Protective Effects of Dihydromyricetin against •OH-Induced Mesenchymal Stem Cells Damage and Mechanistic Chemistry

Xican Li,Jingjing Liu,Jian Lin,Tingting Wang,Jieyuan Huang,Yongqiang Lin,Dongfeng Chen

As a natural flavonoid inAmpelopsis grossedentata, dihydromyricetin (DHM,2R,3R-3,5,7,3′,4′,5′-hexahydroxy-2,3-dihydroflavonol) was observed to increase the viability of •OH-treated mesenchymal stem cells using a MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl] assay and flow cytometry analysis. This protective effect indicates DHM may be a beneficial agent for cell transplantation therapy. Mechanistic chemistry studies indicated that compared with myricetin, DHM was less effective at ABTS+• (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical) scavenging and reducing Cu2+, and had higher •O2−and DPPH• (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical) scavenging activities. Additionally, DHM could also chelate Fe2+to give an absorption maximum at 589 nm. Hence, such protective effect of DHM may arise from its antioxidant activities which are thought to occur via direct radical-scavenging and Fe2+-chelation. Direct radical-scavenging involves an electron transfer (ET) pathway. The hydrogenation of the 2,3-double bond is hypothesized to reduce the ET process by blocking the formation of a larger π-π conjugative system. The glycosidation of the 3–OH in myricitrin is assumed to sterically hinder atom transfer in the •O2−and DPPH• radical-scavenging processes. In DHM, the Fe2+-chelating effect can actually be attributed to the 5,3′,4′,5′–OH and 4–C=O groups, and the 3–OH group itself can neither scavenge radicals nor chelate metal. Keywords:dihydromyricetin;mesenchymal stem cells;antioxidant mechanisms;hydroxyl radical-induced;Fe2+-chelation;3–OH group;2,3-double bond;electron transfer (ET) pathway

Facilitating the rapid Grotthuss diffusion of OH− in electrolyte for accelerated oxygen evolution reaction

Yang Li,Shuijing Wang,Hengming Huang,Jiahui Kou,Chunhua Lu,Zhongzi Xu,Jinhua Ye

Faster OH − transfer for efficient adsorption on catalysis is key to accelerating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The diffusion of OH − in electrolyte mainly involves two mechanism which is dependent on the water coordination number (CN): Grotthuss diffusion (4 CN) and vehicular diffusion (5 CN). The Grotthuss diffusion is much faster but the vehicular diffusion of OH − is predominant in the electrolyte. Herein, negatively charged kaolin, which are simply dispersed in the electrolyte, are utilized to provide surface electrostatic attraction to H 2 O and repulsion to OH − to reduce the OH − CN from 5 to 4 for rapid Grotthuss diffusion. This contributes to the accelerated OH − adsorption which facilitates the charge transfer, the formation and the deprotonation of *OOH leading to enhanced OER performance. The OH − CN recovery from 4 to 5 is proved quite slow after leaving the kaolin surface, breaking the limitation that kaolin must be on the catalyst surface. This strategy exhibits universality for various electrocatalysts with reduced overpotential by 10–246 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . We provide a clean, simple and low-cost way to promote the industrial development of alkaline water electrolysis.

Key to unlocking NO2 sensing performance of monolayer Ti3C2Tx: Regulating OH/F functional groups

Zhaorui Zhang,Jiahao Liu,Haiying Du,Xufei Zhao,Haoming Sun,Minghui Yang,Jinkui Chu

A surface functional group modulation method was used to regulate the NO 2 sensing performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. The monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was synthesized from Ti 3 AlC 2 (MAX phase) by hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. Ar/O 2 hybrid plasma treatment was used to regulate the ratio of hydroxyl and fluorine functional groups (OH/ F) in the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface structure. Room-temperature (RH) NO 2 sensor based on modified Ti 3 C 2 T x was fabricated by the dip coating method. The modified Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor has a higher gas response (45.31 %) to 50 ppm NO 2 compared with the untreated Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor which shows more excellent sensitivity and linearity with the NO 2 concentration of 5–50 ppm. It is due to that the presence of the hydroxyl potential on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface well amplifies the electronic surface activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Concurrently, the modified electronic structure augments the adsorption propensity of Ti 3 C 2 T x for O 2 (2.26 |eV|) and NO 2 (3.24 |eV|), thereby improving the NO 2 sensing capability of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. These results demonstrate that Ti 3 C 2 T x with a high ratio of OH/ F functional groups has great potential in developing high-performance room temperature NO 2 sensors.

Yunqing Pi,Peng Zhao,Lingjia Ma,Yangdan Cao,Huiqing Gao,Shuying Dong,Jianhui Sun

The Co(OH) 2 /reduced graphene oxide hybrids (Co(OH) 2 /rGO) was prepared and used as catalyst to enhanced heterogeneous activation of Oxone for the decomposition of Levofloxacin (LVF). The Co(OH) 2 /rGO composites with different Co(OH) 2 loading have been successfully synthesized, where the sample contain 20% Co(OH) 2 exhibited superior activation, attributing to the synergistic effect between Co(OH) 2 and rGO. Meanwhile, the effects of some important reaction parameters on the decomposition of LVF by Co(OH) 2 /rGO/Oxone process were investigated. The results indicated that the decomposition rate of LVF(>94.5%) was increased with the increasing of Oxone concentration, and 20% Co(OH) 2 /rGO dosage neutral pH. Moreover, the Co(OH) 2 /rGO catalyst showed high activity and stability during the repeated experiments.

CO2 capture and sequestration by sodium humate and Ca(OH)2 from carbide slag

Sun Zhiguo,Feng Run,Zhang Li,Xie Hongyong

A new method of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) by sodium humate (HA–Na) and Ca(OH) 2 from carbide slag (CS) solution was proposed. The effects of various operating parameters, such as the additive amount of HA–Na, pH, temperature, gas flow rate, CO 2 inlet concentration, and stirring rate on both the Ca ion concentration and Ca conversion rate were investigated in a lab-scale bubbling reactor. The synergistic mechanism of HA–Na and Ca(OH) 2 from CS on CCS is also put forward and demonstrated. The experimental results indicate that HA–Na may improve significantly the CCS capability of CS since the Ca conversion rate of CS is increased 10% by HA–Na additive. The pH is a key factor for the CO 2 absorption process and HA–Na may lower the rate of pH decrease of Ca(OH) 2 solution. The increasing temperature, stirring rate, and CO 2 inlet concentration are favorable to CO 2 capture, as well as low gas flow rate. Ca(OH) 2 from CS mixed with HA–Na solution shows good performance in CO 2 uptake, and the Ca conversion rate reaches 99% with 100 mL of Ca(OH) 2 (1.5 g/L) solution mixed with 0.1 g HA–Na at 40 °C, a gas flow rate of 0.1 L/min, and an inlet CO 2 concentration of 100% at ambient pressure. Moreover, calcite CaCO 3 is is identified as the main product of CO 2 capture by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis.

Surface engineering of hierarchical Ni(OH)2 nanosheet@nanowire configuration toward superior urea electrolysis

Zhihao Yue,Siyu Yao,Yuanzhen Li,Wenxin Zhu,Wentao Zhang,Rong Wang,Jing Wang,Lunjie Huang,Dongyang Zhao,Jianlong Wang

In order to resolve the pollution and waste caused by urea-rich wastewater, designing superior and stable earth-abundant catalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) have always been attractive and urgent but still challenging. Herein, we report on a facile surface-engineering strategy of building hierarchical nickel hydroxide nanosheet@nanowire array on Ni foam (Ni(OH) 2 NS@NW/Ni foam) as anode material toward superior urea electrolysis. This Ni(OH) 2 based-catalyst with peculiar nanosheet@nanowire configuration just requires a small potential of 0.34 V ( vs. SCE) to drive 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea, which outperforms the one with pure nanosheet array architecture and even the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Further, a two-electrode electrolysis system is built here with the cathode of cobalt phosphide nanowire array on Ni foam (Co 2 P NW/Ni foam) and anode of Ni(OH) 2 NS@NW/Ni foam for overall urea electrolysis, which needs a low voltage of 1.58 V to drive 5 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea. Note that, the current density presented in this work is based on the real surface area of Ni foam but not the geometric area, unless otherwise specified.

Construction of CoNi2S4@Ni(OH)2 Nanosheet Structures for Asymmetric Supercapacitors with Excellent Performance

Yongli Tong,Baoqian Chi,Yu Jiang,Xiang Wu

It is crucial for energy storage devices to construct electrode materials with excellent performance. However, enhancing energy density and cycling stability for supercapacitors is a significant challenge. We successfully synthesized CoNi2S4@Ni(OH)2nanosheets on the surface of Ni foam substrate by a two-step hydrothermal approach. The obtained products exhibit a remarkable areal capacitance of 1534 F g−1at a current density of 1 A g−1. Moreover, even after 10,000 cycles, the specific capacitance remains 90% of its initial value, highlighting the exceptional long-term stability and durability. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device incorporating the CoNi2S4@Ni(OH)2material shows remarkable electrochemical performance. It delivers an energy density of 58.5 mW h g−1at a power density of 2700 W kg−1. The outstanding performance mainly arises from the selection of materials, the design of the structure, and the synergistic interaction between the materials. The result suggests that this material holds great potential as an energy storage material.

Boosting the Oxygen Evolution Reaction via the Reconstruction of M(OH)x/Fe3O4 Catalyst

Xiaoqu Wang,Limin Wang,Yongchun Liu,Raj Kumar,Li Liu,Qiulan Huang,Dujuan Huang,You-Jun Fan,Du-Hong Chen,Wei Chen

For large-scale hydrogen production from electrocatalysis of water, the Ni- and/or Fe-based catalysts were commonly used but limited by the ultrahigh overpotential and poor stability at high current density (>500 mA cm−2). Here, the reconstruction of M(OH)x/Fe3O4 (M = Ni, Fe) arrays has been fabricated for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The prepared M(OH)x/Fe3O4 grewon iron foam (M(OH)x/Fe3O4/IF) catalysts exhibited low overpotentials of 214 and 311 mV for OER at the current densities of 50 and 500 mA cm−2, respectively, besides the excellent stability up to 70 h of operation at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH. The in situ Raman spectra revealed that, the reconstruction of M(OH)x/Fe3O4/IF boosted the OER activity. Theoretical calculation revealed favorable absorption of O2 at Ni site of M(OH)x/Fe3O4/IF during OER. This work highlights the reconstruction structurally definite catalysts for promoting the catalytic activity toward OER and the large-scale electrocatalysis of water.

S and Se-enhanced intrinsic activity of Co(OH)2 for overall water splitting

Chunyan Fan,Xuxin Song,Yao Tang,Zehao Zang,Yangyang Ren,Lanlan Li,Xiaofei Yu,Xiaojing Yang,Zunming Lu,Xinghua Zhang

Designing catalysts that simultaneously optimize both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) emerges as a critical materials challenge. Co(OH)₂ is recognized as an effective OER electrocatalyst, but the low HER activity limits its application in overall water splitting. In this work, we synthesized sulfur (S) and selenium (Se) doped Co(OH) 2 catalysts with significantly enhanced HER activity using an electrochemical deposition method. The S-Co(OH) 2 and Se-Co(OH) 2 catalysts own low HER overpotentials of 48 mV and 59 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . And they require 1.56 V and 1.64 V at the same current density for water splitting, the sustain stable performance for > 100 h at current densities (100 mA cm −2 ) show their practical durability. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that non-metal doping induces electronic reconfiguration of Co and optimizes the ΔG H* value for intermediate formation, thus accelerating hydrogen generation and enhancing the intrinsic HER activity. This work presents an effective strategy for incorporating non-metal elements into transition metal-based catalysts, and provides insight to boost HER intrinsic activity and achieve bifunctional catalytic performance for water splitting.

Microscale Homogeneous Refinement of CaO/Ca(OH)₂ Particles for enhancing Thermochemical Energy Storage Performance

Guangyao Zhao,Zhehui Zhao,Sixing Zhang,Jiakang Yao,Na Cheng,Zhen Li,Yu Han,Xiaotao Zhang

Thermochemical energy storage technology based on the Ca(OH)₂/CaO dehydration-hydration reaction is considered as a promising strategy for addressing the transient storage of renewable energy due to high thermal storage density, long cycle characteristics, and safety. However, this technology suffers from drawbacks like agglomeration and sintering at high temperatures, along with poor cycling stability. In this study, the "dynamic" doping of Ca(OH)₂ with C₃N₄ was introduced to optimize the microstructure of particles, which enhanced the thermal performance, elevated conversion rate, and improved cycling stability, without reducing thermal storage density. In-depth characterizations revealed that C₃N₄ transformed Ca(OH)₂ from a flake-like structure to uniform spherical particles, approximately 10 μm in size. In particular, when the doping amount reached 30 wt%, the thermal storage density increased by 11.10% in contrast to Pure Ca(OH)₂, the peak reaction temperature decreased by 13.98°C, and the conversion rate improved to 91.22%. Simultaneously, the material exhibited excellent anti-caking properties, maintaining a thermal storage density of 776.46 J/g after 20 cycles, representing a 27% augmentation compared to the unmodified sample. The microscale effect of the material was retained. In summary, this outcome showcases outstanding comprehensive properties, taking thermochemical energy storage materials further into practical scenarios.

Tuning Active Hydrogen on Reconstructed RuO2/Co(OH)2 Catalysts for Selective Ammonia Synthesis

Anquan Zhu,Heng Liu,Lulu Qiao,Bin Liu,Kunlun Liu,Chuhao Luan,Kai Liu,Yin Zhou,Dewu Lin,Guoqiang Gan,Jiapei Li,Guo Hong,Wenjun Zhang

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (eNO 3 RR) is widely recognized as a promising strategy for sustainable ammonia production and supporting the nitrogen cycle. However, its advancement is impeded by complex behavior of reaction intermediates and the inevitable reconstruction of precatalysts. To address these challenges, the generation and utilization of active hydrogen (*H) are strategically managed by tailoring the RuO 2 /Co 3 O 4 precatalyst and optimizing the electrolyte composition (OH − and NO 3 − concentration), thereby selectively enhancing ammonia formation. Consequently, the in situ reconstructed RuO 2 /Co(OH) 2 catalyst achieves an impressive ammonia yield of 35.9 ± 0.9 mg h −1 cm −2 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.1 ± 2.6% at −0.3 V versus RHE. Furthermore, the catalyst shows significant potential for applications in nitrate-rich wastewater treatment and rechargeable Zn-NO 3 − batteries, maintaining stable operation for over 260 hours at 1 mA cm −2 with only a 6 mV increase in the potential window. Mechanistic studies reveal that electron-rich RuO 2 facilitates *H generation through water dissociation, which subsequently migrates to Co(OH) 2 to hydrogenate nitrogenous intermediates, selectively producing ammonia. This study highlights the importance of designing efficient catalytic systems that address both precatalyst reconstruction and the complexities of reactant and intermediate conversion in electrolytes, which are essential for managing the intricate electron and proton transfer processes involved in eNO 3 RR.

Organic–inorganic hybrid birefringent crystals have attracted much attention due to their high flexibility in molecular design and assembly. In this work, an alkaline earth metal 2-hydroxybutanedioate Ba 3 (C 4 H 4 O 5 ) 2 (OH) 2 crystallizing in the C 2/ c space group is synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Its unit cell parameters are a = 20.0584(7) Å, b = 7.4499(3) Å, c = 9.5087(3) Å, and β = 96.808(2) °. Ba 3 (C 4 H 4 O 5 ) 2 (OH) 2 polycrystalline powder is characterized in detail by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy, UV–vis–NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and simultaneous thermal analysis. In addition, theoretical analyses are carried out using first-principles calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. The theoretical birefringence of Ba 3 (C 4 H 4 O 5 ) 2 (OH) 2 is calculated to be 0.1 @546 nm. At the same time, UV–vis–NIR diffuse reflectance and band structure calculations show that Ba 3 (C 4 H 4 O 5 ) 2 (OH) 2 has an indirect bandgap of 5.11 eV with a UV cutoff edge of 203 nm.
