Facilitating interface charge transfer via constructing NiO/NiCo2O4 heterostructure for oxygen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions

Guoqiang Liu,Yuwen Cheng,Maoqin Qiu,Chengcheng Li,Anyang Bao,Zhongti Sun,Cuizhen Yang,Dongming Liu

Designing high-activity electrocatalysts to enhance the slow multielectron-transfer process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for hydrogen generation. Here, we employ hydrothermal and subsequent heat-treatment strategies to acquire nanoarrays-structured NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 heterojunction anchored Ni foam (NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF) as efficient materials for catalyzing the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate that NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF exhibits a smaller overpotential than those of single NiO/NF and NiCo 2 O 4 /NF owing to interface-triggered numerous interface charge transfer. Moreover, the superior metallic characteristics of NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF further enhance its electrochemical activity toward OER. Specifically, NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF delivered a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 336 mV with a Tafel slope of 93.2 mV dec −1 for the OER, which are comparable with those of commercial RuO 2 (310 mV and 68.8 mV dec −1 ). Further, an overall water splitting system is preliminarily constructed via using a Pt net as cathode and NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF as anode. The water electrolysis cell performs an operating voltage of 1.670 V at 20 mA cm −2 , which outperform the Pt net||IrO 2 couple assembled two-electrode electrolyzer (1.725 V at 20 mA cm −2 ). This study proposes an efficient route to acquire multicomponent catalysts with rich interfaces for water electrolysis.

One-Pot Synthesis of N-Doped NiO for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with Efficient Charge Transfer

Fulin Wang,Zhenzhen Yu,Kaiyang Shi,Xiangwei Li,Kangqiang Lu,Weiya Huang,Changlin Yu,Kai Yang

The green and clean sunlight-driven catalytic conversion of CO2into high-value-added chemicals can simultaneously solve the greenhouse effect and energy problems. The controllable preparation of semiconductor catalyst materials and the study of refined structures are of great significance for the in-depth understanding of solar-energy-conversion technology. In this study, we prepared nitrogen-doped NiO semiconductors using a one-pot molten-salt method. The research shows that the molten-salt system made NiO change from p-type to n-type. In addition, nitrogen doping enhanced the adsorption of CO2on NiO and increased the separation of photogenerated carriers on the NiO. It synergistically optimized the CO2-reduction system and achieved highly active and selective CO2photoreduction. The CO yield on the optimal nitrogen-doped photocatalyst was 235 μmol·g−1·h−1(selectivity 98%), which was 16.8 times that of the p-type NiO and 2.4 times that of the n-type NiO. This can be attributed to the fact that the nitrogen doping enhanced the oxygen vacancies of the NiOs and their ability to adsorb and activate CO2molecules. Photoelectrochemical characterization also confirmed that the nitrogen-doped NiO had excellent electron -transfer and separation properties. This study provides a reference for improving NiO-based semiconductors for photocatalytic CO2reduction.Keywords:NiO;nitrogen doping;photocatalysis;reduction of CO2

Interface engineering of the NiO/CeO2@NF heterostructure to boost the electro-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Xiu He,ZhenZhen Mo,Huiling Liu,Cheng Wang

The synthesis of furan-based platform chemicals from abundant and renewable biomass-based hexoses plays an important role in the development and utilization of biomass energy. The electrochemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) represents a promising route for synthesizing the 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) product which is a high value-added biomass-based monomer. Interface engineering is an effective strategy to adjust the electronic structure, optimize the adsorption of intermediates, and expose more active sites, thus attracting extensive attention for designing efficient HMFOR electrocatalysts. Herein, a NiO/CeO2@NF heterostructure with an abundant interface is designed for boosting the HMFOR performance under alkaline conditions. At 1.475 V vs. RHE, the conversion of HMF is nearly 100%, the selectivity of FDCA is 99.0%, and the faradaic efficiency is as high as 98.96%. The NiO/CeO2@NF electrocatalyst also exhibits robust stability for HMFOR for 10 cycles. When coupled with the cathode hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium, the yields of FDCA and hydrogen production are 197.92 and 600 μmol cm−2 h−1, respectively. The NiO/CeO2@NF catalyst is also suitable for the electrocatalytic oxidation of other biomass-derived platform compounds. The abundant interface between NiO and CeO2, which can regulate the electronic properties of Ce and Ni atoms, improve the oxidation state of Ni species, regulate intermediate adsorption, and promote electron/charge transfer, makes the most contribution to high HMFOR performance. This work will provide a simple route for the design of heterostructured materials and reveal the application prospect of interface engineering for promoting the upgrading of biomass derivatives.

Wang Wei,Zhang Zhe,Wang Min

The electrochemical catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from biomass to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted significant attention. Herein, the catalyst NiO-N/C composite was prepared and showed high activity for the electrochemical oxidation of HMF. The optimized NiO-N/C composite electrode supported by foamed nickel exhibits 99% conversion of HMF, 84% yield of FDCA, and 96% faradic efficiency. The NiO-N/C composite electrode is stable and remains active after six consecutive measurements. This work provides an effective method for the design and preparation of biomass energy electrocatalysts based on nitrogen-modulated NiO materials.

Selective hydrogenation of 2-methylnaphthalene by heterostructured Ni-NiO-based catalysts for 6-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene

Xiaoyuechuan Ma,Shishuai Shi,Qixiang Xu,Li Xu,Guoji Liu

As an important intermediate of organic chemical industry, 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN) has the application value in the field of medicine and material research. Up to date, the existing researches are aimed at 2-methylnaphthalene saturated hydrogenation and hydrocracking for high value products such as cycloalkanes and BTXs. A series of Ni-based (20 wt.%) catalysts were prepared with different reduction temperatures for the hydrogenation of 2-methylnaphthalene to 6-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (6-MT) in this study. The results showed that by using NiO/Al 2 O 3 -370R, 90.8% conversion of 2-MN and 59.7% yield of desired product (6-MT) can be achieved with optimum reaction conditions of 4 MPa & 340°C, 8 h. Multiple studies including catalyst characterizations, reaction kinetics and density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that symbiotic effect of heterostructured Ni-NiO over γ-Al 2 O 3 mainly corresponding to the desired catalytic performance. This study gains fundamental understanding in the effects of valence of Ni-based catalysts in catalytic hydrogenation.

Defect controlling of BaTiO3@ NiO double hysteresis loop ceramics with enhanced energy storage capability and stability

Hongye Wang,Rui Huang,Cheng Tao,Hua Hao,Zhonghua Yao,Hanxing Liu,Minghe Cao

Dielectric capacitor with high energy storage density has become a pivotally enabling technology in electronic industry. The most critical factors affecting energy storage capacity are polarization and breakdown strength . Here the BaTiO 3 @ NiO double-hysteresis-loop ceramics with different polarization characteristics are prepared by changing the sintering atmosphere to control the defect structure . Results show that, the samples sintered in oxygen exhibit the obviously characteristics of double hysteresis loop, higher polarization and larger breakdown strength . In contrast, the samples sintered in nitrogen have lower polarization and breakdown strength and weaker double hysteresis loop. It is proved that the double hysteresis loop is caused by the defects of the inner layer and the outer layer by regulating the defect structure . Firstly, Low valence Ni ions replace Ti ions to form N i Ti '' − V o • • NiTi''−Vo•• defect dipoles. These charged defect dipoles could be pinned the domain wall, and the existence of oxygen vacancies restricts the movement of the domain wall, making the material appeared a pinched hysteresis loop similar to the double hysteresis loop as observed in antiferroelectrics. Secondly, the local electric field generated by the depletion layer at the interface may also trigger a new polarization features in the material. This double hysteresis loop helps to improve the polarization and energy storage capacity of the material. Finally, the excellent energy storage density of the oxygen samples reaches up to 2.48 J cm −3 at 340 kV cm -1 with prominent cycle stability and temperature stability. This work provides a prospective method to fabricate material with high energy storage performance by the adjustment defect structure to control the polarization mechanism in the BaTiO 3 @1NiO ceramics.

Tracking Heterogeneous Interface Charge Reverse Separation in SrTiO3/NiO/NiS Nanofibers with In Situ Irradiation XPS

Li Wang,Yukun Li,Yinyin Ai,Erchuang Fan,Fei Zhang,Wentao Zhang,Guosheng Shao,Peng Zhang

Photocatalytic conversion of H 2 O and CO 2 into solar fuels is considered to be a green and renewable technology while photocatalytic performance is hampered by the severe recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Drawing inspiration from the concepts of the electrons transfer layer (ETL) and the holes transfer layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells, a multicomponent photocatalyst SrTiO 3 /NiO/NiS that incorporates p–n heterojunction and Schottky junction is constructed for converting solar energy into easily storable solar fuels. The NiS and NiO play the roles analogy to the ETL and the HTL which accomplishes the reverse migration of electrons and holes, accordingly, SrTiO 3 /NiO/NiS exhibits a noticeable enhancement in photocatalytic performance. However, the lack of direct observation of charge transfer pathways in complex multicomponent photocatalysts makes it challenging to thoroughly investigate their catalytic mechanisms. Herein, the in situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI–XPS) is employed to track photogenerated charges migration pathways between microscopic heterogeneous interfaces, thereby providing a comprehensive elucidation of the catalytic mechanism and heterojunction formation process by integrating the photoelectrochemical tests. This study not only serves as compelling evidence for the capability of ISI–XPS in directly and accurately tracking charge transfer pathways but also as an intriguing highlight within the catalyst design strategy.

Design and preparation of hollow NiO sphere- polyaniline composite for NH3 gas sensing at room temperature

Qi Hu,Zhenming Wang,Junyu Chang,Peng Wan,Jiahui Huang,Liang Feng

The accurate and rapid sensing of NH 3 at room temperature is a challenging conundrum for daily life and environment protection. In this work, we have explored an intriguing material, hollow NiO sphere composited with polyaniline (labelled as h-NiO-PANI) for NH 3 gas sensing, fabricated by growing PANI on the hollow NiO sphere derived from solvothermal synthesis and calcination. Ni-Cu glycerate is obtained via solvothermal synthesis, which is a universal way to produce uniform glycerate microspheres. During calcination, the hollow sphere is ingeniously designed by taking advantage of the outward adhesion from CuO to the inner core. Polymerization of aniline on the hollow spheres is beneficial for large specific surface area and gas adsorption. Impressively, the sensor based on h-NiO-PANI exhibits favorable response to NH 3 (ΔR/R 0 =43 % for 10 ppm, 149 s in response and 257 s in recovery), which is greatly better than the counterparts (NiO-PANI and PANI). Moreover, the sensor has also shown superb anti-interference against common volatile organic compounds (VOCs), water and humidity, along with the superior repeatability in 5 cycles and long-term stability in a week, manifesting the sensor a promising candidate in daily application. The enhanced gas sensing performance is attributed to the hollow structure and construction of p-p heterojunctions between NiO and PANI.

3D NiO nanoflakes/carbon fiber meshwork: Facile preparation and utilization as general platform for photocathodic bioanalysis

Fen-Ying Kong,Hui-Yu Zou,Meng Xiong,Jia-Dong Zhang,Wei Wang,Wei-Wei Zhao

Herein, we describe a customized approach for facile preparation of three-dimensional (3D) NiO nanoflakes (NFs)/carbon fiber meshwork (CFM) and its validation as a common photocathode matrix for photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis , which to our knowledge has not been reported. Specifically, 3D NiO NFs/CFM was fabricated by a sequential liquid phase deposition and annealing process, which was then characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X–ray photoelectron spectrum, UV–vis absorption spectra and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurement. Sensitized by BiOI and incorporated with an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)/tyrosinase (TYR) bi-enzyme cascade system, a sensitive split-type cathodic PEC bioanalysis for the determination of ALP was achieved. This method can detect ALP concentrations down to 3 × 10 −5 U L −1 with a linear response range of 0.001–10 U L −1 . Moreover, this proposed system exhibited good selectivity , stability and excellent performance for real sample analysis. This research features the facile preparation of 3D NiO NFs/CFM that could acts as a universal matrix for photocathodic analysis, and is envisioned to stimulate more effort for advanced 3D photocathode for PEC bioanalysis and beyond.

The preparation of NiO/Ni–N/C nanocomposites and its electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation reaction

Jingchuang Zhao,Yingzhen Zhang,Xianyu Kang,Yancai Li

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have been extensively studied for developing a new non-precious metal catalyst to replace commercial platinum catalysts, due to their expensive cost and susceptibility to CO poisoning. In this work, nanocomposites of nickel oxide/nickel supported by N-doped carbon (NiO/Ni–N/C) were prepared by using a hydrothermal method and further carbonization at different temperatures. The surface morphology and composition of the NiO/Ni–N/C nanocomposites were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As observed through electrochemical experiments, the NiO/Ni–N/C nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (NiO/Ni–N/C/GCE) exhibits high electrocatalytic activity for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline solution. Among the nanocomposites, NiO/Ni–N/C carbonized at 500 °C (NiO/Ni–N/C500) displays the highest mass activity (1043 mA mgNi−1) at 0.73 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which is much higher than that of Ni(OH)2/N–C and NiO/Ni–N/C carbonized at other temperatures (400, 600, and 700 °C). In addition, the catalytic activity of NiO/Ni–N/C500 is 2.12 times that of the commercial Pt/C. NiO/Ni–N/C500/GCE also possesses fast kinetics, excellent stability and CO tolerance. Therefore, the NiO/Ni–N/C500 nanocomposites have great application potential as MOR catalysts.

Towards high performance lithium-oxygen batteries: Co3O4-NiO heterostructure induced preferential growth of ultrathin Li2O2 film

Ji-Jun Dong,Chao Ma,Qiang Zhang,Wen-Long Bai,Zhi-Peng Cai,Se-Si Li,Zhen Zhang,Xue-Yan Wu,Xiao Wei,Kai-Xue Wang,Jie-Sheng Chen

Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) with superior energy density are recognized as a promising next-generation energy storage device for electric vehicles. However, the morphology and particle size of Li 2 O 2 as well as the parasitic products Li 2 CO 3 give an essential impact on electrochemical properties . To address these issues, a free-standing Co 3 O 4 -NiO@Ni electrode with Co 3 O 4 -NiO heterostructure nanoneedle arrays on Ni foam was fabricated. The Co 3 O 4 -NiO heterostructure would control the morphology and size of Li 2 O 2 . The free-standing carbon-free electrode design would avoid the generation of Li 2 CO 3 . Ultrathin Li 2 O 2 film is preferentially generated within the Co 3 O 4 -NiO heterostructure nanoneedles during the discharge process. The film-like morphology of Li 2 O 2 would decrease the Li 2 O 2 /electrode interfacial resistance and charge overpotential, and enhance the discharge capacity. The free-standing Co 3 O 4 -NiO@Ni electrode exhibits an improved electrochemical performance with a high discharge specific capacity of 7905 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and good cyclic stability of 120 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 with a cutoff capacity of 500 mAh g −1 . This work provides a new strategy for improving the electrochemical performance of LOBs through the morphology control of Li 2 O 2 .
