Though photocatalytic purification of NO has been widely studied, how to avoid secondary pollution during gas-solid reaction is still a challenge, especially in inhibiting the formation of toxic intermediates (NO 2 ) and avoiding the blow away of powdery photocatalyst. Herein, we proposed a one-step solvothermal method to prepare melamine sponge (MS) supported and functionalized g-C 3 N 4 (CN), which simultaneously realizes the inhibition of NO 2 formation and catalyst loss. Sodium hydroxide , which plays a dual role, has been introduced during the preparation of supported photocatalyst. Specifically, sodium atom, as the modifier of performance, could facilitate the randomly distributed charge of pristine CN to be converged, which accelerates the adsorption/activation of reactants for efficient and deep NO oxidation . Hydroxyl group, as the binder between CN and MS, induces the interaction by forming hydrogen bonds , which contributes to the firm immobilization of powdery photocatalyst. The supported sample exhibits outstanding NO removal rate (58.90%) and extremely low NO 2 generation rate (1.41%), and the mass loss rate of photocatalyst before and after reaction is less than 1%. The promotion mechanism of performance also has been elaborated. This work takes environmental risks as a prerequisite to propose a feasible strategy for perfecting the practical application of photocatalytic technology .

Conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors often suffer from high operating temperatures, low selectivity, and complex synthesis processes for NO2 detection. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets are coated on NaOH-etched Cu2O/CuO urchin-like spheres to form Cu2O/CuO@rGO composites via a one-step green synthesis method at room temperature (RT). The gas sensor based on this material has been utilized for detecting NO2 at RT (25 °C), and the effects of Cu2O addition and reaction time on the morphology as well as gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared sensor are investigated. Of interest, the sensor based on the 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO-5 composite has an ultra-high response (S = 871) to 5 ppm NO2 gas at RT with a response/recovery time of 32/73 s, and the detection limit is as low as 90.6 ppt. In addition, the gas sensor shows excellent selectivity and repeatability. The excellent sensing performance of the as-prepared 550Cu2O/CuO@rGO sensor is attributed to the framework structure of Cu2O/CuO@rGO, the urchin-like hierarchical structure of the Cu2O/CuO and the synergistic effect of the p–p (Cu2O–CuO) heterojunction. This exploration of the present work offers a good reference for mass, green, and low-power sensing material preparation.

Monitoring and reducing NO 2 pollution at room temperature is indispensable for human survival. Thus, we propose a light-activated route (UV light, 100 mW/cm 2 ) to realize a high-performance NO 2 detection based on CuO/rGO gas sensor. The CuO/rGO sensor under UV light illumination exhibits a high response of 22.18–100 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is approximately 1.36 times of the CuO/rGO sensor and 2.31 times of the CuO sensor under dark, respectively. Meanwhile, under UV light illumination, the CuO/rGO sensor has a fast response/recovery speed of 10.9/30.9 s to 20 ppm NO 2 at 23 ℃, which is obviously better than that under dark. Moreover, the light-activated CuO/rGO sensor has excellent repeatability, selectivity, ultra-low detection limit (50 ppb) and long-term stability. The significantly appealing gas-sensing performance of CuO/rGO sensor is mainly ascribed to the mesoporous structure, high specific surface area and plentiful oxygen vacancy of CuO/rGO nanocomposites . More attractively, the photo-generated carriers and formed heterojunction also greatly improve the carrier migration in the context of the NO 2 /CuO/rGO interaction, enhancing the gas-sensing performance of gas sensor. Our work will provide insight in utilizing light illumination to realize ultrasensitive and room-temperature detection of ppb-level NO 2 gas.

To exploit high-performance and stable sensing materials with a room working temperature is pivotal for portable and mobile sensor devices. However, the common sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors usually need a higher working temperature (usually above 300 °C) to achieve a good response toward gas detection. Currently, metal halide perovskites have begun to rise as a promising candidate for gas monitoring at room temperature but suffer phase instability. Herein, we construct 1D/3D PyPbI3/FA0.83Cs0.17PbI3(denoted by PyPbI3/FACs) bilayer perovskite by post-processing spin-coating Pyrrolidinium hydroiodide (PyI) salt on top of 3D FACs film. Benefitting from the 1D PyPbI3coating layer, the phase stability of 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs significantly improves. Simultaneously, the gas sensor based on the 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs bilayer perovskite presents a superior selectivity and sensitivity toward NO2detection at room temperature, with a low detection limit of 220 ppb. Exposed to a 50 ± 3% relative humidity (RH) level environment for a consecutive six days, the 1D/3D PyPbI3/FACs perovskite-based sensor toward 10 ppm NO2can still maintain a rapid response with a slight attenuation. Gas sensors based on hybrid 1D/3D-structured perovskite in this work may provide a new pathway for highly sensitive and stable gas sensors in room working temperature, accelerating its practical application and portable device. Keywords:gas sensor;NO2detection;1D/3D hybrid-structured perovskite;room temperature;stability

As a strong oxidizing pollutant, NO 2 can cause fire or even explosion. People living in atmosphere containing NO 2 for a long time will significantly affects human health. In this work, we developed a Schottky heterojunction sensor modified by g-C 3 N 4 quantum dots (g-C 3 N 4 QDs) and rGO deposited on TiO 2 nanotubes (TNTs) arrays. This sensor showed high response and extremely fast response/recovery time as well as excellent detection of ppb level of NO 2 at room temperature. TNTs were obtained using a one-step anodic oxidation process. TNTs were modified with g-C 3 N 4 QDs and rGO using quasi -CVD method and cyclic voltammetry during in situ electrodeposition, respectively. TNTs/g-C 3 N 4 QDs/rGO Schottky heterojunction sensor exhibited high sensitivity to 10 ppm of NO 2 (response equal to 15982) at room temperature. Below 15 ppb, sensing response also can reach 127. Sensor response was very fast and increased to 15982 in just 2 s when exposed to 10 ppm of NO 2 after which it recovers 90% within 1.16 s. This work clarified the influence of abundant oxygen vacancies (VO · ) in TNTs and photogenerated electrons on TNTs/g-C 3 N 4 QDs/rGO nanostructures as well as their sensing performances. Our experimental details demonstrated that Schottky barrier was established between TNTs and rGO, which was very beneficial for ppb-level NO 2 detection at room temperature.

In this paper, we demonstrate room-temperature NO 2 gas sensors using Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and SnO 2 NPs decorated reduced graphene oxide (Pd-SnO 2 -RGO) hybrids as sensing materials. It is found that ultrafine Pd NPs and SnO 2 NPs with particle sizes of 3–5 nm are attached to RGO nanosheets . Compared to SnO 2 -RGO hybrids, the sensor based on Pd-SnO 2 -RGO hybrids exhibited higher sensitivity at room temperature , where the response to 1 ppm NO 2 was 3.92 with the response time and recovery time being 13 s and 105 s. Moreover, such sensor exhibited excellent selectivity , and low detection limit (50 ppb). In addition to high transport capability of RGO as well as excellent NO 2 adsorption ability derived from ultrafine SnO 2 NPs and Pd NPs, the superior sensing performances of the hybrids were attributed to the synergetic effect of Pd NPs, SnO 2 NPs and RGO. Particularly, the excellent sensing performances were related to high conductivity and catalytic activity of Pd NPs. Finally, the sensing mechanism for NO 2 sensing and the reason for enhanced sensing performances by introduction of Pd NPs are also discussed.

Real-time detection of harmful gases at room temperature has become a serious problem in public health and environmental monitoring. Two-dimensional materials with semiconductor properties BiOCl is a promising gas-sensitive material due to its large specific surface area and adjustable band gap as well as outstanding safety characteristics. However, limited by the weak gas adsorption sites and sluggish charge-transfer ability, the performance of BiOCl could not be fully exploited. Oxygen vacancy (Vo) engineering can introduce lattice defects, thereby significantly increasing the local charge density and enhancing the adsorption of gases, which is an effective strategy to enhance the gas-sensing performance. In this work, we composite BiOCl with a vacancy (Vo-BiOCl) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to construct a Vo-BiOCl/rGO heterostructure with enhanced gas adsorption sites. Experimental and theoretical calculations show that Vo can enhance the adsorption of gases and the introduction of rGO forms a high-quality heterostructure with BiOCl, which can effectively reduce the band gap of BiOCl and promote electron transfer, thereby improving the sensitivity of the sensor. Benefiting from above, Vo-BiOCl/rGO achieves the ability to detect low concentrations of NO2/NH3 at room temperature, with high sensitivity (55% at 1 ppm of NO2 and −28% at 1 ppm of NH3), fast response time (40 s at 1 ppm of NO2 and 2 s at 1 ppm of NH3), good stability (over 150 days), and fully recoverable gas sensitivity.

Nitryl surface functionalized TiO 2 hollow spheres (TiO 2 -NO 2 HSs) composite material was successfully fabricated by a simple sol-gel combined with solvothermal and concentrated HNO 3 treatment strategy using carbon microspheres obtained from hydrothermal carbonization of waste Camellia oleifera shells as a template. The microstructure, surface property, compositional and structural information, and optical and electronic property of as-prepared TiO 2 -NO 2 HSs were well characterized. Compare with conventional g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 photocatalysts , the as-prepared TiO 2 -NO 2 HSs exhibited excellent simulated sunlight photocatalytic activity toward aqueous organic pollutants degradation and hydrogen evolution from water-splitting, which can be attributed to their unique hollow spherical microstructure and the introduction of -NO 2 groups.

High sensitivity and rapid response are important for environment monitoring of gas sensors. Herein, we introduced polyoxometalates (POMs) as electron acceptors into a low-resistance sulfide gas sensitive material, ZnS, for the first time, and prepared a group of heater-type gas sensors by using ZnS/PW 12 composite microspheres. The sensor performances to NO 2 gas were comprehensively explored. The optimized ZnS/1 %PW 12 composite sensor exhibited an ultrahigh response of 358.1 to 50 ppm NO 2 gas, which is 4.86 times greater than that of pure ZnS sensor, and higher than performances of most reported ZnS-based NO 2 sensors in literatures. Simultaneously, the ZnS/1 %PW 12 composite sensor also exhibited accelerated response and recovery time of only 82 and 30 s, respectively, much faster than pure ZnS sensor (147 and 72 s). The reason for the improvement of the sensing performance was explored via mechanism study, and it was found that the introduction of PW 12 into ZnS sensor contributed to its enhanced performance. PW 12 , as an electron acceptor, increased carrier mobility and reduced electron-hole recombination, and thus enhanced gas sensing properties. Moreover, other gas sensing parameters such as selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability were investigated. Hence, this study contributed to the literature on the development of polyoxometalates-based gas sensors.

UiO-66 and its functionalized derivatives (UiO-66-X, X = -OH, -NO 2 , -NH 2 ) were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method, and their structural integrity and functionalization were confirmed. Hydrogen adsorption experiments and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations demonstrated that UiO-66-OH exhibited the highest hydrogen adsorption capacity. At 300 K and 1 bar, its experimental adsorption capacity reached 0.0301 wt%, representing increases of 29.18 %, 3.44 %, and 19.92 % compared to UiO-66, UiO-66-NH 2 , and UiO-66-NO 2 , respectively. At 77 K and 20 bar, its simulated adsorption capacity reached 2.352 wt%, surpassing UiO-66-NH 2 (2.229 wt%) and UiO-66-NO 2 (1.927 wt%). This superior performance is attributed to optimized pore structure and enhanced functional group interactions, providing new insights for optimizing hydrogen storage in UiO-66 materials.

The abundant tunable functional groups and room-temperature sensing properties of MXenes have garnered increasing interest in the field of gas sensing. However, the majority of research has exclusively focused on the combined impact of external substances with MXenes functional groups, with limited exploration into the modulation of MXenes’ intrinsic functional groups. In this work, we successfully produced molten salt-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (M-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) with tunable oxygen-functionalized surfaces using the molten salt immersion method and employed it as a chemical resistive gas sensor to detect NO 2 at room temperature (RT). Using diverse analytical techniques, we propose the O−addition effect on the surface titanium atoms and the O−substitution effect on the edge carbon atoms, refining the existence form of –O functional groups as well as realizing the effective regulation of the intrinsic functional groups. With a high response (∼25.87%−100 ppm NO 2 , whose response value is five times higher than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x ), relatively rapid response speed (∼99 s−25 ppm NO 2 ), high sensitivity (∼0.29 ppm −1 ), low detection limits (theoretical LoD is 3.3 ppm), good selectivity and long-term stability (maintain stable within 28 days) at RT, the sensor based on M-Ti 3 C 2 T x demonstrates excellent NO 2 sensing performance. To understand the sensing mechanism, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to explore adsorption behaviors. Theoretical analysis validates that M-Ti 3 C 2 T x has a stronger adsorption capacity for NO 2 (E ad = −1.149 eV) owing to the formation of covalent bond between the –O functional group and the nitrogen atom of NO 2 . The application of the molten salt can effectively modulate the intrinsic functional groups of MXenes, expanding the scope of MXenes surface modification engineering and creating new opportunities for enhancing the gas sensing capabilities of MXenes.

Given the considerable harm that NO 2 poses to the environment and human health, developing reliable NO 2 detection sensors is crucial. Herein, a flexible, multifunctional sensor was successfully synthesized through hydrothermal and the wet impregnation methods using an elastic PU yarn as the substrate. This sensor, named Au/VTe 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x –PU, was characterized via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to analyze its structure, chemical valence states, and micromorphology. At room temperature (23 °C), the sensor demonstrated an exceptionally high response to NO 2 gas, with a response value of 1.72 at 50 ppm as well as low response and recovery time of 33 and 38 s. Additionally, testing of the strain performance of Au/VTe 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x –PU showed that this flexible sensor exhibits high strain sensitivity, excellent repeatability, and durability, making it suitable for detecting subtle human movements. Overall, the synthesized sensor is in considerable advantages in terms of both gas-sensing performance and tensile performance, exhibiting broad application prospects in human motion and health monitoring.
