In-Situ Sulfuration of Ni(OH)2 to Heterostructured Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2@Ni Catalyst for Efficient Water Splitting

Xinxin Dai,Zhen Tang,Xinyuan Yan,Shiyi Tao,Shanshan Wang,Yi Liu,Jiafeng Cao,Xiaolong Deng,Xin Bo

The exploring and developing non-precious transition metal-based catalysts for practical water electrolysis with the low cost, high efficiency and easy macroscopic preparation was still a challenge. Herein, Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 heterojunction with different sulfuration time was proposed and hydrothermally synthesized using a simple two-step approach, which served as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting in alkaline solution at industrial temperature. Among these catalysts, Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -5h displayed the smallest overpotentials (237 mV@100 mA cm −2 and 360 mV@100 mA cm −2 ) for OER and HER at room temperature, along with low Tafel slopes of 62.0 mV dec −1 and 80.8 mV dec −1 respectively. Furthermore, working at high temperature Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -5h exhibited even lower overpotential of 82 mV@100 mA cm −2 at 70 °C for OER and 325 mV@100 mA cm −2 at 60 °C for HER. The excellent performance was ascribed to the heterojunction accelerating the charge transfer, hierarchical interconnected structure promoting the mass transfer and the synergistic effect between the components of Ni 3 S 2 and Ni(OH) 2 . This work could provide a promising route for promoting the electrocatalytic performance of Ni-based catalyst with a simple sulfuration method for industrial water splitting, which could expand to other non-noble metal-based materials for enhancing the electrocatalytic activities.

Highly efficient Ni@Ni–Pt/La2O3 catalyst for hydrogen generation from hydrous hydrazine decomposition: Effect of Ni–Pt surface alloying

Yu-Jie Zhong,Hong-Bin Dai,Yuan-Yuan Jiang,De-Min Chen,Min Zhu,Li-Xian Sun,Ping Wang

Hydrous hydrazine has received increasing attention as a promising hydrogen carrier owing to its many favorable attributes, such as high hydrogen content, low material cost, stable liquid state at ambient conditions, and free of solid decomposition byproduct. Herein, we report the synthesis of a supported core–shell structured Ni@Ni–Pt/La 2 O 3 catalyst by a combination of co-precipitation and galvanic replacement methods. The catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity and 100% selectivity towards hydrogen generation from hydrous hydrazine at mild conditions, which outperforms most reported hydrous hydrazine decomposition catalysts. The favorable catalytic performance of the Ni@Ni–Pt/La 2 O 3 catalyst is correlated with the Pt-induced electronic and geometric modifications on the catalyst surface .

Tingting Xu,Xudong Hou,Shengjun Liu,Bo Liu

We demonstrated a facile and efficient method for the preparation of a magnetic and porous Ni@MOF-74(Ni) [Ni 2 (DOBDC), DOBDC = 2, 5-dihydroxyterephthalate] composite by one-step solvothermal reaction of Raney Ni and DOBDC. Ni in the reaction not only acted as the core of the composite, but also provided metal source for the formation of MOF-74(Ni). The Ni@MOF-74(Ni) composite exhibits both magnetic characteristics and high porosity, enabling it an efficient candidate for dye removal and target drug delivery system. The adsorption amount of rhodamine b reached up to 177.8 mg g −1 , and 4.1 mg g −1 for ibuprofen.

Ni(0) formation on carbon felt cathode triggers redox synergetic degradation of Ni-EDTA during electrochemical treatment for Ni-plating wastewater

Li-Zhi Huang,Junpeng Li,Weiguo Chen,Jia Deng,Fang Zhang

Ni organic complexes are widely used in industrial production, posing severe threats to the natural environment and human health. In this work, we found that Ni (0) formed by the decomplexation and reduction of typical Ni organic complexes (Ni-EDTA) on the surface of carbon felt cathode. The formed Ni(0) as a catalytic site generates atomic hydrogen (H•) with strong reductive reactivity via electron transfer. H• not only accelerates the oxygen activation to form H 2 O 2 on carbon felt cathode, but also reacts with H 2 O 2 to generate strong oxidative hydroxyl radicals (HO•) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Under the attack of multiple active species, 95.5 % of Ni-EDTA is removed, and the removal efficiencies of total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved Ni reach 43.8 % and 77.1 % after 120 min of electrolysis at −2.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The redox synergistic reaction, initiated by the formation of Ni(0) on the carbon felt cathode, demonstrates excellent stability in treating real Ni plating wastewater. This approach eliminates the need for additional chemical reagents and prevents the release of heavy metals. Our findings offer a novel strategy for leveraging the self-transformation of Ni organic complexes to generate various active species for electrochemical treatment of Ni plating wastewater.

Ce-enhanced nano-Ni exsolution from Ni-Al-O spinel oxide enables facile fabrication of CeO2-Ni interaction for efficient ammonia decomposition

Denghui Cheng,Yang Gao,Huan Yang,Fuqing Gong,Guohao Yin,Yuyang Luo,Yongqiang Tian,Shuheng Chen,Jingbo Du,Jia Yang,Zhen Huang,De Chen

Ammonia decomposition is an appealing method for on-site hydrogen production, enabling ease of transportation and storage of H 2 . However, the high-temperature and hydrogen-rich environment present a challenge in developing highly efficient and stable catalysts. Hence, this study outlines an exsolution strategy for synthesizing a Ni-based catalyst in intimate contact with CeO 2 . The Ce 10 /NiAl 2 O 4 catalyst exhibits competitive catalytic performance for ammonia decomposition reaction, and achieves a hydrogen production rate of 78.3 mmol g cat −1  min −1 at 550 °C. Importantly, the robust structure of the Ce 10 /NiAl 2 O 4 catalyst ensures that no significant deactivation is observed during the 200-h stability test. HRTEM, XRD, TPD and kinetic studies reveals that the presence of CeO 2 enhances the dispersion of exsolved Ni nanoparticles, modulates the surface basicity of catalyst, reduce the reaction activation energy, promote the desorption of nitrogen/hydrogen species, and subsequently promotes NH 3 adsorption/activation capacity·NH 3 -TPD-MS in combination with in-situ DRIFTS demonstrate that CeO 2 could accelerate the recombination and desorption of N* adatoms, which is the rate limiting step, thereby significantly boosting catalytic performance. Furthermore, the DFT calculations reveal that the interaction between CeO 2 and Ni species facilitates electron transfer toward Ni, lowering the barrier for both N–H dissociation and N* recombination and desorption. This work not only presents an efficient and stable noble-metal-free catalyst for ammonia decomposition to generate hydrogen, but also provide a general strategy to engineer high-performance catalysts applicable to harsh catalytic environments.

Junhong Liu,Zhitao Liu,Jing Yang,Bin Xu,Feiyun Chen,Xin Liao

The incorporation of nanomaterials generated from Prussian blue (PB) derivatives has emerged as a promising strategy to significantly improve the properties of energetic materials. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the influence of nanomaterials derived from PB on the thermal decomposition characteristics of energetic materials. To achieve this goal, we prepared nanomaterials using coprecipitation and heat treatment methods with PB derivatives as catalysts. Advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis for specific surface area and pore size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to thoroughly characterize these nanomaterials. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to assess the thermal behavior of nitrocellulose (NC), and the relevant kinetic parameters were determined through thermal decomposition kinetics calculations and analysis. This work revealed the influence of catalysts on the NC decomposition process and provided comprehensive insights into the effect of integrating nanomaterials derived from PB derivatives on the thermal decomposition performance of NC. The results of this work demonstrated the possibility of using nanomaterials generated from PB derivatives as effective catalysts to enhance the thermal decomposition characteristics of NC, offering interesting opportunities for their application in the field of high-energy materials.

Hcp-Ni derived highly dispersed and stable Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for CO2 methanation

Chaoyue Zhang,Mingrui Wang,Xinyue Han,Zheng Shen,Hongying Zhuo,Tianyu Zhang,Xiaofeng Yang,Yanqiang Huang

Metastable hcp-Ni enables the synthesis of highly dispersed and stable Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst • Highly dispersed Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst delivers 75.7% CO 2 conversion and 100-h stability • Original hcp-Ni particles spontaneously transform into fcc-Ni clusters of ∼2.3 nm • Small Ni clusters promote CO 2 methanation via monodentate formate intermediate • Fcc-Ni precursors undergo severe sintering to ultra-large and less-active particles Ni-based catalysts are promising candidates for CO 2 methanation while their practical applications are limited by particle agglomeration and deactivation. Here, we report a facile strategy to fabricate a highly dispersed and stable Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst using metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp)-Ni as a precursor. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the initial hcp-Ni (∼12.0 nm) spontaneously transforms into uniform face-centered cubic (fcc)-Ni nanoparticles (NPs) of ∼2.3 nm on γ -Al 2 O 3 support during H 2 reduction and CO 2 methanation reaction. The small Ni particles contribute to improved Ni 0 proportion on catalyst surface. In contrast, the original fcc-Ni precursors are prone to sintering, forming ultra-large and less-active Ni aggregates. The highly dispersed Ni NPs derived from hcp-Ni enhance CO 2 adsorption-activation and facilitate the formate-mediated reaction pathway. The resulting hcp-Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst delivers a CO 2 conversion of 58.2% with a CH 4 selectivity of 85.4% at 460 °C and endows robust stability exceeding 100 hours. The optimal CH 4 space time yield reaches 179.5 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 , exceeding 2.4 times that of fcc-Ni/Al 2 O 3 . This work establishes a reliable synthesis paradigm rooted in crystal-phase regulation, enabling the manufacture of highly dispersed and stable Ni-based catalysts for efficient CO 2 methanation. Low stress electroforming of Ni and Ni–Co alloys enabled by machine learning

Lei Wang,Han Zhang,Pengfei Xu,Zhihao Liu,Zekun Liu,Bo Wang,Fei Ding,Langping Wang,Yanji Yang,Yong Chen,Yupeng Xu,Dianlong Wang,Bo Wang

Internal stress control is critical for the electroforming of high-precision components such as X-ray focusing mirrors, which typically require stress levels below 0.1 MPa to maintain shape accuracy. Meanwhile, the complex nonlinear interactions among multiple deposition parameters make stress optimization challenging using traditional methods. We propose a machine learning-assisted framework to systematically investigate and optimize the low-stress (<0.1 MPa) electroforming of nickel and nickel-cobalt alloys from sulfamate baths. Among various machine learning algorithms, random forest is identified as the optimal predictive model. Based on this, a processing map correlating current density and cobalt concentration with low-stress conditions is established. SHAP analysis reveals that current density is the dominant factor, followed by cobalt concentration. Combined EBSD, XRD, and DFT calculations elucidate the underlying physical mechanisms. Current density induces grain refinement, while cobalt incorporation promotes solid solution formation, both of which lead to lattice expansion in the nickel structure and consequent tensile stress generation. Finally, finite element simulations guide the optimization of engineering solutions, leading to the successful fabrication of X-ray focusing mirrors with exceptional thickness uniformity (coefficient of variation <2%)

Ni-Epoxy/Ni Multifunctional Layer Integrated Perovskite-Based Photoanode with High Electric Field

Jize Wang,Ping Mu,Xiongzhuang Jiang,Shaowen cao,Bin Li,Yong Peng

In this study, we present a transparent perovskite-based photoanode consisting of a CsPbBr3-based photogenerated electric field layer and a Ni-Epoxy/Ni layer with integrated multifunctions of light transmission, sealing, charge conducting, and catalyzing. The Ni-Epoxy/Ni layer successfully constructed longitudinal charge transport channels and provided an interface with active sites, while achieving an average visible transmittance of more than 70%. For photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation at 1.23 VRHE in 0.5 M KOH solution, the maximum photocurrent densities of the photoanode were 17.28 and 5.19 mA cm–2 when light was excited from the FTO and the multifunctional layer side, respectively, based on an actual working area of 2 cm2. The photoanode exhibited a 1450 mV shift of onset potential compared with the multifunctional layer. Due to the existence of a high built-in electric field, bias-free complete PEC water splitting was realized, and the peak photocurrent density was 0.46 mA cm–2. The multifunctional layer’s water resistance increased the photoanode’s working time from less than 1 min to more than 30 min.

Dry reforming of methane over Ni/La2O3 nanorod catalysts with stabilized Ni nanoparticles

Xinyu Li,Di Li,Hao Tian,Liang Zeng,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Jinlong Gong

This paper describes the design of a Ni/La 2 O 3 catalyst using La 2 O 2 CO 3 nanorod as a support precursor (denoted as Ni/La 2 O 3 -LOC) via a wet impregnation method for dry reforming of methane (DRM). The results showed that La 2 O 3 derived from the La 2 O 2 CO 3 precursor maintained its initial morphology upon thermal treatment and could highly disperse Ni particles on it. Additionally, the nanorod-shaped support could provide more medium-strength basic sites to facilitate CO 2 adsorption and activation on its surface. Consequently, the Ni/La 2 O 3 -LOC catalyst reached 70% of CH 4 conversion and 75% of CO 2 conversion at 700   °C after 50   h DRM reaction with a H 2 /CO ratio of 0.87. The enhanced metal-support interaction restricted the sintering of nickel particles under harsh reaction conditions. Coke evolution on the catalysts was also investigated to understand coke formation mechanism and the role of La 2 O 2 CO 3 in coke elimination. It has been found that nickel dispersion can affect distribution of coke and La 2 O 2 CO 3 on the surface of catalyst, both of which have a close relation with catalytic performance.

Impedance matching optimization mechanism of SiBCN(Ni) absorbing fibers with Ni as catalyst

Chunmiao Liu,Yanchun Tong,Chang Liu,Haibin Sun,Qiangqiang Hu,Shigang Wu,Yujun Zhao,Jiao Li,Xue Guo,Yurun Feng

SiBCN ceramic materials are widely studied in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, their practical application is limited due to the problem of poor impedance matching. In this study, SiBCN (Ni) fibers were successfully prepared by doping magnetic metal Ni, and the absorption properties of the samples were systematically investigated at different high-temperature treatments (1200 °C–1500 °C). The results showed that the doping of Ni contributed to the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which could enhance the improvement of conductive loss performance. Additionally, the catalytic effect of Ni promoted the formation of various crystals, including Ni 2 Si, β-SiC, Si 3 N 4 , and Si 2 N 2 O, resulting in the presence of multiple heterogeneous interfaces and excellent polarization loss capability. The Ni 2 Si particles acted as magnetic loss units, thereby enhancing the impedance matching of the fibers. Consequently, the SiBCN (Ni) sample prepared at 1300 °C exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −21.38 dB and an effective absorption band (EAB) of 3.68 GHz. In addition, SiBCN (Ni) fibers coating proved effective in reducing Radar Cross Section (RCS) signals. Therefore, these findings suggest that SiBCN (Ni) fibers have the potential to serve as EMW absorbers in military radar and satellite communication.

Unusual double ligand holes as catalytic active sites in LiNiO2

Huang Haoliang,Chang Yu-Chung,Huang Yu-Cheng,Li Lili,Komarek Alexander C.,Tjeng Liu Hao,Orikasa Yuki,Pao Chih-Wen,Chan Ting-Shan,Chen Jin-Ming,Haw Shu-Chih,Zhou Jing,Wang Yifeng,Lin Hong-Ji,Chen Chien-Te,Dong Chung-Li,Kuo Chang-Yang,Wang Jian-Qiang,Hu Zhiwei,Zhang Linjuan

Designing efficient catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for energy conversion devices. The anionic redox allows formation of O-O bonds and offers higher OER activity than the conventional metal sites. Here, we successfully prepare LiNiO 2 with a dominant 3 d 8 L configuration ( L is a hole at O 2 p ) under high oxygen pressure, and achieve a double ligand holes 3 d 8 L 2 under OER since one electron removal occurs at O 2 p orbitals for Ni III oxides. LiNiO 2 exhibits super-efficient OER activity among LiMO 2 , R MO 3 (M = transition metal, R  = rare earth) and other unary 3d catalysts. Multiple in situ/operando spectroscopies reveal Ni III →Ni IV transition together with Li-removal during OER. Our theory indicates that Ni IV (3 d 8 L 2 ) leads to direct O-O coupling between lattice oxygen and *O intermediates accelerating the OER activity. These findings highlight a new way to design the lattice oxygen redox with enough ligand holes created in OER process.
