted great attention, but it is still an urgent challenge to fabricate an abundant and low cost electrocatalyst. In this article, a novel HER catalyst with heterogeneous structure interfaces was in situ synthesized by multi-step electrodeposition method, and the mechanism of the enhancement of its electrocatalytic activity was elucidated by the combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculation and multi-characterizations. The initial overpotential is only 83 mV and the Tafel slope is only 58.5 mV/dec, which is better than most of other reported CoP-based electrocatalyst. At the meantime, DFT calculations show that the incorporation of MoO 3 and rGO leads to electron redistribution among different components, which ensures efficient adsorption and activation of H 2 O molecules and hydrogen atoms. Therefore, this work will contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms associated with heterojunctions and provide guidance for the rational design of a hybrid catalyst.

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are emerging as a promising class of photocatalysts for pollutants' treatment. In this report, by integrating anti-solvent crystallization and thermal treatments, we have developed a facile and environmental approach for the synthesis of MoO3−x nanosheets in the presence of hexadecyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The thickness of MoO3−x nanosheets varies from 20 nm to 40 nm. CTAB promotes the formation of nanosheet morphology and Mo5+ defects. Combining experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the Mo5+ defect state in MoO3−x nanosheets can enhance visible light harvest and promote the separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. Hence, MoO3−x-8, the optimal photocatalyst, shows the highest concentration of surface Mo5+ defect (18.7%) and the best photocatalytic activity toward rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation. About 95.9% RhB is degraded within 15 min under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). The kinetic rate of MoO3−x-8 reaches 117 times that of commercial MoO3. It was proved by the total organic carbon (TOC) measurements that about 43.3% of RhB molecules were degraded to CO2 and H2O. Overall, this work provides an effective pathway for the nanomaterial design and potential applications in the photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants.

In this study, a series of γ-Fe 2 O 3 -modified V 2 O 5 -MoO 3 /TiO 2 (VMT) catalysts was prepared by wet impregnation method. The γ-Fe 2 O 3 -modified catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance, and 1.25 wt% γ-Fe 2 O 3 content improved the deNO x efficiency at 150 °C from 54% (unmodified VMT catalyst) to 84% (modified catalyst). BET, XRD, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, and in situ DRIFTs were employed to characterize the physicochemical properties and reaction mechanisms of the catalysts. The introduction of γ-Fe 2 O 3 increased the V 5+ /V 4+ ratio, surface chemisorbed oxygen content, redox ability, and a number of acid sites in the prepared catalysts. XPS confirmed the addition of γ-Fe 2 O 3 introduced new charge transfer pathways (Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ↔ V 5+ /V 4+ ). In situ DRIFTs suggested that the addition of γ-Fe 2 O 3 to the catalyst significantly increased the adsorption capacity of catalyst for NH 3 and NO x , while also exerting a strong activating effect on the adsorbed NH 3 . Furthermore, selective catalytic reduction over the VMT and 5PEG@1.25Fe-VMT catalysts followed the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism. At temperatures above 200 °C, the 5PEG@1.25Fe-VMT catalyst also followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism.

Designing highly efficient nonprecious metal electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater electrolyte, particularly under ultra-high current density conditions, remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we successfully synthesized a crystalline/amorphous heterostructured CoNi/MoO 3-x electrocatalyst through a facile hydrothermal method followed by a calcination-reduction process. The as-prepared CoNi/MoO 3-x catalyst exhibited remarkable HER catalytic performance in both alkaline water and seawater electrolytes. Notably, the catalyst achieved impressively low overpotentials of 343 mV in 1 M KOH aqueous solution and 294 mV in alkaline natural seawater electrolyte at an ultra-high current density of 4000 mA/cm 2 . Furthermore, the CoNi/MoO 3-x electrocatalyst demonstrated outstanding long-term stability, maintaining robust performance at current densities of 3000 and 2000 mA/cm 2 . Density functional theory calculations revealed that the synergetic effect between crystalline CoNi and amorphous MoO 3-x accelerates water dissociation kinetics and optimizes hydrogen adsorption. These findings not only provide a promising strategy for developing cost-effective, nonprecious metal electrocatalysts with superior HER performance at ampere-level current densities, particularly for seawater splitting applications.

The construction of semiconductor heterojunction is an effective way for charge separation in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. In this study, a novel MoS 2 @MoO 3 /(Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 ) ternary composites (MMCCN) was prepared via a simple calcination method. The as-prepared composites exhibited exceptional performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The activity testing results indicated that 99.41 % of RhB (10 mg·L −1 , 10 mL) was effectively removed by the synergistic effect of composites photocatalyst (0.1 g·L −1 ) and PMS (0.1 g·L −1 ) under visible light irradiation for 40 min. Its reaction rate constant exceeded that of Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 , MoO 3 and MoS 2 by a factor of 3.56, 17.30 and 11.73 times, respectively. The crystal structure, band gap and density of states (DOS) of the semiconductors were calculated according to the density functional theory (DFT). Free radical trapping tests and electron spin resonance spectroscopy validated that 1 O 2 , O 2 − and h + are primary reactive species participating in the decomposition of RhB. The ternary composites demonstrated good stability and maintained excellent degradation efficiency even across four reaction cycles. Furthermore, the activation mechanism and the intermediates produced during the decomposition course of RhB by MMCCN/PMS/vis system were analyzed and elucidated. A double S-scheme heterojunctions was responsible for efficient separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. This work presents a novel method in the construction of double S-scheme heterojunctions for PMS activation which is expected to find wide applications in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

In the work, the method of chemical vapor deposition reaction of CO and gaseous MoO 3 was proposed to prepare ultrafine Mo 2 C. Different technologies, such as XRD, FESEM, TEM, laser particle size analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, as well as thermodynamic software FactSage 8.3, were adopted to analyze the experimental data. The results revealed that increasing the flow-rate of reduction‑carbonization regent CO ( V outer (CO)) was beneficial for the formation of Mo 2 C; while when V outer (CO) exceeded the threshold value, single-phase Mo 2 C cannot be prepared. The optimal conditions for preparing ultrafine Mo 2 C were given as T = 1223–1323 K, V outer (CO) = 900 mL/min, and V inner (Ar) = 100 mL/min; herein, V inner (Ar) means the flow-rate of carrier gas Ar. Under these conditions, the preparation procedures of Mo 2 C followed the pathways of MoO 3 → (MoO 3 ) n ( n = 2, 3, 4, and 5) → MoO 2 → Mo 2 C. The study also discovered that the as-prepared Mo 2 C kept the overall morphology as the intermediate product MoO 2 with a hexagonal-platelet structure; however, due to the removal of oxygen and the decrease of products' molar volume, the prepared Mo 2 C exhibited a rougher and more porous micro-structure with a specific surface area up to 36.7 m 2 /g. This work may provide an important methodical guidance for the scale-preparation of ultrafine Mo 2 C.

Molybdenum trioxide holds the promise of high-performance cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. This study introduces a facile one-step method for large-scale synthesizing B, C co-doped α -MoO 3 single crystals by simultaneous decomposition of boric acid, carburization and vapor deposition on a molybdenum substrate. Experimental characterizations indicate that the B and C co-doping promotes the carrier mobility by inducing impurity states near the Fermi level. Additionally, when subjected to the high voltage, the Mo-C and Mo-B bonds become the controlling factors for enhancing the structural stability through the reduced interplanar spacing which facilitates the restriction of transition-metal ion migration. The target material delivers a high discharge capacity of 305 mAh g −1 with initial Coulombic efficiency of 98%, and shows remarkable cycle stability with a specific capacity of 280 mAh g −1 after 80 cycles. This study sheds light on a new strategy for designing and controlling of the doping activity in other transition-metal-oxides for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Novel monoclinic Bi 2 O 3 -xRE 2 O 3 -yMoO 3 (RE=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Yb) based low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) systems with high sintering density and low microwave dielectric loss are synthesized by conventional solid state reaction technique. The structure and dielectric properties of Bi 2 O 3 -xRE 2 O 3 -yMoO 3 ceramics are investigated. Dense BiNdMoO 6 ceramics sintered at 900 °C for 8 h in air have a low dielectric constant ε r =~7.5, a high quality factor Q × f =~ 24, 800 GHz at 7.0 GHz, and τ f =~−16 ppm/̊C. Especially, good chemical compatibility of BiNdMoO 6 with Ag electrodes is represented as well. In contrast, BiSmMoO 6 ceramics sintered at 1000 °C for 8 h show enhanced Q×f =~43, 700 GHz at 7.8 GHz with ε r = ~8.5 and τ f = ~−27 ppm/°C.
