Catalytic transfer hydrogenation is an effective means of producing allylic alcohols from α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with extremely high selectivity. A composite catalyst bearing Lewis acid and base sites was prepared from Al(NO3)3 and dopamine hydrochloride in a one-pot synthesis followed by thermal treatment in nitrogen. The resultant catalyst exhibited remarkably high performance in transfer hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to selectively produce cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using isopropanol as both hydrogen donor and solvent. A CAL conversion of 99.0% with COL selectivity of 98.9% was achieved under optimal conditions. This indicates that the nitrogen functional groups on N-doped carbon (NC), particularly pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N, significantly enhanced the catalytic efficiency of Al2O3. The enhancement of pyrrolic-N and graphitic-N in the vicinity of Al2O3 might be attributed to their concerted function in helping to deprotonate isopropanol. Based on the catalyst poisoning results, a catalytic mechanism with Lewis acid–base pairs was tentatively proposed. In addition, the composite catalyst exhibited high performances in the transfer hydrogenation of other α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, including furfural, benzaldehyde, cyclohexanone, and syringaldehyde, to selectively produce the corresponding allylic alcohols.

The development of high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) remains critical to overcome the limitations of lithium-ion technologies. In this work, Mo-doped Ni 2 P encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo-Ni 2 P@NC) SIB anodes with nanosheet-stacked porous architectures through a solvothermal and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach were synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed lattice expansion due to Mo substitution. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that Mo doping significantly enhanced the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) from 51.6 % (pristine Ni 2 P) to 70.2 % and achieved a reversible specific capacity of 456 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 after 2000 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that Mo doping induced charge redistribution, lowered Na + adsorption energy. Furthermore, vacancy defects produced by Mo-doping facilitate rapid ion transport and pseudocapacitive-dominated Na + storage behavior minimized volume changes, ensuring long-term stability. Simultaneously, the optimized Mo-Ni 2 P@NC-2||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C full-cell delivered 143 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , highlighting its practical application. This work elucidates the synergistic effects of heteroatom doping and vacancy in enhancing SIB anode performance, providing a strategy for designing high-ICE and durable energy storage materials.

Iron-based catalysts have been widely used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment of carbamazepine (CBZ) wastewater. However, the development of efficient and stable pyrite (FeS 2 )-based catalysts to mitigate the consumption of Fe 3 + /Fe 2+ and S 2 2– is still challenging. Herein, FeS 2 /nitrogen-doped carbon (FeS 2 /NC) composite was synthesized using hydrothermal combined with pyrolytic strategy, wherein FeS 2 and NC connected by Fe−N x and Fe−C x bonds. In the photo-PMS system, FeS 2 /NC achieved a removal rate of 98.2 % for CBZ within 6 min, and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 83.4 %, which exceeded FeS 2 and most of the results reported in the previous literature. The electron paramagnetic resonance results and quenching experiments confirmed that 1 O 2 played a critical role in the FeS 2 /NC + PMS + visible light system, while h + , SO 4 • − , and •O 2 − were secondary. The excellent performance stemmed from that the Fe−N x and Fe−C x bonds between FeS 2 and NC enhanced the photogenerated electron transport efficiency, resulting in efficiently circulating Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and minimizing the S 2 2– consumption. Meanwhile, the electron-deficient graphitic-N could facilitate the 1 O 2 generation. Moreover, FeS 2 /NC exhibited good stability and satisfactory universality, providing the potential for actual wastewater treatment. This work offers a novel strategy for enhancing the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle and reducing the S 2 2– consumption of FeS 2 -based catalyst for the effective treatment of CBZ wastewater.

The strong hydrogen binding affinity on Ru surfaces and their intrinsic aggregation tendency pose significant challenges to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Ru-based electrocatalysts. The construction of active electrocatalysts composed of partially dispersed nanoparticles (NPs) and individual single atomic sites with robust thermodynamic stability, has emerged as a viable alternative to benchmark commercial HER electrocatalyst. Herein, a multi-step strategy was designed to synthesize Ru NP @Fe SA -NC electrocatalyst and a robust interaction between uniformly dispersed Ru NPs and embedded single-atom Fe sites was uncovered, which not only regulates the particle size of Ru NPs but also controls the spin state and electronic configuration of Fe single atom. Moreover, magnetic characterization further corroborates the synergetic effect and predicts that the synergetic effect induces a high spin state of the Fe atom with unpaired electrons in the 3 d orbitals, which enhances the adsorption of intermediates and accelerates the reaction kinetics. The as obtained electrocatalyst demonstrate exceptional performance with a low overpotential of 13 mV at 10 mA cm -2 in alkaline condition. Remarkably, theoretical calculations indicates that the outstanding performance of Ru NP @Fe SA -NC stems from the Fe optimized electronic structure of the Ru site, which downshifts the d-band center, reduces the energy barriers for water dissociation and optimizes H* desorption, thereby promoting HER. This study presents an innovative approach to utilize Fe SA -NC to stabilize Ru NPs and reduce the energy barrier, contributing to an ideal HER performance.

A sustainable, template-free self-assembly synthesis was used to fabricate biomass-based, highly efficient HPCFs@FeCoNi@NC (HPCFs refer to helical/chiral porous carbon fibers at 700 and 800 °C carbonization temperatures, and NC is accredited to N-doped porous carbon structures) as electromagnetic wave absorbers (EMAs). The synthesis of HPCFs@FeCoNi@NC as an EMA circumvents prerequisite tiresome treatments, laborious work, high energy-intensive chemical fabrication, and precursors (e.g., MOF-74) and other organic binders (PVA, PVB, H4DOT, etc.). The fabricated EMA exhibits top-notch electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption capabilities with improved reflection loss (RL) across a broad spectrum, achieving efficient absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB), covering 0.90–7.00 GHz over 3.00–18.00 GHz at a 1.00–6.00 mm matching thickness. Noticeably, HPCFs700@FeCoNi@NC2b as an EMA has gained an RL of −86.16 dB over 11.60 GHz, with the EAB covering 9.60–13.80 GHz (4.20 GHz) at a matching thickness of 2.60 mm. Furthermore, HPCFs800@FeCoNi@NC2b achieved an RL of −86.28 dB with an EAB of 2.20 GHz (covering 8.70–10.90 GHz) at a 2.44 mm matching thickness and 9.60 GHz. The EMA’s improved RL over a broad-spectrum EAB is accredited to its unique structural morphology, better dissipation/attenuation mechanisms of EMW, additional loss mechanisms, and so on. Likewise, the EMA’s ability to dissipate/attenuate EMW across low and high frequencies (3.00–18.00 GHz) makes it a novel contender for futuristic applications.

For clean and renewable energy research, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical. Herein, cobalt phosphide/N-doped carbon (CoP/NC) was synthesized by an extremely convenient approach. Compared with pure CoP, NC wrapped around CoP nanoparticles, which prevented the agglomeration and improved electron transfer of CoP. The obtained CoP/NC exhibited better activity than pure CoP, which has a low overpotential (η 10 =139/248 mV) and a small Tafel slope (59/82 mV dec −1 ) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH for the HER. CoP/NC exhibited excellent stability with no obvious change in activity for the HER after 5000 cycles. CoP/NC also had high ORR activity, which gave a more positive half-potential (0.85 V) and onset potential (0.9 V) than pure CoP at 1600 rpm in 0.1 M KOH.

Silicon holds exceptional promise as a next-generation lithium-ion battery anode, yet its practical deployment remains hindered by drastic volume fluctuations, unstable interphases, and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. This work reports a triple-isolation and triple-conductive hierarchical architecture (Si/CuCo-NC@rGO), which enables independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electron transport. In this system, silicon nanoparticles are encapsulated within a MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon framework and are further constrained by an externally distributed network of metallic nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). This hierarchical configuration simultaneously ensures mechanical stability and enables efficient charge transport. The introduction of graphene effectively suppresses the aggregation of MOF-derived metal species during pyrolysis, leading to the in-situ formation of ultrasmall and uniformly dispersed Cu/Co nanoparticles (∼20 nm) embedded in a highly defective N-doped carbon matrix. This multilevel architecture provides robust mechanical buffering, abundant ion-accessible channels, and a multiscale electron-transport network, while the flexible rGO shell maintains long-range electrical continuity and interfacial integrity during repeated cycling. Such cooperative confinement markedly accelerates Li + diffusion, enhances pseudocapacitive contributions, facilitates uniform SEI formation, and significantly suppresses Si expansion from 151.7% to only 48.6% after cycling. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized composite delivers a reversible capacity of 1013.2 mAh g −1 over 700 cycles at 1 A g −1 and an exceptional rate capability of 1160.6 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 . This work presents a generalizable structural engineering strategy that enables the independent regulation and synergistic optimization of mechanical stability and electronic transport, offering valuable design insights for the development of long-life, high-performance silicon anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

The commercialization of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries faces significant challenges due to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and sluggish reaction kinetics. To address these issues, a Mo2C-GO-NC interlayer, decorated with bifunctional Mo2C–N binding sites, is successfully synthesized via a facile one-step complexation method. The combination of transition metal molybdenum and nitrogen doping endows the reduced graphene oxide with a unique porous structure, strong chemisorption capabilities, and exceptional catalytic conversion properties. The Mo2C-GO-NC interlayer effectively traps lithium polysulfides and accelerates their conversion, as confirmed by theoretical calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy. These studies reveal that the bifunctional Mo2C–N sites promote uniform Li2S deposition and enhance Li+ migration, significantly improving the reaction kinetics. As a result, the Li–S cells assembled by the Mo2C-GO-NC-modified separator exhibit a high initial capacity of 906.1 mAh g–1 at 1 C with a capacity decay rate of only 0.032% per cycle. In addition, a discharge capacity of 832.2 mAh g–1 was still exhibited after 110 cycles at a high sulfur loading of 5 mg cm–2. This work offers a strategic approach for designing advanced interlayers with bifunctional binding sites, paving the way for high-performance Li–S batteries.

Renewable solar energy meeting photothermal materials provides a promising approach for freshwater production via interfacial steam generation. The design and manufacture of high-performance evaporators are still highly anticipated for practical applications. Herein, the robust and durable solar evaporator is proposed and fabricated by integration of photothermal Cu-CuO x /NC (CNC) and three-dimensional porous structure heat-insulated polyurethane (PU) foam with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium alginate (SA) modifications. The designed PVA-SA-CNC/PU simultaneously possesses fast water transmission, broadband light trapping, satisfactory mechanical robustness and effective heat confinement. When applied as a solar evaporator, the PVA-SA-CNC/PU exhibits a high evaporation rate of 1.99 kg m −2 h −1 and operates stably within ten consecutive cycles under one-sun illumination, which can also handle salt tolerant desalination of seawater and saline water to sustainably produce freshwater. In addition, the functional versatility of the fabricated evaporator is explored to purify various wastewater. This study establishes a highly efficient integrated evaporator with multitasking water purification towards the solution of water shortage.

The indoor low-concentration formaldehyde (HCHO) removal in cobalt-based catalysts is still a “hot potato”. In this work, metal–organic-frameworks (MOF)-derived and Zinc (Zn)-modulated new cobalt nanoparticles catalyst (CZ-Co@NC-800) was designed and prepared. The CZ-Co@NC-800 performed outstanding elimination activities for ~1 ppm HCHO at 25 °C. In the static test condition, it achieves complete HCHO removal in 3 h at a relative humidity (RH) of ~55%. Moreover, 90.18% HCHO removal ratio is held after five recycle tests. In the dynamic test condition, it remains the characteristic to eliminate around 95.89% of HCHO within 8 h under an RH of ~55% and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of ~150,000 mL·h −1 g −1 . Such advanced results should be ascribed to large specific surface area bringing about more cobalt active sites; and it is also because residual Zn metal affects the electronic structure of CZ-Co@NC-800 and enhance the surface charge transfer rate, thus the activation and dissociation ability of oxygen is promoted. Besides, a short HCHO reaction path over CZ-Co@NC-800 which was clarified by the In situ DRIFTs is also a reason for excellent catalytic performance. This work represents a crucial addition to expand the family of cobalt-based catalysts for indoor HCHO elimination.

Creating oxygen vacancies and introducing heterostructures are two widely used strategies in Co-based oxides for their efficient electrocatalytic performance, yet both strategies have rarely been used together to design a bifunctional electrocatalyst for an efficient overall water splitting. Herein, we propose a facile strategy to synthesize oxygen-defect-rich Co9S8/CoO hetero-nanoparticles with a nitrogen-doped carbon shell (ODR-Co9S8/CoO/NC) through the in situ conversion of heterojunction along with surface-induced oxygen vacancies, simply via annealing the precursor Co3S4/Co(OH)2/ZIF-67. The as-prepared ODR-Co9S8/CoO/NC shows excellent bifunctional catalytic activities, featuring a low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm−2in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 160 mV at 10 mA cm−2in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This performance excellency is attributed to unique heterostructure and oxygen defects in Co9S8/CoO nanoparticles, the current work is expected to offer new insights to the design of cost-effective, noble-metal-free electrocatalysts. Keywords:oxygen vacancies;heterojunction;oxygen evolution reaction;hydrogen evolution reaction

The utilization of natural clay minerals for synthesizing nano-sized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) supported materials offers great advantages for rational design of innovative catalysts, which promotes the low-cost and large-scale environmental remediation applications. This work reported a facile and scalable encapsulation-pyrolysis strategy to prepare novel Au-HNTs@Co-NC core-shell catalyst for catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic pollutants. The HNTs were modified with aminosilane on the external surface for effectively anchoring well-dispersed and ultrasmall Au NPs. Uniform nano-sized ZIF-67 crystals controllably embraced the Au-HNTs via in-situ growth induced by electrostatic adsorption. The N 2 atmosphere pyrolysis at 550 °C resulted in Co NPs embedded into N-doped carbon substrates, and transformed ZIF-67 crystals into Co-NC layers for preferable encapsulation and stabilization of Au NPs. The as-prepared Au-HNTs@Co-NC-550 catalyst manifested splendid catalytic performance for p-nitrophenol reduction, and achieved the reaction rate constant and TOF value estimated as 2.025 min −1 and 49.25 min −1 , which significantly exceeded the behaviors of as-prepared control materials. Moreover, the catalyst also displayed excellent catalytic capability toward the reduction of nitroanilines and homologues and isomers of p-nitrophenol, indicative of its decent general applicability. After 8 cycles of reactions, the catalyst still retained brilliant reusability and structural stability with good magnetic property for expedient separation. The advantageous hollow core-shell structure combining HNTs and ZIF-67 derivatives enhanced the reactant diffusion and transfer. The N doping and electronegativity difference between Co and Au aroused higher electron uptake and facilitated electron transport during the reduction process. Meanwhile, the Co–H and Au–H bonds formed the strong synergistic effect for superior cooperative catalytic performance of the catalyst.
