Membrane separation has emerged as a competitive energy-efficient approach for carbon capture and flue gas treatment. Membrane materials and structures are the core of gas separation membranes, which collectively govern gas molecular mass transfer and separation behaviors. Two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) porous nanosheets hold great promise for gas separation due to their nanoscale thickness and structural tunability, but they are often limited by low permeability. Herein, we propose a supramolecular strategy to fabricate ZIF-L/GO/Pebax mixed matrix membranes with intercalated network architectures for efficient CO 2 /N 2 separation. Leaf-like ZIF-L expands the interlayer spacing of GO nanosheets and constructs high-speed continuous gas transport pathways within the membrane. This unique intercalated structure provides abundant CO 2 -philic sites, significantly enhancing CO 2 solubility and enabling highly selective gas molecular sieving. Moreover, hydrogen bonds and chelation coordination interactions between ZIF-L/GO and polymer matrix ensure excellent interfacial compatibility while reinforcing structural stability. This supramolecular structural engineering approach effectively mitigates the limitations of traditional membranes, achieving CO 2 permeability of 1000.8 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 45, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound and approaching the 2019 limit. Additionally, the membrane displays superior mechanical properties and long-term operational stability, providing a promising avenue toward high-performance materials for efficient CO 2 capture.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) offer a promising route to high-performance gas separation by integrating the benefits of fillers and polymer matrices. However, Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) suffers from poor interfacial compatibility with fillers and is constrained by the Robeson upper bound. As a result, the selectivity of MMMs remains less than ideal. This study proposes a cross-scale coordination strategy that adjusts the molar ratio of β -cyclodextrin ( β -CD) to the oligomer KH560-M2070 during the synthesis of porous liquids (PLs). This cross-scale coordination boosts MMM performance at both macro and micro levels. Grafting more oligomers increases the porous liquid's fluidity at the macroscopic scale. This effect arises from fewer hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on β -CD and the “like dissolves like” nature of the oligomers. As a result, the filler loading increases from 2 wt% to 10 wt%. KH560-M2070 and β -CD are covalently linked at both ends, creating a graded pore structure (0.41–0.8 nm) at the microscopic level. Our experimental data show that the β -CD PLs (1:0.7)/PIM-1 MMM achieves a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 65.68 ± 2.16 at 30 °C, well above the 2019 Robeson upper bound. This cross-scale strategy thus offers a new route for applying porous liquids in gas separation.

Abstract The enzymatic synthesis of flavor esters is often limited by poor interfacial mass transfer and water-induced equilibrium constraints in conventional systems. Herein, we report a food-grade magnetic Pickering interfacial biocatalysis (PIB) platform based on sodium caseinate (NaCas)–Fe2O3 nanoparticles for accelerated flavor ester synthesis. The nanoparticles, synthesized via a one-pot coprecipitation method, exhibit excellent colloidal stability, CO2/N2-responsive behavior, and magnetic responsiveness. Under an external magnetic field, magnetic actuation induces localized interfacial perturbations that promote substrate exchange at the oil–water interface. Using CALB-catalyzed synthesis of hexyl hexanoate as a model reaction, the magnetically perturbed PIB system achieved over 2-fold higher catalytic efficiency than a static Pickering emulsion within 10 min. Furthermore, CO2/N2 responsiveness enables rapid demulsification and efficient recycling of both nanoparticles and enzymes, with yields exceeding 89% over five consecutive cycles. This work provides a protein-based, magnetically induced interfacial perturbation platform for clean-label flavor ester production.

Eco-friendly electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is aimed to replace the traditional polluting industrial process, but NRR needs electrocatalysts with high selectivity and activity to boost desired NH 3 yield rate and Faradic efficiency (FE). In this work, high-entropy sulfides (HES) (FeCoNiMoM)S x (M=Cr, Cu, Mn) were synthesized via a two-step solvothermal method. The optimized composition for HES is (FeCoNiMoCr)S x , with promising NRR performance that NH 3 yield rate reached 47.97 µg/(h·mg cat ) at −0.7 V vs RHE and FE was 26.1% at −0.4 V vs RHE. Comprehensive characterization and electrochemical testing were performed to investigate the effects of the metal component on NRR performance. It reveals that (FeCoNiMoCr)S x shows more intense charge transport, more electrocatalytic active sites, higher selectivity, etc, resulting from the electron transport and element synergy of HES. Also, it is proved to have targeted NRR selectivity and limiting competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. The results offer promising guidance for further improving the NRR electrocatalysts based on transition elements.

Ammonia (NH3) synthesis with hydrogen (H2) produced from renewable energy is a promising route to reduce carbon footprints and the dependence on fossil fuels. However, the development of highly efficient and stable catalyst for NH3 synthesis under mild conditions is a challenge. Herein, a series of boron nitride (BN)-supported Ru catalysts were synthesized, and the NH3 synthesis rate was enhanced significantly after the introduce of Ce. The developed RuCe2.4/BN catalyst with a Ce/Ru molar ratio of 2.4 exhibited the optimal NH3 synthesis rate of 14.6 mmolNH3 gcat−1 h−1 at 400 °C and 1.0 MPa, which was ∼21-fold that of the catalyst prepared without Ce. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of CO adsorption and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy revealed that the d–d electronic interaction between Ru and CeO2 can be differentially adjusted by a change in the Ce/Ru molar ratio. An appropriate amount of Ce could enhance the electronic interaction between the CeOy overlayer and Ru entities. Also, the CeOy overlayer acted as an “electron shuttle” and enhanced the charge transfer from Ce to the surface of Ru atoms. Finally, electron donation occurred from the surface abundancy of Ru atoms to N2 molecule through a d–π* interaction. Moreover, the introduction of excessive Ce could block Ru active sites, weaken the electron transfer and, therefore, decrease the NH3 synthesis rate.

Herein, we assemble semi-metallic 1T′ phase MoS 2 on the surface Ti 3 C 2 MXene (1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composite) by one-step hydrothermal method for nitrogen fixation. 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composites present a high ammonia yield rate of 31.96 µg h −1 mg −1 cat. at − 0.95 V vs. RHE and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 30.75% at − 0.7 V, which is much better than pure 1T′-MoS 2 and pure Ti 3 C 2 MXenes alone. Furthermore, the 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composites exhibit good selectivity and stability with no significant decrease in ammonia yield rate and FE. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that 1T′-MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 composite makes the activation and further reduction of *N 2 more thermodynamically favorable than pure 1T′-MoS 2 . 1 5 N isotopic labeling experiment confirms that nitrogen in produced ammonia originates from N 2 in the electrolyte.

Ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, especially in offshore aquaculture systems . Electrochemical oxidation is very promising to remove NH 4 + -N, but suffers from the use of precious metals anodes. In this work, a robust and cheap electrocatalyst , iron single-atoms distributed in nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-SAs/N-C), was developed for electrochemical removal of NH 4 + -N from in wastewater containing chloride. The Fe-SAs/N-C catalyst exhibited superior activity than that of iron nanoparticles loaded carbon (Fe-NPs/N-C), unmodified carbon and conventional Ti/IrO 2 -TiO 2 -RuO 2 electrodes. And high removal efficiency (> 99%) could be achieved as well as high N 2 selectivity (99.5%) at low current density. Further experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated the indispensable role of single-atom iron in the promoted generation of chloride derived species for efficient removal of NH 4 + -N. This study provides promising inexpensive catalysts for NH 4 + -N removal in aquaculture wastewater.

Hollow SAPO-34 with an average particle size of ca .370 nm was synthesized by selective etching its precursor under the controlled alkaline condition. Subsequently, freestanding mixed matrix membranes were synthesized by UV-induced in-situ polymerization of the mixture of hollow SAPO-34, the fluorinated monomer , and the trifunctional cross-linker. The structure and the physical characteristic of hollow SAPO-34 and membranes were characterized by scan electron microscope, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, etc. The effect of the hollow SAPO-34 loading amount on the gas permeation-separation performance of mixed matrix membranes was investigated. The results showed that hollowing out SAPO-34 improved the N 2 /CH 4 sorption selectivity and converted the crystals from preferential adsorption of N 2 to preferential adsorption of CH 4 , the incorporation of hollow SAPO-34 into membranes increased the N 2 /CH 4 solubility selectivity and the permeability. The optimal membrane exhibited a 39-fold increase in N 2 permeability from 6.9 × 10 −13 to 2.7 × 10 −11 cm 3 (STP)cm·cm −2 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 at 0.2 MPa and 35 °C without the loss of N 2 /CH 4 permselectivity, which exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper bound.

Here, high-silica SSZ-13 membranes were prepared on macroporous supports by regulating sodium sources (NaOH, NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 and sodium-free) under fluoride and aluminum free gel. A pure phase and high gas permeation SSZ-13 membrane with oval-shaped crystals on the membrane surface was obtained by NaCl. It suggests that alkali metal sodium ion promoted crystal crystallization. The influence of Na 2 O (2NaCl)/SiO 2 ratio (from 0.025 to 0.2) on the crystallization process of zeolite membranes was investigated in detail by XRD , SEM and gas permeation tests. The content of NaCl hardly affected the structure of SSZ-13 but could affect the morphology and size of the crystals. The best membrane (NaCl/SiO 2 = 0.2) had a mixed CO 2 and N 2 gas permeance of 5.4 × 10 −7 mol/(m 2 s Pa) and 5.2 × 10 −8 mol/(m 2 s Pa), along with the CO 2 /CH 4 and N 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 155 and 12.3, respectively. The effects of pressure drop, temperature and feed concentration on membrane separation performance were explored. In addition, the obtained SSZ-13 membrane exhibited the hydrothermal stability in the humid N 2 /CH 4 mixture under 298K, indicating the application prospects in natural gas separation.

The study aims to examine the suppression performance of an inhibitor after a methane/coal dust explosion. The design of an explosion suppression system included the carrier gas of nitrogen (N 2 ) with an inhibitor of ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The study investigated fire extinguishing and explosion suppression of methane/coal dust by N 2 /APP in a vertical pipe. Flame propagation characteristics were measured by a high-speed camera, micro-thermocouple, and pressure sensor . The residues after the explosion were characterized chemically by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the thermal decomposition characteristics of coal dust and APP in the N 2 atmosphere were analyzed by synchronous thermal analysis. Experimental results show that the explosion suppression system can effectively hinder the flame propagation of methane/coal dust explosion. The flame height, bottom velocity, and temperature were all weakened significantly. The optimum level of suppressant minimizes the explosion pressure and suppresses the flame significantly. In addition, the fire extinguishing and explosion suppression mechanisms of N 2 /APP were summarized. The suppression method used in this study blocks the explosion after it occurs rather than preventing it through premixed inerting.

Transition metal nitrogenous complexes have been extensively studied for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia due to their great capabilities in adsorbing and activating nitrogen molecules; yet the improvement of their catalytic performance is still a big challenge. Herein, a series of novel bimetallic Fe, Mo–N nanosheet arrays (FeMo–N) supported on nickel foam were fabricated through a facile hydrothermal–pyrolysis method, which were used as electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). It was discovered that the catalyst Fe1Mo1–N exhibited a promising performance with a NH3 yield rate of 46.64 μg mg−1cat. h−1 and a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 1.12% at −0.8 V vs. RHE, which also demonstrated excellent selectivity and thermal stability. The specific two-dimensional nanosheet morphology of the catalyst was believed to be the major reason contributing to the prominent electrochemical performance. The XPS characterization and NH3 yield study at different N contents in the M–N bond further revealed that FeMo–N species are the primary active centers for the NRR, and the N content forming the M–N bond is closely related to the catalytic activity.

CO is an important raw material and the separation of CO/N 2 in blast furnace gas can supply an abundant source of CO. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) containing open metal sites are capable of selectively binding to CO over N 2 . However, the open metal sites easily bind to guest molecules during the preparation and activation process. In this study, typical MOFs containing open metal sites (Co-MOF-74) were used to investigate the activation behavior and corresponding CO/N 2 adsorptive separation performance. To characterize the removal and decomposition of guest molecules, TG-MS and NMR analysis of MOF-74 prepared under different activation conditions were performed. During the heat and vacuum process, the guest H 2 O and methanol (MeOH) molecules in Co-MOF-74 were first removed at 150 °C under vacuum. The aim of high temperature activation at 300 °C is the decomposition of a small amount of bind N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and terminal ligands occupying the open metal sites in Co-MOF-74. In addition, H 2 O molecules occupy the open metal sites of Co-MOF-74 during the filtration and MeOH wash steps under air, which is accompanied by the removal of a portion of DMF. The CO adsorption (298 K and 1 bar) and the CO/N 2 selectivity (Ideal adsorbed solution theory: 50:50, v/v) of Co-MOF-74 activated at 300 °C was 6.07 mmol/g and 384, respectively, which was higher than that of the other activated Co-MOF-74 samples and was attributed to the effective removal of guest molecules. Our results may guide the activation of MOFs, which contain open metal sites.
